My German grandmother made a wonderful version of stollen every Christmas. It’s like a sweet dessert bread with candied fruit inside. She covered it heavily with a white icing and put festive green and red sprinkles on top!
There is a German shopping village located in Huntington Beach, CA (called Old World) and we like to go up there a couple weeks before Christmas and get Stollen, mustards, sausage and all. We like to have the Stollen as a dessert after Christmas dinner. Excellent with a bourbon on the side as the two really complement each other. In the morning I like to toast a slice of it with a little butter spread on top. Trader Joe’s has some pretty good Stollen as well.
Butter Stollen does not have the marzipan in the center. I am not a big fan of marzipan, so I always get a butter Stollen. Here in Germany they are so good. The best way to describe is correct, it is fruit bread, not cake.

I have only seen the marzipan kind at the German village area where I live in Southern California, or for that matter in the markets this time of year. I would like to try it! What is exactly in the butter filling to keep it from going bad unrefrigerated? Is it a butter-sugar filling? It sounds a bit like this Mexican sweet bread that has a sugar-butter spread on top but not kept refrigerated.
There is no filling in Butter Stollen it is made with a lot of butter.... it is called that to make you aware it does not have marzipan in it. A stollen filled with marzipan is called Edel Marzipan. And just like any other country in the world...different regions will have different taste. One area may traditionally have more cinnamon while another area barely uses any. Just like chili back home in the US...there is no ONE recipe. And of course, like everywhere else, nobody made it better than your grandma!

The Holiday Hotel Christmas Hop was ALWAYs a favorite thing to do since moving to FL26 years ago🎄The Boardwalk was also a fav to visit as we grew up on Boardwalks in NJ👍Sadly my husband became disabled so haven’t done it In many years😢So Thank you for letting me see it once again♥️💚
I love a good Christmas Stollen as they are delicious. Tell Kevin he can freeze the remainder of the stollen to enjoy later. Herb is an excellent salesman and quite the character. I would have bought one of everything in the basket based on his recommendations. I cannot wait to get some gingerbread cookies to enjoy for the upcoming holiday. This was a good video because of the Christmas tree fail. First, I thought you meant the Celebration tree failed, but then once I realized that the gingerbread houses were enough content, plus there would be a future Christmas tree video, all was right with the world.
I'm sure that Stollen bread will be more enjoyable properly sliced and perhaps warmed and toasted...yeah, I think I'm going to enjoy that. I'm fascinated with big loafy, nutty, fruit cakey holiday breads this time of year. Italian pannetone for instance, not the healthiest pastry and definitely an acquired taste, but something about these special breads are oddly gratifying, as it makes me somehow feel like I'm eating a big spongey yellow chunk of the innards of my family's living room sofa from back in the 80's, lol. I totally wanna eat this fruit cakey bread now, with hot cocoa, and watch Pee Wee's Christmas special now ( there was a lot of fruit cake in that episode)🎄

Two years ago we stayed at beach club in December, the beach club market had stollen available so we bought a loaf and it was so delicious. Reminded me of my childhood in Germany.

Every trip we make to wdw, I have to do something similar. I also ride the boat over to wilderness lodge. We’re actually there now. Staying at port orleans.
