  • Defensive firefighting barriers are a form of firefighting in which the spread of the fire to a close-by, not yet burning area is to be prevented. There are different ways to build up such a defensive firefighting barrier.
The use of handlines and nozzles is one possibility with which fire departments can set up a barrier and prevent the fire from spreading. In the case of forest fires or other vegetation fires a defensive firefighting barrier often has to be set up over a length of several hundred meters. This is where a major disadvantage of a barrier using nozzles becomes apparent: It requires a very high number of staff. Many firefighters are bound in long term at the defensive barrier and may be missing elsewhere.
In order to reduce the number of firefighting staff needed at a defensive firefighting barrier, impact sprinklers are often used. This is especially the case in forest fires. This ejection devices work largely self-sufficiently. Impact sprinklers only have to be checked regularly for proper functioning which can be done by a few firefighters. But there is a decisive disadvantage, too: because impact sprinklers are operated with water in the vast majority of operations, water consumption is extremely high. Especially in the case of a forest fire in remote regions, water is not available and must be brought in via long hose lines or by tankers.
Setting up a defensive firefighting barrier with One Seven compressed air foam
Schmitz One Seven, as a specialist for compressed air foam, has a solution ready: Standard impact sprinklers of fire departments can be operated with One Seven compressed air foam.
Detailed information on compressed air foam from Schmitz One Seven can be found here: www.oneseven.c...
Compressed air foam from One Seven is a highly effective extinguishing agent which is produced with low water consumption. It is superior to water as an extinguishing agent due to its adhesive properties, long foam durability and great penetration power. One Seven compressed air foam adheres to the fire material or to materials to be protected (in a forest fire on grasses, on dead wood and on trees). Here the compressed air foam ensures long-term penetration due to its adhesive properties. Due to the long durability of One Seven compressed air foam the soil is wetted particularly intensively. This prevents the spread of fire via smoldering fires in the forest floor. In addition compressed air foam does not run off surficially like water but works as an extinguishing agent exactly where it is applied.
This video shows the setup of a defensive sprinkler barrier by means of impact sprinklers which are supplied with One Seven compressed air foam. You will also get information about the throwing distance with One Seven compressed air foam, durability time and water consumption.
