Special needs parents are sometimes reminded daily that their child won't ever be at a level of age appropriateness. It's just a reality...and it's ok. I mean, it's not ok but it's not what we chose to focus on...does that make sense? *side note - Priscilla got a couple comments on pictures she posted about our costumes. Just a reminder to not read into it for more than what it is. It's a funny costume that defines parenting in general. It has nothing to do with autism so let's not make it that way. mmkay?
I have 13 year old non verbal autistic son. He wakes up super early several days a week. Like 2am 4 days a week. I saw your costume on Instagram and I loved it so very much. Makes my tired self laugh so hard. I always say my son is the Energized Bunny. Love the costume, THANK YOU for making this special needs mom laugh.
I don’t even have kids and I know all parents regardless are always exhausted 🙄 I thought the costume was great, and she did awesome choosing to actually sign thank you! ❤️
She's happy, healthy, loved, and living up to her potential, that's what's really important. A lot of age appropriateness is socially influenced and a societal expectation, we already know how Abbie feels about those.
I work in a group home for adult men with "developmental disabilities ". I also have an 18 year old daughter on the spectrum. According to company policy I cannot allow the men in my care to watch anything considered not age appropriate. This includes Disney films. I can understand that maybe we don't have those playing all day but I work a 12 hour shift on Saturday evening to early Sunday. I cannot understand what the harm is in a two hour fun movie with popcorn on a Saturday night. They have jobs and occupational therapy all week long not to mention all the goals we work on in the evening. I am a 47 year old woman with a 29 year old son and an 18 year old daughter and I enjoy a Disney movie from time to time. Sometimes I feel like people need to just chill about this age appropriate stuff. Everyone deserves a fun evening every once in a while and I don't care what your age or "situation " is. Sometimes I feel like people forget that "they" are people just like everybody else.
I'm 30 and refuse to watch anything other than kids stuff. It makes me happy and there is no shame in that to me 🤷 like I have to live in the real world why not watch something with a happy ending
I did a practicum at a place like that. I couldn't agree more with chilling about the age-appropriate stuff. Realistically speaking, no adult acts like an adult all the time, regardless of whether or not they have special needs and it's an unfair and, frankly, depressing expectation to have for clients. Heck, even I, a relatively "normal" adult have "childish" hobbies and interests that wouldn't be allowed at such a place. Nobody should be asked to give up what makes them happy and increases their quality of life.
I work/volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, it is primarily a youth organization, however not only do they have a lot of Adults leadership programs, they even wave any age limit requirements for adults with disabilities and developmental problems. A 39 year old earned his Eagle Scout Badge a couple months ago. Disney movies are for the whole family.
My almost 4 year old daughter loves curling up on couch and watching you guys with me. She always comes up saying “momma can we watch Abbie?!?” It makes my day. Y’all have impacted my life and now hers too! Thank you!
Oh yeah the college I'm in does a week for kids moving on campus They usually have a pajama onsie days, at least the two years I was on campus. It's very fun running around in hippos, Lions, elephants, tiger, fairy, etc onesies. I mean people wear whatever they want, as long as it's appropriate, I know many people walking around in onesies. I used to walk around in my animal pajama bottoms and my graduation shirt 😂
I just love watching Abbie progressing in her communication!!! She has come so far!! It just melts my heart!! Its crazy I don't actually know your family but have been watching so long I feel as I do! I'm so proud of her!!🤗❤😘🙏🏼😉
I'm 38 years old with disabilities but higher functioning. I went to a vocational program in high school called LABBB. There was a life skill's class I helped out in. I miss them alot and I like watching Abbie because her reactions remind me of those old friends. I also like hearing how you tackle the situations that arise and the funny conversations. Love you guys and wish I could meet you all someday.
I work in a faculty for the mentally handicapped. They are always harrpping on age appropriate things for our clients. My question to the bosses is are we talking chronologically or are we talking mental age? They never have an answer.
abbylane62 yes!! Just because someone is chronologically a teen or adult doesn’t mean they’re mentally that age. When talking about age appropriate things it’s really a person to person determination not a set thing.
ArmySister2 yeah - also mental age can be uneven I’m intellectually probably closer to 18 - I self-study Calculus 2 and other math topics that are considered hard by most I’m autistic and 14. My social/emotional age is closer to 9, though.
The costumes were awesome! And my mom said very accurate 🤣🤣🤣. “Age appropriate” isn’t something that should be determined by how long someone has been alive so much as what they like/understand/etc.
I am on the spectrum. I'm 23 and I went trick or treating this year as Deadpool. A few years ago I was Finn from Adventure Time. It's not bad to stay young forever 😊
I absolutely loved the knocking on the (classroom?) doors of the school - brilliant, and Abi is so polite :) So heartwarming, you guys, your family, her school... Makes me smile so much X
My grandpa had a PhD and was a university professor but couldn’t use a can opener or open a child proof cap. You guys are amazig parents who have never given up on her, that matters more than anything.
I ABSOLUTELY loved your guy's costume! And I completely understand about the whole age appropriate range. My oldest daughter is special needs. And she's 20. Well she still Trick or Treats. And although we received a lot of love this year. We also had a few not so nice people. Even 1 lady refused to give her a piece of candy. Before I could even explain,my daughter said she must not like butterflies lol my daughter is a 5/7 year old range. So thank you for continuing to raise awareness. Love Abbie and her smile!
It use to hert a lot going to the store and trying to find something for my boy to play with. Yes I have cryed in the middle Wal-Mart with all the toys knowing my boy is almost 7. And plays with stuff are for toddlers. But all I see now is my boy playing. And it gives me tears of joy. He has come a long way. For so meny years he would just rock and thumb thew a book and humm.
I homeschool my girls, and we watch this channel together. These vlogs give us so many conversations that are beautiful. It makes us better people. Thank you!
You are a pair of great parents, the Challenge you are going through makes cry of joy, never loose your strenght as mom and dad. If there were more people like you in this world , it would be a better place. Lots of love from another human!
With the carved pumpkins I tried this for the first time. Spray half bleach half water. It worked amazing there was no mold or decaying of the pumpkins. I love what you do and I love your family.
I work with adults with disabilities and it's very true that people with a developmental disability are in different age ranges for different things and it can be difficult to conform things to that age range because you don't want them to feel bad. It's hard because we do classes and we look for ideas as far as lesson plans and a lot of the things they can do would be meant for kindergardeners and we have to change it slightly because they are adults. Kind of confusing. But you're doing great with Abbie. I love watching your videos. ♡
That is so cool how you go door to door in the school to trick or treat! And the sensory games were a plus. You can tell Abbie had a great time. Ps your costumes were AWESOME!
I cannot even begin to tell you the love that I have on my heart for Abbey, you are absolutely the best parents! I have a Granddaughter with Special needs and she is the air I breathe.
When I saw your costumes I didn't even think twice. This vlog gave me so much joy to watch. I loved when she drew the face on her pumpkin because in my world that is normal. Thank you for always sharing life! Really sorry about the fridge and all that wasted food, hope it got all fixed.👯♀️🧩💕
I’m a new subscriber so I’m going through your older videos, and I was just thinking. You guys are really lucky because you’ll have so many memories of Abbie here in your videos. This is awesome. You guys are wonderful. Thank you for teaching us so much, but most of all thank you for being supportive and so loving to your daughter and your family.
Can I just say.. Priscilla you look amazing! Today’s video you can see just how well you’re doing on your journey. Keep it up, mama! You are an inspiration and motivation.
Off-topic: I’m taking intro to psychology in college right now, and I already knew a bunch of terms through your videos (particularly positive and negative punishment/reinforcement. A lot of people struggled with that and I understood it pretty quickly). Even though I don’t think I’m pursuing psych specifically, thank you for the help! 😂
Abbie in that bunny suit was absolutely adorable! I have become hyper aware of “age appropriate” labels. You’re right. It does sting a little but it’s like you said, normal is overrated!
“ this is the houses you egg, they give you apples or oranges” 😂😂 Priscilla is so funny lol I LOVE how happy Abbie gets so happy and it’s so cute to see how happy she gets and how she reacts I love your guys family! ( I got top fan on facebook so happy!)
Watching your whole family literally brightens my day even tho I was in special education classes with kids that have autism from 1st until I graduated my best friend all threw school had autism she an her family sadly moved across the country. I have learned so much more that I didn't know about autism from your family You guys are an inspiration. I love Abbie she is an amazing person
my daughter is 5 in a few weeks and her develop mental age is at around 2 to 3 years in some areas shes off to special school next year 2020 pretty excited for her i love watching you all love from Australia
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Your videos have made me so much more aware of what autism is and I’m so thankful for that! I’m sure you get messages like this a lot, but please keep it up. I think awareness is so important!!
It was definitely appropriate for Abbie’s Autistic Age and both your parental feels. I thought you both looked Great. You know better than anyone else about your child. Love the Maass Squad Family and don’t question yourselves or let others question you, trust you’re doing what’s right for your Family ♥️🙏
Here’s what is always age appropriate, loving parents who go way out of their way to honor and celebrate the magnificence of their children. I loved your costumes! I thought it was clever and cute. My son is 14 and wanted to dress up like a character from a horror film. Prob not age appropriate either in reality. I’m glad you celebrated Abbie and she looked like she loved her school party and sharing it with you! Rock on Maas squad!
I always struggled with age appropriate as a teacher because what motivated some of the kids and they enjoyed (like toys that played music) weren’t always age appropriate. Teaching in age appropriate range was hard too.
I have a 17 year old with Down Syndrome. She seems to bounce between "teen" and "toddler" depending on the day. It makes it very difficult to shop for her at times because you don't ever want her to feel like you see her as a baby, but the reality is she still very much enjoys sensory books from the baby section. Some days she's all teen and wants lip gloss and brushes her hair and stares at herself in the mirror, then the next day or even next hour we are watching Dora or Barney and she's playing with her squishies and crinkle page books. I had to push past my own desires for her to "grow up" and learn to be OK with shopping in the toddler toys still if that made her happy.
I feel for Asa. My granddaughter is 16 but her age development is 6 to 7 th. We used the blue bucket and it went great. People were really understanding and they said it was a great idea. So thank you for sharing about the blue bucket
Y’all are super cute in those costumes!! I’m a newbie so watching in February but it’s a great idea... I’m a Grandma that watches her 2 grand kids on the weekends so I totally relate 🤣😂 Hope it was a happy halloween 🎃
I feel humbled, grateful and a bit intrusive watching your vlogs. Only because it’s your daily real life happenings. In a way I am imposing in on your life. At the same time thankful for the very educational and eye opening content that you allow us “outsiders” into your home, and most personal and true life happenings. I’ve only been a subscriber for about a month and I’ve laughed and cried with your family. You guys have become my ohana Hugs!
Sometimes I feel like I have the knowledge of a toddler when trying to do certain things, and others I’m on it ! But that doesn’t define me, or should it define Abbie. I think Abbie’s knows and understands a lot more than we know. She seems to understand quite a bit. The SMILE, that kids smile blows me away. She can just steal your heart. Asa and Priscilla you are BLESSED 🥰
Abbie as the energizer bunny is the greatest costume ever. You guys are doing a great job. Even though certain times the reality may sting, know that it's all worth it and that you have a beautiful, happy, energized daughter who loves life.
I worked at a facility where they tried to push age appropriate activities. Mentally for most of the clients, they would never be older than 20 and even 6. Everyone is different and should be treated accordingly.
That is how I look at my son who has Autism. He is awesome is certain areas where he is on age but other areas he is behind. Just depends and depends on the child. You are doing what's best for Abbey!
My son is nearly as tall as I am and will need to shave soon. For Halloween it was the same request every year: Red Angry Bird. Thankfully there was a sequel but we still had to search on Amazon because nobody cares about Angry Birds anymore! This time we needed an adult size and he’s bigger than Mom but still toddler like in many ways. It’s hard to believe that he will be an adult in just a handful of years and we will have to petition for guardianship. I just want him to be happy and living in the least restrictive environment but I doubt he will be able to earn any sort of living and it worries me because at this stage we should be giving driving lessons and talking about giving an allowance for chores.
Please tell Abby how proud I personally am of her (as I'm sure all of your subscribers are). Her communication is off the charts and her ability to do so with no prompting is a beautiful thing. It's amazing to watch her progress over the years. Such an amazing young lady with an amazing family. Please know that i feel blessed that we are included in watching Abby grow up.
You guys are amazing. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. You have taught me so much about the autistic children in which I support. Thank you untold amounts. ❤️
I absolutely love watching Abbie have a great time and enjoying her school party 🎊🎉🥳🥳🥳. You and Pricilla do an amazing job raising awareness for autism but most importantly raising Abbie ❤️❤️. You all have an amazing family and I love watching your channel ❤️❤️
I love you guys so much! I send nothing but love from England! And all the hugs ever for your entire family and friends! I loved when Abbie grabbed an apple and just went nom!
I work with children with autism at a residential school. I just started working a couple weeks ago and I had someone ask me if I have worked with children in the spectrum before, I didn’t know how to respond. I have never worked with kids with autism but I was able to take some of the tips you guys have shared to help some of my kiddos
My refrigerator went out 6 months ago. Used electrical pinpoint tester, and found outlet had power, and refrigerator plug had power from outlet up to 1 1/2 foot then lost power. Caused from always moving Frig to clean, and cord kinked and severed. Simple repair.
Aww bless her she didn't want to leave dad because you only just got back! Your costumes looks epic, they lady that walked by with the costume that looks like it's holding her that was a deadly costume 😊 I love the concept of preparing the children for trick or treating that's so fun 💙
I love your costumes. Your school is exactly like Luke’s old school called cedar lane school in Howard county Maryland. He went there for four years. It had all different special needs kids and just a small autism section. Every year they do a special Olympics event. That school still has my heart.
hello ! i just found out bout your channel 2 weeks ago.. your vlogs (mostly when Abbie is laughing/being cheeky/silly ) have been making me smile without me realising it.. i dont usually smile i always remind myself to chew my food but after watchin Abbie eats her food, i am not the only one who inhale food. :D
Onesies are very in right now!!! We as a generation are very lazy and love putting in very little effort for an amazing results. As parents I would say you nailed it!
I would’ve for sure worn that at 14 with my parents!! Don’t worry about about social constructs, every family is different and that’s what makes it special.
You guys explain things and make us understand things so very well and it's much appreciated! Thank u and so much love! I'm love being so educated that I'm telling people things I've learned from u all...u have made me a smarter more compassionate person!🥰
I got those sticky eyeballs to pass out to the non-candy trick or treaters this year and I feel you, Asa... They are NASTY sticky, not the "fun" sticky.
We can't have pumpkins either. We live in the desert...100 miles from Las Vegas. We carve the night before and keep them in the fridge until Halloween afternoon. Even then the end up looking like a toothless grandpa. Abby's costume was perfect..I have 2 teenage boys. One dressed as a chicken, and the other was a Cactus. They were full suits like Abby's. The boys were 14 and 17. They're not on the spectrum, but they love Halloween. This year one of them dressed in head to toe yellow and said he was mustard.
So I don’t celebrate Halloween but I LOVED this vlog. It made me cry! The costume was great, seeing the kids practicing in their school was awesome, and Abbie’s excitement and joy as always touched my heart 💜 (cross posting)
That is so what parents of all children feel like. The kids have so much energy and the more they have the less the patents have. As far as costumes go my daughter who is in her mid 30s was Patty and her boyfriend was Quail man. My granddaughter more grown up in her costume.
Wow! I can see Abbie was having a great time. Love how they had Abbie go from classroom to classroom. Great idea. And the sensory play look awesome! Love the costumes.❤️
I absolutely love your costumes!!!!! What a creative idea! And I am so excited to see how well Abby did. It looked like she was really enjoying herself!
Special needs parents are sometimes reminded daily that their child won't ever be at a level of age appropriateness. It's just a reality...and it's ok. I loved the costumes, very creative! Y'all are just too cute! I may even steal this idea for my 5 year old and I next year!!! Lol 🐰👯♀️🙌
Mmkay
She's happy, healthy, loved, and living up to her potential, that's what's really important. A lot of age appropriateness is socially influenced and a societal expectation, we already know how Abbie feels about those.
So very true.
Appropriateness isn't a word.
Harriet Lundt no one cares
@@Toffee146 actually appropriateness is a word lol look it up
Her face is a whole mood when he asked if she wanted her cupcake😍
I love it when Abbie gets that excited too... The smile those dimples makes my smile ENORMOUS!!!
Asa for President 💙 ❤️💚💜
Okay but I LOL’d when Priscilla turned to Abbie and said “How many months old are you?” 😅
Gabby and then she’s gets hit with a fork .. me when people ask me what my age is
Gabby same
I created up when she said that
Ja ke It’s around 13:20!

Give me a Disney movie anyday. Especially the Disney original movies! Halloweentown is still one of my favs.
Amen gurl
My almost 4 year old daughter loves curling up on couch and watching you guys with me.
She always comes up saying “momma can we watch Abbie?!?”
It makes my day. Y’all have impacted my life and now hers too! Thank you!
When Abby walked away from the bowling like "Not impressed" lolol. She offically became my spirit sister.
I didn’t think anything was wrong with her costume. I’ve seen neurotypical college kids wear unicorn onesies.
Agreed! 🐰💗
Loads of adults (me included!) have worn animal onesies on Halloween. Can't beat comfort!
Same!
Haha! I am 34 I wore a giraffe costume for Halloween!
Oh yeah the college I'm in does a week for kids moving on campus
They usually have a pajama onsie days, at least the two years I was on campus. It's very fun running around in hippos, Lions, elephants, tiger, fairy, etc onesies.

Asa you should suggest to the subscription box company have a “special abilities” box.
Perfect time to advocate!
I love that! I was thinking of that, too!
It is a great suggestion, but a company has to weigh out if it's cost effective to offer said box💁 Would be cool though
what a Fantastic Idea!
You cannot watch this without a smile and happy heart, and maybe a tear in the eye!! I love her so much!!

Most kids “ewww an apple☹️!”
Abbie “ Oooh an Apple!”😁
most kids like apples
paul beenis Well most kids in my country love apples, idk what’s going on in America
Misha Vesso donald trumps goin on
Hyun 현 didn’t ask don’t care plus you like anime
Who says ewwww to an apple honestly?
The costumes were awesome! And my mom said very accurate 🤣🤣🤣. “Age appropriate” isn’t something that should be determined by how long someone has been alive so much as what they like/understand/etc.

kels matthews we love that
I would have never thought of age appropriate with Abby and her costume
same and there are far worse things you can wear
The woman helping Abbs make the cupcake made my heart so happy.
I felt your costumes on a deep level. My kids always have so much energy and I’m always on low.

I watch a lot of darker stuff on TH-cam. But when I get ready to go to bed, I binge a few episodes of y'all's so I don't have night terrors! 🤘rock on!
Same. Demons and nightmares all day then end it wit alil fathering autism 😂
Same
I watch Pornhub before I go bed
I love how Abbie kept looking at Priscilla when they were making the pumpkin, such love in her expression.
Never lose your sense of fun.....it’s what makes you guys so so special 👍😘😍

Thank goodness someone gets as excited about cupcakes as I do! She’s got the right mindset for that deliciousness !
I cannot even begin to tell you the love that I have on my heart for Abbey, you are absolutely the best parents! I have a Granddaughter with Special needs and she is the air I breathe.
Lol I was thinking to myself look at her wearing the hat... then she immediately took it off I was like that’s my girl!

No matter what age you are , 30,10,50 your parents will still see you as a little cute baby , that’s just how parents are

I'm 56 and wear an Eeyore onesee, it's Kool Abby!❤️
my daughter is 5 in a few weeks and her develop mental age is at around 2 to 3 years in some areas shes off to special school next year 2020 pretty excited for her i love watching you all love from Australia
I’m so glad I stumbled upon your channel. Your videos have made me so much more aware of what autism is and I’m so thankful for that! I’m sure you get messages like this a lot, but please keep it up. I think awareness is so important!!
Loved the "real talk". Age appropriate and developmental ages are something I would love to hear a podcast on!
I can’t stop laughing Abbie’s costume is so adorable 😂🌈
Abbie as a bunny is the cutest thing ever 😭😍❤
I just adore your family. I also respect your views and how you run your channel the way you do. You guys make my heart smile everyday.
I love this it’s so wholesome! It makes me see from another families point of view.
I loved when Abbie grabbed an apple and just went nom!
hi neb im in the uk 2
@@helenabriggs9756 awesome! Great to know that more UK people watch:)
Abby eating the Apple immediately cracked me up. I can’t think of a better day for Abby then a day where everyone gives her food!
I think you guys are great parents. I follow your vlogs enjoy watching them .. I think you guys are spot on as far as parenting ☺
“How many months old are you?” I’m deceased!☠️☠️😂
This was so awesome. I'm so proud of you Abbie. Sitting here crying. You have learned so much. I'm so proud of you.
hello ! i just found out bout your channel 2 weeks ago..
your vlogs (mostly when Abbie is laughing/being cheeky/silly ) have been making me smile without me realising it.. i dont usually smile
i always remind myself to chew my food but after watchin Abbie eats her food, i am not the only one who inhale food. :D
Love your honesty about the sponsors, versus taking anything you are very selective for the right reasons ❤️
Onesies are very in right now!!!
We as a generation are very lazy and love putting in very little effort for an amazing results.
As parents I would say you nailed it!
What a wonderful vlog. Abigail is so precious. I have the same bunny suit and I'm 51. It keeps me warm on cold winter nights!
I think you’re whole family is wonderful, Abbie is beautiful and an amazing person!!!!!!
I would’ve for sure worn that at 14 with my parents!! Don’t worry about about social constructs, every family is different and that’s what makes it special.
I’m having the worst week but watch you guys it really helping
You can really tell how happy abbie is ! You guys are amazing parents
Abbie is mastering the "teenager looks". Like really Mom and Dad.
So I don’t celebrate Halloween but I LOVED this vlog. It made me cry! The costume was great, seeing the kids practicing in their school was awesome, and Abbie’s excitement and joy as always touched my heart 💜 (cross posting)
With the costumes I can hear Asa saying "that hair though!" I love it!🐰👯♀️👍🙌🧡
Shannon Fisher I can hear that too
Special place in heaven for all of you! You guys are absolutely amazing parents. Your 2 people I will always look up too! Keep being amazing!♥️
Abbie was having so much fun trick or treating! I truthfully thought she wouldn’t like it, I’m so glad I was wrong
I absolutely love your costumes!!!!! What a creative idea! And I am so excited to see how well Abby did. It looked like she was really enjoying herself!
Your costumes are great. Abbie made a cute energizer BUNNY. I just love to watch Abbie smile and be happy.
