    I think this game would've benefited better if it were just developed as a regular game for consoles and PC. The VR gimmick really holds the game's visuals back, and I know that because the CryEngine is a _phenomenal_ piece of developmental technology.

      ***** Looks like you're in the minority there. You're acting like I said the game looks like ass, and I didn't. I said it would look BETTER if it were just a simple traditionally-developed game. And for the record, I _did_ get a good look at it in person, and it's still meh compared to what the CryEngine 5 can really do. Calm yourself.

    So I was excited for this game but turns out it's not that great especially when it comes to the controls and visuals. My eyes were straining like hell trying to make out the backgrounds I went and got the pro it kinda helped with the visuals but overall this isn't that good

    I don't get why these VR games don't do the rest of the arms.
    It may block ur vision, sure.
    But like, you're still seeing floating hands.
    Maybe since this is a scifi-themed game, why not render the rest of the arm, but have an X-ray effect that can look through it somewhat. It's like one of your visor functions or something.

    • @ihatevoyager
      @ihatevoyager 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i know man, it's odd and makes the game less immersive

    • @TommysSketches
      @TommysSketches 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Staker
      Arms in VR games can cause motion sickness.
      At the point shown in this video where the protagonist is climbing bars is a good example.
      If the arms were shown dangling above you, holding onto the bars when in real life your arms aren't doing that, can confuse your brain and cause even more motion sickness than this game supposedly already has.

    • @ihatevoyager
      @ihatevoyager 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i played loading human with arms and it didn't make me sick. looked much more natural than a pair of floating hands.Foxy's Sketches

    • @TommysSketches
      @TommysSketches 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ihatevoyager
      I see your point but in most cases it can cause nausea or confuse your brain.
      Take adrift for example. Whenever reaching for an item an arm would reach out to seize it. Many people found this uncomfortable as it was not their hand they saw on screen. Most people can find it uncomfortable and certain developers have not mastered it yet.
      I guess loading human did. But in games like Robinson where you have to climb bars or ladders. Imagine your arms reaching up when in real life they're not? In certain instances like that there's a problem.
      Either way, arm or hand, ridiculous or not, it doesn't break immersion. An arm would be more likely to break immersion than a floating hand.

    This is why I haven't even considered VR. I know this about the experience, but at the same time it's still is and always will be about the games. It seems most of the games that have been released for it are short and just show off what the VR is about. But until it starts releasing some big name titles it's not gonna get the attention of many gamers.

    • @ACGreviews
      @ACGreviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      agreed

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with that. But to me this is what's exciting about VR as a platform. Right now it's in its infancy, and people should be understanding of this and take that into consideration whenever forming any kind of opinion on it. It' annoys me when you just get people blurting out shite like "Oh, its just a gimmick" and "VR has failed". Why is that, exactly? It's my experience that people coming out with bullshit like that just haven't experienced it yet, and that's the thing: it's an experience. You have to see it for yourself to get what its all about. It's no gimmick, and right now developers are figuring out what works and what doesn't. It has so much potential, more so than your standard console and TV, which if you haven't noticed lately, is becoming a bit of a bore with the countless remakes and remasters. There's fuck all new. Just higher def visuals and more microtransactions.

    • @ACGreviews
      @ACGreviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of those that I have demod with only about 30% DONT state its a gimmick. It has a huge potential later. Current hardware is showing its weaknesses right now and folks notice it even without prior experience.

    That RIGS game uses the dualshock. And there has been no significant claims of sickness. I wish they would use it more often, or switch back and forth. You walk with the dualshock, come up to an enemy, and pull out your sword (move controller.) It would take you leaving the move controller on your lap or around your wrist like a Wii controller, but I bet that'd take care of alot of the sickness.

    Damn, this is one of the titles I was most excited for with PSVR. I'm also really excited for The Assembly. The controls in that seem like they may be less vomit-inducing. They have a teleport option and when you turn in increments it does a cut instead of a quick pan like Robinson does.

    I haven't tried PSVR yet but it just seems the floating hands in games would break the immersion for me, which is what VR is all about.

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So you haven't tried it, yet you think that would break the immersion?
      I'll give you some advice: TRY IT. You can't get any sense of what the immersion is like until you do, and this is something that I'm constantly relaying to people who complain about these things without experiencing it first hand.

    • @TommysSketches
      @TommysSketches 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Angelo bladiebla
      Bad move controllers? Yes they don't have good tracking compared to vive but breaking you from the immersion?
      They only added to the immersion for me. And the tracking is decent. You just notice a slight shake in your hands from time to time and although that's weird it's by far from immersion breaking and can quite easily be fixed in a software update.

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Foxy's Sketches Exactly right. It's not perfect, but the goal for any VR is presence and immersion, and the PSVR does that job in a manner that is comparable to anything else out there. The other complaint about resolution is also a strange one. Sure, it could be better. It can always be better regardless of whether you are playing on a 4k TV or a VR headset, the fact is, even on the likes of the Vive, the resolution isn't as pin sharp as we'd all like it, but that doesn't matter. It baffles me how anyone can say that the PSVR isn't amazing. As someone who grew up from the NES era, having incredible technology that actually puts you inside a game that looks as good as it does and makes you believe you are there, is like something from science fiction, only it isn't. It's what we've got today. Some people will never be happy no matter how good something is.

    • @TommysSketches
      @TommysSketches 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Larry Langer
      I one hundred percent agree. And for people who are solely console players this VR headset is revolutionary to them as it's a cheaper more accessible way to game in VR. And resolution isn't bad at all and again, if you are solely a console player you're not gonna notice the resolution or tracking.
      I really don't think people who haven't gone near VR have a valid opinion on whether it's bad or good.
      People constantly complain about lack of arms (which is on purpose to reduce motion sickness) and lack of 360 movement is enough to take you out of immersion and that is simply not true. It's amazing and it's so sad that you can't explain what it's like to people who haven't tried it.

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Foxy's Sketches Yep. I've owned everything at one stage or another. From the old 8-bit systems, to my PC. What VR does for me now is something new, something refreshing, and something that I only imagined when I was a kid. It delivered, and more, and it's rare that a product does that. For me, this has the same potential leap that 3d polygon games had in the industry jumping from bitmap pixels. If VR isn't given the chance by people, we'll never see the next big evolution from the industry. Sooner or later, the standard controller and TV has to become obsolete. Time to embrace that. After experiencing PSVR for a extended period, going back to a standard game on a TV just felt redundant. Also, the complaints about hads being disembodied is a lack of knowledge and understanding from people who just don't understand how tracking has to work, and what it takes to properly emulate your movement 1-2-1 on joints on a mesh anything below the wrist. It would just look too strange and unnatural.

  • @aresa8948
    @aresa8948 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are the controls like the "free mode" in Tomb Raider: Blood Ties VR, where you can explore Lara's Mansion? I have to admit, playing a vr game like a "regular" game with the two joysticks was a bit werid at the beginning, but after 10 mins or so, I was used to it. I don't understand why they don't use RIGS mechanism for suck slow paced games, where you simply turn in the direction you're looking at. I think that would alleviate the problem for many people .

    The only thing that realy bothers me are the controls. I was sitting ready with my move controllers and it doesn't even support it... Immersion would be so much better. Why not press a button to walk. Or use a teleport system. Just feels odd to control your right hand with your head.

    Playing this game standing up and even moving my feet as I moved forward worked wonders for the nausea issue (even though I probably looked like an idiot doing that).
    As for the game itself - Dude is right. This was a complete letdown especially after watching the phenomenal game trailer. It's excruciatingly boring and cumbersome.
    VR developers need to take example from the much more superior Batman Arkham VR game.

      VR in concept has existed since the 1960's -70's. It is possible to have awesome VR experiences but no studio will do so when the majority of masses do not adopt this model. Every game company has a vision to deliver a great game in traditional console format. However incorporating VR into the experience will mean building assets for VR from the ground up which is a big risk. I am not stating that we won't have a great VR game in the future but I will hold off the optimism until a great developer envisions such a game from the ground up.

That being said, the price point is way too steep for the length so I will definitely wait for a sale. It's a shame since I was actually, really looking forward to this game.

    Sony them self needs to lead the way here and to develope those killer apps to increase the market for PSVR. No way a 3rd party developer studio will take the cost to make those triple A VR games at this point in time. Im sure Sony are working on it though and we will most likely see some high budget VR games within the next 6 months or so.
    Btw great review as allways!

    Very helpful. Was looking forward to this, now it's a miss. There really is no excuse for poor rendering and motion sickness. I tried Rigs ready to tear the headset off. But I loved it. It's fast. It's smooth. I appreciate movement in VR is tricky but it should be a case of 'works well' or 'not quite'. Not 'works well' or 'i think I'm going to puke for a week'.

    VR motion sickness is one of the reasons I'm not super excited for VR like a lot of tech people :( I don't want to have to take nausea medicine to play a game (as it stands I won't play first person games on PC if the fov is too narrow). Gabe from Penny Arcade takes Dramamine to be able to play VR games for more than 15 minutes.

      Some people can get used to it. Your brain has to learn disassociation but I've never had an issue though that weird feeling when moving with the right stick as I'm standing still, I got used to that after a few hours. I'm terrified of heights too but that went away pretty quick in VR at least, not so much the real world but guess it shows VR isn't going to help with phobias.

    I think vr is trying to hard with these big titles, just keep it simple with games like batman vr, and keep games £10 or £15 , it's all about the experience, Brookhaven is great, no sickness at all in these games, just hope the developers listen to us, and build games around this.

    i completed the game and i agree with most of the review, exept for the motion sickness. I played with the smooth settings and had no problem at all. maybe its just me, in that case im glad i dont suffer sickness for these types of game. if you experience MS, Windland is going to test it to the limit, as even i got the vertigo when playing at hi momentum, free look mode.

    Unfortunately I didn't saw this video one day earlier. I bought this game one day ago and played it today.
    The intro was great, where the little T-Rex popped out of the egg. But as soon I got in the Spaceship and moved a little bit, I got sick. And yeah, the "smooth" option or what it's called is terrible...
    I really hope not every VR game will give me that much motion sickness, because so far I like the VR experience from what I've seen in few other games that I downloaded.

    Great vid, exactly on point..
    If games are largely naff these days how is vr gonna make things better especially on struggling consoles, i simply have to go pc now, the PSmove controllers were a real bad choice. All i want is 1080p 60fps solid. And the pro cant guarantee that. Back to freflyVR 4 me, its 60bucks, has 25degrees more FOV, can stream wifi or wired any PC game in vr, plus it can use my 4k phone.

    Now seeig this, I'm glad i held off on buying this game.
    I think the worst thing imo is the unnatural lighting effects and the other thing that kind of ruined it for me was, I was kind of expecting more alien looking dinosaurs, but they're just normal looking dinosaurs.
    Of course I'm sure it looks a hundred times better in VR and your mind will probably just except how it looks while you're playing it.
    Also, this is a $40 game? Where? I've only ever seen this for $60

    I ain't paying £50 for a 'VR' game that doesn't even support the move controllers?! are the developers that lazy to spend some extra time to add Move support? or does moving your hand with the VR headset make it feel more realistic? (like a deformed guy with a hand stuck to his head).. Thank god Brookhaven was released around the same time for only £15 and has great move controls.. Was really looking forwards to this game but thanks for the review I think this is one of those hyped games

    Quick question man, how do you get to play these games early for reviews? Not implying any impropriety on your part, just wondering. I didn't know they gave certain TH-camrs streamers early access to some titles. Do you have to apply to review these games or something? Merely curious how the process works.

    • @joeportes834
      @joeportes834 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know you weren't asking me, but I write for some relatively small sites and we get lots of review copies -- unsolicited and ones we ask for. ACG is pretty big, so I wouldn't be surprised if most companies reach out to him with review codes. There are many resources for reviewers and even more email lists to join, so there's a number of ways to get codes for reviewing games... if you have a decent TH-cam following or write for a credible site.
