Your expectations have been built up that this is just pre-rendered images and your only danger is the jumpscare at the end. So when you’re routinely checking in the hallway and suddenly, one of them is making a beeline for you, it’s genuinely surprising and causes you to react. I think the end bit is weak by itself, but I don’t think there’s many “oh shit” moments like that in the franchise.
its things like that that make the horror of fnaf work imo. the anticipation and stress behind it is so much more scary than any jumpscare. and the few times it strays from its own formula unexpectedly can be genuinely shocking. the most scared i've been in a fnaf game was pizzeria sim, i was playing for some achievement and was skipping the scrap. up until that point the game had told me that they only get in because you let them in. so i felt safe, only to quickly shit myself upon learning that they can get in anyway. its just moments like that that work so well and wish more games realised that instead of just defaulting to jumpscares
I can say with absolute certainty- the first time I saw the foxy jumpscare I legitimately screamed. I watch it now and I’m kinda like “I don’t know why I got so scared, but I KNOW it scared the shit outta me”
@@sophiadebar382 same- i think it's like the 1st commenter said. it's the shock of it, bc so far you haven't actually seen any of them move on the cams and then suddenly, foxy does and it causes a brief short circuit.
I think part of the reason Ruin's jumpscares are so good is because you can see Cassie trying and failing to fight back. It feels like you could just walk away for most other jump scares in the series, but in Ruin you know there's nothing you can do once they catch you.
It's why Mangle's original scare was one of the actual best in the series. Because the positioning and movement makes it seem like he is actually moving within the environment, and in context it makes it much more clear that she is actively trying to kill you. Especially since if you're leaning in while actually playing, it gets some split depth effect and pops. Also same reason (scrapping) Lefty is so much better. She actually looks like she's jumping over the table to come at you. The Nightmares tried the same thing by picking you up, but since you're mostly just floating in front of their teeth the effect doesn't work as well. Also, why Mangle wins of those, since you get more context since you can see behind them well enough.
For real. I was hoping VR would have a jumpscare where they actually just eat you for the same reason. It doesn’t feel dangerous watching an animatronic shove their mouth in your face like they’re begging for your spit.
@@theduke3778 I think there’s always a place for baby’s first horror game. So many people need to dip their feet before jumping into the deep end. I’m pretty mixed on the series, but I can’t argue it raised a whole generation of people who love horror and are going to go on to cook up things far scarier than these! Besides, as an old fart myself I can’t say the amnesia dark descent mods that I dipped my feet in the pool with were much better.
@@m0n5a80that’s a D at best by comparison. It is a punch, but it’s more of ‘stun you for a second for a follow up’ punch than it is a ‘punch you with enough force to summon a black hole’ punch
i always liked nightmare's jumpscare, just because instead of it relying completely on surprise and whatnot, it's deeply unsettling the first time. you're used to sudden loud jumpscares with like a roar, then you get the creepy noise while he stares into your soul
@@piratesparrow yeah this one disturbed me, I’m at the point where most horror doesn’t phase me but it awakened some primal fear of being stared at in the darkness
I think the reason why the scrap jumpscares are better than the night ones in pizzeria simulator is because the characters look like they're actually jumping over the table to kill you which makes it look realistic. In the night jump scares they just appear out of nowhere so it looks weirder. As well as this, you can't really see the background in the scrap sections so if the background does shake, you can't see it but obviously the opposite happens during the night shift and it's just really awkward.
It’s funny how Scott didn’t understand why people thought they were so bad, because when he updated them, he just added more animation frames, improved the textures on the models, and added half baked screen-shake.
I think the office itself contributes to why the main PizzaSim jumpscares are such an L. It's such a tight space that there's no believable way for the animatronics to get their entire body out of the vent and still have space to approach you, which really highlights the flatness. In the salvage jumpscares, each of the animatronics are already integrated in the space, and when you combine that with the better atmosphere and tension of the salvage sections, it elevates the jumspscares even though they're not substantively different from the office section jumpscares animation or sound-wise. If I were to fix them, I would either make it so that your camera is forced to the side of the room with the vent and the animatronic attacks you from the vent, or I'd redesign the office.
The funny part about the salvage jumpscares is that if you actually pay attention to the whole thing you can see that they don't actually lunge over the table, the camera just zooms in on them while they somewhat lean over it and the table disappears from view after the zoom giving the illusion of going over the desk. All this to say despite that amusing detail, the salvage jumpscares are better than the office jumpscares regardless.
The ignited bonnie one works so well because it really leans into the weight and power of these metal machines, which most don't. The dull thud and sickening crunch of bone is brilliant sound design
Nightmare got done dirty. That first time you see it and get hit with the glitchy audio it sticks in your brain, I feel like everyone got hung up on the "It's PNG so it's F" forgetting what it's like to actually experience in game (if indeed they even played it)
Everyone liked golden Freddy’s jumpscare despite it being a PNG. I don’t see why nightmares was so disliked despite having the same, if not better, execution as golden Freddy.
@@tacotaco288 Length. Nightmare suffered from how long it lingered. Like how half of Pizza Sim's woulda been fine if they didn't stop after half a frame and just stare at you long enough to listen to a Mr. Hippo rant before the screen actually goes red.
@jasminemeek03 i disagree with everything except frequency, its true that unfortunately the fact that you see it a lot takes it from creepy to "ugh i lost again"
Ruin's jumpscares really surprised me. they are long enough to actually show the animatronics doing something and you actually see your character try to fight back. Due to the longer jumpscares the fakeouts work really well because you can't directly tell if you died or not.
Ignited Toilet Bonny has superb form. He reals back his punch far and then slams his fist into your body with a perfect straight arm. No doubt that it’s enough force to kill a man, especially since a robot is doing the punching. It happens so fast too, there’s no getting out of the way. But then you have TGA Toy Chica’s pathetic punch. Terrible form. She doesn’t reel her forearm back, elbow bent to store energy, but instead just halfasses it. The only saving grace in her form is the straight forearm when she punches forward straight into your face. And the only reason it is lethal is because she’s a robot and it’s hitting your nose ridge, but otherwise it is so slow you could dodge it.
id say Baby's first appearance in HW2 would be a SSS moment for me personally. Like her just slowly walking towards the office and her offering an ice cream, especially when we know the context to what has happened before when she did that. It's all just so eerry and unnerving.
Spiff did the Ruin Endo Jumpscare SO dirty. Like how can you say it's not terrifying to grab a child by the head and smash her against the endo's face, PLUS Cassie trying her best to grab onto it's arm is SUCH a good detail
i will say, i actually like that eclipse doesn't kill you unless you walk into him. it's a mix of sun and moon, and sun never wants to kill you. it makes sense to me that since it's a mix, sun might be able to stop moon from hunting, but not from attacking once directly given an oppertunity.
@@Pretty-Boy-Spencer not really, it's Fnaf, the point is that the animatronics want you dead for some reason. As long as they showed some reluctance from Sun's side, it would work just fine
The nightmares getting F tier is criminal. I've always interpreted their jumpscare to be something so horrific in the child's mind that it's almost like it stopped. The final thing that child saw before they died was its face, and that last image is plastered all over his mind. I'd say S tier. When you think about it in a contextual sense, giving them an animation would've ruined that suspense. It was a great decision making it a freeze frame with the garbled audio.
9:25 Have to disagree with the Puppet here, mostly because of your own criteria. You said that the jumpscares would be ranked off of what you assumed it would feel like to see them for the FIRST time. It's very unlikely that a first-time player would even know what the hell is happening when the music box goes off, I know *I* sure didn't. It's the most suspenseful and nerve-wracking thing a new player can experience in that game. The Puppet was the scariest jumpsacre by FAR when I first started playing FNaF 2. As a veteran player, you have the benefit of hindsight that makes the Puppet a lot less scary, but that means you've forgotten what it's liked to get attacked by them for the first time.
As I was watching I was like "damn, I wanna rank these too" AND THEN I LOOKED IN THE DESCRIPTION, THE LINK TO THE TIERLIST?? THE LINK TO THE VIDEO?? THE LINK TO THE PICS?! Spiff knows what's up thank you for adding those man 🙏
another one that i think could absolutely either be a cool moment or possibly go in SSS that was never even mentioned was the SL Scoop, it can be seen coming but I think it might fall over into SSS because it would be an actual POV death
4:17 Well hang on now Spigghetti, the first time you get the Foxy jumpscare is usually the scariest one until you see Freddy's lights out, because before, they just appeared, but now you have Foxy fuckin _BOOKIN IT_ to get you
it's good until he actually gets in the office. like you are told to keep an eye on him and then he is gone, you frantically search for him in the cameras and then you see him actually fucking running and you have to relatively quickly closer the cams and shut the door after which you hear him banging it, giving him even more life. then if you fail to shut the door he just peeks out. imagine if he actually ran into the office and leaped at you.
Oh shit really? Mb, I just found it whilst scrolling through google in the early hours of the morning 😅 I can only apologise. I can ask Spiff to put your @ in the description as credit if you'd like
I feel like Phantom Puppet from FNAF3 is so underrated. Catching it on the cams when you hadn’t seen it the entire rest of the game, and then getting a grating noise with a face following you around is pretty freaky the first time
Some years ago I realised that the Fnaf 2 jumpscare and the meme "what are thoooose" have the same length and tempo so I can't unhear this. And now you can't as well
Hear me out: Rockstar Foxy UCN Should get a bump simply because of the first jumpscare, pressing the parrot and getting hit with the "you win some, you lose some" was terrifying for me the first time and having it be a helping thing which kills you was very spooky the first time, so it should be increased due to context IMO
The triple plush baby jumpscare happens when you keep the closet closed for too long during the Circus Baby mini game, not during the actual Plushbaby minigame
I can't be the only one that finds Springtraps jumpscares underrated. That kind of slower and less hectic jumpscares fits him way more than just jumping at your face like a rabid dog.
ngl the broken security breach bot in the basement is scarier to me than it probably should be because you don't necessarily know that it wont be able to call anyone in and the way it looks just makes me think "ewewew don't come near me" and in a way the fact that it tries to call someone in but it cant makes it more unsettling in itself because of how much disrepair it is in, idk its hard to explain
I feel like in 2, Golden Freddy was actually scarier before the jumpscare, when he's a barely visible ominous presence in the hall, then the jumpscare happens and he's just goofy lol.
nightmarionne should be in A: it always gets me, also its just a nightmare puppet but it evolved. its a still png yes, same angle as nightmare yes, but its iconic! still pngs are scary because you never know whats gonna happen! it deserves the special part.
@@tacotaco288 ok i didn't know that, but that i can totally seeing that being the case. That coupled with the fact that the game is from a child's perspective...... oh yeesh. wtf did afton do to this poor kid... omg...
Plus Nightmare's jumpscare sounds has what seem to be distorted sirens in it. Like an ambulance after the bite for instance? Also Nightmarionne, has all the same as Nightmare plus if you brighten the image it has big bloodshot eyes. Both are top tier imo.
I have never ever seen a twitch chat with worse general opinion, after seeing this chat I feel the same way an alien would feel after knowing humans still kill each other because of territory
I honestly think nightmarionne’s jumpscare is at least an s, the first time you aren’t expecting it and it’s eerie because it’s not like the other ones, and the blank creepy stare…if you brighten up the image, there are realistic eyes too
bro, the disrespect for nightmare's jumpscare in fnaf 4 though. its so fucking good, easily the creepiest of the entire franchise for me. sure, face value, it's just a literal still png, but then you realize that what you're seeing is the final moments of a child as he's getting his head chewed through. no "light at the end of the tunnel", no peaceful ending. just the whine of malfunctioning electronics and a giant, monstrous bear's dead-eyed stare. it's fucking terrifying. why does nobody give any respect to it?
Yeah same thoughts here really If Golden Freddy from FNAF1 can qualify as SSS tier, then Nightmare and Nightmarionne from FNAF 4 should not belong in F Golden is iconic of course, so it give them more points than the FNAF 4 ones, but I still think it should go like GF - SSS Nightmare - S Nightmarionne - A Because they're all unique, all quite scary in the context, and the distinction on which one is "better" is purely based on the iconic nature of them, which both GF and Nightmare qualify [with GF having a slight lead] Nightmarionne isn't as iconic but its easily the most unique jumpscare in FNAF 4 in my opinion
Yeah that was my only gripe/actual shock to see everyone’s general consensus. Didn’t feel right to have both nightmares ranked so terribly for the justifications of them being strictly PNGs when Golden Freddy is placed so high but still a still image The context building around the moment is such a crucial point to what makes the scares so good. Taking away from that will of course leave them with less of an impression. Just didn’t feel fair that everything about the context/buildup was disregarded while Golden Freddy got the scapegoat treatment (Justified but a shame the nightmares weren’t viewed the same)
I think Nightmare is hit by hindsight. When Nightmare was one of two jumpscares (along with G. Freddy) that were just a close up image? With a unique jumpscare sound, as a character coming out of nowhere entirely, Nightmare is a shoe in for at minimum an A rank to me when you're adding in context and history. Then, y'know, 6 rolled around and UCN with their PNG scares that made Nightmare less unique in that regard.
Nightmarionne in F tier is insane It's my favorite jumpscare of the whole series Mostly because of, as spiff said, everything surrounding it It's late in the game, you've gone through all the other LOUD AS FUCK jumpscares, and then, this fuckass wide smile shoves itself in your face, doesn't even look at you, and just STAYS THERE. This is the worst one to *experience* out of all of them in FNAF 4. Unlike Nightmare, you have no idea what this thing is gonna do to you.
idk why but the nightmare and nightmarrionne jumpscares are so much scarier than any of the other ones, just the sound they make gives me chills its so terrifying for some reason lol
Personally, I think if we're taking the first-time experience of each jumpscare into account, I think FNAF 2 Puppet should be higher. The stress of suddenly hearing the changed music and not knowing what's going on, knowing that SOMETHING bad is about to happen but not knowing what (BC You don't see puppet until they jumpscare you AFAIK) and then suddenly getting hit is really good.
I started watching the VOD bcuz I didn't think he'd make it into a video, seems like long form content. What a nice surprise. Also The Nightmare from FNAF 4 is SSS and UCN Nightmarionne has the best and iconic voice lines ever
the one from Security Breach thats missing is when you fail putting Freddy's head back on. its hilarious, but obviously the only way you'll see it is if you fail on purpose
I think Rockstar Foxy deserves higher, just because of the impact of his jumpscare on first time players. When you're starting out, Rockstar Foxy is just a friend. You click his bird, and he does something small but helpful for you. You get used to just clicking on the bird when you see it. But then, at some point during a run like any other, _ye win some, ye lose some._ And the jumpscare comes out of nowhere, and you realize that yes, this character _is_ a threat, he just hadn't shown his fangs yet. I'd put it in A because it changes how you look at the character forever.
I remember when the VOD came out yesterday and I was like "yipeee!" until i realized it was like 4 hours long. So thabk you for making a video and editing it down :)
Fun fact about pizza sim's office jumpscares, that freeze on the last frame of the jumpscare is to some extent a glitch. The video files are far shorter than they actually show up in game. I don't know the full details about it, but it's interesting.
Well the thing is that the game doesn’t end when the animation does like pretty much every other game- it has to wait 1.25 seconds before cutting to the game over screen. And since the jumpscares are only 30 frames long, that’s nearly a full second waiting on the last frame. Seeing as how the salvage jumpscares also freeze on the last frame (with the red flash as emphasis) it’s just a weird stylistic choice he made with sixulator.
I was very sad joc Springtrap was not on this list. He had one of my favorite designs with pretty solid jump scares. The ending where he chokes you to death surrounded by flames was metal af.
@@icefoxy3460 are there like 3 different Joy of creation games or sumn. Like the original, Halloween edition, and reborn. I was never a huge fan of the series. I mean it’s cool but I’m not well educated on its development cycle or nothin.
I like how ruin actually has gassie struggle in the jumpscares, i give ruin points for that, as well as the unique animations. same with hw2 with the anims i guess i like how they actually do stuff other wiggling at you now
Man the disrespect to the Nightmare jumpscare from chat. You are correct Spiff, you truly had to be there because that jumpscare is a top five for me due to the significance and genuinely dark tone that one holds. That is death staring you in the face ready to take you away
Yeah as much as I didn't find Ruin scary, I have to say that its jumpscares are pretty good solely because of the fact you see Cassie's model in some of them, reminds you that a child is being literally murdered, really elevates the feel of them
definitely would put nightmare in sss, you have to consider all the context surrounding him like you did with everyone else. you dont expect him to be there in the first place and he honestly looks quite horrific, not to mention hes definitely iconic. anyway great vid as always!
Fun context about toreader march!! It's a song about victory from french opera and so with that context it feels mocking you. I love the power outage freddy jumpscare for so many reasons, it also has such a great feeling of helplessness it evokes as well .
Security Breach Ruin Monty is the best actual jumpscare in the entire series. it shows your character struggle, before ultimately succumbing to the animatronic. SSSS for me. it is ABSOLUTELY my favorite jumpscare in the series.
I like the pop-up they did for some of the AR jumpscares, it actually feels robotic and puppetlike, but not in a way that detracts from the scare. Almost like a Jack-in-the-box, which can definitely be baby's first jumpscare to some people.
I feel like Nightmare and Nightmarionne are too low. Sure they don't move but neither does FNaF 1 Golden Freddy. I fewl like Nightmarionne's jumpscare is just so haunting and eerie.
The springtrap that spiff likes from AR is based off of one of the desolate hope bosses, a game I beat and actually loved every minute of! Was really nice seeing that reference
The scrap jumpscares in pizza sim being better than the night ones is probably because one the atmosphere is better, and two, the table. They have to actually get across the table to you, which forces them to at least be a little bit more dynamic.
I'm glad you mentioned factor is more for people who already order food every day, not really as much for people who already cook and do meal prep regularly
I like Nightmare's FNaF 4 jumpsscare. It's a nice homage to FNaF 1 Golden Freddy, snd even closes the game just like how Golden Freddy crashes it. It works well with his design too bevause you would expect something more like Nightmare Fredbears jumpscare but its more subdued in a menacing way without being disappointing because its also unique in this regard (besides the aforementioned Golden Freddy, and Nightmare's own Halloween reskin) Edit: Nightmarionne has a grest FNaF 4 jumpscare too. Brighten the image and you can see full bloodshot eyeballs in the sockets. It is terrifying.

The Nightmares tried the same thing by picking you up, but since you're mostly just floating in front of their teeth the effect doesn't work as well. Also, why Mangle wins of those, since you get more context since you can see behind them well enough.
It’d be better if the game was actually scary instead of “baby’s first horror game”

He used a premade template on tiermaker that had all of AR, but for the fan games he had to add those images himself.
Really good points being made here all around!
They should have forced the camera to look at the vent and make the jumpscare happen there like they are getting out of the vent

Everyone liked golden Freddy’s jumpscare despite it being a PNG. I don’t see why nightmares was so disliked despite having the same, if not better, execution as golden Freddy.
@@tacotaco288 Length. Nightmare suffered from how long it lingered.

@@tacotaco288 EXACTLY
Yeah, if spiff does an "event" ranking, that'll definitely be up high.

Real.
Spiff did the Ruin Endo Jumpscare SO dirty. Like how can you say it's not terrifying to grab a child by the head and smash her against the endo's face, PLUS Cassie trying her best to grab onto it's arm is SUCH a good detail
There was another one where you're lifted up by Roxy I think, thrown onto the ground and then bitten and he called it mid 😂
Prob bc he doesn't think they're scary in the actual gameplay so dying to them is less impactful
i will say, i actually like that eclipse doesn't kill you unless you walk into him. it's a mix of sun and moon, and sun never wants to kill you. it makes sense to me that since it's a mix, sun might be able to stop moon from hunting, but not from attacking once directly given an oppertunity.
It's nice as a story detail, but it still completely removes any feeling of tension in the area.
@@pyshrub well, i have a feeling that if it was the opposite, people would be complaining still.
@@Pretty-Boy-Spencer not really, it's Fnaf, the point is that the animatronics want you dead for some reason. As long as they showed some reluctance from Sun's side, it would work just fine
@@pyshrub my point was more so that people will always find something to complain about.

Mango and Puppet weren’t scary in all honesty

The Factor ad was the scariest jumpscare.
I feel like in 2, Golden Freddy was actually scarier before the jumpscare, when he's a barely visible ominous presence in the hall, then the jumpscare happens and he's just goofy lol.
nightmarionne should be in A: it always gets me, also its just a nightmare puppet but it evolved. its a still png yes, same angle as nightmare yes, but its iconic! still pngs are scary because you never know whats gonna happen! it deserves the special part.

bro, the disrespect for nightmare's jumpscare in fnaf 4 though. its so fucking good, easily the creepiest of the entire franchise for me. sure, face value, it's just a literal still png, but then you realize that what you're seeing is the final moments of a child as he's getting his head chewed through. no "light at the end of the tunnel", no peaceful ending. just the whine of malfunctioning electronics and a giant, monstrous bear's dead-eyed stare. it's fucking terrifying. why does nobody give any respect to it?
Yeah same thoughts here really
If Golden Freddy from FNAF1 can qualify as SSS tier, then Nightmare and Nightmarionne from FNAF 4 should not belong in F
Golden is iconic of course, so it give them more points than the FNAF 4 ones, but I still think it should go like
GF - SSS
Nightmare - S
Nightmarionne - A
Because they're all unique, all quite scary in the context, and the distinction on which one is "better" is purely based on the iconic nature of them, which both GF and Nightmare qualify [with GF having a slight lead]
Nightmarionne isn't as iconic but its easily the most unique jumpscare in FNAF 4 in my opinion
Yeah that was my only gripe/actual shock to see everyone’s general consensus.
Didn’t feel right to have both nightmares ranked so terribly for the justifications of them being strictly PNGs when Golden Freddy is placed so high but still a still image
The context building around the moment is such a crucial point to what makes the scares so good. Taking away from that will of course leave them with less of an impression.
Just didn’t feel fair that everything about the context/buildup was disregarded while Golden Freddy got the scapegoat treatment (Justified but a shame the nightmares weren’t viewed the same)
Agreed, it’s by far my favorite of the entire franchise. Was the only one to successfully scare me lol
I find the png to be slightly unsettling which is why it’s supposed to be scary. Idk tho

I have no idea how you guys got this so short (in comparison to the vod) while still including all of the jumpscares. MAD props dude.

Scott has told us that Bonnie has given him nightmares and, upon inspection, I think it really shows.
the one from Security Breach thats missing is when you fail putting Freddy's head back on.
its hilarious, but obviously the only way you'll see it is if you fail on purpose
Not sure if anyone noticed, but someone in chat during TJOC mentioned that Spiff accidentally swapped scrap baby's salvage and office jump scare.

The scrap jumpscares in pizza sim being better than the night ones is probably because one the atmosphere is better, and two, the table. They have to actually get across the table to you, which forces them to at least be a little bit more dynamic.
