    I think that if you decide to start any crew, once you have the core box and a few others in that keyword, check out the alternative master boxes from the Malifaux Burns expansion. You will get an alt master for your crew, another alt master for a different crew, and one additional model that work for both masters. I think this is a great way to get into another crew with a different master and see different options available for your current crew.

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the title system is really cool for expanding playability within your same crew. I like how in the rules now, you don’t have to declare which master version you’re using.

    I wouldn't even call myself a new player. My friend was like "hey, I am interested in playing malifaux, you wanna play?" And I'm like "sure, whatever", and now I am like "what did I get into?!" Thanks for those overview videos. I don't know anythink so I chose my master by the rule of cool and ordered Jedza. So let's see what this game is actually about.

    The diversity and representation in the game is pretty good and gets better as time goes on. I can say the Asian representation has improved since 1e and 2e and the fluff also assuages some concerns IMHO (but I'm also a YT dude so I don't have authority).
    The one thing to note is each faction can be viewed as both good and bad from different angles and there are elements in each that swing heavily in either moral direction. Seamus is supposed to be evil while Molly is the kindhearted one and both reside in the Resurrectionist Faction.
    Explorer's Society can best be described as pulp and popular fiction from that era. It's sort of a 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' organization.
    Schemes and Stones does a lot of helpful budget and tactical stuff and The Other Coast is a very beginner-friendly podcast.

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The faction composition of both good and evil characters is a good note. And thanks for the Explorer’s Society help 😂.

    I’m just getting into the game but surprised you didn’t talk about the Versatile keyword. Seems that the easiest way to get into multiple play styles is to buy a couple of core boxes of the same faction and fill out with versatile boxes that can work for both. Cheaper than your additional boxes being more of the same individual keyword. Maybe the versatile aren’t good enough to be viable 🤷‍♂️

    Started playing 1st edition and we had a blast. Thought they did a great job with 2nd edition rules changes, and really loved what they did with the model line, even if some models end up with really spindly bits.

  • @DavesMiniMenagerie
    @DavesMiniMenagerie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great vid, I agree that the way the rules are set up is cool. The basic rules are simple, all the complexity is in the model cards. So that means you can just focus on your crew at the start to get a hang of it and you'll hardly ever need to look back at the core rules

    I like hordy skirmishy types

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Ian! There are plenty of ways to play a higher model count in Malifaux. I think it’s a matter of flavor.
      They did a pretty good job of making sure every faction has access to more models in some way.
      In Malifaux, this can often be a summoning type. You might consider Ressurectionists in general. Otherwise, you could consider Guild “Guard” Keyword.
      But again, I’d recommend looking through the masters and picking one with a cool flavor, then checking back with one of the small communities.

    This video makes me super sad. I had a whole bunch of Outcast stuff on order at my FLGS (in the U.K.) and they just couldn’t get the stock. It dragged on for months before they had to cancel my order and gave me store credit, which I spent on Marvel Crisis Protocol instead. I really like that game, but I always look at things like this and wonder what might have been with Malifaux… great video tho!

      O man! What a bummer, I'm so sorry, Matt! MCP does look super fun, and I've painted MODOK for fun. But Malifaux just hits different. It's, IMO, the best gameplay of any miniatures game, and the most iconic world. I think the world isn't for everybody, but it plays around with a collage of many different ideas. I hesitate to say that the only other miniatures game that's taken a similar approach and been successful is 40k. Hot take.

    I love everything about game!
    The only complaint I've had was assembly. Some of the sculptures have odd locations where pieces fit, or a guide is needed, while the guides available online are very simple and don't always give a good idea of how parts should be.
    My experience is the Titania's core box. One of the modles have a rounded forearm stump that goes to a hand with a completely flat wrist. Titania herself has no location on her curvy body for her clear rectangle support piece that's ment hold her up in the air. Though online I've seen some pretty crafty people make her stand on terrain or something else. Aeslin doesn't have any identifiable way to sit on the base, and went on by just getting some roots glued to the base rim.
    Once the assembly was handled though, everything else was very enjoyable!

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Gionis! If you mean being able to flit across the board and harass your opponents, you have a few options.
      Off the top of my head, Mei Feng comes to mind. Mei Feng can get across the board into your opponents DZ in a single activation, and put up defensive buffs. So your crew is free to run schemes while your opponent is left dealing with your tanky master in their backline.
      Another option might be Misaki. She’s more of a glass cannon alpha strike master. Similar deal-she hops into your opponents DZ and wrecks face.
      Happy camping!

    I'm curious about something when it comes to setting up the game. When you hire your crew, do you find yourself having to proxy a lot of your minis? It sounds like if you are trying to best align your crew with the scheme/strategy that you could be spending a lot of money on minis.

    So, let's say my wife and I want to pick up a couple sets for us to play with each other at home.
    It seems like the best way to go about that would be to buy maybe two or three core sets, and then some models that share key words with as many of the core set masters as we can find. That should give us a bit of variety to choose from.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @CornerCase
      @CornerCase  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perfect understanding. Master Core set + 2 keyword boxes or Master Core + Faction Starter + Keyword Box. If you want to be really efficient, use the M3E app to calc the SS cost to get up to 50SS, but generally, those 2 combos of 3 boxes will get you up to 50.

    Great Vid, thanks for that ... It would have helped me get a footing when i started last year ;)
    A couple of things:
    "Malifaux University" - TH-cam: goes over the rules of ... well ... everything in a University lecture style. Pretty useful to get this "Hey I have heard/read that at some point" Feeling for the game. Esspecially useful are their master analysis videos, where they go over how "complicated" a Keyword is and what the master does.
    I am a bit disapointed the phrase "rule of cool" did not come up in the Vid when the "chose your first master" topic came up. Sure, the experience should be the first thing one should look for. Sometimes one just wants some cool things, regardless of playstyle etc.
    One "mistake by omission" - you mentioned that a master is (loose quoting) "only allowed to take models from their Keyword in their crew" which is technically untrue (besides versityles you can take out of keyword models for +1 stone). I am well aware that this is targeted at beginners and in that case things should be kept simple but the watcher should be aware of the "oversimplification" you employed here - just a quick mention of this not being the "final level of crewbuilding" should suffice. In fact (I can't think of other examples of the top of my head), whenever you make an oversimplification of the rules, just add an asterix in the video, so that the viewer is aware that you left out some details for the sake of accessability for beginners.
    Maybe as an additional thing to mention (because this could influence decisions for beginners): you mention faction starter boxes generally and point out the Neverborn one in specific (for obvious reasons). Just to give this "first impression looksy" a more balanced appeal, show/mention all currently available starter boxes explicitly to keep things "even".
    Oh and Markers are still all over the place in terms of size. It all depends on your chosen faction (obviously), but in Neverborn alone you have (iirc) 4 50mm, 1 40mm, 2 30mm - still valid, just an * ;).
    And one final thing you could/should mention for all those geriatric gamers (like me ;) ) out there that prefer paper over modern technology (at least at the gaming table) you could mention that the (errata's) cards and rules etc are available to be printed out at one's convenience on the wyrd website as well.
    Again, loved your vid and you deserve every bit of praise (heck, I was being stingy with that ^^) just some minor points to polish the end product.

      Thanks as always, Harald! To add to your point about versatile models, I did also have to dance around the difference between Masters and Leaders, since henchmen can technically be taken as leaders instead of masters. I also didn’t mention Title Masters. Once you figure that into the whole equation, you’re at like 80+ playstyles 😂.
      Good critiques all, and I’m working on updating the description right now based on everyone’s feedback.
      Always appreciate you, Harald.

      Yeah, I've been leaning a lot on Defective Dice's channel. They've got great lore breakdowns. It's one thing to listen to Breachside, but sometimes you just want the gist, you know? DD just released Malifaux Lore Ep.0, which actually was a bit of a hole in my knowledge. I was listening to the master-specific content this whole time, but having the backdrop context helps a lot.

    The travesty of missing Schemes and Stones as a resource for info. Personally my favorite podcast.
    Also each Master and crew have strengths and weaknesses depending on the schemes and strategies that will be available for the game. If you get a couple of keyword models that have another keyword besides the master you play currently, dipping into that keywords master can give you more options for objectives. Example: if you start with Wong and the Wizz-bang keyword in Bayou picking up Swine-Cursed will be nice. But Swine-Cursed are also Sooey and Pig keywords leading you nicely into Ulix.

    Nice Video :) very informative! Malifaux is a great game. However, 3 malifaux boxes for less than 100$? In what world/Shop? That is my one big personal negative of the game. 4 tiny plastic miniatures for 50-60$. That just hurts. And in many cases you do not need all the Models in the Box. For example in *keeping the peace* you never need 3 watchers. In other cases, the miniature is just ugly (looking at you Hoffman2).
