1965 Pontiac GTO Restoration - Episode 7 - Rear Window Channel Replacement

  • Hello and welcome to my channel! I want to introduce my 1965 Pontiac GTO. I discovered this car in Salt Lake City where it was destined for the scrap heap. It will require extensive restoration work and I will do my best to document the process in what will be a long series of videos. My goal is to transform this car into a 10 second street car in the next 12 months!
    In this episode I do a complete DIY for replacing the rear window channels. This same DIY should apply to most early GM A bodies as well.
    RUST BUCKET RESTOS MERCH IS NOW AVAILABLE! Please send me a message on Instagram for pricing and more pictures of the build. @Rust_Bucket_Restos

    Good to see you use weld-thru primer. So many are not using it on You TUbe Vids and I think many younger rebuilders will learn to do it wrong. Thanks for your work.

    Great job of removing the old window steel and like the way you ploughed through it like a pro!!
    Yes it’s labour intensive! But it’s greatly appreciated by us car restoration lovers!!
    I used my plasma cutter to cut the weld holes in the steel till I could afford a air punch!
    Call me mad!!! but I’ve fell in love with the Buick Le Sabre! I’d love a late 60s or early 70s with that 404 big block! Add some heads intake cam n headers! Yee haaawww!!
    Anyway enough of my xxxxx can’t wait to see the next instillment bud!! Love it!!

    The window channels look great. One thing you didn't show test fitting the glass for fitment. Your son sure loves helping out. He's going to be building cars before you know it. Getting rid of all that lead is for the best. The car is really coming around.

    • @rustbucketrestos6511
      @rustbucketrestos6511  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t have the rear glass for it. I did check measurements at a few reference points and it was spot on. Should be good to go. Now I will need to find some drawings or references for where the clips that hold in the rear window trim go. Mine were long gone on this car.

    Wow! Sure was a ‘grind’, but it’s done, and done excellently!
    Question: was the steel you used for the channels galvanized? I know you treated the seats and the pieces, but I’m just curious because I’ve seen vids of higher-end lines of GM using galvanized trim for their channels and they didn’t rust.
    Again, excellent job & looking forward to the progress on both cars!

    What grit sandpape or roloc disc
    are you using for finishing

    • @rustbucketrestos6511
      @rustbucketrestos6511  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use a 60 or 80 grit 4 1/2” flap wheel on the angle grinder, then I use 60/80 3M rolocs to finish. Flap wheels are a lot faster but not my favorite for final blending & finish, the rolocs don’t last long but you have excellent control
