The thing I love about bad apple is this was done back in to 2007 in adobe after effects. The amount of work going into the visual transitions was an amazing feat as it wasn't easy create the transitions back then. THe visual effects is stunning. Also the video you were watching froze on you.
_Touhou_ is a shoot-‘em-up bullet hell series created by Jun'ya “ZUN” Ota that first started in the 90’s. _Touhou_ is known for its fantastic music and bustling community. Games and other Official Works are still being worked on to this day.
Touhou is a video game series that has transcended being just a video game series. The creator essentially put all the characters and world into "public domain" (i put quotes cuz there are some restrictions) so people use the characters and the music from the games to make remix's or their own games / anime / books. its basically a mass community project. Bad apple is one of those "remix's" (its very different from a remix so i hesitate to say that). Course this is all how I understand it. I could be wrong and i appologize if i am but yeah. do your own research and reach your own conclusion. its genuinely such a fun rabbit hole to dive down.
basically a summary about the origin of this song + music video: Bad apple was first the name of a stage theme in the game Touhou 4, made by ZUN from 1998. The fan music group, Alstroemeria Records, made a "remix" of it and used the melody of the theme and created this song called Bad Apple. (they also wrote all the lyrics to it) sometimes later another fan saw that song and made a Story board for a music video containing a bunch of characters from the game. Then later yet another fan saw that story board and created the animation for this music video. And this video then went on to become viral even beyond the touhou fan bubble
also there is a good video that goes into the history (ah I'm now at the part of the video where he found the video) and as far as I remember no one knows anymore who did the animation and what program was used
@@GOTGames Starting from Touhou 6 and every other game after that is the official or (more accurately) ongoing series that is more known while Touhou 1-5 is known as PC-98 due to being separate from the main games. I'm pretty sure Bad Apple is one of the few or probably only BGM from PC-98 that got this popular, and adding the fact that this is just a stage theme instead of a boss theme is more surprising.
"If it exists, there is a Bad Apple version of it" Bad Apple is a huge piece of doujinshi music, an absolute hymn to the creativity of the Touhou (which you prononced perfectly) community. There is a huge rabbit hole of music to go through with Touhou. You can check out IOSYS, a group of music that is still active (and collabed with Marine) and which is, kind of, the messiah of Touhou fan music Edit: typos
Touhou is a series of bullet hell shooters made by a developer known as Zun. It has a massive fandom for a variety of reasons and has been going on for years, with a well developed world and a lot of banging fanwork projects. In terms of music there are a variety of songs, with every character having their own signature theme. There are tons of remixes, vocal versions and more of all the various songs.
@@GOTGames It is one hell of a Rabbit hole. The series has a massive fanbase, plus a ton of fan games and multiple official mangas. For reference there is one fan game series is basically Super Robot Wars.
@@GOTGames As a touhou outsider it feels similar to staring into the warhammer 40k rabbit hole. I just know there’s mountains of lore and fans works and don’t know where to start
A classic! Touhou music is not a rabbit hole, it's a black hole. The fandom is extensive, and had so much time and freedom to develop, the amount of content is staggering.
@@GOTGames I heard somewhere on Reddit, Touhou music is just so massive (prob more than 5000 by now), they have more than 3TB worth of the music alone.
As other has said Touhou is bullet hell series of games but an important part is that there is almost ZERO copyright involved. Thanks to this the fanworks for this series are insane, there are more than 100.000 covers of the songs easy with hunderds of games and even fan animes. It would not be strange to say more than half of the doujinshi artist of Japan around the 2000s have dabbeled into Touhou in one way or another. edit: On an related note this song was infamously covered on CNN earning them the nickname Cirno News Network. Cirno is an idiot character of the games.
To put Touhou's staying power into perspective: -In Comiket 102, it had the 6th highest number of doujinshi works out of 12 franchises/series. Comiket is Japan's largest anime and fan convention. -Toby Fox has mentioned a few times how Touhou and ZUN has been an inspiration to him. In an upcoming collab for a Touhou rhythm game, Toby Fox will rearrange U.N. Owen Was Her and ZUN will rearrange Battle Against A True Hero. -in this year's Hololive 4th Fes, the trio of Houshou Marine, Amana Kanata, and Nakiri Ayame performed this. It got the crowd particularly excited (not common for Japanese concerts), and apparently ZUN himself was in attendance
@@jakoski Last I checked, there could be developments since, ZUN is actually the sole owner of the Touhou franchise. He's just lenient, the lack of copyright issues is thanks to his good will. Now legally speaking an unenforced copyright can eventually be considered void I believe, but that's... complicated. He holds to one particular rule: don't rip the actual game assets (music, sprites...), but do feel free to make your own copies based on them, he won't interfere emphasis again on last I heard, it's been a while so this all can have changed
Ah, the good old 2000s internet. Project Touhou is a gold mine for amazing music, especially if you're a fan of synths and trumpets (two areas where Zun excels). And of course, there is the doujinshi scenery with amazing arranges and composition, Touhou truly is one of the pillars of the modern internet. Edit: There is a video from Megapig9001 (a Touhou youtuber) explaining the creation and history of this song, "Bad Apple Explained: History and Analysis part 1 and 2", I really recommend it.
Woooo Touhou! There's tens of thousands of Touhou songs, and Bad Apple is a great one to start with. For some more context on what Touhou is; Touhou is a series of games starting in the 90s under a genre called Danmaku (bullet hell), the games were entirely made by one person who did all the coding, art, music, etc. The franchise is still massive to this day and has spawned tens of thousands of covers or remixes of the original songs. I really hope you do decide to go down the Touhou music rabbit hole, it's literally never-ending.
i hope people actually try a single Touhou game and not just circlejerk the Bad Apple remix, Night of Nights remix and UN Owen was her overrated music meme train
Yooooo!! I never thought you would dive into the touhou franchise. The music. The games. The different characters. Everything about touhou is awesome. Touhou is a Japanese string of different very difficult bullet hell games which have inspired a lot of different songs, animations and even a fan made anime. The touhou fanbase is genuinely so incredible they made a fan made anime which I believe follows the story of the bullet hell games if I am correct. I highly recommend you look into touhou some more. In my opinion touhou has one of the best and most creative fan bases out there. My personal recommendation for you next if you want to look into touhou a bit more would be the animation pv called who killed U.N.Owen.
I honestly think, that Touhou itself is bigger than Anime-community. First of all these are games, but there are thousand professional covers of the original Touhou tracks. There are metal bands that cover Touhou songs (Shinigiwa Satelite, Undead Corporation, Foreground Eclipse), Eurobeat artists (A-one, SOUND HOLIC), Touhou Trance/Psytrance (Shibayan, EastNewSound,...), EDM (Senya). And that's just a small part of it, the artists i listed are only those that i listen to.
i hope people actually try a single Touhou game and not just circlejerk the Bad Apple remix, Night of Nights remix and UN Owen was her overrated music meme train
Since you're a Myth & Roid fan I would heavily recommend the Touhou Lostword Song "I'm alright". It features Kihow who is the current vocalist of Myth & Roid
Touhou is a bullet hell game franchise created by Team Shanghai Alice, a dojin game developer consisting of only one member, ZUN, he makes the story, the art, music, programming, everything. Touhou, in my opinion, is one of the pillars of the otaku and doujin culture in Japan, there are ALOT of fan works: novels, manga, music, fan animations, games, etc. This Bad Apple!! song is based on a BGM from the 4th game.
To add on to this, the reason it has been so embraced by the community is because Zun has a sort of creative commons agreement for the characters, the story, and the music that allows people to use them to create their own interpretations, so remixes of music and doujin manga and games are common. The agreement even allows independent creators to sell their works (as long as proper credits are given). A number of popular artists and musicians have gotten a foothold in the community through Touhou materials.
I'm pretty happy with how you talk afterwards about things instead of effectively going 'damn that's crazy, anyway see you next time' like some reactors do.
i always heard this song in different places but never knew where it was from and just recently found out when reddits touhou subreddit recreated the animation in r/place anyways love this song and the transitions are so good
Well ain't this a blast from the past. Touhou is technically a set of bullet hell games from Japan with a quite dedicated fanbase. In fact they are so dedicated that the version of Bad Apple you heard is a massive community effort in on itself. The base of the song is actually from stage 3 of the 4th game in the series, where it is an old 16bit style video game music. Later on the song became very liked amongst tohou fans to the point where in 2007 (9 years after the game itself came out!) a fan music group by the name Alostomeria records essentially puts together an album featuring remixes of touhou game music by the name Lovelight now featuring the version of the song you just heard with the vocals from a singer by the name Nomico. Later on a fan of this remixed version of the song by the username Mu created a rough storyboard sketch to the video asking people in the community for someone to make an animation out of his rough sketches. Many in the fandom tried with different end results with the version you saw coming out in 2009 (again the game the song is from came out in 1998) by someone with the username Anira. After that the combo of the remix and this video became a huge hit eventually making the jump from nicovideo (kinda Japanese youtube) to the west. As for the video itself, the charaters you see are actually characters from the first 10 touhou games, each doing their own moves to the beat. There is a video that does a great deep dive (and where I got most of the history of this song from) by the name Bad Apple Explained: History and Analysis from the channel Megapig9001.
to hopefully explain what this is- Touhou is a game created by ZUN because he wanted to demonstrate his musical talent (which he most certainly did) the game is a stage-based Bullet hell type game which is a bit of an ordeal to explain what any of that means, but all you need to know is it's a a very hard type of game to beat, and since it comes in stages each stage has a different song/theme and boss character to fight as you make your way through the story. the original version of Bad Apple did not have lyrics, it was the 3rd stage of Lotus Land Story which was the 4th game in the Touhou series. you should give it a listen, the music slaps even without lyrics. to be frank, this version of Bad Apple is a bit of a mix of things kind of collabing together. as I sort of hinted at I think, this is not the original version of Bad Apple. the song is actually more of a fan version that was created by nomico and uses the same pacing and beat of the original song and adds both lyrics and modern instrumentals. the animation itself is not made by either nomico or ZUN, although I couldn't tell you who the OG animator was. to summarize, TL;DR: the song is a recreation from someone of another song made by a different person for an anime-style game with an MV made by someone completely different. you basically have almost 3 different people collabbing on it. the characters the MV shows are the characters from the actual Touhou game series (which btw is in fact pronounced "T-oh-ho" like you prounced in the video) and you could find a list in the comments of the videos usually with fans listing the characters in order if you're interested> either way, excited to see you react to it cuz it's a banger, hope I helped!
6:50 this is mostly because Asian music tend to be written to a songwriters emotion and current mental state and not really pondering to a market like most western songs do ( Western music: breakup songs or get laid yesterday songs, Eastern music: This is how i feel and i am not afraid to let you hear it)
touhou (pronouced like toe and ho) is a game series that has had an incredibly massive influence on pop culture even though a lot of people don't realize it. the music is kind of the biggest part of its influence and there are dozens of artists completely dedicated to covers and remixes of touhou tracks with some releasing over 100 albums of just touhou related music.
This is so nostalgic! One of my favorite songs for a long time. I have to recommend a song called "Priere" now because I've never been sure if it directly ties to Touhou or just has the majority of videos towards it but it's such a great song I've been listening to for so many years. Also Touhou is kind of a whole community thing around original characters. I believe it originated as bullet hells (which are fun and have great music) but there's also RPG's, some fighting games, etc. It's almost like a whole community fan project thing going on last I checked.
I love this song so much and the animation is so fricking GOOD especially the transitions. There are ALOT of songs in this community and some of the lyrics are really hard hitting, i would love to see you dive a little bit deeper into this rabbit hole.
The best bit is the Tohou fans managed to animate this whole video this year on r/place on reddit. All while their neighbor, r/Canada failed to make a leaf.
@@Tystolfo well.. as an Example.. how big is Canada's Flag compared to Germany again? & they didn't managed to protect their flag from Trolls? :> The size of the Flag is significantly smaller..
One cool thing I just noticed while rewatching this animation is that Yukari shows up when the singer says 隙間 (sukima), which means gap/crack. Yukari is the youkai of gaps, so that's a cool detail. Has anyone noticed other references like this?
This is the first and the best Touhou's song i've ever heard from around 2000 till now It's like national anthem for Touhou for me anyways thanks for the react as always
Yes! a legend of a song that has music videos on every medium, and if it does not have a music video on a medium it will eventually! All of these characters and the instrumental are based off of a Game series of the "Bullet Hell" genre and the song from the games "Bad Apple", they just added Lyrics and remixed it, the fanbase is insanely talented and committed to the series!
i hope this guy listens to the official game osts and not just pressured into overrated remixes/music like Bad Apple remix and Night of Nights and UN Owen was her
So, Touhou was originally a series of bullet-hell shooters- basically, games based entirely around dodging massive, complicated swarms of projectiles. They were made by one guy (ZUN), and he made them stand out by putting in some amazing music, and making the player characters and the named enemies very memorable in appearance and personality. The characters you're seeing dancing in the video are some of the more well known and popular ones (well, really it's most of the cast of the early games). There's also a huge unofficial wealth of fanon built up around the series, that would honestly take hours to dive into fully. But suffice to say, it's a popular series, and it's popular for a reason. This video is one the things to come out of that, although I'll note that this is a remix/edit of the original video- that's why there were the strange slowdowns and stutters at some points. I'd recommend you watch the original, though maybe not on stream since you've already sort of seen it once.
Glad to see you really enjoyed this song. I'm a bit sad that you chose the only video that managed to screw up the animation which broke some of the transitions, but nothing can be done about that. Considering you enjoyed this, you might want to check the OST of the TOUHOU franchise. One I really recommend would be Lunatic Princess. I discovered it playing DDR and as some already stated: that's a rabbit hole big time.
Bad Apple has been played on just about anything you can think of, including: - actual apples - tesla coils - discord messages - TH-cam captions and much, much more, it's a whole rabbit hole of its own! I'd love to see a reaction to some of those videos as well!
This video is a showcase of many of the characters inthe touhou universe. Each silhouette is a different character. The universe itself is a shmup shooter game, usually.
Considering the other comments covered most of the main points about Touhou, from what the series is, to the fan works and music, est, let me help tie in the importance and popularity of Touhou to something you're familiar with; Hololive. Several of the Hololive talents are fans of the Touhou series and music, even in the EN branch. One of the biggest fans I can think of being Marine, who paired up with IOSYS to do a whole album of cover songs. Also, when this very song, Bad Apple, was performed during Hololive 4th Fes, the whole crowd went WILD. That just speaks to how big the series is over in Japan, at the very least. So big, in fact, they have an entire convention over there dedicated to Touhou alone. You thought learning about Hololive was a rabbit hole journey? Touhou is an even bigger rabbit hole. Main series or Fan works, games and music of all genres. Animations, artworks, mangas, you name it. Heck, for music alone, you have the original BGM from the main games, which is fantastic, and then you have all the songs and arrangements made by the fan community, for any BGM track, for ANY genre of music out there. Needless to say, you have your work cut out for you. Welcome to the fandom of Touhou. You're in for a wild ride, if you choose to stay.
I'm sure others are already explaining Touhou. But, on the subject; Marine has an album of Touhou covers, featuring many Holomembers as the back-up. The album is called "Gensyoko holoism". As far as I know, there's no official MV on TH-cam, but there are many fan uploads. I'd recommend at least listening to 'Hoihoi☆Gensou Holoism' , of all the songs in the album, that's the one that really feels like it was actually a Marine original.
Been waiting for Touhou content for a long time. This rabbit hole sure is one worth falling into🙂. Fyi, Touhou's a Bullet Hell video game series that's created by one person, known by his pseudonym ZUN, who's responsible for the development, music, story and more.
Bad apple (and it's video clip) is considered the mother of AMVs (anime music videos) making that a LOTA and i mean A LOT of covers, remixs and stuff are made of the same song and video. Is a meme to make the bad apple vid on anything like, lets say, stop motion. About Toho itself while i haven't played it i know is a videogame series that while is not as mainstram is like the base of otaku culture (a lot of anime memes come from toho somehow)
I know nothing about Touhou but even I know this song is iconic. It was really popular in the Vocaloid community back in the day, so it's really rare to find anybody in the Vocaloid/anime community who doesn't know Bad Apple!
you should listen to the official game osts and maybe even give the games a try. it's sad that people only follow the Bad Apple remix and UN Owen was her overrated music meme train when there are several games he created with hundreds of themes in total that are subjectively way better
9:21 - Yes. Which makes it a very personally touching song for me, given the name "talanton" means "a balance" or "a scale." It's a song about being stuck on the fulcrum, unable to move, unable to stand still. (At least that's my read of it.)
Touhou is like the biggest secret of the internet. Is easy to go on knowing nothing about it. But once you do finally learn what Touhou is, you realize it’s been everywhere the entire time, and you just didn’t know.
Now *this* is a 2hu classic! Marine would be proud of you. This series has thousands upon thousands of doujin songs, manga, games, and pretty much anything else. Lots of *excellent* metal covers of Touhou songs as well. U.N. Owen Was Her (Flandre's theme) is probably the most well-known song, and one to check out a metal cover of. RichaadEB's cover especially. Yukari best girl.
Tbh, although I am not a part of the touhou community, I have immense respect for them, the fans are some of the most dedicated people of all. if they decide to do something, it will be done.
I'm so glad you listened to this. Touhou is a bullet hell game series; think like Space Invaders where you have to dodge projectiles. This has a massive cult following and the soundtrack itself is originally the stage 3 theme from Touhou 5 Lotus Land Story which is like an 8bit ost. The fans came together to make this MV for the game depicting the characters from the series while the lyrics themselves are about Elly's (The girl with the curved scythe with a hat) depression and state of mind. They are a lot of other covers or doujin music for Touhou made by fans which are just as awesome and beautiful as Bad Apple. Also there's like a meme or trend going on since ages ago that you can animate the MV for Bad Apple on nearly anything.
the world of Touhou is a world full of yokais, ghosts and other magical beings like vampires but also shrine maidens and witches all portrayed as cute girls or women. At its core, Touhou is a video game series made up primarily of Bullet Hell or Danmaku shooters. You control a small figure yourself, often a spaceship, here a flying girl, and you have to deal with waves of opponents on a stage with a comparatively simple shot pattern, and ultimately assert yourself in a multi-phase boss fight. Each game is characterized by special mechanics. In addition, there are also several official spin-offs, especially classic fighting games. ⛩️
I didn`t expect this! Feels like I got a jackpot, such a nostalgy. Listened to it when I was a teenager, vocaloid was really popular then. Love your reactions and THIS was a really good surprise.)
i know it had already said before but man, the bizzare /pos versions this song animation has is incredible. from an apple, electricity, windows error, r/place, etc. the phrase 'if there is a way, there's bad apple' is very Very true.
Touhou is a doujin game series that's been around for about 25 years now, it's a bullet hell series known for its difficulty and its cute girls with silly headwear. Bad Apple is a BGM theme from the 4th game that came out in 1998 and what you just listened to was a rearrangement by Alstroemeria Records that added lyrics sung by nomico. It actually only vaguely sounds similar to the original track although you can definitely still tell that's what it's based on. The animation was done by a totally unrelated group that liked the song and wanted to make a video for it. It's a testament to the collaborative creativity of the Touhou community.
Touhou is a massive longrunner series of infamously hardcore vertical scrolling shooters, to the point that it's the first one to be called "bullet hell." There are other series that are even more masochistic these days, but it's hard to overcome the charm of Touhou. The Yin-Yang theme is endemic to Touhou as a whole, since Shinto and Shinto-Buddhism are major influences to the in-universe mythology, and most of the main protagonists are Mikos.
The video called 'Bad Apple Explained: History and Analysis' helps understand this video, how it came to be and what it is, if you are interested. It is really well done.
oh we dragging you into the Touhou (pronounced sorta like "toe hoe") music rabbit hole? Touhou is a long-running series of bullet hell games made by Zun. Zun makes some banger music, and fully supports fan-works, so many MANY groups (continuing to this day) went "hey this song is awesome what if we remixed/coverd it" resulting in songs like Bad Apple. Alstroemeria Records is the fan group that made this song, but another well known Touhou fan group you might want to check out is IOSYS. Oh and edit to mention: there are a LOT, SO VERY MANY, ENDLESS amounts of "Bad Apple made in ___" since the black and white style lends itself easily to making the animation with basically anything
I think the “disconnect” between subject matter and beat that was mentioned, for me generally helps communicate an anxious feeling I like a lot. Often it conjures a feeling of the world continuing faster than you can deal with or process. Examples of this in English songs are Rejoice by Andrew Jackson Jihad, and most of Days N’ Daze’s stuff.
Touhou is originally a series of games mostly known for their shoot em up games, difficulty, characters, and music. ZUN the game's creator and musical artist has a fairly open creative license. There are tons of spinoffs, fan made (games, music, and mods), official license (games, music, and anime). Bad apple is a song in one of the main games (originally bit style) this version is an independent group which did a cover and the video is from a different fan/s who was inspired by another fan who came up with the concept.
If you want another incredible version of this same song, look up Avlönskt's multilanguage version. Dude sings it in 12 different languages all mixed together with seamless transitions (I think you mentioned on a Calli song that you like language switches like that), with new wonderful instrumentals in the back too. Highly recommended. So, Touhou is a series of shoot-em-up games made by one guy who goes by the name ZUN. It has a very dedicated following of fans who are _extremely_ creative. The music of the games especially has spawned an endless amount of derivative works, with multiple bands existing just to make their own versions of Touhou songs, both vocal and instrumental - and oh man are there a lot of songs to adapt, there's currently 18 numbered main line games, and a number of side ones, and each main game has at least 17 individual songs in it. My personal favourite group is GET IN THE RING, especially their songs Festival Blaze (think that's how it translates), Harlequin, Unbind, and Rebirth. This song is a vocal version of the game song Bad Apple (originally from the fourth game of the series) by Alstroemeria Records featuring nomico on the vocals. The song was released in 2006. In 2009, a group of fans had made and released the black-and-white animation using a number of characters from the games, which now usually accompanies the song. It's one of the best known examples of the Touhou community's endless creative drive. And it's spawned a massive number of further versions. It's a major part of internet culture of an era. I'd recommend taking a look at the proper short version too on your own time, the animation flows _super well_ with the music. Your first pronunciation of Touhou is... even if not spot-on for the actual Japanese, it's on point for the standard one that English-speakers use. You'll do perfectly fine with that in the future, will have no confusion what you're talking about!
Man, ive been literally screaming for this reaction for the past year 😅 how come every time i give up on wanting certain reaction you do it 😆 BTW there is a really interesting story around this music video. Originally the song had no lyrics and didnt even sound like this but then bunch of fans came together and created simlified version of the video and i think a studio was created just to make this song and MV but yeah.... it all started from a forum (i think 4chan but i might be very wrong on this) Also now you must check Night of Nights a.k.a. Knight of nights a.k.a. Night of Knights 😅
Whoa, blast from the past! I know nothing about Touhou aside from the fact that they're games, but I remember coming across so many different versions/videos featuring this song as a teen!
I just heard this song randomly and it's remained as one of my favorites since. I'm particularly fond (if you want an English translation) the one by Cristina Vee, there's a version with this instrumental and there's a metal cover by RichaadEB that's awesome!
Yeah, Bad Apple was a remix of a song from one of the earlier Touhou games that was so loved by the community that a couple of fans worked together to make this animation for and has since become basically the Touhou national anthem as far as I'm aware. To the point where every year the Touhou community recreates this entire animation on r/Pixel and it's just a testament to the passion the community has.
It would have been better for you to watch the original PV that's 3:39 long which was uploaded to TH-cam by a channel called kasidid2. It has 75 million views. The one you watched extended that original PV to fit the full song which means unnaturally stretching out some parts. To explain it in simple terms, Touhou is the longest running indie/doujin game series and has always allowed fans free reign to create their own derivative works of its source material. As such, it has a VERY dedicated longtime fanbase. The sheer quantity and quality of fan-created works from this community alone may dwarf every other franchise's in comparison. If there's a series, there's most likely a Touhou parody of it somewhere. This includes a ton of outright playable fan games like parodies of Castlevania, Megaman, etc. as well as fanart, doujinshi, and videos of every type imaginable ranging from gameplay clears to comedy skits to 3D PVs to OUTRIGHT FAN CREATED ANIME. And let's not forget the music. There's been so much groups (circles) dedicated to arranging Touhou music that the current file size of the Touhou Music Lossless Collection is *1.55 tebibytes* with *67,197 files.* I'm fairly certain that if there's a genre you're into, there exists a number of Touhou songs already remixed into it. Even the Bad Apple you're listening to right now is an arrange of the stage theme of the same name by the music circle Alstroemeria Records. (Speaking of 3D PVs, you NEED to watch minusT's 3D animated Touhou fights at some point because they're incredible.) The shadow art PV set to Alstroemeria Records' arrange is a legendary video on the Internet. It's very famous and has garnered its own spinoffs like madlads carving it into actual apples, parodying it with characters from other series, programming it onto a TI-84 school calculator, animating it onto laser shows on Tesla coils, etc. Even recently there was a huge community effort to animate Bad Apple at r/place. One person could only place a pixel every 5 minutes and they managed to achieve ANIMATING the video among a sea of griefers and trolls. If you want to react to that, I think Mikarific's "Bad Apple!! but it's on r/place (HIGH QUALITY, NO FLASHING/ALIASING)" is the best one to watch.
Bro, there was an r/place recently, an internet event, where you and your community can place 1 pixels / 5min each, and tohou community made this whole animation video in three days or so, and then uploaded the motion on youtube. These guys are crazy, and literally, if it exists there is a bad apple motion made out of it.
Now for the rabbit hole, to experience Bad Apple PV fully animated on actual SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis hardware, on Flicker Switches, on the NES/Famicom, on an APPLE, on EVERYTHING! Then the final part, the original BAD Apple!! from the Touhou game Lotus Land Story.

OH MY GOOOODDDD, THIS IS ONE OF MY CHILDHOOD SONGS
(even though I don't understand a single thing because I never played the games)
Next Touhou song: The Empress :)
basically a summary about the origin of this song + music video: Bad apple was first the name of a stage theme in the game Touhou 4, made by ZUN from 1998.
Thank you for the back story ❤️
Great explanation,I knew all this but I hope more people read this, so commenting to help the comment stay relevant :D
Very well put. Concise and understandable explanation.
also there is a good video that goes into the history (ah I'm now at the part of the video where he found the video) and as far as I remember no one knows anymore who did the animation and what program was used
@@GOTGames
Starting from Touhou 6 and every other game after that is the official or (more accurately) ongoing series that is more known while Touhou 1-5 is known as PC-98 due to being separate from the main games.
I'm pretty sure Bad Apple is one of the few or probably only BGM from PC-98 that got this popular, and adding the fact that this is just a stage theme instead of a boss theme is more surprising.
"If it exists, there is a Bad Apple version of it"
Bad Apple is a huge piece of doujinshi music, an absolute hymn to the creativity of the Touhou (which you prononced perfectly) community.
There is a huge rabbit hole of music to go through with Touhou. You can check out IOSYS, a group of music that is still active (and collabed with Marine) and which is, kind of, the messiah of Touhou fan music
Edit: typos
TL Note: "doujinshi" refers to self-published works in Japan; can be games, music, manga, etc.
A lot of IOSYS music did not age well. I remember listening to it a lot like 20 years ago, but now some of the songs just sound like ear r*p*.

@@youbewonderin
Doujinshi is a specific term for fanmade printworks, the correct word to use is 'doujin' to describe fanmade works in general
IOSYS and beatmario worked with Marine right?
Touhou is a series of bullet hell shooters made by a developer known as Zun. It has a massive fandom for a variety of reasons and has been going on for years, with a well developed world and a lot of banging fanwork projects.
In terms of music there are a variety of songs, with every character having their own signature theme. There are tons of remixes, vocal versions and more of all the various songs.
Ha! "Banging fanwork" seriously tho, my head needs some cleansing.
@@ashenblood well guess what my fella, it dose have a lot of banging artworks too
Wow I had no idea it was its own rabbit hole 🤯
@@GOTGames It is one hell of a Rabbit hole. The series has a massive fanbase, plus a ton of fan games and multiple official mangas.
For reference there is one fan game series is basically Super Robot Wars.
@@GOTGames As a touhou outsider it feels similar to staring into the warhammer 40k rabbit hole. I just know there’s mountains of lore and fans works and don’t know where to start
A classic!
Touhou music is not a rabbit hole, it's a black hole. The fandom is extensive, and had so much time and freedom to develop, the amount of content is staggering.
This is SO accurate.
"Black Hole". There's no way I could argue with that
😂 down we go!
Black hole, that's perfect description. I did search for some touhou albums couple years ago and....yeah, there're countless of them.
It would not be strange to say more than half of the doujinshi artist of Japan around the 2000s have dabbeled into Touhou in one way or another.
edit:
On an related note this song was infamously covered on CNN earning them the nickname Cirno News Network. Cirno is an idiot character of the games.
Jeez I really had no idea it was this massive!!
To put Touhou's staying power into perspective:
-In Comiket 102, it had the 6th highest number of doujinshi works out of 12 franchises/series.
I believe Touhou is covered under Creative Commons specifically.
He holds to one particular rule: don't rip the actual game assets (music, sprites...), but do feel free to make your own copies based on them, he won't interfere
emphasis again on last I heard, it's been a while so this all can have changed

This is going to be fun!!
i hope people actually try a single Touhou game and not just circlejerk the Bad Apple remix, Night of Nights remix and UN Owen was her overrated music meme train
Ok who the hell pointed him towards _this_ particular rabbit hole? You cruel, cruel monsters.
Well done.
Tohou lore was described to me once as “All of Vtubing lore but made by one man”
i hope people actually try a single Touhou game and not just circlejerk the Bad Apple remix, Night of Nights remix and UN Owen was her overrated music meme train
Since you're a Myth & Roid fan I would heavily recommend the Touhou Lostword Song "I'm alright". It features Kihow who is the current vocalist of Myth & Roid

I'm just so impressed with the people who animated this on r/place 2023....it was amazing to watch!

A number of popular artists and musicians have gotten a foothold in the community through Touhou materials.
sad that people only follow the overrated music meme train that is the Bad Apple remix and UN Owen was her, but not give a single game a try.
There's also a great fan-made anime which you can find all the episodes of (and in good quality) on TH-cam.

i always heard this song in different places but never knew where it was from and just recently found out when reddits touhou subreddit recreated the animation in r/place anyways love this song and the transitions are so good
Well ain't this a blast from the past.
There is a video that does a great deep dive (and where I got most of the history of this song from) by the name Bad Apple Explained: History and Analysis from the channel Megapig9001.
jesus fucking christ i did not know it was that complicated. the touhou fandom is insane to me. and very cool. EXTREMELY intimidating, but very cool.
run while you can. touhou is the rabbit hole to end all rabbit holes. if you don't leave now you will be swallowed and won't ever be able to go back.
to hopefully explain what this is-
Touhou is a game created by ZUN because he wanted to demonstrate his musical talent (which he most certainly did) the game is a stage-based Bullet hell type game which is a bit of an ordeal to explain what any of that means, but all you need to know is it's a a very hard type of game to beat, and since it comes in stages each stage has a different song/theme and boss character to fight as you make your way through the story. the original version of Bad Apple did not have lyrics, it was the 3rd stage of Lotus Land Story which was the 4th game in the Touhou series. you should give it a listen, the music slaps even without lyrics.
to be frank, this version of Bad Apple is a bit of a mix of things kind of collabing together. as I sort of hinted at I think, this is not the original version of Bad Apple. the song is actually more of a fan version that was created by nomico and uses the same pacing and beat of the original song and adds both lyrics and modern instrumentals. the animation itself is not made by either nomico or ZUN, although I couldn't tell you who the OG animator was.
to summarize, TL;DR: the song is a recreation from someone of another song made by a different person for an anime-style game with an MV made by someone completely different. you basically have almost 3 different people collabbing on it.
the characters the MV shows are the characters from the actual Touhou game series (which btw is in fact pronounced "T-oh-ho" like you prounced in the video) and you could find a list in the comments of the videos usually with fans listing the characters in order if you're interested>
either way, excited to see you react to it cuz it's a banger, hope I helped!
Someone introduce touhou to this man please, it would be pretty great seeing him react to the actual games osts

touhou (pronouced like toe and ho) is a game series that has had an incredibly massive influence on pop culture even though a lot of people don't realize it. the music is kind of the biggest part of its influence and there are dozens of artists completely dedicated to covers and remixes of touhou tracks with some releasing over 100 albums of just touhou related music.

This song is iconic and I’ve only heard it just about a year ago. You can tell something about it just hits.
This song is apart of my childhood
I love that the community recreated the entire video in r/place 2023
Canada actually succeeded this time around.
I love that because of the trolls screwing and griefing the Canada community, people just go around saying they couldn't make the flag. Big sad.

Yes! a legend of a song that has music videos on every medium, and if it does not have a music video on a medium it will eventually!
Bad Apple has been played on just about anything you can think of, including:
- actual apples
- tesla coils
- discord messages
- TH-cam captions
and much, much more, it's a whole rabbit hole of its own!
I'd love to see a reaction to some of those videos as well!
Sound Holic also does a lot of Touhou arrangements that are accompanied by PVs. Might be worthwhile checking those out too!!
Marine is a massive Touhou fan by the way, there's a clip of her fangirling while talking with the creator of the games
1 Touhou song 1 video can generate hundreds, it's a gigantic genre and long history community.
Oh boy. He found the touhou rabbit hole….welcome to the crew!
I've been astonished by how much U.N. Owen infiltrated the internet everywhere
Fun little bit of trivia. Touhou is part of what got Calli into making music.
Let’s not forget that Marine and Fubuki are huge Touhou fans as well and have made a bunch of Touhou cover songs
OMG i recomended this so long ago, i didn't think i would see the day it would appear here.
Our community welcomes you with open arms
the world of Touhou is a world full of yokais, ghosts and other magical beings like vampires but also shrine maidens and witches all portrayed as cute girls or women.

i know it had already said before but man, the bizzare /pos versions this song animation has is incredible.
from an apple, electricity, windows error, r/place, etc. the phrase 'if there is a way, there's bad apple' is very Very true.
OMG this is such a banger, loved that they were able to recreate the video in that Reddit pixel thing :D
If you grew up or active on the internet during 2007/08 you'd have seen this song EVERYWHERE. Like seriously, this song super popular.
Fiiiine I guess I'll spend the day playing Perfect Cherry Blossom again
Shhiiittt the classics never die.
This song is one of the best.
Oh, I think you just opened the floodgates. If people have recommended you Touhou before then it's going to explode after this. Just wait and see.
Touhou (said toe-hoe) music is an endless rabbit hole. A lot of excellent stuff in there, even from very obscure creators.
Its still insane that this Community Hits with every Songs deep Messages
The metal version of the song is even better
you smirking along with Flandre at 2:54 is just the best haha
Man, did I not here this guy's name in a long time
I'd love to see more Touhou music reaction there's a lot of great music for it!
Man, ive been literally screaming for this reaction for the past year 😅 how come every time i give up on wanting certain reaction you do it 😆
BTW there is a really interesting story around this music video. Originally the song had no lyrics and didnt even sound like this but then bunch of fans came together and created simlified version of the video and i think a studio was created just to make this song and MV but yeah.... it all started from a forum (i think 4chan but i might be very wrong on this)
Also now you must check Night of Nights a.k.a.
That video was posted on October 27, 2009. Even after more than ten years, it still shines brightly.
(Speaking of 3D PVs, you NEED to watch minusT's 3D animated Touhou fights at some point because they're incredible.)
The shadow art PV set to Alstroemeria Records' arrange is a legendary video on the Internet.
Welcome to the early 2000's! 🛣
Touhou has a ton of great music be it fan covers or official tunes. And there is so much of a variation there is something for everyone.
Bro, there was an r/place recently, an internet event, where you and your community can place 1 pixels / 5min each, and tohou community made this whole animation video in three days or so, and then uploaded the motion on youtube. These guys are crazy, and literally, if it exists there is a bad apple motion made out of it.
I heard this song so many times from different artists, and only now, after all these years, I found out what was in the original. Lol.
Same. I knew of the original, but I've only heard cover versions of this, and many other Touhou songs.
TOUHOU--- dammit dude, I'm old lol I had a great friend that was a big fan of this franchise
Let's Go✨Touhou Francaise👏👏👏
Now for the rabbit hole, to experience Bad Apple PV fully animated on actual SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis hardware, on Flicker Switches, on the NES/Famicom, on an APPLE, on EVERYTHING! Then the final part, the original BAD Apple!! from the Touhou game Lotus Land Story.
Touhou community: We are inevitable.
