@Tim Smith… sounds like you got it: It’s all about discipline, which is required so you have the ability to clear yourself of the density you’ve consumed unconsciously…by doing so, you can actually feel your inherent connection with God. We are so undisciplined-we don’t even realize what we are consuming. If you were aware, you wouldn’t desire anyone outside of the one you married… you’ve just blindly allowed yourself to be trained that that’s “normal”…. And it is, for this world. But it won’t serve you.
So, practicing fasting will help me to become more Christ-like how? By practicing saying "no" to my desire to eat, which creates the "muscle" to enable me to more easily say "no" to my desire to have sex with someone other than my wife? Is that the idea? If so, what type of Christ-like qualities do the other practices develop? For instance, solitude?
The way to truly grow is to read and read and read the Bible (and be in a bible teaching church) which, with the help of the Holy Spirit, will convict us of sin, causing us to pray in repentance. Reading the Bible will also result in growing knowledge and love of God and then we will pray in praise and worship. John Mark Comer advocates something that looks a bit of Catholic mysticism, Buddhism and New age practices. Completely unnecessary if you have a bible teaching fellowship of believers and read God's word. Also he advocates we are apprentices, does this imply Comer thinks we will become the master one day? We are disciples for life, disciples of the one who is the way, the truth and the life.
Hey Annet, Thanks for keeping us accountable and being attentive to our teaching. While we don't have the space and bandwidth to engage each of the thoughtful questions, comments, and corrections that come to us, we do appreciate you reaching out. Every time John Mark speaks or writes, he goes through an extensive review process. In the course of that, he sends his scripts and manuscripts out to a community of 10-20 orthodox, Bible-believing, thoughtful advisors. After collecting these advisors' views and prayerfully reviewing those, we land on a final script or manuscript. While we understand that in a movement of 2 billion followers of Jesus around the world we won't be able to find agreement with everyone at every time, we do hope that you - with grace - will understand the thought and care by which we, with thought and care, try to ensure that each concept that we teach and write is faithful to God. Peace, The Practicing the Way team
Mr Comer, your 'practices' are exactly what my Hindu guru use to teach us. Self. Self. Self. It appeals to our arrogant & conceited nature. [All you talk about is your self & your customers.] Will you ever talk about Jesus?
You know we're made in God's image right? You know Jesus died for each and every individual right? We're supposed to die to the self right? Quit using Jesus as a scapegoat so you don't have to be a disciple.
While this is a good idea, it’s still making up your own thing. Jesus did have official rules, he established The Church and the apostles carried out His practices that are still practiced today in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Doing these practices shouldn’t be just whenever, however, there is a liturgical calendar to follow with specific guidelines for when to fast and how to fast. When to pray and how to pray. This is not legalistic but created to support you and guide you to become more like Christ, within the body of Christ . People want to go reinvent the wheel all the time, but it’s all there in the Orthodox Church. And it is so powerful, deep and beautiful. Also missing her is the Eucharist. Which is what creates communion between Christ and The Church, it’s essential to being a true follower of Christ. That is how you deepen your spiritual life and connection with God. The fullness of the Church cannot be found outside of it. Read the Church fathers and it will be clear. 2,000 years of Orthodoxy because God is the same yesterday today and tomorrow.
We are disciples of the most High.

Are you familiar with the term bookend?
You know we're made in God's image right? You know Jesus died for each and every individual right? We're supposed to die to the self right? Quit using Jesus as a scapegoat so you don't have to be a disciple.
Could you please elaborate more on that?
