    I bought an expensive banjo on a bipolar whim ten years back and it's been gathering dust when I realised one cannot just pick it up and play dueling banjo.
    But now I'm settled, diagnosed and got a life I didn't realise was possible I've decided to give it a go so Ive dusted the banjo and started the lessons,.
    Taking my time and enjoying the process.

    So 6 days I’ve managed to hide my banjo and practice from my family! I’ve been bitten by the sound and have set a goal to gift a song for all on the 4 th of July. I feel stupid like a kid again with a little white lie! Admittedly awful so far! Thanks Eli for your style that’s helping me to present a gift to my family. Hopefully I don’t get busted to soon!

    Grew up in a home listenin' to Flatt and Scruggs. My daddy tried to learn banjo, but he did not have the internet and Eli. Bought a banjo a few weeks ago, and Eli's doing an awesome job of teaching me pickin' and I've definitely grinnin'!

    My wife bought me a banjo years back because I had always shown interest in learning, just seemed like a funny and cool instrument to learn since I have some 'blue grass' family in my tree. Life has been getting in the way since then and I've just now decided to set aside a bit of time each day to learn and your lessons have been instrumental in allowing me to practice in small increments each day. Just simple little lessons that I can tell are building up the fundamentals on playing the banjo while keeping all the extra noise in the background so I wont be overwhelmed too early. All the skills I've learned so far have had me pracaticing longer than I really have time for and have me feeling very confident in my capabilities of actually learning this instrument.
    Thank you deeply. This is an absolute MUST for anyone wanting to learn this instrument -- or really any instrument. I can tell that this is definitely how I'd like to learn other instruments.

      I know right? :) The banjo turns out to be one of the most satisfying (analog) instruments I've ever played, right up there with the accordion.

    Day 2: I've flown through this much to my surprise and this is where I'll be slowing down progress. Just bought my first banjo last night and been following along. Love the lessons, now I'll be really going slow to get these patters. Thanks Eli :)

    Oof! I hit a wall on this one. I had it in my head the thumb never travels that far South! Going to work on this one for a few days. Brand new to banjo and any stringed instrument. Loving the lessons so far but with picks on my hand I feel handicapped at feeling the strings. But, I'll persevere because I love the sound of the banjo so so much.

    I'm really enjoying learning with you! You've broken it down into truly bite sized nuggets.
    I was gifted a banjo quite randomly and thought I'd try it out before passing it along. You've given me hope that at I can possibly learn 1 song before I decide what I want to do with it. It's fun to play and an interesting sensory experience, so who knows.
    Anyway, I'm having fun and thought youd like to know that your lessons are really well done.

    Something I learned years ago in a percussion school that might help some - when you're counting, no matter what the rhythm is, count the same. So all quarter notes (and play the mixture of quarters and eighths) or all eights and play the mixture. Disassociating your count from the notes is a good "independence" exercise.

    Not sure if you answer specific questions, but here it goes: 1) I can't tell how far the end of the pic should protrude from the end of my fingers? Can you show more closely? 2) My fingers pressing on the strings is a problem -- should I try to press more using the tips of my fingers or more the flat side?

    • @MasonCroneMusic
      @MasonCroneMusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pick position is just preference, and you fret the string with the tips of your fingers👍

  • @mhd5826

    I don't know if I have a particularly small or slidey lap, or a particularly heavy or polished banjo, but mine does not stay put if I'm not keeping a firm grip. I'm finding my right arm is sore and indented from trying to stop the banjo sliding away as I'm playing. What might I be doing wrong? Otherwise, after many yrs of starting to play and then giving up, I'm really enjoying this easy style of learning, thankyou.

    • @lucklesscracker
      @lucklesscracker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a similar issue mine is super slick as well.
      I found that leaning back in a more relaxed position and then crossing my legs at the knee and using the natural shape of my thigh sitting on top of the other one as a "holder" for the main body of the banjo keeps it from sliding as well as being more comfortable and helps with getting a better angle for my picking hand.
      When I put my left leg on top it naturally goes at an angle to my right side (towards my picking hand) with me leaning back a bit it help keeps the banjo from sliding away from me.
