  • In this video, I'll show you how to cut the mitres for the box carcass. This step involves the creation of a mitre jig which can be created both by hand and by machine. But the accuracy in which you make this will dictate the outcome of your joints. So be sure to take care with it.
Most importantly, do not dry assemble the box with the lid and base fitted at the same time. You will not be able to get it apart. Instead, test them one at a time!
As always, if you need more information on this stage or would like to know how to do this by hand, take a look at the supporting resources below.

WHAT IS THE FREE ONLINE WOODWORKING SCHOOL?
When designing the online course, Matt wanted to make it as close as possible to his own experience learning at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford. Primarily, by providing a structured course that anyone can follow, without having to find their own way through an arbitrary list of videos on TH-cam.

Great presentation, Matt. I really appreciate the close ups and that you're not afraid to display (and admit to) your mistakes.

That tip about not fitting the base and top at the same time is a great call….. definitely something I would overlook and do 😂

Somehow I unexpectedly found you on TH-cam. Classically, videos on carpentry work are a demonstration of technological operations. And your videos are different in that they show how to think before performing technological operations. This is very valuable. Thank you!

Matt, when sawing off the mitres and catching the tail with the saw. Try a thin sacrificial sliver of wood in the gap balanced on the tail. Takes the impact of the saw and prevents hitting the tail. Cheers

Matt, Can I suggest that making/using a miter pairing jig would make a fabulously popular general video for the ME at-large channel? There is almoast nothing like this specific video, let alone one that addresses making the ‘tool’ or using the ‘tool’ used in pairing the miter. There are more applications than just the mitered dovetail as you know and the concept, principles, and use actually go far to building handwork skill. Just an idea where you are imminently positioned and probably the most winsome & communicative teacher to take this on. There’s a vacuum on this topic, I’d love to see you fill it. I and my family continue to keep you in our prayers.
