Eddie changes the lyrics literally every concert. This is their show closer. The actual original meaning was about when his friends brother got back from the war and how people treated him.
Pearl Jam has been my favorite band for over 30 years. It’s a rabbit hole. And don’t stress about the lyrics on this song. He changes them regularly. It’s more important to view his voice (on this song) as just another instrument, making amazing sounds with the other instruments.
When Mike McCready plays, you really *feel* it. That's why the 'make me cry' is in the lyrics, it's Eddie telling that to Mike leading into a gorgeous guitar solo.
🥰🥰🥰🥰 A Pearl Jam staple!! One of my all-time favs!! Long live Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam... the last of the 4 greats of Grunge!!😊❤ EDIT: the lyrics you pulled up are wrong. Sadly too many sites have the lyrics completely wrong. The song is deep and beautiful. We PJ fans who know what it's really about feel this deep in our souls.😌 That's why every single person in that audience is singing every single word with Eddie!😉 Oh and Mike McCready's guitar work in Ledbetter is soul-piercing!! Simply beautiful!!!🤗
Yellow Ledbetter is when we all know we have just experienced one of the best nights of our lives & had a bonding moment with 18000+ others who feel the same. Feeling happiness because you are blessed to have been in this band's presence, and sadness because you know the night is almost over. You want to bottle this feeling and the PJ friends you've met or reconnected with forever.
You'd have to listen to the "album" version in order to follow the lyrics you find online. I put album in quotes because this was a b-side track on one of their singles, although it's become their staple encore song for their concerts. Eddie changes the lyrics just about every time they perform the song live.
Facts!! But I'll add that Eddie changes the lyrics most times to fit the current state of the world in political terms (he despises the filth in politics/politicians). They're have been a few times where he's so disgusted with political bullshit, during Ledbetter... he actually just starts singing about French fries and other stupid crap to drive his point home about how it's all so stupid! lol!!🤣😂🤣 God bless him and PJ!! Gotta love them!!🥰
Pearl Jam "Black - Unplugged Version" is one of the best song I've ever heard. The amount of emotion that Eddie Vedder pours into that song is heart-wrenching
Definitely a top live performance. Highly recommend it! (Also it’s easy to understand what he’s saying/singing in that one) Update: it looks like Britt reacted to this one already!
Just like the others have said...Eddie changes the lyrics to this song live. This is an ICONIC song for many many reasons (it was played at the end of the last episode of Friends). I've always thought the song (one of my top five favorite songs ever) is about a feeling more than a constant flow of the lyrical story. The listener picks up a phrase or two that strike a chord in their own psyche - in other words it's left to the listeners interpretation. Eddies voice doesn't stand out among other singers but his ability to convey emotion through his voice is virtually unmatched. What a talent! Listen to Alive, *Even Flow*, Jeremy, *Black*, Daughter, Betterman, *Wishlist* , *Off He Goes*, Man of the Hour and check out the studio version of Yellow Ledbetter for the full effect. 👍👍✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
Beautiful comment, you nailed it in terms of this song being more about a feeling. Even though Eddie wrote this in response to a specific moment in time for him... it's a universal feeling. And even if people can't understand what he's saying... they feel every note and vibration of Ed's vocals and the bands instrumentals. This song is as real and pure as it gets... ON ALL LEVELS (whether u know the lyrics or not).
It's been a while since I've seen them live but the concert I went to was still one of the best concerts I ever went to. I know some people want to see the band live and hear them sing and play and get annoyed with the crowd singing along, but the fan interaction is what makes it fun everybody sings along everybody knows the lyrics (most of lyrics of this song anyways 😂). Your having a good time with people that like the same music as you. Most everyone getting along. Good times.
You had one of my favorite reactions to PJ’s unplugged set back in the day, I think he messed up the lyrics on Black in that set too… he just makes them up it’s a PJ thing. Yellowledbetter is especially known to not have set lyrics.
I always heard the lever on the guitar called a whammy bar, it changes the tension of the strings to add vibrato. The guitarists here can explain it much better than I. My understanding of the lyrics was about a letter informing a family of the death of their son in the Gulf War.
This has been one of my all time favorite songs for 20 years, and I've never known for sure exactly what he's singing. Somehow, that's part of the charm of the song. The "lever thing" is a vibrato bar, better known as a whammy bar. It's used to quickly moderate the tension on all the strings at once to dramatically bend pitch mid-note.
The first time I heard this song was on a bootleg album of a concert in Australia that version is one of my favorites. It used to be so hard to get tickets to their show. I finally went and saw them. The venue stopped their show early because of noise ordinance. Eddie was angry and yelled at them. And, they got to do one more song. They always close with Yellow Ledbetter.. That version was totally different then the other renditions. The topic was changed from war, to talking crap to the venue. He called them pu***ies, said they to get sleep to wake up in the morning to go to work. That tour they recorded every concert that you could go home to listen too. I was sad, the only show not available was the show I went to. A couple of years ago, they added all the concerts to TH-cam music. And that show was there. So, cool to hear it,after 20 years.
Will never forget seeing Pearl Jam when I was 13 years old (mid 90s). My mom took me to the concert and even though the show was entirely acoustic, it was incredible!!! Eddie Vedder's vocals have always been close to my heart
I don’t think many of us knew what Eddie was saying in this song, or actually some of his other songs and yes it sounded like he improvised some lyrics in this video or maybe he wrote more lyrics. Eddie was usually difficult to understand so it ain’t just you 😂😂😂🙏🙏
Grunge in general is pretty memeable with the lyrics, since they are hard to understand on initial listen. But they tend to have much deeper meaning and often get better with repeated listening as you slowly realize what is being sung about
My fave Pearl Jam song, Eddie sounds like he’s singing in cursive on this track 🤣 Can u PLEASE react to “Your Winter” by Sister Hazel, the acoustic version ❤️
Great reaction Britt, they are pretty amazing as a band and Eddie's vocals are always on point. Great band. You know Britt, i think like 3 or 4 months ago I remember you doing a reaction for unplugged "Black" by them.
there really are no lyrics to the song. Mike Mccready was playing this on guitar and band joined in, Eddie sang some melody over it and boom. song made. Lyrics were never penned.
You should also check out Given to fly and Release great deep meaningful songs by Pearl Jam also easy to understand and Eddie changes the lyrics for Yellow ledbetter mostly whenever he sings it live so it isn't your fault, eazy :D
Heres what Ed said about the song before: It was written around the Gulf War-this was “Papa Bush,” and it’s about a guy whose brother went to fight in the Gulf War. He was kind of an alternative-looking kid, like we were with our shorts and tights and long hair, whatever we have going on… activists and artists like many of the young people in Seattle, and smart people. We’re all drug addicts. So it’s a story about his brother being killed over there, and then he gets a yellow letter in the mail. So he tries to walk this off in this little suburban neighborhood. He’s walking it off and his mind is racing and he doesn’t know what to do. He feels like he can’t take a step without falling into some deep abyss. And so he’s walking and walking and he sees a couple on a porch with an American flag. And then he waves to them like ‘my brother,’ and the people look at him like ‘you fucking scumbag,’ like ‘who are you.’ They don’t know. They don’t know the inside. They’re just judging him by his cover. So that’s what the thought was.”
The original was an anonymously sang lyric, and a b-side from the album Ten's singles...purposely sounding, "drunken". For interpretation. So it could be sung, and Eddie could sing it with whatever lyrics if performing it live.
The "lever thing" is called a tremolo, coloquilally sometimes called a whammy bar. You may also sometimes hear people call it Floyd Rose, but that's a specific brand which has their own specific implementation of a tremolo.
When the song was originally made. Eddie stated that the song wasn’t finished. Which is probably why he added more lyrics to this version. Improvising.
If you change the letters around you get yellow letter bed... Meaning your porch where you got the "yellow letter" jobs after you had a family member who died in the line of duty..... And yes Eddie changes the lyrics everytime, and so they say there are no "official lyrics"
I seen an obscure interview with ed where they asked him the lyrics to Ledbetter and he laughed and said he didn't know them when they recorded it, and doesn't know them now. whatever comes to mind...... that's Vedder.
Mexican flag is based of of the Mexica (aka Aztec)origin myth where they fled to a small island in the middle of a lake and saw an eagle on a cactus holding a snake in a talon.
Someone did you a disservice by doing a live intro to Pearl Jam, you would be way better off starting with their great debut album, 10 and their legendary songs Alive, Even Flow and Black. Also do the official video Jeremy, it is shocking and what a story, still relevant today. What you just saw, Yellow Ledbetter is an awesome tune, the studio mix is perfect but live was always a trip and not sure where it would go. Eddie was infamous for improvising lyrics back in the day if so inspired. Try Alive next, either the studio audio or the official video, both are dope. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎹🎶
Eddie changes the lyrics up pretty much every time he sings it. It about someone who he is close to him dying in a war. The lyrics that you are reading are the studio version. This time he sings about his brother coming home in a box or a bag. In other words, he brother died in the war.
It's about a soldier back home from the Gulf War. He doesn't know whether he is the 'boxer or the bag' due to how people in his community react to the fact that he was a part of that war.
They're incredible but it's so hard to hear the lyrics to this song. Sometimes I think the crowd knows them as well as the band! I saw them first time last month and the crowd energy was WILD. And the band was insanely incredible. I've listened since high school and I fell in love with them again. I highly recommend seeing them live!
The "shaky" sound is called vibrato. Eddie is one of my top 5 favorite singers - not to even mention my massive crush on him🫠 I love that you pulled up lyrics cause Eddie is famous for being hard to understand 😂
Britt, LOVE the way you wore your hair in this video. I know you've probably never received this kind of comment before, but some women just look SMOKIN' with a hat on, and semi-curly, medium-length hair under the hat. Yes, you're one of those women who can carry that look. (Don't worry, love your music reactions too lol)
If you listen to a Pearl Jam live performance, any lyrical references can be thrown out the window full stop. PJ is not a "jam band" per se, but mix up their live performances of hit songs at every stop to keep themselves and the fans engaged. It's a great thing!
Eddie changes the lyrics literally every concert. This is their show closer. The actual original meaning was about when his friends brother got back from the war and how people treated him.
Yep, about how he’d walk by and the neighbors wouldn’t wave or acknowledge him.
It’s one of the show closers. They have a few they will close with, depending on the show.
It's the same meaning every time. He just changes the lyrics
There are lyrics?? 😅😅
@@nettiemac 🤣😂🤣 Good one! lol!!
You not only reacted to PJ before (‘Black’ MTV unplugged) but also inducted Eddie into the PDC :)
Pearl Jam has been my favorite band for over 30 years. It’s a rabbit hole.

As said above lyrics change every show. But so does the guitar, its a jam song, and a way to give something unique every concert
Amazing guitar tribute to Hendrix!!! Love it!!❤ There’s a show at MSG where the band leaves the stage and the guitarists just keeps playing the outro!

Eddie has a very unique and powerful voice. There's no other band like Pearl Jam.
Yellow Ledbetter is a classic, such a GREAT track. As for the lyrics, every link you find on them will be slightly different.
Before there was mumble rap there was Eddie Vedder.
Kurt Cobain to Eddie Vedder "Dude wtf did you say?"
🤣😂🤣 lol!!! Kurt to Eddie "Dude wtf did you say?"... good one!!😜 I'm in stitches!!!🤣 Thanks!!😁
This has always been my favorite pearl jam song
This is the song that every time they play eddie changes the lyrics.
Britt girl, yes you reacted to Pearl Jam , you reacted to one of their best song", black",, live on Mtv😊

Tremolo bar or vibrato bar. It lifts and releases the bridge that raises and lowers the strings. You got it!!! 👍🏻
☺much better explanation of how it works.

This song has roots. Telling a story of love. Conviction. And ultimately regret. Hard pill to swallow. ❤ I see you and I feel you
i have been listening to this song since the first release, and never bother to knew the lyrics until today. I just like the music.
Grunge in general is pretty memeable with the lyrics, since they are hard to understand on initial listen. But they tend to have much deeper meaning and often get better with repeated listening as you slowly realize what is being sung about
Eddie would usually change up the lyrics to songs they play live especially to this song depending where they're performing it so don't be confused.
The lever is called a Whammy Bar. It's used to add vibrato to the guitar notes.
Whammy bar or tremolo arm is the lever that changes pitch when pushed or pulled.
Eddies pretty much the last living legend from 90s grunge...RIP Chris , Layne , Kurt and Scott plus Chester...

You definitely have to Google the lyrics. This is one of the most famous "Misheard Lyrics" videos on TH-cam...which is quite entertaining.

The lever on the guitar you wondered about is technically called a "tremolo arm", but most guitarists call it a "whammy bar."
Awesome ❤️🔥
Now you gotta listen to the Tibet freedom concert and kisten to that yellow ledbetter. Its by far the best.
I don’t even try to understand the lyrics If it’s not easily understood I just listen to the music 🎵 ❤

Box or the bag
"Let's see what they have to say...." Nobody knows lol
Very true , it's the music , mood , eddies timbre and a cold beer...
He changes the lyrics when they perform it live
Don't worry about lyrics with Pearl Jam live, Eddie is famous for moving words around or improvising,
Oh wow... you need need need to listen to "Black" the unplugged version
She already has.
Eddie changes the words to this song everytime he sings it
If you go to a PJ show and they close with this, you sing whatever you want and then just sit back and listen to Mike wail.
They're incredible but it's so hard to hear the lyrics to this song. Sometimes I think the crowd knows them as well as the band! I saw them first time last month and the crowd energy was WILD. Not a big fan of Pearl Jam but utmost respect for doing there thing and turning away from celebrity!
Britt, LOVE the way you wore your hair in this video. I know you've probably never received this kind of comment before, but some women just look SMOKIN' with a hat on, and semi-curly, medium-length hair under the hat. Still Got The Blues by Gary Moore ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The "lever thing" is called a "whammy bar".🙂
with Pearl Jam, you either get it or you don't . listen to the crowd.
He improvises this song.
This song has no lyrics basically. They put lyrics in almbum version of course but Eddie Vedder basically change 70 % of it every single concert
Eddie changes lyrics to most songs all the time live. He is the greatest lyricist ever. I'd say he's Number 1, 2 and 3. No one comes close.
Everlast and Santana "Put your lights on"
I've been listening to this song for maybe 30 years, and I still don't know the lyrics...lol But it's fun trying.
There’s great studio versions.
It's called a whammy bar that lever thing
