I use to live in San Luis Obispo and knew this guy. He went by Eddie. If you had told me, in 2019, that Eddie would end up shooting and killing a detective; I would've said you belong in an insane asylum. The place that he burgled and recognized him as an ex-employee is a rock climbing gym. Before COVID, I saw him numerous times at the gym. And when I say that he was the last person I would've expected to do this, I cannot emphasize it enough. He was so well-liked and known by everyone at the gym; a very friendly and happy person who'd talk to everybody. I mean, I'd even describe him as jovial and always in good spirits. There was no sense of strangeness about him; no thousand yard stare or loner vibes. At that time he even shared an apartment with a few other climbers, and a few of us all met back at their place for a couple beers after one session. I remember one point just talking with him at the kitchen counter, as he grabbed me a drink; dude was funny and enjoyable to chat with. During COVID I recall some Instagram posts about him going missing in Mexico or something weird. This being posted by the rock climbing gym; they themselves were worried about him apparently disappearing. It was hard to make sense of what was going on; but it's like he fell off the map during the COVID lockdowns, and I guess something must've happened to him. When this story broke that a detective was killed in SLO -- a very safe town with very little crime -- and that it was Eddie, of all people... it definitely taught me a lesson about the impossibility of judging another person's character. I wish he had had that aspect about him that I could say "oh yeah, that guy -- we all knew he'd do something like this". But from all the experiences I, and my friends, had with him; he was the last guy we would've expected. And in a way that's actually the most unsettling thing about this: that someone could either have been like this all along or have changed so drastically in just a few years to end up committing murder. RIP Detective Benedetti. He had 2 young daughters.
Yea I read a article that said he started acting weird when returned to Mexico after 3 weeks, something definitely happened which sucks he sounded like a cool dude
I live in San Luis and my step mom is a dispatcher for the police and fire/medical and she handled this call, the community was devastated by the loss of officer Benedetti and he is and will be missed. Rest in Peace.
Dispatchers develop a relationship with "their" officers. They are affected in ways that police officers or deputy sheriff's may not realize. It goes without saying. On the other side of this, it is considered in very poor taste two ever snap at a dispatcher without at least apologizing. In the moment it happens. But a dispatcher is their Lifeline when they need it most. Agencies that don't repeat in real-time like the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department bother me because they have to put the system on the patch as they call it. Some dispatchers aren't completely tuned in because they're working another frequency and when an officer his request immediate backup and it's repeated his or her fellow officer can hear the tone of their voice and know to step it up. With my agency we would usually preface an urgent request with "emergency traffic" and that would clue everyone including the dispatcher in immediately.
I really really really hate to correct you as obviously you knew him and I didn’t but if I’m reading the right news articles his last name was Snyder. Let me know if you edit it and I’ll delete this comment as fast as possible. Or if I’m wrong you can call me an idiot. Either way my condolences.
Police seem to be independently operated and controlled by whims and opinions of themselves, supervisors, judges, townships, cities, counties, and states! (Police are not educated lawyers and many of them are without high school diplomas!) The job of a deputy or policeman attracts abusive sociopaths, psychopaths, perverts, and narcissists like drugs are to an addict more than any legal profession! Police must pay financial damage from their own pockets for unlawful acts against innocent taxpayers or the policing problem can only exacerbate further hate and demise against the profession! QUALIFIED IMMUNITY: "Must be ABOLISHED " ...!!
Dude, I hope the Detective is in heaven smiling that despite being killed, HIS gun was what successfully put that guy to sleep forever. Just a teeny bit of justice.
Being a vollie firefighter, I was talking with a deputy friend of mine about why we do what we do. He thought it was crazy I could pack up and go into a full involved building. I told him, Yes, everything in that environment is trying to kill me. But fire plays by rules. Remove one part of the fire tetrahedron, no more fire. Criminals don't play by rules. Yet our law enforcement folks have to do their job with more and more rules.
@@Opiemusnope. Those fall within the rules of how fire and smoke behave. Some people are just too stupid to notice the signs of said behavior because they don’t train for it.

Not to couch potato this, but for anyone serving a similar situation you should not approach the residence, you should wait for them to come out and then confront them on your own terms, especially since you already know this guy is a serial offender AND has possibly expressed a desire to kill cops. Sure this means you are going to be wasting hours of your time sitting around, but at this point it is not a normal situation since you actually know this is your guy, you should take every precaution. Entries are last resorts not first options, even if you have a warrant to enter. Entries are dangerous because the suspect can hear you approaching, but you can't hear when you are getting close to the suspect if they are just staying still, so you actually are losing the advantage even if your tactics are by the book.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kjthey had to approach the residence he wasn’t gonna come out for them, he even changed the deadbolts out hence why the landlords key didn’t work anymore most likely. It’s the shitty thing police have to do sometimes is push into scenarios where the odds aren’t in their favour, no officer will ever know the suspects house better than the suspect themselves
@@mullittmustang256 Typically yes, but given there wasn't any urgency here (which is the key) and especially given those points you mentioned they are big clues you are walking into a serious fight, and that's exactly why entry is not your first option. With the exception of high crime areas like SF, LA, NYC, etc, these are not daily occurrences but extremely unusual situations and should be treated as such.

The day of Detective Benedettis funeral there was a massive procession of moto officers, bearcats and many other agencies and so many people came out to support the SLO PD. It was a sad time yet uplifting to see all the support for that police force
Yeah bro. I always knock from the side. Every now and then you get apartment doors that are down narrow hallways so you have to stand in front of the door, it makes the hairs on my neck stand up.
It's called the "fatal funnel" for a reason. Never stand in a doorway, whether the door is open or closed, doors don't stop bullets, and although walls don't either, people don't think about shooting through walls as much and they don't expect you to be standing off to the side. I'm not blaming the officer at all, that landing was super crowded, but a couple little differences might have saved his life (he could have still died, so I wouldn't say it's a sure thing, but he could have had a chance if it had gone differently)
Man I never thought I'd see this. I knew Eddie years before this happened. He was a nice dude but would fall into some dark holes occasionally. We tried to help him keep his chin up but he eventually blamed his friends for his troubles and I broke ties. I was shocked when I learned how low he'd fallen. I can't imagine what he put this officer's family and friends through and it really messed with me for a month or so. RIP Detective Benedetti, I wish there was something I could have done for Eddie to prevent this.
Don't worry about "what ifs." Instead, just be a nice person, treat other people with respect, and be an example to follow. If you are religious, pray. if you aren't, then talk your feelings with someone.
About the social worker. It may have helped. I think having police turn up en masse is confronting to some people. Having a social worker turn up for a chat might work. I think cops are taking on too much and being put in shit situations. Having a discussion about some left field ideas might start saving some lives.
Some brave officers in this one. I’d hate to go into a room like that Edit: It seems I have said something controversial, how ever could this have happened 😅

Yeah. Gun control laws don't work unless it applies to all states. Unless you're all willing to give up your guns, not much else can be done. Just kill or be killed - survival of the fittest. Best of luck to you y'all across the pacific (I mean that sincerely, I have family and friends in the States)
And people still wonder why they should make guns illegal. Almost like it wouldn't do shit to criminals, and make the law abiding citizens unable to protect themselves
It's crazy that people go out of their way to sign up for the police force anymore. I have a really close friend that's an officer and we talk about this regularly, he says that even if it's a dangerous job he's still happy that he gets to help anybody who needs it. There's downsides, like the paperwork or getting called to a house over something stupid but occasionally he gets to really help someone in need and that makes everything worth it. I actually experienced firsthand what first responders can do yesterday. Even though it was paramedics and not police, my neighbor (a sweet old man unfortunately) had a seizure right outside of the front door of my apartment and I heard him. Opened the door and immediately called for an ambulance, the dispatcher walked me through checking his pulse and taking care of him until the paramedics arrived and took over. Everyone involved worked together to save this poor man's life and my perspective on life was changed in an incredibly short 30 minute period. I can only hope that even a single LEO, paramedic, firefighter, or anything similar sees this because from the bottom of my heart, every single one of you are heroes. Every singly day. This random dude on the internet can't thank you enough.

@churchofchris1973 Yep, that's unusual. San Looey Obispo is pretty common for non-Californians. While my original comment stated I don't know anyone directly affected by the shooting, I do have a client that lives in a nearby apartment complex to where the shootout happened. He called me asking what he should do cuz he heard gunfire. He's on the Autism spectrum, so I'm glad he called, and I just told him to stay inside and away from the windows. Thankfully he was never in real danger. This kind of stuff isn't altogether uncommon in Santa Maria, but for SLO, it was very unexpected.
@JohnyMeBoi where you from? If it's any of the countries that outright banned guns that isn't gun control...that's gun removal which isn't an option here.
You're looking at it wrong and I hear Americans say that the whole time. If all guns were gone. Then there would be no guns to use. I'll say it another way. If there were no cars on the road, people wouldn't die in car crashes. Simple really isn't it. At least it is for other countries who don't have the same issues as th US. Although I will say I think it's too late for America to do this, your bed has been made so you must sleep in it now.

I think the main problem with people over seas having opinions is they tend to generalize from what ive seen. Theyll have read one terrible news article which will make it look like its a literal war over here and theyll go alnog with it lol.

Damn... RIP. 😔
Wow. That's nuts. Thanks for sharing.
Yea I read a article that said he started acting weird when returned to Mexico after 3 weeks, something definitely happened which sucks he sounded like a cool dude

Good to hear from one of the family members of the person that handled the call
I was in SLO the day after this happened
She probably gets “stuck” around the house often in the weirdest places

@@mullittmustang256 Typically yes, but given there wasn't any urgency here (which is the key) and especially given those points you mentioned they are big clues you are walking into a serious fight, and that's exactly why entry is not your first option.
RIP to the officer killed, and prayers for the injured officer’s recovery.
Rip Dec. Benedetti, respect to the family's. Also hope to the Office Orozco for a speedy recovery.
More outstanding commentary.

Not really. It's like a Marvel movie synopsis, but this situation wasn't Thanos vs the guud guyz...

Oh my god your clip about “hey, can you go check on grandma” party scene was hilarious😂.
Just the right humor for a very sad and horrible situation. Thank you for all that you do.
Rest in peace to the officer and I hope his family can heal from this tragedy.

Im in the hospital rn due to a car accident & your videos are great to watch & help me feel like living a normal life. Your opening made me think about the highway patrol who came to see me in the icu, before i even got any medicine or crazy procedures he sat down & talked to, asking me general questions about the crash. I remember the look on his face, he got to the site 2 mins after the ems left so when he saw me he was probably shocked or scared, he wished me best of luck on my recovery and for the past 3 weeks ive heard people tell me im very lucky. I thank the officer and everyone who has supported me, drive safe everyone.
Edited: God bless to those hurt and my condolences to the families of the fallen, also that rifle looks badass even in the shadow on the building
My prayers for healing and strength during your recovery.

I hope this video makes a ton of money for the families of the fallen police officer. I'm from San Luis Obispo, and while I don't know anyone directly affected by this tragedy, it was still a big deal around here. Thank you, Donut, for your contributions to the fallen and injured officers, as well as your informative and entertaining content, even though this one in particular was a tough watch.
And thanks donut for pronouncing it San Luis Obispo correct.

This kind of stuff isn't altogether uncommon in Santa Maria, but for SLO, it was very unexpected.
bro is a must be a legend to survive a headshot
"He had several firearms that were not registered to him"
Yup. Yet another case proving no amount of gun control will stop this from happening.
Barf
Clearly the morons in congress and the ATF don’t understand the futility of impeding american citizens’ 2A rights
... yet we dont have that problem as often as you do here.... i wonder if its maybe due to gun control? nahh cant be
@JohnyMeBoi where you from? If it's any of the countries that outright banned guns that isn't gun control...that's gun removal which isn't an option here.
You're looking at it wrong and I hear Americans say that the whole time.
If all guns were gone. Then there would be no guns to use.
I'll say it another way.
If there were no cars on the road, people wouldn't die in car crashes. Simple really isn't it.
At least it is for other countries who don't have the same issues as th US.
Although I will say I think it's too late for America to do this, your bed has been made so you must sleep in it now.
Always a good day when donut posts even when it's sad
Agreed. His content always fascinates me so much.

I’m British. I often see it said that I shouldn’t have an opinion on these things (probably due to the misconception we can’t have guns). I disagree. Frankly I probably have just as much, if not more, respect for these officers as the people they serve. I wish the best for the family of the officer killed, and I hope this opens peoples eyes to the risk these men and women voluntarily face
We hear you and we love you ya beautiful man. Love our countrymen on the other side of the pond. Hell I’m Scotch-Irish and that’s on both sides of the family. The people who tell you to not have an opinion can shut it.
Anyone who can respect a man doing a selfless job to support their family can have a opinion. Ain't gotta be from here
I think the main problem with people over seas having opinions is they tend to generalize from what ive seen. I dont think there is an issue having opinions on a particular video or coupl of cops in videos but more often than not people talk shit about america without ever having been here or actually knowing about it. Theyll have read one terrible news article which will make it look like its a literal war over here and theyll go alnog with it lol.
