I have such nostalgia for the old TH-cam culture... I started following jaclyn and a couple others in like 2013 because I wanted to learn makeup for my wedding. Jaclyn in particular really changed a lot (in my opinion for the worse). Just my opinion. She has seemed so shallow for the last few years.
Amber Gifford morphe just sucks! I’m over it. But yeah, I miss the good Ol tutorial days, before “selling & monetizing” became the purpose for videos. Greed set in, and now TH-cam tutorial artists have become a bunch of ugly, petty, bitchy, argumentative gossip Channels. I’m over that too. I usually just watch Bailey Serian now, she’s amazing, and she tells stories while doing amazing makeup.
Heidi L. And her lighting and filters make it impossible to know what anything even looks like in real life. I stopped watching her years ago for that reason.
@@zocava90 I agree with the lighting issue, but now she's in Seattle she's using more natural lighting and her videos are returning to that original "sitting with your friends on your bedroom floor playing with makeup" vibe. It's quite refreshing and I recommend checking out one of her videos from the last month.
Jaclyn used to be so calm and relaxed and casual it truly felt like a friend teaching you some tips, now she’s all “ OMG HAI GUYZ LOLOLOL HAHAHAHAHA 🤪”
The first video was during the era of actually trying to learn makeup. Nowadays, everyone either assumes you already know how or they don't want to zoom in that much because it ruins the illusion of perfection.
“Baking” is literally just creating a problem with excessive concealer, and fixing that problem with another problem by setting it with excessive powder. (Wish the old me knew this, so thankful for Robert for really showing me the truth)
Aaaand then fixing the problem of excess powder with a spray :) (I do NOT understand what is the purpose of overapplying powder then wetting the dry powder with a spray. It literally defeats the purpose of powder, it just creates another foundation-like layer)
I only set just under my eyes and that is all I need...it was almost freeing when I heard Robert say that I don’t need to us powder if I don’t need to.
Same, i hate baking especially under the eyes. I only bake my nose since i wear glasses and i need some extra help with foundation right there. Sometimes i bake only my more oily zones when i go to the party or something like that
Yes! She’s the reason I got into makeup, TH-cam, photography/videography etc. I feel like OG subscribers still see her as she used to be just matured! Despite the drama (not defending or saying anything is okay) she is still my favorite.
21:00 Oml I love how Robert noticed that he paused at a bad time and unpaused for just a second to make Jaclyn look better. It was so funny to me, but also incredibly respectable because he never wants anyone watching to laugh at anyone else. This is exactly why I love him ❤️
We dont know her personally were just going to critique her makeup constructively. 👏👏 THIS IS WHY I LOVE YOU. You're such a refreshing presence. Keep being amazing 💜
"Why do we bake?" Because women are watching makeup application for, and by, DRAG QUEENS. They're doing stage makeup for every day wear. YOU'VE BEEN LEAD ASTRAY, LADIES!
Yes! I was so confused when all these techniques for stage makeup were becoming popular, because during a show we look like nightmares close up 😂 If you bake you're going to get cake!
I love your channel Robert. No drama, no bitchiness, just genuine advice for people who want tips on makeup, using proper makeup techniques instead of jumping on an Instagram trend bandwagon. This channel is a breath of fresh air.
Burgundy lip was my go to 😂 If I wanted to go crazy, I went with purple highlighter (Purple highlighter didn't even exist at the time so I just wetted my brush and applied my MUF diamond powder, good times 😅)
I love how Robert didn't criticize her personally and just her makeup techniques! I feel like I'm more aware of where I apply my makeup because of Robert. Btw I recently tried some Korean skincare products and they are absolutely amazing! I'm so thankful for Robert's skincare videos!
@@matcha_ Robert did a video about Korean makeup and recommended some skin care products as well and yes I am well aware of his twin brother James. Thanks for reminding me
I feel like the evolution in lighting and cameras has also made a huge impact on Jaclyn's technique. I believe the makeup from her 2011 video would look extremely different if she was recording with today's technology, even if it'd still look super nice in person.
Robert is so kind that he realizes when he paused the video on jaclyns face that it wasn’t the most flattering look and he unpaused to get out of it and to a better place. ❤️
And they actually were doing videos to help people learn how to do something rather than just say what they are doing and not REALLY show or explain where or why they are doing it rather than try and just show off how well they can blend something
Money really changed her. It does for many unfortunately. The difference for me is in her look. Don't care about that. She explained more in 2011. She babbles and says a lot but doesn't really say much at the same time
I’m actually really impressed with her teaching skills and how clearly she spoke. Now, she speaks in warp speed and I can’t understand a word she says. But maybe that’s because I’m old. 🤗🤗
I have a theory for excessive product trend- 4-5 years back there was not much of product release. Now new products are coming out everyday. Beauty TH-camrs get so much product. Hence more product use- just to finish up and/or buy more.
Hey Robert, could you possibly do a video on „iconic“ hyped up makeup products of the 2010s and how they hold up today? Like hoola bronzer, orgasm blush, the naked palette etc. Love you 🥰💕
I’d love for you to do Samantha Ravndahl in this series next, her style has changed massively and I just think it’d be fascinating for you to do one on her ☺️
Loved this video Robert. You're so professional and not 'spilling tea' or 'throwing shade' and you expect the same of your followers - it's refreshing. I personally am a huge fan of light coverage makeup and I use mostly glossier but I've seen you're not a fan of some of their products 😅 I would love to see how you would do a light coverage glowy/dewy look
I absolutely love that you are demanding “better” from your viewers. More people should should do this. We can always be better. It’s one of the most beautiful qualities that we human beings possess. Thank you Robert, I see you🖤
Thank you for being so nice and respectful towards Jaclyn and explicitly saying to the viewers that it's not about Jaclyn but rather the makeup techniques over the years. Though there are still some people in the comments choosing to comment on her appearance and whether they like/dislike her, it was very nice of you to make a point that you didn't want this to turn into a "let's roast Jaclyn". You're one of the best and nicest MUA's on youtube in recent years xx
This was almost my exact 90's make-up routine just without the bronzer and highlight. It was brows ,blush, lashes and dark lipstick and liner. I actually really love the old the way the old cameras and no ring light shows the actual skin, these days everyone's skins looks abnormally perfect and you don't see exactly how the make-up looks in person. I like the realness.
I still highlight under my eyebrow. I know it’s now “out of style” and “unflattering” but it’s just something I learned at a young age and never changed
I do it too! I think it's "more important" if you have smaller eyes/eye sockets... which I do ha so I'm all about anything to brighten and make them appear larger :)
I do too, like, I feel I have to. Many influencers carve out with concealer, but I prefer a bit of a white/nude satin shadow. I’ve been doing it since 2007 and I won’t stop
I love how respectful you are Robert. I even noticed how you changed the frame it paused on so it wasn’t paused on her making a silly face. And you are very informative, thanks for your videos!
I’ve been thinking for a while now that the way Jaclyn contours her nose makes her face look broader than it is. If you take width away from your nose, it’s GOTTA GO SOMEWHERE.. it makes the cheeks look so much bigger. I know she loves contouring her nose, but as you said, she already has such a great nose.
Your comment really made me think 🧐 I’ve never thought of it that way before where you said if you take away width it has to go somewhere so it can make cheeks look bigger. It makes sense since you’re changing proportions and especially if you unbalance them by making something too contoured or highlighted.
I think she has done a lot of fillers and Botox and things like that, plus a bit of weight gain. No shade but simple contouring isn’t the only factor here.
I used to wear burgundy shades all the time, and when I went nude, I'd do a bright red eye look and purple highlighter. It was before all those red palettes began to came out. (I was so relieved to no longer have to rely on color pop shock shadows to do red looks anymore 😂)
8:27 I didn’t even realize people don’t put highlight under their brows anymore. I thought everyone still did, I have since I’ve started makeup years ago lmao
I also didn't realize people didn't do that anymore. But I was thinking about it, and it turns out, I don't anymore either. Not because I'm just that on touch with trends, but because I'm too lazy to grab a smaller brush when I'm highlighting
Robert's voice is so soothing and his humor gets to me so much that I no longer listen to podcasts at work. I either listen to his videos or the ones with James. I'm not nearly as stressed most days. Robert's also great at helping with my insomnia when Forensic Files fails me.
“Do people still put highlighter under their brow?” Me, who did it today: “Oh gosh. I don’t know, do they???” 👀👀👀😂 In all seriousness, I love your content. You’re so professional, informative, and able to critique without being an awful person. I learn so much from you, or feel confident in what I have been doing, which isn’t what “beauty gurus” do (i.e. baking and excess concealer use)
It's actually so nice to see real skin in natural lighting in these old videos. Technology might have moved forward since then but it doesn't mean you can see more detail now. On the contrary, the studio lights blur it out.
I appreciate your disclaimer 😉 Sometimes, we do need reminders that we're meant to be critiquing, not criticizing. Also, your new "do" suits you. It's unique and exciting.
I could be wrong, but I don't remember anyone really talking about contouring or highlighting back then, so she was pretty progressive for the time back in the teens.
There werent many of us but professional makeup artists were (I was at Sephora around the time that Jaclyn was at MAC and transitioning to youtube). There weren't many "contour" products on the market for consumers, so if we were selling product we were selling bronzer as contour, but professional makeup artist brands had cool matte contour products (I sold tons of Make Up For Ever back in the day).
What has changed is that all women are using drag queen makeup tricks when it's not ment to be for everyday makeup looks... Edit: I should've said most women and I'm adding to it that it can look harsh and can enhance the texture of the skin when you use an excessive amount of makeup. If my comment is insulting to you I'm sorry. You do you, I am personally not a fan of it.
*SOME It’s definitely widespread, especially among many of those w/ a larger social media presence, but there are also many people who haven’t gone that route... Thank goodness!!
Ok I should've said MOST influencers/ TH-camrs are using drag makeup tips. I miss the days where makeup was used to enhance our features not to hide them of change our face entirely.
AND? who said only drag queens can use certain makeup techniques??? why in the fuck does it bother you that WOMEN use drag queen tricks? girl gtfo with that sorry ass mindest
You are really SUCH an awesome person because you have respect for people and what they do doesn't concern you - you are just about the makeup. Very professional. Very.
edgy 14 y/o me WISHED she'd dare to wear black lipstick lmao. I only did the thick attempted-wing eyeliner, and white eyeshadow on the inner corners of my eyes. As a person who hit their teens at the start of the 00's and absolutely REFUSED to miss out on 90s grunge, ooooh yes. That dark berry lip, and the smudged black kohl that turned into raccoon eyes on oily teeny skin after about fifteen minutes... Life.
This is how you do a “Then vs Now: X TH-camr” video-Objectively , with opinions about the makeup and it’s technique then vs now. Not about what’s changed with them physically. P.S. Nadi is the lost Welsh hair triplet 😉.
elvira poetri Nadi is a TH-camr that does reviews under the name PopLuxe (same as his highlighter brand name). Nadi and Robert do a back and forth on Twitter and Robert mentioned he looks like Nadi with his hair cut.
I agree. And other than the simple eye makeup, there was nothing "natural and fresh" about the look. The 2011 video, although had bold lips, looked much fresher in my opinion.

@@asashiarangel6048 Back then there werent the thumbs to rate the video, but Stars. I think it was five.
Literally this introduction is everything. “We’re not gonna Bitch and we’re gonna learn from each other.” 🙌🏼
i think you should do tati next in this series! she’s also been on this platform for forever xxx
^^ love to see that! I love Robert and Tati both, so it would be cool to see what Robert thinks of her techniques from a professional MUA standpoint
Yes yes yes!
This is a great idea but Tati rarely does tutorials anymore. She’s more about product reviews. 😕
How TH-camrs evolve in a nutshell!
Anxiety. She's lowkey scared because she gets so much hate and fears responses.
Lysol Disinfectant Wipes Absolutely. I suffer anxiety disorder and I’m like that as well . You’re so right on .
@@doubleyouexwhyamzed it's quite sad 😣 ik how it feels... She used to be amazing in teaching how to blend eyeshadow... Miss those days
My fav JH was 2016
The first video was during the era of actually trying to learn makeup. Nowadays, everyone either assumes you already know how or they don't want to zoom in that much because it ruins the illusion of perfection.
“No, I absolutely hate it “ every time any girl cuts her bangs 😂
Omg I felt this!
So true!😂
Lmao me 2 weeks ago when I was bored
I was JUST thinking about cutting side swept bangs 😂😂
Jeannette Pierrepont-Weber don’t 😂
“Baking” is literally just creating a problem with excessive concealer, and fixing that problem with another problem by setting it with excessive powder. (Wish the old me knew this, so thankful for Robert for really showing me the truth)
Aaaand then fixing the problem of excess powder with a spray :)
(I do NOT understand what is the purpose of overapplying powder then wetting the dry powder with a spray. It literally defeats the purpose of powder, it just creates another foundation-like layer)
Unless you're a drag queen, or performing onstage under those bright, hot lights, baking is totally unnecessary.
If im in super humid places, find it helps soak up extra moisture. XD
But if im in a dryer location or normal moisture location its a hard pass
I only set just under my eyes and that is all I need...it was almost freeing when I heard Robert say that I don’t need to us powder if I don’t need to.
Same, i hate baking especially under the eyes. I only bake my nose since i wear glasses and i need some extra help with foundation right there. Sometimes i bake only my more oily zones when i go to the party or something like that
Young Jaclyn was giving me major Audrina from The Hills vibes
Baby jaclyn is so sweet and innocent. Felt no nostalgic watching. She taught me everything back in the day!
Oops *so nostalgic lol :)
Yes! She’s the reason I got into makeup, TH-cam, photography/videography etc. I feel like OG subscribers still see her as she used to be just matured! Despite the drama (not defending or saying anything is okay) she is still my favorite.
and she taught you well, your makeup in your profile pic looks gorgeous
Saaaame! She was one of the first beauty you tubers I ever followed
Do you feel like she’s still genuine? I used to follow her but had to unsubscribe because I just can’t with her anymore. 🤷🏼♀️
21:00 Oml I love how Robert noticed that he paused at a bad time and unpaused for just a second to make Jaclyn look better. It was so funny to me, but also incredibly respectable because he never wants anyone watching to laugh at anyone else. This is exactly why I love him ❤️
Robert is the king of kindness 💕
I didn't even noticed. Sweety!
So nice that he shows her this kindness and doesn’t think twice

“I wanna go crazy. Give me a burgundy lip!” 😆
I laughed so hard 🤣
Came for this comment. That had me cracking up!
Burgundy lip was my go to 😂
If I wanted to go crazy, I went with purple highlighter (Purple highlighter didn't even exist at the time so I just wetted my brush and applied my MUF diamond powder, good times 😅)
I love how Robert didn't criticize her personally and just her makeup techniques! I feel like I'm more aware of where I apply my makeup because of Robert. Btw I recently tried some Korean skincare products and they are absolutely amazing! I'm so thankful for Robert's skincare videos!
Do you mean James's skincare videos? Robert mainly sticks to makeup. James Welsh, Robert's twin, does the skincare videos. 😂

Thank you! I think we all, as humans naturally do it, sometimes I have to think before I speak also!
Robert Welsh I need to learn that from you - how to think before you speak. Sometimes I just forget that.
That quiet little shoulder shimmy you did at 13:24 was soo cute!
2011 when beauty guru drama wasn’t really a thing ☹️😒 also it wasn’t all about getting a brand deal and doing advertisements
And they actually were doing videos to help people learn how to do something rather than just say what they are doing and not REALLY show or explain where or why they are doing it rather than try and just show off how well they can blend something
Camille Moyer excatly man
Money really changed her.
Sussex Sandra tbh I think she developed anxiety 😢she been through a lot of social media bullying

It’s definitely the anxiety . I suffer major anxiety and I’m the same . At least it’s not James Charles speed lol
Jessica Reeves I do the same thing when I’m nervous but hearing someone else speak in the same way makes me so anxious!
Diana M agreed ! Same here
I have a theory for excessive product trend- 4-5 years back there was not much of product release. Now new products are coming out everyday. Beauty TH-camrs get so much product. Hence more product use- just to finish up and/or buy more.
You've got the most adorable laugh.

Hey Robert, could you possibly do a video on „iconic“ hyped up makeup products of the 2010s and how they hold up today? Like hoola bronzer, orgasm blush, the naked palette etc.
Love you 🥰💕
Ooo good idea
Def great idea 💖💖

Loved this video Robert. You're so professional and not 'spilling tea' or 'throwing shade' and you expect the same of your followers - it's refreshing. I personally am a huge fan of light coverage makeup and I use mostly glossier but I've seen you're not a fan of some of their products 😅 I would love to see how you would do a light coverage glowy/dewy look
I don't mean this to be rude at all, but her voice is so different now. Like WOW.
k3nnny b0y she likes to be loud and obnoxious in my opinion.
She seems to talk faster now too? She’s probably anxious.. :(
she's alot more comfy in front of the camera and as someone with anxiety sometimes we talk loud and fast to make up for it if that makes sense
how is saying something is different being rude? did you have a rude thought while you said it
I agree. She talks so fast now. It gives me secondhand anxiety.

Yes! I found her about 4 years ago and she's one of the few that I still watch consistently. Her personality is so refreshing.
Yes so good!! Just watch out for major eff bombs 😅
I just cannot say enough how refreshing Robert is. His kindness is unparalleled. Lol
When you said no I absolutely hate it I died 😭😂😭😂

Me too! I ugly laugh/snorted. Especially since I was thinking it didn’t look like a bad effort at all.
I still highlight under my eyebrow. I know it’s now “out of style” and “unflattering” but it’s just something I learned at a young age and never changed
I do it to because it just feels weird so not do it 😂😂
I do it too! I think it's "more important" if you have smaller eyes/eye sockets... which I do ha so I'm all about anything to brighten and make them appear larger :)
I didn't even know it's out of style rn lol wtf
What do people do now? I’ve always highlighted and didn’t know it was an option not to. That’s kind of like skipping the lid to me, lol
I do too, like, I feel I have to. Many influencers carve out with concealer, but I prefer a bit of a white/nude satin shadow. I’ve been doing it since 2007 and I won’t stop
"did i cut my own hair? yeah
do i really like it? no, i absolutely hate it, but * nervous laughter * "
that was such a big mood

I love how respectful you are Robert. I even noticed how you changed the frame it paused on so it wasn’t paused on her making a silly face. And you are very informative, thanks for your videos!
I really miss old school TH-cam makeup. When it was all about education, not pushing a product.
No shade but simple contouring isn’t the only factor here.
lip fillers and fillers on the face never goes away and slowly it leaks to other parts of the face and widens your face. :(
@@erika-sf6ei it does go away & leaves stretched out skin behind to sag & cause this moon face. Its called "Filler Fatigue".

“I wanna go crazy give me a burgundy lip” 😂😂😂😂😂
*looks at all of my burgundy lip shades compared to the two nudes I own*
I used to wear burgundy shades all the time, and when I went nude, I'd do a bright red eye look and purple highlighter.
Plenty of people do. I see tutorials where people do it. And if you like it, do it.

In all seriousness, I love your content. You’re so professional, informative, and able to critique without being an awful person. I learn so much from you, or feel confident in what I have been doing, which isn’t what “beauty gurus” do (i.e. baking and excess concealer use)
That throwback video was so wholesome and I think the look would work today without looking dated. I'm looking forward to more then vs now videos!
They were. It became more popular in the late 00s because of celebs like Halle Berry and JLo.

*SOME
It’s definitely widespread, especially among many of those w/ a larger social media presence, but there are also many people who haven’t gone that route...
