- The complete Times Square New Year's Eve 2024 Countdown. This annual tradition greets the New Year with a ball drop and started in 1907 to ring in the New Year of 1908 from the top of One Times Square. The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, weights 11,875 pounds, and is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystals that vary in size. Confetti is also sprinkled shortly after the countdown.

Don’t care what anyone says. This tradition always brings me to tears. And i prefer it over the super flashy firework shows. And what else can such a crowded city do? In case you forgot, the State of New York has banned fireworks.
That never stops the people a few streets away from my family's apartment building from using fireworks before, during, and after Independence Day. It's annoying! 😅
