Some Pearl Jam songs just seem like they are of a different time & place. This is one of them. Eddie's voice is just pure emotive sound. The lyrics are just a starting point.

Grunge was my era. It seemed like there was a pretty good variety in the “sound” of grunge, from hard tempo to soft. It wasn’t just one sound. But it was raw and emotional, and it had lyrics that made you think. It wasn’t about partying or getting laid.

Such an excellent song! Enjoyed this reaction. The best thing you could do is to go thru their 1st disc, "10" to start with. It's a 10 alright!

My understanding was that the guys were in the studio and started jamming, then Eddie came up with the words. Then they put it out on the B side of Jeremy. At first when asked about the lyrics he said "it has lyrics?" It is one of their closers, or end of the 1st set and Mike McCready really jams out. The band sometimes just sits down and listens with the crowd. You could really go down a rabbit hole with Pearl Jam. I enjoy their live versions more that studio, but that's just me. Betterman at Madison Square Garden in 2010 is definitely a sing-along.

The feeling of melancholy of this song gets me every time.
I was 10 when Ten came out andbit was the second CD i ever owned.
I've been a huge fan since.
The nebulous nature of the lyrics allows for the vibe of the song to be applied to so many memories...
    Leaving for college...
    A breakup...
    Losing a friend...
It geels like walking on a beach on a cloudy day thinking about whatever in life might be going on.
But theres a slight sense if hope in it as well?
    I don't wanna stay.
Embrace the feelings, but there's always another day.

I always say grunge is basically like blues and punk had a baby. Some of the core grunge groups have some metal thrown in too, but Pearl Jam is definitely the bluesiest of the bunch.

All their songs are great. 10 is perfect and imo the best first album ever. If you want power/grunge though .. Blood, Rearveiw Mirror, Evolution, and Porch are all great choices. If you want impactful then you have Jermy, Better Man, and W.M.A. If you want to hear them covering other peoples work there's Rockin In The Free World, Love Reign O'er Me, and Crazy Mary.

Grunge = raw emotion, not over produced, and the singers tended to use their voices as instruments also, complementing the band without overwhelming the background music

My favorite soul snatching song from them..from the paying homage to Jimi Hendrix with the guitar intro, to Eddie's emotional singing where it's pure emotion no need to understand the words bc the emotions hit u in the gut

That's what Grunge was. The artists are playing and singing what what they feel. They could care less what genre you categorized their music. Most "Grunge" bands hated being called Grunge or being singled out to a certain genre.

Sorry... late to the party on this one! Now, I'm only half-way through your reaction but seeing the way ur digging this already... I had to comment that you NEED to see this live!!💯 The energy Eddie puts out is infectious and as soon as the opening chord starts the crowd ALWAYS goes freaking nuts!!!👋👋👋
This song is such a staple and DEARLY loved by all in the "Jamily" (Pearl Jam fan family😉). You just sincerely need to see them doing it Live. Just pick any one of the "lives" out there on YT (or go to PJ's official channel) and pic any one.... you can't go wrong!! Also, on the part about Eddie changing the lyrics sometimes... it's SOOOOO true!!
Sometimes he sticks with more "serious" lyric changes that may fit the tone of whatever is going on in the world at the moment, and other times.... he's just being plain silly and making fun of himself, his vocal delivery (slow/slurred) and plays off the long running joke that "even Eddie Vedder doesn't know the actual lyrics to "Yellow Ledbetter"!😜😆
Oh and, in complete agreement with what you said about sometimes you don't need to know the lyrics to simply enjoy a song, here's an example... one time Ed, just being silly, changed the lyrics again and it was him just singing about French fries!! Wtf???🤦‍♀🤣😂🤣 It was HYSTERICAL, but the thing is... still sounded PHENOMENAL!!!👊🙃
Love seeing your appreciation for the iconic Pearl Jam!!!🥰 Great reaction too!!! Peace and light...💞

I remember the first time I heard this song was on some late night radio show and I instantly loved it. I already owned Ten and I knew it wasn't on there, so I went out the next day to try to find it, and at the time, it was only available on the Jeremy maxi single that had been released in the UK. I had to special order it from my local record store but it was definitely worth it, as it also had the unreleased song Footsteps on it. You should give that one a try as well.

So I'm late with this but Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time and this is one of my favorite songs and the thing you have to realize about this song is no one knows what the words are. Eddie Vedder changes the words regularly when he sings it, I'm not sure he even knows wtf he's saying in the original recording. The idea of a lyric video for Yellow Ledbetter is really funny to me. :)

If it helps Grunge was a Changing of the Guard. Motley Crew OUT - Pearl Jam,/AIC/Nirvana/Soundgarden IN! You just KNEW Everything was going to be different from that point on. There was a new consciousness. I personally/naively thought that the future of music could never devolve from that point. Boy was I WRONG!

What you were saying about the song. Yah your right but sometimes those songs they write. That they aren't talking seriously. Then that song became a hit. Then the band ends up hating that song. Sometimes that happens. However in the case of this song. They loved it. A reason they didn't release it was they didn't want people to get sick of it! This song always take me back to a time when I went threw a bad summer. I was a victim of a hate crime. Had a broken arm. Couldn't do what I wanted that summer. I was getting out of middle in 96. I am a white dude. Any my sister and Brother and some of there friends. Well helped me out of a bad time this song was always on. Tragic summer turned into a great one for me.

I’ve know some of the facts behind this song as of a couple years ago when I saw a clip of the concert u mentioned where Eddie tells what it’s about…but before that I’ve loved this song without ever knowing what it was about or what most of the lyrics even were, kinda like you were saying. Anyway, another fact I didn’t know (that this song wasn’t released on any album but still became so popular) made me think about why the words might blur together so much. I mean yea, Eddie Vedder can tend to do that a bit…but in this song it’s way beyond anything that could seem unintentional. Unless…(and here’s my thought) maybe this was an unfinished vocal that just ended up being perfect for what is needed. I mean, the song speaks for itself. You understand it whether u know what it’s about or not. You relate to it regardless of the story of the lyrics based on the feeling behind the vocal and whatever it makes you feel. So I’m thinking what if Eddie was just “riffing” lyrics when they were writing this song…just to kinda see what worked or maybe just like the singers version of jamming. Maybe the song way 85% written, the ideas were all in place but it wasn’t fine tuned just yet…and I’m invisioning, after a trial recording session, everyone just blown away by this song. And perhaps it wasn’t released on a full album bc as it stands (on paper) it was unfinished…but the plan was to re-record the lyrics in a more polished version…and the debate or conflict of whether to released more polished version that didn’t carry as much magic…or just keep the rough draft version which as we know contains 3 nines fine pure soul magic? Idk…I have no actual reason to believe what I just typed is true…it’s just a thought that came into my head and i guess I’m just doing the creative writers version of jamming or riffing on the idea…but it seems like a possibility bc I know a lot of singers and rappers will do a sort of gibberish kind of singing just to get a sense of word placement and feeling behind the lyrics that are being written…and just fill it in as they write. Anyway (there goes a 1/2 hour of my life) keep up the good work Salvo. And I love the song facts in the beginning of the reaction!

ledbetter is a fairly mellow song and very blues oriented, with Mike pulling in all his Hendrix influenced riffs. if you want more hard hitting grunge songs you need to go to deeper cuts like Leash, Once, or songs off Vs. like Blood, Not For You, etc.
a lot of their early songs were the band jamming and eddie spontaneously adding lyrics over the top of their jams. they have almost always written the music first and then given it to eddie to write the lyrics.
also Ledbetter has become their signature closing song and they began using it as a clear signal to the fans that the concert was in fact over and they weren't coming out for any more encores. otherwise the fans wouldn't leave.

Incubus is definitely post grunge. this song really harkens back to 70s blues rock like hendrix, led zep. if you listen to those type of bands you will see the influence.
the thing about grunge as a music genre was none of the so called grunge bands really sounded that much alike, and they all hated being lumped into the grunge category. Nirvana was more punk, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains were more metal and PJ is more hard rock, so there isn't really a specific grunge sound. same with the lesser known grunge bands, mudhoney is very punk, melvins is more punk metal, etc.
it was more of a music movement, tied in with an aesthetic social awareness, and became a fashion style towards the end. PJ is also not the most 'grungy' of the grunge bands, which is something they got a lot of flack for at the time, even though they were at the forefront of the genre bringing it to the mainstream with nirvana.

  • @tmt8425

It’s not really grunge-this is Jimi Hendrix inspired using F and B chords. Jimi loved from F Chord I guess. If you know Hendrix and can play Hendrix, you definitely hear it
I’ve heard Eddie give at least three explanations. My guess is, like the lyrics, that the song has no particu 17:04 lar or set meaning. I have him
say that his voice is just another instrument, but he puts in in the hook. “I don’t know whether I’m the boxer or the bad” bc life is can be confusing. However I don’t know if anything about this song is true. His biological brother died in a climbing accident in 2016. which after the first Gulf War in 90-91. If you play Hendrix (I don’t) you find the F and B chord and you recognize the similarities. Not common chords in plain rock. I had a munis instructed. I was playing around with some Yellow Ledbetter, but didn’t know all. Instructor said he liked that son and it was Pearl Jam trying to do Hendrix.

    • @tmt8425
      @tmt8425 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have 11 live versions of this song. All lyrics are different, except the hook (don’t know whether I’m the boxer or the bag.). If he can’t come up twitch a new lyric on the spot he seems to default “on the way side on on the front side letter” at the beginning a of a new verse.

I think that what your potentially not understanding about grunge is the social political aspect! Grunge in Pearl Jam sense is very different from grunge in Nirvana‘s sense, Pearl Jam and Nirvana did share being a counter culture, iconic type of band, though, that is where the grunge lands.

Yellow Ledbetter is absolutely NOT grunge. It is absolutely blues-rock.
