      Good to see a bit of Dilemma love on TH-cam! It's not even the worst Sixth Doctor story, never mind the all time worst Classic Series one. It's a colourful, vibrant, energetic, extremely quotable, planet-hopping epic, and Sixie has completely stabilised by the end of it. Is it perfect? No. But it's certainly completely undeserving of the vitriol fandom spits at it.

    #154 The Dominators? This story is sadly underrated! It had the ambition to tackle a serious contemporary theme that is still relevant. And was also set on an alien planet. Come on fans , why not celebrate imagination rather than technical shortcomings ie The Quarks.

      The Dominators is pretty dreadful. It's one of the most boring things ever put on TV. Aside from some nice Doctor/Jamie moments, hardly anything actually happens. Five parts full of two faux-aggro aliens bickering like a married couple.

      I don't think there's much imagination involved - called the alien baddies the Dominators for example! I think it's disliked mainly because it's dull and repetitive. There also the fact that mid-Vietnam War here is a Dr Who story arguably mocking the anti-war movement. But mainly it's dull.

And did you also notice that all Tom Baker stories that were ranked worse than rank #119, were from seasons 15-18? This just shows how great the Letts and Hinchcliffe eras really were. I prefer a few stories over "Androzani". These especially: Genesis of the Daleks, City of Death, Talons of Weng-Chiang, Seeds of Doom, and Inferno. But I do feel that Robert Holmes was probably the best writer of the series, classic and modern. I think he understood best what worked and what didn't work for the show. Just his dialogue alone for example. His black humor and wit was so wonderful.

      Fans are much more critical of Tom Baker these days, likely because it’s been so long since he was playing Dr. Who and there isn’t as much emotional connection to his era. I do remember that back in the 1980s, he WAS Dr. Who, and hardly any Americans would even look at the other actors.

    • @jasongaylor2232
      @jasongaylor2232 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@DTM-Books I can understand being critical of the lack of consistency towards the end of his era but Tom Baker is still THE definitive Doctor in my view. And I don't think I'm alone in thinking that. Even in recent polling over the last decade or so, Tom has won best doctor the majority of the time over Tennant - who I feel is overrated by primarily fangirls who have seen little to none of the classic series.
      Now saying all that, I think Jon Pertwee's era is the most consistent from start to finish. So many great stories. Many with important social commentary. Letts really moved it away from being a children's show in the 60's to being more grownup fare in the 1970's that addressed some serious issues. To be honest, I really love all 70's Doctor Who up til the 16th "Key to Time" season around 1978. After that there's a major lack of consistency with the program.

      @Jack The Film Fanatic Troughton is horribly overrated and there is a clear sign of laziness, with stories being stretched out, ideas reused, and the endless base under siege
      There's a good reason that ratings plunged during the second doctors era
      And people forget that. It doesn't get that low again until the late 80s

    • @alexzander4426
      @alexzander4426 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My problem with Kinda is that the main villain turns into a babbling, unthreatening child. He has that amazing like in part 1: “I have the power of life and death over all of you!” And then plays with children’s toys which are somehow on this highly advanced research station. That and also the psychedelic scenes have absolutely no purpose. We don’t know who the couple playing chess are because it’s irrelevant. We don’t need to have Tegan be in a conversation with herself, because it’s irrelevant. I just think it’s too much for show and doesn’t focus on its story / characters enough.

    Thanks, Josh, for putting this together. It must have been a mammoth undertaking, so kudos!
    Couple of general observations:
    It's testament to Terrance Dicks' talent as a writer that his hastily-written Horror of Fang Rock is (rightly) so well-regarded. That said, was his Five Doctors _really_ the 12th best story of the entire Classic Era? I wouldn't say so. Yes, it's the best multi-Doctor story, and I'd have it in my Top 40, but I think the nostalgia factor - all those Doctors, companions and villains on screen - has pushed it too far up the list.
    I'm pretty much agreed otherwise, although I think the nostalgia factor - Tom's departure - has given Logopolis a ratings boost, too. Not that it's bad, but (e.g.) Greatest Show in the Galaxy, which lags one place behind Logopolis, is IMHO a much better story in almost every way.

    I've been tracking Doctor Who story rankings since the DWM published list in 2009 and it's been interesting to compare your 2019 poll with prior lists. Notably, your results are slightly more favorable to the 2nd and 7th Doctors' stories than the average, though the reputedly 'worst' stories didn't move much from the bottom slots.
    A few things jumped out. The Hartnell story "The Crusade" appears deeply discounted in this result compared to most (a story the Radio Times editors rated an "A"). The release of "The Macra Terror" and "The Faceless Ones" seems to have boosted audience appreciation of these stories considerably, just as the release of "The Enemy of the World" improved poll rankings for that story.
    On a more personal note, it's nice to see "The Invasion" well appreciated in this poll, as it is one of my all time favorite stories.
    I still consider "Timelash" to be worse than "The Twin Dilemma", whatever the polls may say ;)

      Yea, there was a 1998 poll, a 2009 poll and a 2014 poll. Josh Snares got tired of waiting so went f*ck it DWM, ill do it myself! Josh Snare's polls are actually very accurate, they correlate with the general consensus, but the early DWM polls were all over the place and don't correlate with general consensus because back in 1998 as said in an article, people mostly had a memory to go back on. In early DWM polls they ranked Last of the Timelords above The War Games, Evil of the Daleks above the War Games etc.

    Concerning the Twin Dilemma - admittedly it's a bit gaudy but in all honesty some of these low rankers would still be higher than some of the stories 2005+ - it would be interesting to see every story ranked whether 'new who' and 'classic who' then we can definitively see what is the true carbuncle of stories. I would happily watch and enjoy The Twin Dilemma over such flummery as Love and Monsters, Rings of Akhaten, Partners in Crime and Victory of the Daleks to name but a few as quite frankly these made my toes curl as Doctor Who became 'something for the children' which it is not and should never be classed as such. This would be a monumental task but very interesting indeed something for your talents Mr Snares should you have a couple of thousand hours. Thoroughly enjoyed this by the way - from a who fan since 1979 - thank you !! Inferno is still my number one Who story with Ambassadors a close second - love series 7 and when Liz tips over into the weir in this story is potentially one of the best cliffhangers in the series !

    Thanks, Josh. Great fun! That was a lot of work, and it's appreciated. I got curious, so based on your rankings, I calculated Average Rank for each Doctor. The results were interesting. This is not a ranking of favorite Doctor, but it is a ranking of the Doctor involved in the best series. Results (best avg rank to worst avg rank): Pertwee (62.2), Troughton (64.2), T. Baker (77.5), McCoy (81.8), Hartnell (87), Davison (88.4), McGann (101), C. Baker (103.3).

    • @christopheralthouse6378
      @christopheralthouse6378 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tbf, McGann only had two televised outings...seeing as this poll ranks televised outings only and he has so few of them, it really hardly seems fair to compare him in such a way to the other Classic Who doctors that had full on-screen eras...
      Now, if one were to include audio outings in the rankings, then Paul McGann would be more accurately ranked against all of the others, as his audio era is VAST, with new adventures still being released by Big Finish to this day!

    • @teej0813
      @teej0813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Of course. And if audio recordings were included, Colin Baker would also rank much higher due to the success of his Big Finish work. But my calculations were based solely on Josh's poll of series. To be clear, this isn't a ranking of Doctors per se. It's a ranking of series for each Doctor. Pertwee isn't my favorite Classic Doctor, but I do think his Unit Era stories, as a collection, were generally better than any other Doctor's collection of stories. So in general, I agree with Josh's poll.

    Episodes that are only ruined because of budget problems and design problems, such as underworld, Warriors of the deep, and invasion of the dinosaurs, they're all in like my top 100. I watch enough Blake 7 to know that just because something has bad design or budget problems doesn't mean it's a bad episode. For me invasion of time is far worse than Underworld. For me I don't think there's a single bad story in season 21 that stars Peter Davison and honestly Invasion the dinosaurs has of cracking good plot. So those three stories are definitely ones that I like that everyone else seems not like
