      Thanks Tariq, this video doesn't come close to scratching the surface of our interview with Jeff Kitchen. Lots more to come. Keep an eye out.

      @@filmcourage The timing of this video couldn't be more perfect. I was so down trying to figure out the script of my first low budget feature film. So far i've attempted and abandoned so many ideas and then today i eventually felt lost.
      I've spoken to my sister earlier and she said "Make the movie that has you in it. Even if you are not seen on the camera but people will know that's you." So I went back to my very first feature idea based on a personal story and as i was thinking about that story then bam this video poped in my youtube feed lol. After talking to my sister and listening to this video i feel truly inspired and motivated to work hard.
      Thank You film courage. I'm so looking forward to the whole interview.

      Great to see you finding inspiration here. That is the most important thing.
      Our interview with Jeff is one of the most in-depth writing interviews we have ever done. He lives and breathes the craft and his teachings will benefit many. We are excited to share more in the coming weeks and months.

    I hate people saying “ isn’t that like (blank)?” And most of the times it shares a setting or a theme only.

      That's what happens when you focus on the components and not the whole

      I see that with webcomic/webtoons/manhwas all the time. I don't like when people do that because then a good story gets passed on by readers because of that one idiot.

    It’s hard to tell a completely new story but if you can tell a familiar story in a unique way then you can still be on to a winner.

  • @filmcourage
    @filmcourage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Do you get mad when people tell you every story has already been told?

    • @SebastianHernandez-nq2st
      @SebastianHernandez-nq2st 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nope. We put too much weight on things being "original", but tend to forget that we still need our stories to connect with others. Something truly original would be too complex or too distant from the human experience. We don't need original stories, we need honest stories.

    • @merlinjames5954
      @merlinjames5954 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, because it's true that complete originality is impossible as every story comes from something, but stories have STILL been told throughout history. Just applying different ideas and such from other stories and your own life in a way that only you can tell it is what makes something original if you ask ma. Originality is just as possible now as it was 500 years ago. To write it off by saying every story has already been told is lazy to me.

    • @Ryuksgelus
      @Ryuksgelus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes because even if that is technically true many stories are retold far more often than others. Like there is far more soft-science fiction than hard-science fiction. It's sad when people think genres are defined by their tropes. Too many potential stories get watered down and stripped of what makes them unique because they (seemingly) lack broad appeal.

    • @Ryuksgelus
      @Ryuksgelus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SebastianHernandez-nq2st Why not both? Seems a strangely binary view even if you're not trying to say originality and honest aren't mutually exclusive. Also who is "we"?

    • @SebastianHernandez-nq2st
      @SebastianHernandez-nq2st 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ryuksgelus Aspiring to achieve both honesty and originality is not impossible, just very very difficult. Here's the thing: if I ask anyone "what is something original you can create?" most of the answers will be variations of "something new, innovating, or avant-garde". On the other hand, if you ask them "what is something honest you can create?" The answers are infinite. In a certain way, to create something honest is to create something unique (or original in this case). Honesty can only come from you. Wanting to create something "original" depends on everything but you. As by "we" and "them" I mean most of us people. Almost every call for entries at any film festival will ask for films to be "original". None of them ask the films nor filmmakers to be honest".

    Just about the most affirming interview on screenwriting I’ve experienced.
    As an aside, when it’s said that one must be a lover of movies in order to become a successful screenwriter I do recoil. I am a lover of movies that move me; however I’m sorry to say a great many movies bore me.

    It's a fact, that every story has been told and every song has been written. But you can tell the same exact story in such a way, that nobody saw before. It's up to you HOW are you gonna tell the thousand-year-old monomyth. Same with music, there are only 7 notes and music structure is practically the same in every song, but the way you combine these 7 notes into chords and how you choose your chord progression directly influences the emotion you want to invoke, it's not the journey that matters, but the emotions we get during it.
    I look at it as a game of chess: yes, this game has certain rules that severely restrict you, but with only 16 pieces you can make an almost infinite number of moves. Those borders do not limit us but set the direction.

    people have lack of imagination.
    I think there are many stories that have been told, but they can be told in many different ways.
    And everyones mind and imagination is unique, so really the possibilities are endless.

    Saying that every story has been told is like saying a computer and a table are the same object because everything breaks down into electrons and protons. It's the combination of ideas that form a story's unique identity.

    but on the other hand, there really is a lot of copycat movies out there and always has been and always will be. On the whole, Investors are risk-averse and want reassurance that what they are backing has succeeded already.

    Film Courage, I know this is obnoxious because I'm changing the subject. But will it be harder selling a screenplay during Covid? And will you get paid less for a screenplay? I've searched everywhere and I can't find the answer.

    Has he written a film? Very interesting ideas. We wouldn't have millions of books or a film industry if there is only 8 stories in the world. This idea, as he suggests, is Bullshit. Capital 'B' is with intent.
