    Stuff we use:
    CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
    LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
    Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
    Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
    LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
    COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
    EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

    I don't know if others feel the same but Jeff Kitchen speaks to my soul. Thank You Film Courage for this profound conversation.

      Thanks Tariq, lots more to come! This interview is very in-depth and we still just scratching the surface. It's going to pick up soon.

      He speaks very little to or about souls.

    Strikes me that a singular difference between story and drama is that story is told by the teller but drama is enacted through performance

    "People put all of this energy into trying to turn a weak idea into a stage worthy script." It gets worse. These weak ideas are actually becoming stage ready scripts and being produced! I watch films almost daily and its true! So, is it the fault of the writer who writes the weak idea or the person who produces the weak idea? Seriously!

      It all comes down to money, so it's the fault of the producer and the money people.

    There’s definitely a difference between storytelling ability and writing ability. Of course, writers will usually have a combination of both skills, but most will lean one way or the other. For myself, I find that once I have an idea, I can execute it well, but occasionally, I struggle coming up with ideas worth executing.

    Key takeaway: your story must have magnitude. It must be compelling in a significant way. No one wants to watch a story about me de-worming my cat and he threw up my favorite jacket, but they might if my cat woke me up because my apartment complex was on fire and I saved the family next door from certain death.

    Of the skills to master, I'd add Jeffrey Sweet's advice from The Dramatist's Toolkit, especially if you're still taking classes - journalism and acting: journalism to master brevity and acting to master how scenes works. He said it better than that, but I was going for brevity.

    • @mathikumar491

      simplicity and clarity is the key, if there are two different story lines happening parallelly in the same script, somehow they have to come together organically in a meaningful way to give a single clear idea of what's it all about. we cannot develop a good script from a weak idea.

    Basically what I gathered, storytelling: is your idea having a cause and effect and magnitude. Dramatist is how you showcase or present the story how you literally have the actors act it out in a way that it’s compelling and aligns with the storytelling.
    Ex: Mary had a little lamb she was white as snow is the story. A novice dramatist, as is my case, might say: Mary scooted closer to her lamb, her bony knees scrapping against the dirt but she barely registered the pain. Her frail hand strained to reach, small fingers longed to brush against the lambs wool to feel something soft, even if for a moment. She paused, catching herself -no she didn’t want to ruin the lambs wool like everything else in her life. So she wiped her tears and admired her lamb from afar that should be enough for someone like her,😂 corny lol but I think that’s Jeff meant?? Just how you dramatize the story

    I think the internet and youtube creates a lot of technicians but I wish there was more "tutorials" about that core thing he's talking about; the part that mustn't suck out of all the parts.

    I'm curious.. can someone give me an example of a "bad" story idea? I really do feel that potential automatically comes attached with most ideas. However, I also feel as though people can have a troubling time with effectively executing/communicating their idea in a compelling way.

    • @atallguynh
      @atallguynh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bad story idea:
      1) narcissistic yet charismatic charlatan challenges legitimacy of beloved/reviled world leader
      2) world leader humiliates charlatan at major social/charity/comedy event
      3) charlatan vows to get revenge
      4) world leader dismisses charlatan as a joke
      5) charlatan proves he is no joke, getting his revenge by becoming the successor to world leader
      6) new world leader blossoms into a full on demagogue, is polarizing like no leader before
      7) old world leader successfully helps his deputy overthrow (legitimately? depends on who you ask) and succeed new world leader
      8) but, not before new world leader nearly succeeds in a coup to maintain power.
      What next? Will democracy crumble? Will the deputy overplay his hand? Stay tuned...

    • @atallguynh
      @atallguynh 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe it's not a bad story idea per se, but I don't think any of us, on either side, is enjoying living it.

    • @tonylee7596
      @tonylee7596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You answered your own question imo. Pick a story idea and execute it bad and you got yourself a "bad" story.
      (One of) The reason(s) some stories/ideas "don't work" even if you execute them exceptionally is marketability.

    • @scottbowers9061
      @scottbowers9061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonylee7596 perhaps, story & execution are sides of the same coin.
      And.. you're right. Marketability plays a role, but there's a time and place for everything. Someone's script may not get optioned today, however, there's always tomorrow.

    As soon as these cooks start their First knowledge or.... anything and skip African folktales, literature and stories as if the Romans, Greeks and English started telling dramatic stories while Africans were sitting in the dark thumb fighting I tune off. Your knowledge, your education and thus your basis of storytelling is flawed. The Bible itself is a recreation of African stories.
