I'd always felt kinda "meh" towards the Telecaster - I became a born again Tele fellow when I realised how many of my favourite songs and artists used them. At the same time I twigged that so many wannabe pop stars back in the day aspired to be seen playing the flashy new modern looking strat. However for me it was the artists who stuck with the now outdated teles who seemed more authentic. They weren't concerned about trends. I've come to regard the Tele now as representing a statement of unwillingness to follow the crowd.
I played a strat for years, then a Les Paul, then I played a MIJ 52 re-issue on the neck pickup through a Fender twin...and bought it very shortly afterwards! Like....10 minutes later.
One of those green scrub pads on a sponge can take that high gloss off the neck in a couple of minutes...instant satin finish. The Chrissie Hynds tele is pretty. I bought my tele last year a butterscotch black guard Fender that I'm really bonding with...I always love to see guitar collectors pass guitars on to young beginners!
I love the Royal T. Itransitioned from an "all Strat, all the time" guy to a Tele aficionado as I got older but still love the Strat neck pickup sound and the Lollar allows me the best of both worlds.
I always wanted a Nashville Tele, I've never connected with the look of a strat but I love pickup options! I got an offbrand Nashville Tele last year that has a volume blend for adding the 3rd pickup to any of the 5 way modes, it's pretty awesome!
Been intrigued by tenors being a huge Neko fan forever and always seeing her brandishing her SG. Such a uniquely cool sound. They and HB Madcat copy are the keepers for sure, plus the latter has your own personal mods, so there's that!
I really can't decide if I love Teles more than JMs . I am not a super bright twang and Country fan, but the simplistic nature of them makes them perfect for genuinely everything - especially with the right pickups. I miss my MIA Pro Tele in white w/RW more than any possession that I've owned.
Awesome video! I have been playing since 1997 and just got my first Telecaster. I played one in a band in 1999 which I borrowed from the lead guitarist. I bought myself the John 5 Ghost Telecaster and Im in awe. I usually play an Ibanez and this Ghost is worlds different. Enjoying relearning this guitar after so many years.
Unique walk through. Great to hear the first hand nuance of the different brands and configs. I have four incl a g&l trib thinline which is 👍🏼. Teles with all the variations require you to have several! 👏
The comment about Teles just breeding got me laughing. I wanted a Tele really bad and now I have 4. I'm not trying to collect guitars. I only have 1 x Strat, 1 x Lead II, 1 x BC Rich guitar with coil splitting humbuckers, and somehow 4 x Teles😵💫
Great video as always, about the correct string gauge for tuning in 5ths, If you go by the Fender Tenor Tele scale of 22.75" and octave mandolin tuning (G2, D3, A3, E4) and punch the numbers in the String Tension Calculator website, you'll arrive at 42, 26, 16, 10.5! Swapping the 26 for a 24, that is three strings form a 9-42 set and maybe a single 10 gauge spare.
@@GetOffset I did not know the scale length for that one! But the tenor guitar tuning rabbit hole runs real deep. Apparently the most common tuning is CGDA (I presume: C3, G3, D4, A4; but for a near 23" Scale guitar, you may have to tune to the lower ovate). I just skimmed the Eastwood Guitars page, and it is full of useful info, not to mention all the vintage stuff. I'd also find out Warren Ellis' tuning is and give that a try as well. Good Luck
Caught the Tele bug in my early 60's last year...got 7 of them now from budget HB TE52 to a USA Pro II (MIM, FGN, G&L, and CV50s (2) in between). Lollar and Fralins (and MFDs) are great upgrades. HB's are quite good...even the Roswells are decent. My HB is getting Bootstrap Palo Duro's tomorrow. I need more Teles... As for offset...got a Reverend Double Agent...amazing quality/tone/playability. Sold my USA JazzM last year...didn't bond with it. My G&L with MFDs sounds amazing...but the neck is a true baseball bat...huge! Fun vid. Thanks from USA-WV
The CH tele has a 7.25 radius because it is a scanned copy of the neck on her 1961 telecaster. 60’s Fenders all have a 7.25” radius. The 9.5” radius didn’t exist until the 1980’s. That neck has a slab rosewood fingerboard which is really rare. It’s really easy to remove the gloss from the neck.
Welcome to the Fender Tele Owners Club. All the Fender Teles I have or have played have loose pickup switch tips! Love the G&Ls, and H Bentons (I have a black Paisley). Yes, they do breed in the dark.
Tough choice to get rid of a signature guitar of an artist you really like. That said, you're not playing it, and someone else will. Chrissy Hind is such an icon. Love that "aged" Fiesta Red. It appears to be a gorgeous metallic rust color, and the roasted maple neck and burgundy pickguard are a gorgeous compliment. The baritone has such a rich, buttery tone.
I am a Telecaster person, I could not imagine getting rid of any of them, in fact I want more, especially a Firefly Madcat, they wont ship to anywhere outside the US though and to use a forwarding service to the UK is expensive. nearly as much as the guitars cost. I have a couple of humbucker Telecasters but I don't really think of them as Telecasters as even with a split coil they sound nothing like a Telecaster, I wound a bobbin with just 250 winds and used that as a dummy coil for one of my Telecasters as I had some recording work to do and wanted to use a Telecaster at least once but without the hum, it looked odd as I had it in a 3D printed box that was velcroed to the guitar body as I didn't want to route out the back of the body. I have been playing guitar since 1975 and have had hundreds of guitars since then, I have regretted selling the majority of the ones I let go, for many years I haven't had to sell some equipment in order to buy something new and so my collection has grown. I guarantee if you sell some or all of your Telecasters there will be days when you totally regret selling, if you are set on selling them though, buy just one vintage Telecaster, it will serve you well and accumulate in value more than inflation.
So, I've been playing the guitar for 40+ and I never had a tele until I bought a $200 Jet 300 or something like that? Beautiful lake placid blue and maple board. I ended up gifting it on, but that led to my Schecter PT special with the P90 neck and single coil bridge. Binding, vintage saddles, killer guitar! That, in turn, led to picking up a 2015 Fender American standard with "custom shop" pups! It's like the perfect telecaster for me! Great sounding pickups, sunburst, rosewood board, and nice thin neck! Yes! Finally, a thin neck tele!
I keep one Tele in the lineup and try to keep the whole lineup limited to 7 guitars, max. The Tele that I’ve played for some 25 years is a 1989 Mighty Mite ‘61 replica in Dick Dale Chartreuse Sparkle with rewound Fender CS Fat 50’s p/u’s in the low 9k range, .047 treble bleed, PRS pot’s with an audio taper volume and linear tone on a reverse mounted panel with the switch at the bottom and period correct Fender hardware. Typical 7.25/25.5 neck with a real Brazilian slab board harvested from a vintage neck which was cracked. Also a Swamp Ash body and also heavy. Makes my gold top LP feel light. But- there’s something about that guitar; it just does everything.
I bought a Squier FSR CV Custom Baritone last year with Alnico V single coils in "purple sparkle"...agreed I don't mind the glossy neck but only on this guitar otherwise I prefer satin finishes and love the fact it's 7.0lbs. I put flat wounds on all my electrics and prefer them as they are softer, quieter. While I play it the least out of all my other guitars, I lean on this for all my ambient compositions. The cool vibe about baritones is that you have 6-7 tuning variations... Bay the way, my first T style was also a Harley Benton TE53-KR Keith Richards Tribute...my experience with HB (also have one of their vintage series S style) is that apparently their quality control department often skimps on allowing sharp frets and checking intonation to pass through inspection. AND the %$#@ is 10lbs ! Gorgeous finish, brass plate bridge, HS configurations... it's for resale !
I always thought I'd prefer vintage radius (7.25), but TBH, I prefer a flatter radius. I would keep the Chrissie Hynde, though. I think it's special. I too have a weird relationship with the neck. It's wide and thin, which is a weird combination. But I've learned to love it. The pups are unique. They're almost hi-fi, in a way.
Getting either medium jumbo, jumbo or tall narrow frets installed on a tele with a 7.25 radius will absolutely transform the guitar ;-) It's the combination of 7.25 AND the tiny vintage frets which often make the guitar awkward for lead work, especially for wider bends due to the amount of finger drag on the wood. If you really want to make a difference, I would also recommend installing stainless steel frets. I did this on mine and it's now the best guitar Tele I've ever owned.
I like wide range pickups in the neck more than the bridge. I think my ideal setup for that Deluxe would be something like a p90 or a filtertron in the bridge with the wide range in the neck.
I need to get you connected to a Lite Ash Tele. Fender made them in 2004-2009 with a reissue in 2011. Most are out of Korea but 2011 ones are from Indonesia. It was Fender’s first line in Korean factories and they are absolute GEMs
Love the look .and sound of the CH guitar, plus a fan of her. I've shopped for one a few rimes and often they are just a little out of reach price wise. I have the Harley Benton Mad Cat and love it except it is to heavy for me, mine is over 10 pounds, wish it was 2 or 3 pounds lighter. I might sell it and buy the Firefly version of the Mad Cat with the hope of it being lighter.
I'm thinking of getting either the Am Pro II or Performer Tele. Played some and loved them. They've got the 9.5" radius and bullet truss rod adjustment I want. Love the vintage looks, but not always the specs. Just have to find one I pick up in a guitar shop that I fall in love with
I mostly play offsets and bought an oxblood Fender Telecaster because I've always wanted an oxblood guitar, it had an ebony fretboard, and figured I should get a Telecaster. That was like... 8 months ago. I've still yet to take it out of the box. I got a Paranormal Offset SJ Telecaster a little while back and it's pretty rad, though. I've played that a little bit and it's nice, though I don't think that counts as a Telecaster...
Generally I don't like the knife switches, even so, I do like the Nashville 3-pup. The Baritone is very nice, tunes in "B". The Telly Tenor is nice, I never knew about the alternate tuned guitars. Don't care for the pickups that over drive (distort). The "B" bender is a cool idea. Guitars with 2 humbuckers are fine for me. My first guitar was a Silvertone and that had 2 humbuckers, and the switching was just like a LP, which I prefer.
The Fender Deluxe is a rock machine. If you’re mainly playing jazz, that might not be the best axe for you. Also that “Golden Girl” G&L is crazy awesome. The B bender + hipshot for Drop D makes it really unique. I’d keep that one for sure just because… where else are going to find another guitar with those features? It sounds great too!
I have the same one (CH) ....I almost never play it either. Not a fan of pickups. I don't care for the way the strings feel on the neck. Pretty but I am amazed I still have it.
I've been playing guitar since the mid 80s and I still don't own a fender. I've tried to find one that I can live with. So far that hasn't happened. Fenders all sound thin, especially Stratocasters. I know many love that bluesy clanky sound, but I prefer a more meaty, bottom heavy Cheap Trick sound.
Maybe I’m out of place here, but a low output Les Paul, with an out-of-phase pot is my probable “conclusive” guitar. I find it comfortable, the sounds I can pry out of it encompass most of the nice/intriguing tones I hear in my head, and if I install the Göldo Les Trem II (I don’t keep it in the guitar), I have a VERY good vibrato arm. One could add a coil-tap/split, but it really isn’t needed. I have versatility in droves (very much unobtainable from a Strat, let alone a non-heavily-modded Tele); the tone gamut allows me to reach into territories single coils don’t allow. Is it a bit heavier than a Tele? Yep, but it’s not hard to get used to it. I couldn’t imagine any other instrument that would be on every recorded song/project I’ve done since 2016, but there is it.
32:07 wait, is that a Virgil Abloh/Off White inspired guitar strap? I love that!!!!! Also I think the video where you got the b bender in its original form was one of the first videos I ever watched on your channel. I remember you saying you didn’t care about the paint job if that allowed you to afford a b bender (right? Or did I make that up)? And in that moment I knew I had to follow your channel. Love the Golden Girl glow up!
Oh yeah, I love a tenor for disco. I need to get a real one sometime soon. I would not want to sell any of those guitars. They are all such groovy telecasters
I have an original H.S A mad cat. Got it for 1200 dollars in mint condition 🤭 But i swear the pickups in yours sound better. The neck was fine, but the bridge was so different and thin. I swapped them for some lollars, and now im happy with it. Really want another tele, but next for me is an offset
that tele deluxe had the biggest disparity between looks and sound. I don't always like the roadworn treatment but that model is GORGEOUS! But I agree those pickups really hold it back. Even with humbuckers, a tele deluxe should still have lots of snap and clarity. Those pickups are so muddy!
@@GetOffset - I am happy that you are keeping it for awhile longer. Its a beautiful T-guitar ! I´m thinking of buying one from Thomann (Harley Benton) and doing an upgrade on it to Prince´s specs from his original guitar. Its not just the cool "looks" on it, but it has a unique sound which I like to hear. There are some Tele´s in your collection which are keepers - like that Chrissie Hynde "Pretenders" signiture model.. It will go up in price very soon AND it looks beautiful too. I enjoy seeing your videos, so have FUN making them !
Don't really know what you should "get rid" of, those guitars all look pretty nice. I do have a suggestion for a guitar you might like to acquire if you can find one. This is the Telecaster I have had since the early nineties: a Fender Japan Tobacco Burst, V-neck 50's repro and I love the way it plays. I guess you might say it appears "roadworn" because it fell of the wall (not my fault) at my local Guitar Center; finish was chipped here and there... but the neck was good. Got a pretty good discount due to that too - about half the regular price.
i think i decided i like tele single coils more than strat single coils, i don't know what it is... maybe its less "quacky." my only normal config. tele is a solo guitar kit that i put together horribly. neck feels like a baseball bat, but it sounds good. also have the paranormal baritone and it is the bee's knees (except the pickup selector likes to keep popping back into middle position whenever i try to move it.) i had some dumb aversion to telecasters when i was young, but i'm glad i got away from that nonsense, because they're pretty cool. maybe one day i'll get one of the nice butterscotch ones with the sweet maple fretboard (if it could have black block inlays too, it would be amazing) and be a really cool person.
I’m fighting temptation to get a Mad Cat, just the looks of it makes it one of the most attractive guitars, I want to sell most of my guitars, then buy one of this.
I have never liked the shape of the Telecaster just looks like a lump to me. I've got so used to playing Strat style guitars and that is where I'm comfortable , just built my 4th one ( hard tail ) . I have been pondering on a Tele style of late but still undecided , is there that much difference , scales the same , can chose various pick ups. I've always loved the shape of an SG for it's symmetrical shape but don't seem to get on with a Gibson scale length , tried a PRS and found the same. I don't know at the end of the day , personal preference obviously and what you are comfortable with , I'd just say find your own preference and enjoy playing.
I'm glad i found this chanbel. I have many guitars, i think i like the tele most of all. I have 2 teles in my collection, a Fender Modern Player series and Vintera II 50'S tele. They are both great, but i want tele with a Rosewood neck. Do you think there is difference in dound between a rose wood and a Maple Neck? I play a lot of Classic Rock, i.c., AC/DC, Stones, Beatles, Green Day, 38 Special that kind of music are there any "good" that yiu have tried with a Rosewood Neck?
good on you, giving the thinline to a lil' guy. keep the baritone, keep the G&L.keep the nashville. keep the parking lot tenor, sell the rest. except, give the other tenor to me. because i will make some pickups for it to do it justice. really.
Curious about what you do about cases. If I had to move tomorrow, I don't have enough cases for all my guitars. They mostly hang on the wall unless they are going to the gig. What do you all do?
My main guitar is my airline map tenor. I had the fender tenor too but it was just a bad instrument. Buzz was insane and the nut was poorly cut. The airline is great it has just as the SG a small neck and guitar string spacing. I play in gdae it’s just the best tuning it’s logical and allows creativity in my case
I may have to talk to Eastwood about the Airline Map Tenor-I wanted to like their Warren Ellis so badly but that string spacing is honestly a little too unnatural.
@@GetOffset love to hear your take!. I really like the pickups they are nice and bright for humbuckers. The Fender came tuned in dgbe and didn’t like gdae. The airline map came tuned gdae with the correct nutslots for the thicker gauges.
Just watched your Vintera II Jazzmaster videos. If you’re using the same signal chain and amp, these teles don’t sparkle, don’t compete (sadly) Or maybe they need different strings and different amps. The G+L comes closer
I am fascinated about these bands you're playing with where you would use a B-Bender and also playing Neko Case songs. What are the bands called and are playing only in the PNW?
I do quite a few country music tribute gigs locally in Seattle. There's an annual John Prine tribute at the Tractor Tavern and an annual Women of Country Music tribute at the Royal Room. In 2022 they had a Neko Case/kd lang/Emmylou Harris night and that called for the baritone. I thnk I used the bari on 3-ish songs including "Deep Red Bells" IIRC. That being said, my band Sundae Crush is writing right now and I anticipate we'll do some mini tours this year and plan for something bigger when the album is out.
G&L are phenomenal guitars, great call on keeping that one.
They are!
So glad you're keeping that Nashville! It's such a fun color (audibly and visually)!
I also hate sticky necks. Whenever I encounter one, I take a damp magic eraser to it until I get it smoothed out how I like. Works like a charm.

That's the "blender" mod. Extremely simple (one wire) and effective.
So happy to see you loving your G&L. Huge fan!
I think if you sanded back the neck in the CH tele and played it a little more, it might grown on you. It’s got the same radius as your musicmaster

Just have to find one I pick up in a guitar shop that I fall in love with
Not mentioning it. but I literally got the hiccups from laughing.
Shhhhhhh 😣
I recognized that Mad Cat right off the bat. I always wanted the Hohner one.
yoooo me tooo!
I have the same one (CH)
....I almost never play it either.
I think all you need is the g&l, one of the tenors, and the baritone.
Got it for 1200 dollars in mint condition 🤭
But i swear the pickups in yours sound better. The neck was fine, but the bridge was so different and thin. I swapped them for some lollars, and now im happy with it. Really want another tele, but next for me is an offset
Those vintera road worn humbuckers are nice but kinda wrong for a telecaster lol
the first segment Guitar , Firefly also makes a copy of this model...
I saw Phil McKnight just covered it. The firefly looks better
@@GetOffset people say firefly is pretty solid brand... I'm gonna order this for this xmas..
more of this sounds great! 8:38
that tele deluxe had the biggest disparity between looks and sound. I don't always like the roadworn treatment but that model is GORGEOUS! But I agree those pickups really hold it back. Even with humbuckers, a tele deluxe should still have lots of snap and clarity. Those pickups are so muddy!
Someone who saw this video actually sent me replacement pickups! They definitely sound better, but, ultimately, I'm not sure I love the guitar.
Lovely
😎
Thanks 🤗
I will buy that "Mad Cat" from you ! Its definitely a cool looking fakey. Sounds great
I appreciate that, but this one isn't for sale (yet)!
It will go up
in price very soon AND it looks beautiful too.
I enjoy seeing your videos, so have FUN making them !
You're too kind!@@MAX96MENDES
Don't really know what you should "get rid" of, those guitars all look pretty nice. I do have a suggestion for a guitar you might like to acquire if you can find one.
This is the Telecaster I have had since the early nineties: a Fender Japan Tobacco Burst, V-neck 50's repro and I love the way it plays. I guess you might say it appears "roadworn" because it fell of the wall (not my fault) at my local Guitar Center; finish was chipped here and there... but the neck was good. Got a pretty good discount due to that too - about half the regular price.
Warren Ellis. Legend.
The Bad Seeds and Grinderman are rabbit holes that run deep.Nick Cave can do it on his own, but he's much better working with others.
I like Tele’s and have gotten very close to buying one like twice. However my band heavily relies on the Jazzmaster vibe so I gotta stick with it.
Teles are the guitar that one matures into. The most basic, simple guitar ever made is the ONLY one you’ll ever need.
That Vintera is a freak. Jazz master headstock and pickups with a Tele body?
i think i decided i like tele single coils more than strat single coils, i don't know what it is... maybe its less "quacky." my only normal config. tele is a solo guitar kit that i put together horribly. neck feels like a baseball bat, but it sounds good. also have the paranormal baritone and it is the bee's knees (except the pickup selector likes to keep popping back into middle position whenever i try to move it.) i had some dumb aversion to telecasters when i was young, but i'm glad i got away from that nonsense, because they're pretty cool. maybe one day i'll get one of the nice butterscotch ones with the sweet maple fretboard (if it could have black block inlays too, it would be amazing) and be a really cool person.
I’m fighting temptation to get a Mad Cat, just the looks of it makes it one of the most attractive guitars, I want to sell most of my guitars, then buy one of this.
If I could have a real H.S. Mad Cat, I'd trade the good majority of my Teles for it.
Offsets and Teles?? My two favorite things. ❤
Get some white paint and a small artist paint brush and paint the F hole edges. It will dress it up nicely
If I was going to risk another MIA guitar it would be a G & L. TBH, I'm sticking with MIJ Fenders these days.
I play a lot of Classic Rock, i.c.,
AC/DC, Stones, Beatles, Green Day,
38 Special that kind of music are there any "good" that yiu have tried with a Rosewood Neck?
I think they're so different but I love both! I more and more like the feel of a maple neck.
good on you, giving the thinline to a lil' guy. keep the baritone, keep the G&L.keep the nashville. keep the parking lot tenor, sell the rest. except, give the other tenor to me. because i will make some pickups for it to do it justice. really.
Nah, I like the Fender Tele.
Kiddo will be getting a great starter guitar
I keep looking at that white deluxe like "I could fix her..." But God I have too many guitars.
Curious about what you do about cases. If I had to move tomorrow, I don't have enough cases for all my guitars. They mostly hang on the wall unless they are going to the gig. What do you all do?
To be completely honest, if I had to move tomorrow, I'd take trips to local guitar shops and sell the ones I don't have cases or gig bags for.
I scored the gearit for $45 on prime day. Hard to beat at that price
DANG well done!
Telecaster switch tips falling off is really common.
I use a Strat tip on mine; problem solved.
Wow, I have one single coil guitar, one p90 guitar, one humbucker guitar, a baritone and a bass, and I feel like that's a lot.
Whaat no tele with a neck humbucker for those distinguished jazz tones 😢 you are a very charming lady btw
I actually like the humbuckers
I own an American Standard Tele, a 62 Japanese custom and an all original 71 in blonde. And you mention Harley Benson ??
When the tele bug bites it hard to get rid of
You're not wrong!
Just watched your Vintera II Jazzmaster videos. If you’re using the same signal chain and amp, these teles don’t sparkle, don’t compete (sadly)
Or maybe they need different strings and different amps.
The G+L comes closer
I like the 2nd one
have you checked out the Balaguer Thicket, it's kind of an offset tele shape
Haven't played one, but they look fun!
What amp are you using?
So is that first tenor guitar tuned to DGBE like a baritone ukulele?
No, it's tuned EADG.
Rid the lot and get one really cool American pro or vintage 👍
Is that The Hold Steady you play on about 29:20
Can't listen rn but probably lol
I always thought Prince's Tele was a black guard.
It's not
Same, they pile up huh
Teles do breed! I hated them for 20 years, all the sudden I have 3 i use all regularly and don't care that all of my strats need some level of work.
A tenor funk machine? Who knew?
Your so cool and your channel is the best. I have the same problem with 1980:super Strat shredder guitars. I want a Hamer and a Robin REAL bad.
