Cutting Off The Lid | The Toolbox Project #11

In this video, we’ll be carrying out quite possibly the scariest part of the entire project, separating the lid. This stage requires a lot of prep and is also a great time to focus on sanding and filling gaps around the box. Good luck!

I learned something again. The mushrooming of the gap in the dove tail was brilliant. I could have used that last week on a through wedged tenon. Thanks! On the lid after you separate the lid from the box. I find it best to plan flat than use a large sanding plate to mate the two surfaces.

A good quality bits for the router is a game changer!!! They do not come cheap so maybe buy one for a designated project. Modified the speed on the router to the bit and move not too fast and not too slow. Matt thanks for everything you and Rob are great people!!!

I used the router method Matt shows in this video but wish I’d used my table saw instead. I found that the style of router I have (Erbauer er2100) doesn’t lend itself to the job as it has the deadman style power switch. This meant I couldn’t use the technique of moving the pressure on the fence to prevent the tool from twisting and sniping the cut. I ended up having to plane about 2mm from the lid and box to correct this. Using my table saw would have been quicker and more accurate. That said, I’m learning a great deal from this project and really enjoy Matt’s style of teaching.

Those winding sticks look a bit like a floor transition strip, I think aluminum tile edges from the home center would work good.

I wonder if using your plough plane with the kerfing saw wouldn't be less stressful than using the big router (even though you nailed it, I liked the attention to the fence pressure throughout the cut).

Would a Band Saw be a bad option for cutting the top off? I would think it would work well.

I always thought that when cutting the lid that it's done on a bandsaw? Why did you not opt for that option. Sorry if I'm been ignorant and there is a really simple reason why.

My question is "Why did you have to cut a 6mm groove if you were intending to use a Japanese pull saw for the final separation"? The kerf of this saw is only about .012" or near 3 mil. Just curious.

I suppose that he had to do it that way in order to have the final width of that tail match the width of the others. He made the big tail 6mm wider than the rest.
