Think of your dream life as … a wall. A wall doesn’t just appear out of thin air. You have to build it, one brick at a time. And you need to *focus* on laying each brick instead of focusing on your non-existent wall. Not only so that your future wall will look and feel right because you’ve done the job right but because the PROCESS of building the wall that represents your life…*that* IS your life. Life is the journey. It’s all the little moments between the big moments. We all need reminding of this from time to time! Renovating a house. Lads. It is such an absolute shit show haha, just like doing a degree or falling in love or having kids or writing books! There’s aaalways cost, there’s sleepless nights and tears, there’s disappointment … but so many millions of moments of joy, too. Purpose. Enjoyment. Learning. Re-learning. Excitement. Satisfaction. Stress. Magic! Building a life is all of that and SO much more! If you are sitting, waiting for someone else to build YOUR life … if you are scrolling online watching other people build THEIR lives … this is your invitation to reach for that first brick. It might be a therapy call or a chat with an estranged family member. It might be accepting a party invite or it might be setting up a dating profile. Maybe it’s applying for a new job. Getting a personal trainer! Reading a book that might inspire you! Or maybe you first need to reach for a hammer. Maybe you gotta knock some walls that just ain’t working for you! So you can build your life anew. And you can. You *absolutely* fucking CAN.
I was recently diagnosed with schizoaffectice disorder and complex PTSD. I really want to become a mum and have 2 or three kids but financially I'm relying on the government. I'm studying an access course in the hopes to become a mental health nurse. I know that we have different lives but I want to say that your videos give me a lot of hope during my struggles and make me dare to dream of a better future and I really admire what you've managed to accomplish. Hope you are well. X
I am doing kind of good, I have decided to drop out of college bc it was tearing on my mental health, and have started to see a therapist which is a slow process but I am getting there Have realized that my PMS isn't healthy and is causing me more trouble than it should and makes me feel horrible for about 2 weeks but I'm going to a doctor in October to talk about it so progress 😅 Have the beat friends in the world tho who are all helping me through it ❤️❤️ And I live in my favorite city and in a really nice apartment ❤
i really needed to hear this, almost made me cry 🧡 thank you for being so grounded and continually showing up as yourself. so grateful to have role models like you to look up to.💜
REMEMBER when picking a paint color, the color will be darker when you paint all the walls because the light isn't bouncing on white anymore. So if you like a shade, go a little lighter
I cannot express with words how much I love your content, so let's hope the algorithm is algorithming so many more people find you. The love you have for your family and the relationships you've built are nothing short of an inspiration.
I really appreciate you continuing to share this journey with us Melanie, thank you. It's so important to see representation of different ways of living, and I think the modern ultra-individualist rhetoric is designed to divide and conquer (with the winners being profit making organisations), there are so many advantages to intergenerational living (if you get on with family!) and I think more people would do it if they could/didn't feel discouraged in doing so by the general message we're given.
Honestly the boob on the wall thing is something that you get used to haha. My mum has always had nude artwork of women in the house and as a kid it didn't phase me. I'd even say it's good practice to show bodies as they are- just existing! Enjoy your art piece, it's a beautiful addition to your home:)
I’ve always loved watching the way you and your dad interact on various vlogs throughout the years - your banter and the love and respect you have for each other is beautiful 💖 Your home with this renovation really gives you both the best of both worlds! Your dad has his own dedicated space and privacy, but he’s also close by to spend ample time with you and his grandchildren 💖 It’s honestly a delight having the chance to see how you have built your dream life over the years, Melanie, and I’m so grateful that you continue to share with us!
Just wanted to say that i follow you since years. Since maybe 8 or so years? You have being part of my learning english journey and i dont miss a video. Have a nice day!
Commenty, commenty, algorithm, commenty. Seriously though, absolutely looooving the content at the moment and if you didn't manage to post for two months we'd all be fine with that!
I remember when I watched an acne video of yours way back, and you made some offhand comment about having kids and I thought, you'd make A great mum. I wasn't wrong.
I adore how your life has evolved and your family dynamic with your dad and siblings has been able to flourish over the years. I can imagine 8 years ago when your dad had his heart attack to imagine the life you are living currently with your children having such an amazing connection with your dad and being able to live in a multi generational house, was probably never even a thought of what could be. To be able to be part of this journey and see how the life you dreamt of has been built, has been such an honour and privilege, and I'm just so happy for you that you've been able to build this life and these memories 💕
Furniture design gallery in Navan! There's a load of other family run furniture making companies on that road as well (beechmount home park - but not the sherlock place.). They custom-made our couch, and its so comfortable. Like I've slept on it all night and not felt a thing next morning. Most of those places can make adjustments to the height of the seat, or back, or whatever to it fits your sitting position. That road is the place to go if you know what you want in a couch.
After living in Ireland last year for my Erasmus (Dublin specifically) your videos for some reason hit different. it feels a little bit like being welcomed into my second home again. So it’s so wonderful watching you create your home. I miss Dublin so much and listening to your accent as well as seeing the glimpses you show us from there makes me somehow feel at peace. Have been watching for ages now, I think definitely 6 years or longer. So happy to see how your life unfolds. Thank you for making these videos for us ❤
Commenting for the algorithm bc I think your content is very wholesome and fun to watch even for a childfree-would never move into a big house-type of gal like myself, so I hope your videos get favoured by the mysterious TH-cam gods
Posting a comment for the first time after coming from your stories X looking forward to watching this! You deserve a break, very bad that the algorithm pushes unregulated work/overwork
Your dad reminds me so much of my dad and Pa. My Pa used to tell he “dammit I woke up” or “Lord just take me now”. My dad is the same now in his 60’s. Terrible for a child to hear that loves them young but as you get older you kind of feel the same 😂😂😂😂.
You have made this rainy Sunday ten times more cozy Mel - thank you!!! My favourite thing to do lately has been to cuddle up with some crochet projects and watch your videos
Usually a lurker but watched this while moving into my accommodation for my MA, loved the cosy vibes and how you show the journey of building a life you love - gets me thinking about the future I want to build for myself 💚
For your sofa, I really do recommend John Lewis. It is the sort of obvious option, but they always have decent quality and plenty options, and the last piece of furniture I bought there had a 20 year warranty. I’m biased as my grandparents had John Lewis stuff and it was near indestructible for all the grandkids messing with them for years, they still stand now. As for art, I really do suggest Projekt 26. Just awesome stuff
We got two amazing couches from EZ Living and tested out the couches in their showroom. We have green walls exactly like yours and have a deep blue velvet couch for guests (bit more snazzy and modern) and then a really comfy, chunky light grey couch which is our ultimate chill out spot and a nice contrast to the dark, sleek couch.
watching only because i want to support you and I love you and I want to help show the algorithm of not just youtube but life that you can take time away and being a mom is a fulltime job and you don't fall behind because you are human
Love intergenerational living😁 I moved back to my home town to be close to my Nana. Am getting my quartz countertops from granite tops, they're such a good price for the quality! For sofa's you could look at homeline furniture. I know its a bit of a trek in Tipperary but they are the comfiest couches I've ever had.
Comment for an algorithm boost! It's so lovely to see someone living the life similar to the one I'm working towards 💕 Thank you for taking us with you!
We got our couch from Sofas by Design in Beechmont home park - couldn't recommend them more they were so good and everything was up to us they literally build the couches from scratch. Even if you don't go with them it's a great retail park to visit cause there's LOADS of furniture shops. It's up in Navan so not too far from Skerries 👍
Your house content is such a treat. It feels so relatable. House projects in my home take so. long, so seeing that your projects also happen in between real life is reassuring. And I always appreciate how much you like what YOU like and not what is trendy. Inspiring
Yay! Soooo excited this video came up today - I always love to chill with you on a cozy weekend mornin! BIG love to you Melanie, thank you for your videos and all of the time you devote to them. xoxo
silent viewer here! I've watched your videos for 10+ years, recently moved abroad by myself and your videos give me such comfort while in a strange new place!
Newcomer to the multigenerational living situation. My husband and I moved onto his parents property last year. The two of us plus our 2.5 year old live in a travel trailer on their land. It’s both wonderful and awful at the same time. Small living has been an easy transition, and I don’t at all mind being in a trailer. However- I dearly miss the privacy, the solitude, and the independence that came with living on our own. There’s also the dynamic of choosing which spouses parents. I find that I often day dream about living near or with my own father versus my husbands, and am saddened my daughter hardly knows she even has another set of grandparents. Love the cottage, and hang in there with the chaos of renovating. . . . It never truly ends. Just a rotation of what needs done the most ❤
Mostly a comment for the algorithm, but thanks for the realistic reno content! We have an old home as well (1912), and our renovations aren’t quite as ambitious, but it is still SO much work and SUCH a mess, especially with children in the mix and nap times and hazards to navigate. Such a joy to watch your progress!
I'll be visiting Ireland for the first time in January!! Been a dream and I can't wait to see everything in person, especially after watching your vlogs for so many years! Any recommendations on places to see/things to do from anyone is appreciated ❤
Super happy for your family that it's all coming together at long last! :) I've been subscribed since your early days on YT & just love watching it all. Thanks so much for continuing to take us along with you. Fair winds & slainte!
I just moved to uni so it's a new chapter for me too! I'm decorating my own space for the first time so this series is even more relevant to me now, but it's just nice to have something familiar when everything else has changed
I never comment but I just think you're brilliant at capturing the beautiful chaos of life and I find your journeys so inspiring to follow. I'm always brightened up by seeing a glimpse of your life and you hitting all these milestones 🥺🥺 Keep it up Mel youre da best!
I absolutely love all of your videos and am always happy to wait for 3 weeks, if that means getting such a genuine and heartwarming glimpse of your life. You always inspire me to believe that I’ll achieve my dreams if I keep on trying to be the kindest version of myself 💚
So inspirational watching you build your dream life! Wonderful to see a realistic journey of what it takes for people to slowly build the life they want ❤
Loved this video Mel! My husband and I welcomed our in laws onto our property too, and we're all grateful we made the decision. Even if they don't stay there forever, it's so great to have people you can share maintenance and the cost of living with, and for someone to be at your place when either of us goes on holiday. It's great to hear from you and your dad how well it's working for you, as it's not something you hear much about from millennials!
Between your dad and Thomas, that shed will be filled! My parents have a garden shed with the many MANY garden tools (though not all bought by my dad, my mum loves pottering around in the garden) and because neither my car (they’re babysitting it whilst I’m in LA) or my parents car can get up the driveway since the fence was redone, my dad has all his tools in the garage. And there’s A LOT. Plus random stuff accumulated over the years
Great to see your updates! Wow, I can't imagine how you're all getting along living through all the renovations, one after another! They are really disruptive and messy and so many decisions to make. I just got through about a year of home remodeling projects, one of which was a total remake of the main floor bathroom, and I'm still sorting things out a few months later. How sweet that you have found a way to live with your dad so you each have space to yourselves but can be there for each other. Best wishes to Papa Murphy with his health!
Thankyou for continuing to share content, it's so lovely and cosy! It's been quite the journey hasn't it, all the hard work is paying off for you all 💚
Really getting the remodeling is always a mess part! I can happily say that after 2,5+ years we are finally at a stage where we don't HAVE to finish the next project to live comfortably. I think we're going to enjoy that for a few months until we inevitably start the next project. Seeing your life and house come together so beautifully really brings me joy. Been following you for so long now and I really wish you guys all the best! 💚 Also please enjoy every second of being close to your dad. We had a grandad shed for my actual grandfather and it was absolutely wonderful living so close to my best friend. When he got sick and needed care, me and my mom were there for every single thing he needed. 'No stranger's hands on my body!' He would always say. And that's a promise we were able to keep because we lived so close to one another. I still hold so many fond memories of the time we spend together at that house. Just waking up, making a pot of coffee and being able to share it with the ones you love most in a beautiful garden is truly underappreciated! ☕❤️🕊️
Coming over after your insta story! Sorry I’m usually a silent viewer. Anyway, love your videos ❤ And my toddler LOVES Julia Donaldson too…she actually lives locally to me which is pretty cool x
Things are coming along! Super pleased for you. We moved into a new build about a year ago with a toddler and now we're expecting our 2nd. Have we decorated a single room? Nope. 😅 I super appreciate the hard work that's gone into what you've done because I'm just putting that off here haha
Thank you for sharing your life with us Melanie! 💚 As someone as a mom to be (30 weeks now) I just love watching how your family has come along and all the house things. Very cozy and a much appreciated distraction. 😅
I love watching these chapters in your life - I have been following you for years and years and watching you graft for the life in the place you are now fills me with so much hope that I might be able to do the same some day
The amount of extra space you gained is amazing! I cannot wait to see how it all works out! Everything so far has been so beautiful 😍 Thanks for sharing!
I grew up my entire life with my parents, grandparents, and uncle in the same house. I can’t imagine life any other way, my grandma is my best friend, and it taught us all so much💕
I don’t know if you have Annette’s in Ireland but our L shaped sofa from their is incredible. So comfy. We’ve actually slept it on several times when we’ve had guests as it’s so comfortable x
I missed you guys so much! 🤗 I am so pleased to see how things are coming along with the reno. Intergenerational housing is something I've been talking about with my parents as well (wanting to buy a house with land to add units for parents and sister) since the housing market in Canada is also crazy. I'm a nurse, but while working on a 2nd degree in education I'm living with my parents (no partner yet either), and I know going in on a property with my family is the only way I'll ever be able to afford a home. My mum moved across the country from her parents, and her brother was the primary carer for my grandparents as they got older, and I know she wishes she could have visited more than just summers and been there for them more easily. Like you, we had a health scare several years ago for my mum and I want to be near them and medical services in the event that something happens. I also like the idea of being just a bit out of city and having green space for my future kids and dogs to run around (and say run across the shared yard to grandma and grandpa's house). Thanks for sharing all the exciting new happenings with your family. P.S. you've got a name idea for the shed, but have you named your house yet? And when do you think you'll get your big white dog Albus? 💚💚💚
these videos always make me really excited to have my own place of some kind sometime. and I know renovating can be so stressful and exhausting but you focus more on the nice aspects like getting to make everything exactly how you want it and being playful with it all. :)
Love that the grand-dad pad is almost done! So happy you guys get to have family close by. I always tell my mom that the dream would be to buy an old farm house that is down the street from where she lives and renovate it so that me, my husband, our baby and my mom and stepdad could live together (we'd section off so they'd have more private space) because we love them so much and just want to have them close (even though they only live 10 mins away now... lol). Maybe one day that dream will come true!
Always so happy to see a new video from you, Mel 🥰 (loooong time viewer not commenter!!). Excited to snuggle up with a cuppa and some biscuits and watch this tomorrow 💚💚💚 sending big loves to you and yours!! xxx
Think of your dream life as … a wall. A wall doesn’t just appear out of thin air. You have to build it, one brick at a time.
I am doing kind of good, I have decided to drop out of college bc it was tearing on my mental health, and have started to see a therapist which is a slow process but I am getting there
Have realized that my PMS isn't healthy and is causing me more trouble than it should and makes me feel horrible for about 2 weeks but I'm going to a doctor in October to talk about it so progress 😅
Have the beat friends in the world tho who are all helping me through it ❤️❤️
And I live in my favorite city and in a really nice apartment ❤
Lovely video and some very inspiring writing here
No wonder you’re a writer, this is beautiful 💚 thanks Mel, always wishing you the best
i really needed to hear this, almost made me cry 🧡 thank you for being so grounded and continually showing up as yourself. so grateful to have role models like you to look up to.💜
REMEMBER when picking a paint color, the color will be darker when you paint all the walls because the light isn't bouncing on white anymore. So if you like a shade, go a little lighter
Yeap...made that mistake this year:D hahaha
So true! I bought i light blue that I thought was way too light, but now the room is the bluest thing I’ve ever seen lol. I like it though!
Dad taking care of you, to you taking care of dad. This is a beautiful example of a healthy family dynamic
I cannot express with words how much I love your content, so let's hope the algorithm is algorithming so many more people find you. The love you have for your family and the relationships you've built are nothing short of an inspiration.
Totally agree!
Totally agree.
I love the way you try to explain his illness and then he said I'm Fucked it made me giggle you dad is a character
Honestly the boob on the wall thing is something that you get used to haha. My mum has always had nude artwork of women in the house and as a kid it didn't phase me. Comment for the algorithm but also because I watch every single one of your videos religiously, you uploading is usually the highlight of my day! 💚💚
As someone with a 15 month old who’s renovating a house built in 1979, I love that you show the absolute chaos 👌 we love a realistic girlie 👏👏👏
Bilbo is back! Yay!!

My dad says the same exact thing, about "not needing to be cared for" & "put me out to pasture!" It kills me. I dream of taking care of him, too.
I love your dad. Says it's how it is, and he cracks me up. Reminds me of my dad

I just put your videos on whenever I need some time to relax and this one is no different. Love the laid back and cosy atmopshere :)

Plus random stuff accumulated over the years
Loved the chat with your Dad ❤
You are such an amazing person! And your family is beautiful!
this was so warm and cozy ❤
I must come down to see the place soon. Looks great!! Can't wait to have a wee gander at your dad's house once he's in!! ❤❤
All I want is a garden, sigh. Love the content!!
It's been quite the journey hasn't it, all the hard work is paying off for you all 💚
I love your videos
Theyre always so cozy and real
Thank u 😊
I generally love your creative closings, but this one is the best in my opinion. :) 💚💚💚
Need a utility room update next!! Love seeing your realistic reno updates 💛
Things are coming along! Super pleased for you. We moved into a new build about a year ago with a toddler and now we're expecting our 2nd. Have we decorated a single room? Nope. 😅 I super appreciate the hard work that's gone into what you've done because I'm just putting that off here haha
So wonderful to see how far you've come. What a blessing to be so close to your dad (literally and figuratively :D)
I can’t imagine life any other way, my grandma is my best friend, and it taught us all so much💕
Loved this video so much!! So cosy, comforting and interesting xx
I'd have watched 2hrs of this content Melanie. Such a cosy, interesting, honest vlog.
Your videos are my favourite. I watch them during my 8 month old's nap ☕ Commenting for the algorithm ;)
Yours dads places colours are gonna look gorgeous 🎉
these videos always make me really excited to have my own place of some kind sometime. and I know renovating can be so stressful and exhausting but you focus more on the nice aspects like getting to make everything exactly how you want it and being playful with it all. :)
I love how you show the realistic sides of family life and renovating, its very refreshing to watch ❤
Yayyy! A Melanie video:) Always a heartwarming experience
Love your content lately, so inspiring!
😊 thanks for the video. Take as much time as you need, we will wait 😊
Commenting for engagement - about to embark on my own Reno journey and appreciate your honesty
My mum has been visiting me in LA. I’ve done more in a week than in the last six months since moving here!
wow so impressed with everything you get done, literally in awe. Absolutely love following your journey xx
Adore your dynamic with your family. So loving and wholesome.
So happy for you and your Dad you are such lovely people ❤🌺🥰
Always so happy to see a new video from you, Mel 🥰 (loooong time viewer not commenter!!). Excited to snuggle up with a cuppa and some biscuits and watch this tomorrow 💚💚💚 sending big loves to you and yours!! xxx
That shed is going to be adorable, can't wait to see it done!
I love this, daughter goals 💗
Love your vlogs! I'm usually a silent watcher, but I know a little help with the algorithm can go a long way :)
I loved this video, so nice hearing the conversation with your dad
