  • @TheElderBlotch
    @TheElderBlotch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    The Hinchcliffe and Holmes collaboration gave way to a golden era of the show, rivalled only by Letts and Dicks in my opinion. As for my own Top Ten, it's nothing special but full of Hinchcliffes, since I'm a sucker for Gothic horror-
    1: The Talons Of Weng-Chiang
    2: Pyramids Of Mars
    3: The Seeds Of Doom
    4: Genesis Of The Daleks
    5: The Robots Of Death
    6: The Ark In Space
    7: The Deadly Assassin
    8: Horror Of Fang Rock
    9: City Of Death
    10: Terror Of The Zygons
    Like I said, a predictable list but the highest 4 are in my Top Ten DW eps of all time, Baker is a legend, and it's those three earliest seasons of him, where his performance is brilliantly brooding yet alien and maniacal, that are just riveting television and absolutely iconic.

    • @julieeverett7442
      @julieeverett7442 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd take out horror of fang rock, and put in image of the fendahl. but great list!

    • @jasondancaster3296
      @jasondancaster3296 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thoroughly agree with your observations and your top 5 is bang on target. I'd exchange 'Deadly Assassin' and 'City of Death' (just don't like that one, annoying and completely over-rated imo) with 'The Brain of Morbius' and 'Hand of Fear' - 'The Sunmakers' and 'Stones of Blood' and 'Planet of Evil' making a perfect 13.

      Me too mate. It’s my 3rd fav of the entire show, behind Talons and Genesis (Tom has six stories in my top ten). I kinda hear people’s criticisms about Revenge, but I just love the script, and the look of the story on screen.

    • @geekdetritus5503
      @geekdetritus5503 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I honestly think its criticism comes from the era that it's in. If you compare it to later 4th Doctor stories (or some of the 80's Who) it is very good, but when you put it in the same season as Ark in Space, and sandwich it between Genesis of the Daleks, and Terror of the Zygons, it does seem to stick out as being not as good, as those.
      Much like the 2nd Doctor era, not having all that many bad episodes, so while there are episodes that are not as good during his run, many of his lesser episodes are still better than (I hate to do it, but it is true) a lot of the 6th Doctors run. (I do love Colin Baker, but he did seem to have a lot of dull episodes.... including the one with the 2nd)

    So glad Horror of Fang Rock and Stones of Blood are so high, such good serials that I feel we’re overshadowed.
    No bad costumes, no bad acting. Stones of Blood had a great mystery behind it, and was such an adventure The small english countryside was such a eerie feeling, and the sets were actually really good and didn’t feel cheap.
    I grew up watching Doctor Who on ABC during the early 00’s in Australia and Stones of Blood always stuck with me as a gripping episode ugh. Wish Modern Who could have a good episode where there’s more than one threat and layers as the story unfolds.

      It HAS to be! That story is regarded as one of the TRUE GREATS of Classic Who...if not the show's BEST serial! 😁
      While 5th Doctor haters do exist (sadly), it isn't even for his departure that it rates so highly...this is the ONE and ONLY story where Peter Davidson gets to take center stage and truly BE The Doctor...and it shows that when given the chance, he goes from strength to strength! There's nothing really uncharacteristic about his Doctor, he's still played as vulnerable and not-always-certain, however, he is faced with impossible stakes in a situation where there is NO right answer to the central problem at hand, everyone is against him...hell, the closest thing he has to an ally is Sharez Jek and he's considered the main villian! The only thing The Doctor can do is save Peri...and even as it becomes more and more obvious that he himself won't make it, he stops at NOTHING to achieve this one and only goal.
      Suitably bleak and amazingly epic, "The Caves of Androzani" simply CANNOT take any spot other than No. 1...👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😁

But honestly, I don't really agree with how low some of the Williams' era stories are rated. I get a kick out of a lot of them, even if some are more humurous than others. 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang', my personal Fourth Doctor favourite story (in fact, possibly my favourite Who story ever) comes in at #4 and I'm happy with that. In fact, I'm happy with the whole Top 10 (actually, 11 onwards), some of Who's best ever stories and my personal favourites.
    A little surprised that 'The Creature from the Pit' comes in at #38 and not bottom considering some of the flack it's got over the years but hey, I'm fine with that. :)

    I think I'd give Terror of the Zygons the top spot. I still can't get over how good the Zygon costumes are, and the atmosphere is phenomenal. What an absolute TREAT. Favourite monsters to this day.

    The likes and dislikes of the Doctor Who fandom utterly baffle me. Ark, Zygons and Android Invasion are totally average stories, and Invasion of Time should've been dead last just for being based around a continuity error, having terrible actors, and insulting Leela's character.

    • @Yetaxa
      @Yetaxa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zygons is a classic so I can't agree there
      But I agree on the others
      Ark in space on my last watch really shocked me. Terribly written, terribly acted, bad effects even for the time, and Harry is at his insufferable worst
      I sometimes think revenge might actually be better
      Android invasion I always thought wasn't well liked anyway

    usually, i'd vastly disagree on the idea that killing off a character would upset younger viewers, but in this case, i'd make an exception, because killing off sarah jane would have robbed us of her future in K9 and Company, the five doctors, those big finish audios, 21st century who, and the sarah jane adventures.

    This is one of those lists where I can pretty much agree with the top 10. It's the ones lower that strike me as odd. I would never have thought Keeper of Traken would be that high, and Nimon would be that low. I feel like Shada's reputation is what gave it it's spot more than anything else.

    • @FenrirInFlowers
      @FenrirInFlowers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The top 10 is something that most fans would pretty much agree with overall. After that personal opinion varies widely, so I think we all find some of those rankings shocking. I think that you underestimate the love for Douglas Adams as a writer when talking about Shada. One of the reasons I love the Shada story so much is how well his humor and wit meshed with Tom Baker's performance. For example, lots of us found the Doctor trying to play dead with the computer to be pure gold. Even with all the humor, the story itself was solid with enjoyable twists. I dig the concept of the Time Lords having a hidden prison planet. There's interesting potential and mythos in that. Great cast in the episode. I love Shada for lots of the same reasons that I love City of Death.

      What? Leaisure Hive is the best-looking Series 18 serial after Logopolis. It has great direction, some of the best in Tom Baker years.
      Episode 1 cliffhanger is also one of the best in Classc Who.
      LH has a weak ending, but so does Genesis and no one complaining about that one. It still belongs in top 10 Baker stories.

    • @TheKandyman

    I watched ALL of these between 1979 and 1981 when they came to America. I was 13-15 at the time. Frankly, there were no true misses in these 7 seasons, only some episodes were poorly planned, lamely scripted, and rarely--badly acted. Tom Baker's run had a wide variety of great premises and lively design. I agree with the bottom of this list more than the top, but they are difficult to pick from. His first 4 seasons were close to perfect, his last three were vacillating between great episodes and boring/campy ones. The one I always found disappointing to rewatch was indeed UNDERWORLD; all the worst elements came into play during that show, combining to make a truly lackluster (but not bad) Doctor Who serial. Earlier Who wasn't as good, later Who became more campy or distrait. If you had lived through the late-70s and early-80s of American TV, you would understand why Doctor Who became a titanic underground cult in the USA. I still look back at the Baker era and think it is better than most all TV made since.

      I think it deserved a place in the top 10, and it is one of my favourite stories, but I agree its a bit overrated. If I was doing this as a personal ranking, I would probably have put City of Death, Pyramids of Mars, or even Terror of the Zygons in the top spot.
