  • While exploring an old, abandoned mine, I ended up getting much more than I bargained for. We were searching for a connection between two different abandoned silver mines underground when the ground suddenly caves under my feet. Needless to say, this was a close call where I learned a valuable lesson while exploring these abandoned places.

My wife sees how much I love watching your mine exploring videos and she always says something to the effect of “don’t even think about it”. This one really helped her make her point. I’m glad you’re alright and had some quick thinking help with you. Your videos are among the best mine exploring videos out there. Stay safe my friend!!

Wives are usually the reasonable ones when it comes to input regarding risk, lol! It truly is a blessing to have good friends with the same interests doing this type of thing. We always look out and help one another. I am humbled by your opinion about my videos! Thank you very much, and I really appreciate it!

Another excellent, gripping video! That was a good idea to point out how worn down the cross-ties were from all the foot traffic pushing ore carts. Yes, those bridges were something else. Because I was the last one coming through and was bringing up the rear, when I got to those bridges I simply made myself cross them in order to catch up. The one you show in this video certainly did have a substantial drop underneath it. I can’t remember if I crossed that one the way you did by going off to the side or if I simply walked across the board in between the rails. I think I did it the way you did. That footage of the ground giving way underneath your feet was quite dramatic! I found that if you watch it on 0.25x speed, you can see more details than otherwise possible at normal speed because it goes by so quickly. Yes, kudos to Joe for being there. In the slowed down version, you can see Joe’s arm coming out and grabbing you. It was another reminder for all of us not to get complacent while exploring these abandoned mines or to take anything for granted. Superb video, Justin! Loved it!

I was wondering when they said "Frank"...if they were talking about you. Lo and behold, the great Frank. Nobody has a grumbly voice like you my man. The man, the myth...the piano player!

That level of the mine seems to go through some different rock compared to the lower levels. Who knows how many false floors we crossed (besides the visible bridges) that are on that level, probably from stoping or collapse? I do need to slow down my camera movements! I get so caught up in the moment that I try to look everywhere at once! While the ground was giving way, I could hear Joe's rapid footsteps behind me to get to where I was to grab me. Luckily, my reflex was to fall backward and extend out my legs and head to do my best to wedge myself, and Joe happened to grab me at the same time. His reaction time was instantaneous! I'm glad you got to explore this one with us, Frank, and I always appreciate the positive feedback!

I explored that area thoroughly with Gail and her sister about three years ago. We dropped down that incline at 6:46; it leads into what we believe to be a WW2-era cut-and-fill stope with no passable interconnections. The conditions underfoot didn't look right so we took some photos and left.
That previously interconnecting drift blew up maybe fifty feet beyond where you fell. I think there was previously a false floor over it, I don't recall an open hole there. I also believe that drift is atop a filled cut-and-fill stope and the muck settled over time.

I remember you mentioning something like that a while back. After reviewing the map, we weren't as close as I thought we were to the connection that is obviously caved. Looking back, I did remember hearing the ground move, but I didn't. If I ever hear that again, I will definitely treat that sound like a bomb about to explode, lol!

Good on you all for watching out for each other underground. Any time you come across a shaft, winze, ore pass, or other vertical opening that's caving around the collar, use extreme caution - keep your feet on rail if it's available and hands on solid rib or competent timber, three points of contact wherever and whenever possible. Also know how to recognize false floors as those areas can give way without warning as well. Do be cautious trying to catch a person though, there are times where their fall can pull you right over an edge. This is primarily info for those reading who may be unaware, as you folks appear well versed; it's an excellent reminder for everyone, just as you also mentioned at the end there. Stuff happens man, glad nobody was injured, stay safe! That said, what a bad ass mine. Looks like some of the historic workings around here. Count me as a fan of your "live map" too, that's pretty clutch.

We are always mindful of collars around open holes. This event taught us to be even more careful now! Subsidence is an invisible threat! This situation was unique due to the gobbing and failing timbers. We really didn't want to touch anything, but when that event happened, I had no choice but to extend out and do my best to wedge myself. On a positive note, I did receive this as a lesson learned and will carry that extra caution with me here on out. I am really glad you like the map! That's probably the most intricate part of making these videos and takes the most amount of time to do. I think it adds context to the video. I appreciate the comment, and thank you very much for the input!

That hole going down in between the tracks. The collar around it collapsed. After that, I really didn't have any interest at that time to go back. Zia Mountain Adventure's video has some footage of the collapse.
