    Everyone is talking shit in these comments but I doubt any of them have video of them hand cutting a bevel because it’s hard. This is a really good freehand bevel.

    • @haugndog
      @haugndog  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly!! My point was just that it can be done by hand without all the high dollar equipment!!! Not saying it was perfect but useable for the situation.

      @@haugndog It saves grinding time so what's not to like? I'm no pipeliner (due to bad back and shoulder) but I cut many tons of pipe coupons for the welding school where I ran the toolroom and your freehand cuts are excellent!

      Blades 22 I appreciate that Blades! I will go a few years in between fitting up, which was the case here! It had probably been 3-4 years. The point is you don’t have to own all the high dollar bevelers to cut a pipe bevel.

    When I started this trade in the 70's My boss gave us a ball peen, a file and a cutting torch. Most people today lost this skill. Other than my eyes are older I can still cut, just a few more beaver teeth.

    I guess this is an old school torch hand style, as a Pipefitter I would just cut it with a bandsaw, or cutting disk, and then bevel it with a grinder. He is still going to have to clean it up with a grinder anyway to prep it to fit up and weld it out.

      shaufik hidayat you're welcome. I may not be perfect at it, but the point is that you can do it with a cutting torch. Sometimes I go years in between fitting pipe so the little I do doesn't warrant the investment of a beveling tool.
      Rigid recently came out with a cutter head that clamps on the end of the pipe and rotates around the pipe. It will do from 4" up and I think the cost may be around $2k.

      Nikolaos Pizanias i typically only deal sch 40. It is more about not having to invest in bevel cutting tooling. Especially when you only have a hand full of cuts to do. Now there are cool metal cutting saws so you get a square cut, and beveling tool cutters that are reasonably priced. If I were doing heavy production I would invest in the tooling.

    • @shannonhaugen8890
      @shannonhaugen8890 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The old Bosch Carborundum chop saws that I used years ago to fit pipe couldn't cut a square cut to save your life! They where always out a few degrees and it would take 20 plus minutes to grind an end up square, confirm the overall length, grind your bevel, landing and deburr and tack on the fitting. The method in this video, I was able to do the same joint in 10 minutes with the fitting tacked on It. I have had a lot of plumbers I worked with say you can't flame cut a bevel on a pipe, well here is the proof.
      We also had a fab shop with a 24" 480v production chop saw that would cut a better end, but in the shop we used a large high CFM air bevel'er that used an internal mandrel to position the tool and pipe and it would do the facing, beveling and de-burring in one process. we would normally cut the pipe about 3/8 long to allow for this process. Again this is not an inexpensive option out in the field.

    • @haugndog

      Steve, that would be a good Visio and it brings back a memory of one I did Back in the day and wish I had a video of it. It was on a school project rebuild caused from the 89’ Loma Prieta earthquake out here in California. I had a underground tie in of a 6” HDPE new gas system to an existing steel gas system that I was nervous about. The transition fitting on the HDPE poly pipe was fused on already and the existing steel, natural gas system had a weld cap on it that had to be cut off to drop the poly down and make the connection. Had my welder onsite with me and ran the scenarios by him, I was concerned I would cut it to short! His comment was, no problem, “cut a pup and drop that in!” Which helped ease the anxiety I already had about cutting the cap off a live natural gas system!
      I did my layout, drilled a hole in the cap and tested my purge to ensure it was safe, made the cut and tapped my landings on, cleaned it up with my peanut grinder and swung the new system into place and, it was one of my proudest moments of my then young career, it fit! No pup piece needed! Welder did his magic and we put it back into service.
      I hauled that old 6” weld cap around for a few decades! I wish I still had it, I’d make a piece of art out of it and pass it down to my kids.
      God bless and be safe out there.

      Luke P. My point is to show how simple it can be to "flame cut a bevel" without all the expensive tools. If all I did was fit pipe, it would make sense, but for a few days here and there on a project, through out a year, I do just fine the old school way.

      +ralphgomez78 Ralph, I'm not sure what a metabo is, maybe you can explain.I can get a really clean bevel on larger pipe. Especially if I get a chance to stay out in the field and get a few warm up cuts in. Most of my stuff is sch 40 medium pressure gas, so it doesn't require x-rayed welds. My welders do not have a problem with minor imperfections. I was taught by an old timer back in the early 90's and found it to be a lot faster than hand beveling or an air beveler. Now that there are metal cutting chop saws instead of old school chop saws the cuts are much closer to being square prior to hand grinding.

      +Shannon Haugen thata cool man a metabo is like a chop saw but for a 6" grinder the disc is only 16th wide great for cutting pipe but this could be useful when you get up to bigger bore pipe especially if you can get a smooth cut.

      Ma'am my point was that it is easily possible to hand flame cut your bevel WITHOUT A MACHINE OR JIG.

      I'w thinking the beveler fitters in your shop would be challenged in the field while the field hands could turn the crank or push the button just fine in your shop.
      But that won't happen. It's the money thing.
