Welcome to the good side of TH-cam ✨
Really!
Never seen one of these before. How wonderful! 🙂
A pleasure
viva europa!!!
It's basically just an ancient melodica.
The bellows have a dual-purpose of fanning that fire this man is putting off.

The regal is small, but MIGHTY! And a beutifully played canzone. Thanks!
Thank you!
Indeed well played sir. And I don't agree with kjamison about the kazoo connection. But then, all organs, no matter the type are related to all woodwinds and horns, so there is something there. I do understand why he made that statement, but it is from a mechanical standpoint wrong, as you well know. Still you have a very nice and fun instrument there.
My soul is swirling listening to this
Hassler is an underrated composer. I remember first hearing any music by him in college, oh, 55 years ago, and being impressed. Thanks for choosing a work by him for this demonstration and our entertainment.
Follow up Jan Katzschke. He recorded much more Hassler on the harpsichord.
Which Hassler compositions do you recommend listening to?
I'm 36 and and this masterpiece sounds epic! First time ever hearing this and I love it!
I was transported back to the medieval era. I thought it was wonderful. Thank you very much.
Imagine the inventor still living to this day, and see his or hers invention be used like that in the present time 😊👍
Might as well be an argument about God versus humanity. What a waste. Fortunately, the former has long expired and the other is on the process of irreversible decay.
@@sunkenindeafGod is.
@@sunkenindeafHm. I wonder if the latter might be connected to the supposed former?
Anyway, what is the connection to the original comment?
@@tgbluewolfQuite. Ludicrous. One does wonder why such a person exists. God knows, I suppose! 😂
This is probably a very modern instrument but based on a very old principle.
The music played is typical of the instrument's era. Very nice well played and so serene to the mind. As for the inventor of the instrument I would have added a foot pedal that would raise both bellows by foot. Never seen this instrument before but I've heard it's sound somewhere along the line of my life. Nice, thank you.
I have a somewhat similar instrument, but the primary bellows has a spring pushing it open, and two foot-operated bellows draw air from it. My instrument is not so compact, however.
...the reason there are TWO bellows- is to provide an UNINTERRUPTED supply of air...
this is one of the earliest ancestors of the Grand Orgue, revised to fit the needs of rennaissance society, and can be played with a clavecin.
The hand-handled bellows was an easy ane really effective way to have the job done without any mechanical problem, and this solution is older than the 13th century. go see "la dame à la licorne", painted in 1200+/- ; this is also a way to engage the participation of auditors.
Last, i want you to notice several things : he can be easily moved, even without oil. A lady can carry this. The mor you add...
Plus, because it's a renaissance era instrument, it's not only for the richs. Chifonies are commons, same for rebecs, violas, etc, etc... Musicians are one of the last part of society to access sedentarity.
The first Casio keyboard 👍🏼👍🏼🎶
@@user-kq1ng9ep2g They did think of pedals to lift the bellows, but those instruments, called pump organs, are more expensive, cumbersome, and prone to mechanical failure.
Wow, it's tuned close to the just intonation, and it sounds awesome
The important keys have just major tierces and slightly out of tune fifth. That makes it sound just.....
@@MarcusStahl pythagorician scales ? untempered, at least...
can i try to guess his age ? i think he is from 1550 +/- ???
Which "just intonation"? That's a big category of tuning systems, not a single tuning system
@@SamChaneyProductions in this case 5-limit ji, but the system used is quarter-comma meantone
Amazing. If you study Synthesizer they say thw noise is "always there" and when you press a key you are "allowing the sound through". This is the literal predecessor and embodiment of that idea
What’s more impressive is how much music you can make with that limited a keyboard.
What a bizarre and delightful instrument! A miniature organ run by what are basically forge bellows that require a second person to operate? I love it!
In the old days, this second person was called the Calcant.
A small organ requires only one Calcant, but it's not the same as large church organs. In those cases, the organist on duty needs the assistance of a whole team of calcants. Unfortunately, during Sunday services, they are often still intoxicated from the night before.
1 note on that thing is grating. A full chord is magical.
I have never heard of this instrument. Very beautiful playing.
Herzlichen Dank!
Wspaniały ! Taki niewielki instrument a tak silny i wyrazisty dźwięk .❤😊
What do the spaniards have to do with anything
@@isocarboxazidnothing to do with spaniards, this is in polish, talking about how small yet mighty this instrument is
@@isocarboxazidthe first word means "great" or "excellent". Nothing to do with Spaniards
Beautiful, impractical, astonishing and ridiculous. I have never seen this instrument before.
How is it impractical?
@@fennecbesixdouze1794 Can you imagine trying to play it alone?
I can see an upgrade where you use your feet to elevate the bellows.😊
It has to be said, that the regal throughout its history is reported to be controversal. As it obviously is in our time.
As a gearhead I can see a few ways to raise the bellows with one's feet. As sombody who enjoys beauty, yes this really nice.
That was beautiful! It's like history came alive, amazing!
After 2 minutes I took a deep deep breath... another metrum, beauty, dignity - a kind of timeless heartbeat.
Thank you for this mood, Sir !
Beautifull instrument (and playing). I wish so badly I had enough to buy myself one !
Whoever is flipping the bellows is doing a tremendous job wow.
Job security for that person!
Ausgezeichnet, wunderbar, wunderschön, verwundert, fabelhaft
Danke TH-cam so etwas
bezauberndes sehen und

@@MarcusStahl,
Wunderbar!
That's pretty cool. So much sound from a relatively small footprint.
🌻🇧🇷🌻
A melodion with bellows, brilliant. Great Performance. 😊
What a majestic sound! Just like the trumpet stop of a grand organ!
What a great sound!
It's very relaxing to watch the bellows gently fall
One can picture this being played at some regal dinner/event...........really marvellous !
Which is one explanation for the term REGAL
Brilliant, no computers or electronic stuff to go wrong. Just good old mechanics & common sense. It also sounds more natural. Thank you.
...Great!..... Huge sound from such a small instrument, and of excellent quality.
I’ve never seen or heard of one of these. What wonderful minds people had to come up with this portable organ.. The sound is pretty incredible for the size of the instrument.. Thank you for showing ,and playing it..
Wow what a beautiful instrument and talented musician 👏
Beautiful playing.
Maravilloso! Great! Wunderbar! I can't speak!
I can't believe how good it sounds. Fantastic job on that instrument.
That was fantastic!! I'm already in love with the harmonics in music from this era since forever, but to hear it from this instrument seems to make it come alive even more! ❤
That deserves to played in a room with a lot of reverb. Well done! Excellent instrument!
What an intriguing instrument! 👏✨
Gracias.
Majestuosa interpretación.
Hermosa música.
Maravilloso instrumento.
Really nice sound! I'm assuming it's a reed organ of some sort, but an explanation of its workings would be deeply appreciated.
The regal uses a 'beating' reed, as found on some pipe organs, rather than a 'free' reed, as found on later reed organs, accordions, and harmonicas. Otherwise, it has a fairly simple organ action, with the bellows, valves, and pallets.
@@Lucius1958, yeah thank you!
now we don't see the reed pipes.
are they hidden under the table or even in it ? where are the pipes .
@@keescanalfp5143 The regal doesn't have real pipes like organ reeds have, it is just the beating reed in the wooden holder with a channel in the holder to let the sound escape, the wind chest is directly behind the keyboard and the reeds are normally fitted onto the wind chest in a horizontal position.
Some regals may have a very short sort of resonator made of wood or metal, but I have also seen examples without them, not sure if this one has such or not. Maybe the builder can explain.
What I describe here is based on what I have seen of various regals shown here on YT, I believe Marcus does have videos where he actually makes the reeds.
@@Tom-Lahaye,
thank you very much ! now i see that we need not look for pipes or resonators .
it's miraculous how even the deep C, eight feet in labial language, sounds so well in the room .

Beautiful!!! A harpsichorgan!
Schöne Musik,tolles Instrument,wunderbarer Vortrag!👍👏
Okay....this instrument is completely new to me. Searched historical information about it, it was mainly around in the 14th/15th century. Still, such a mighty sound for such a small instrument, lovely!
¡Maravilloso! 🌨️
It's like a portative organ in a different orientation. Very cool. Lovely sound.
Micro organ! A very authentical music! Excellent👍❗💗
Stunning performance and stunning instrument!
Je ne connaissais pas cet instrument, incroyable ❤
I've seen pictures of this instrument and heard recordings. Never realized until this video that it operated on gravity. Amazing sound and well-played too!
Wunderbares Instrument und Spiel!
I had never seen one of these but what a strong sound !!
Such a clean cool sound!
Beautiful instrument and music. It reminds me some early Queen musics.
STUNNING. Thank you, from another keyboardist. 🙏🙏🙏
Wowwww..... it's an awesome instrument!!!! Glad to see it still being played today!!!!!
Excellent. Great volume for such size. Rich chords. Well done.
What a beautiful portable organ! Thanks for sharing this.
Haßler is great! I have never heared a bad or mediocre piece by him, everything is fine. And you delight us with excellent playing 🙂
Très belle morceau.❤
From Rwanda Africa 🌍
Absolutely delightful ! Prächtig! *: D*
He should have a little stationary bike that he can use to lift the bellows back into place with. That would be so amazing.
I love the melody. I'm glad they eventually invented the piano.
yeah haha !
a totally different cup of tea .
Wunderbar!
What a cool instrument! Never saw (or noticed) it before.
That beat went fucking hard, Grandmaster Jan Katzschke, Regal slayed that shit!
Combo organ, XVII. Centuries...
So it's basically a reed organ, but with much bigger weighted bellows, very cool.
I can't tell you how awesome this is 😊
Very cool and unique instrument, and very well played. Awesome.
Ah a two person squeeze box harmonica .Delightful

What a lovely instrument; both its look and sound. Nicely played too 👍
Beautiful. It sounds like a consort of crumhorns ushering in Spring, or something even better.
