- This is as we in the states know it the BD578Z, The Venom E-X20.
In china they refer to this bike as the Monkey M3 or M5 (Tip for those looking for parts)
After building the Super73, and the Kona's. I have fallen deeper into the worm hole of EV.
Time to give building a higher power motorcycle a try!
The bike has arrived, I tossed in some temporary upgrades to hold me over until the new build.

20s7p lithium built by myself
Votol em200sp tuned by myself (contact me for votol tuning)
Stock hub motor opened to verify poles
Mods ordered and on the way
Green line Bac 8000 with Bluetooth app.
QS 12KW hub motor
Extended Swing-Arm
480 P42A 45 AMP 21700 Cells.
Still debating battery options at this point thinking 3 20s5p packs each one around 225 amps making a total of 675 battery amp output and 63ah, I may change this if I can fit more.

Greatest video ever! I think they call that model a Boom no? Can’t wait to upgrade mine mo.
Many names, it’s a Grom clone. They all use a gas Grom frame and then convert to electric. Several companies do this.
I’ve seen, boom, evader, venom and others.
thanks for the review! I just ordered one of these to put on the back of my campervan and charge via solar. I am thinking of upgrading to a 5kw motor, maybe mid drive if the QS mid drive assembly fits
I relied to other comment before seeing this.
I did the 12KW motor, only because I like over building things. The 5K should be perfect, you will want to pay attention to voltage and motor rpm.
The 12” wheel can be limiting in tire size. Max I believe is 20”. If you jump to a 13” you can get 22” which helps with mph vs rpm.
I love the bike so far, I am nearing 200 miles with it. (I installed everything after the second ride). I think the best bang for your buck is.

I had already purchased the controller and it’s limited to 72v or I would of build a 96v system for ease of rpm.

I was thinking about getting this to use it, but it is so shitty out of the factory that I will ended up getting a Sur Ron for twice as much since it comes decent for use already! or even get a gas bike and make a DIY kit on it!

I planned on testing the stock controller on lithium, excitement for the best of me. How ever 50 amps was not going to cut it haha
what type of lithium battery did you get and where? I am looking at 45ah batteries, but most top out at 150a BMS. is 150 amps enough?
@@taylorcuthrell4123 For this video I used a pack I made for another one of my bikes.
I used a 20s7p pack using P42A cells. So 140 of them.
Total of 29ah at 72v.
The stock motor cannot take more then around 75-100 amps depending on the voltage. So 150 is plenty, if you upgrade hubs (I highly suggest ) then you may want more.
The new battery (can be seen in other videos ) is 20s24P with a new battery box that’s longer, and deeper. It will house all 480 cells and the three BMS.
If you run two 45ah battery’s with 150 amp bms you would have 90ah and 300 amp of power which should be fun.
On the 29ah I can cruise 20 miles around 35/40 mph and I still have around 40% battery. Depends on the wind, how many stop and go etc.
I generally think 50-100ah is ideal for the bike.

I recently built an 8s 24V 132ah 3.2kwh LiFePO4 battery for my camper van, but that did not require spot welding nor is LiFePO4 the best for electric vehicle builds given its lower power density.
@@taylorcuthrell4123 I looked into using Lifepo4 for this, how ever the weight was the issue. Very high amp hour.
If you are not looking for all our performance but just a cruiser, you will only need around 50-100 amp of output.

Check those out, no spot welding. Maybe the weight won’t matter to you?
I’m very knowledgeable of gas bikes but your 3 steps ahead of me here. Do you have a e-bikes 101 video?
I'm about to order this bike. What would be good place to start for upgrading the battery and controller first? I'm not looking for crazy range or power bump, but would like the bike to go around 50mph if possible without breaking the bank and keeping it reliable.

Nice upgrade thinking about doing the same definitely want more speed …….. also have you ever tried to wheelie this ? I have one and just wanted to know if it was possible????
It's since been highly modded so can only speak in that forum.
It will wheelie, I personally cannot ride a wheelie so horrible person to ask how well it can. I can't even wheelie a pedal mtb.
It will lift front tire to 12 o'clock if you 100% throttle it below 10 mph. Past that it will lift the front tire a few inches until 20. I've never tried yanking the bars and doing a wheelie, but at 400 Ft lb of tq I am sure it would.
Would just adding a 100 amp controller be the best single addition you could do for this? Basically looking to have a 50mph top speed, but beyond that the bike fits my needs
The stock winding is not capable of 50mph without using flux. Which is very inefficient. Best is a high mph winding or 96v swap.

72v 50A, you can add lithium to it. It's a bit more fun.
Upgraded controller with FOC on stock motor is the best bet. Something like a votol em150/2
I don't understand.. ?!?!
If the motor says its rated at 72v 1980W (27Amps). Why doesn't the original controller burn up the windings if it is rated at 72v 50 Amps (3600W) and then you add an upgraded controller that will feed it even more. You also state in the video that the Stock motor is good for MAX amps of 80-90.. I'm a little confused on the numbers and matching components. I'm familiar with electronics and BLDCS. I guess with my confusion I'm still a noob. But as I sit right now and watch, My head is like 1+1=4 ?!?! I understand that these may be peak numbers and not RMS/ Constant.
Is there anyway you could sum this up or point me to a website or video that would help me better understand this? Greatly appreciated! Good job on the video's and projects!
Thermal limits.
Basically exactly what you said, the rating they offer is continuous.
Meaning you can run that motor at that power all day long at its full rated load.
Since we are often well below the rated load, and using bursts of power we can go much higher.
My new setup on the grom, say I am doing 60 and cruising at 6kw.
The motor is rated for 12kw. I do not see any temp rise. If I floor it, which is 55kw. I speed up to 80 in seconds. At that point i lift or power is reduced as max rpm is hit.
So its able to handle this power under brief periods. If I went up hill and held it at 55kw the winding would melt fast.
I use thermal throttling meaning if a motor over heats the power is reduced until cool.
If you are just going to wing it, and go full send. You will most likely burn one up.

I was wondering if you could be so kind to tell me what the parameters are to work with the 200 watt Qs motor. I don't know if it'd be too much to ask. But please let me know I almost wish I could ask you for the file so I can just save the parameters to my controller. Anyway, happy one happy to cash up you some money or anything for your help. Votol tuning can be very tricky.
Is there any video showing how you put all the upgraded parts in the bike?. I purchased one of these bike and Im very interested in upgrading all necessary parts to make it as fast as yours.
Some required some custom work, I wish I could have recorded every step, and shown it. How ever my video skills are not that developed yet. How ever I do have a full parts list of what's used and can gladly help with any questions along the way!
