It’s completely understandable. I felt the same way. Kubo literally baited us into thinking that Shunsui was going to be the next one to die by Lille. I loved the episode for 3 reasons: I’m glad that Lille didn’t sniped down Soi Fon cause it looked like he was aiming for her next, Shunsui’s Bankai and the color of Lille’s Quincy Vollstandig being green (which is one of my top 5 favorite colors)
This episode only proves to me that I was right in choosing Shunsui as my favorite character. And his Bankai is a perfect representation of his personality: hyper-pragmatism wrapped in childishness. I have always loved how Shunsui and Katen's relationship is that of an old married couple. I wish all Zanpakutō spirits appeared when a Bankai is activated like this.
Explaining this Bankai would take as long as a novel, so I will try to be brief. Katen Kyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju. (Under a dead pine tree, a lover's suicide.) The original story of this Bankai is a Rakugo story, and it is considered that the story may have been based on a lovers' suicide set in a brothel. I have researched and found that the rakugo story is similar to “Shinagawa Shinju”. -Act 1 Tameraikizu No Wakachiai (The sharing Hesitation scars) A man and a woman are lovers. However, the man hurts the woman. -Act 2 Zanki no shito ne.(He is sick on the floor with a sense of responsibility.) The man also falls ill from regret over having hurt the woman so deeply. -Act 3 Dangyo No Fuchi (They both throw themselves into the water and sink to the bottom) The two are so distressed that they consider committing suicide by drowning in water. But the man becomes afraid. The woman had already made up her mind. -Final Act Itokiribasami Chizome No Nodobue (Thread-cutting scissors cut the whistle and stain it with blood) She cut the man's throat with a pair of string scissors.
Some interesting spoiler-free facts about this episode: - Shunsui's shikai turns children plays into reality, while his bankai does the same but with adult plays - Ohana was first teased in a filler arc, but the author Tite Kubo loved the design so much he decided to include it in a later, canon, arc which is this one! - The bankai represents traditional JP stage acting through acts and in this scenario specifically it's a play about a suicide murder of a couple (two actors only) - His bankai forces everyone in a specific area to participate, no matter if they want to or not. Here, everyone dodged the bullet although Shunsui wasn't sure about Nanao, thus why he said "I'm sorry if you get dragged into this", meaning she got lucky Ohana didn't include her in the play. Ohana kind of works like a lead director and Shunsui is the one who tells the story.
the zanpakuto spirit design was always canon and was already officially designed by kubo but the zanpakuto rebellion arc is not written by him unfortunatally
I knew the hand would be back as it did with Szayelaporro and I'm happy to see Captain Kyoraku's ZanpakutoThe Beautiful Katen She playing so harshly that she almost hurts his eye and I hope the Silent Kyokotsu shows up she is deadly Of course anyone who hasn't seen the Zanpakuto arc wouldn't know them
In Cour 2 we saw a flash back of Osho and Yhwach speaking about the world, Yhwach activates the Almighty opens and grabs Osho which is the first time we see Pernida eyes in Oshos' hand. After the exchange Osho says something along " Don't think you can take the soul kings arm for free, your eyes will now be forever closed".
