Angelo’s uses cooper sharp and their homemade bread is great. The cooper gives a unique tang. Woodrow’s is also unique with their cheese blend and cherry pepper mayo. A very good encompassing cheesesteak review of Philly.

If you're gonna allow Rowhome in this list, you should hit Gaul and Co for their "Wit or Witowski" - a kielbasa cheesesteak.
Angelo's is the reigning champ for sure. I prefer JRP over Woodrow's because it is more 'traditional' - matter of preference. Also highly recommend Jim's (now that they reopened) and Max's. And New Jersey has enough Philly transplants to manage their own good food - Donkey's, Boaggio's, several others.

John's and Angelos are neck and neck. It's all about the bread and they both use a quality, crusty sesame seeded roll. Personal experience will vary mostly on how quickly that sandwich is freed from its wrappings before the bread starts to turn soft.
In south jersey there is a spot that rivals both Johns and Angelos called Lillo's and is in the same vein, using a high quality sesame roll. Bafflingly, they put the cheesesteak in this box when you order it to go, however, which is just a sauna for the cheesesteak. By the time it gets to its destination the whole thing is mush so you simply can't order Lillos to go.

I live in Philly and applaud you for your excellent selections. I find Dalassandro’s a bit salty and the meat overly chopped to the point of minced meat paste but to each his own. Other good spots in Roxborough are Chubby’s and Barry’s and you won’t wait 45 minutes. Mama’s in Bala Cynwood. I have never been to Donkeys in Camden but I hear good things. Try Jim’s on South Street when it’s rebuilt from a very unfortunate fire.

@@nancybasile6230 😂😂😂😂😂😂LITERALLY THE WORST CHEESESTEAK I’VE EVER HAD…..I’ve honestly had better steaks in hospitals, high school cafeterias, and even down south…..And I gave them quite a few chances before I came to this conclusion. Everytime they got worse. Ya, the locals grew up on it cause there was nothing else around. Roxbourough might as well not even be in Philly. But wasn’t nobody from other ends of the city going out of their way for a DalASSandro’s steak, except tourists. Nasty ass meat chopped to oblivion sitting on top of the grill all day getting sprayed with water on an Amoroso roll that gets soggy as fuck by the time you get to your car. And my Uncle Leonard and Aunt Marie owned Amoroso, now my cousin Lenny does. Great roll for sandwiches but terrible for steaks. Their onions are way too big, they don’t cook them. It’s like they take the steak and dump it in toilet water before they serve it. I feel bad for anyone that grew up there and was subjected to that slop. Even Chubby’s right across the street is better……

One of the things that your captured nd hinted at: There really is no BEST Philly cheese steak. We have a ton of neighborhood places that do a variation that many people prize as the best, but there is nothing consistent, especially with the food boom that has been happening in this area for 40 years. One of the places featured, Dalasandro's was "my" cheese steak place growing up and well into adulthood. I hate to say it, but in my eyes, you have never had the real deal Dalesandro's that I knew for nearly 20. They changed things ... the way they were made, the meat to cheese ratio .... that place was a place we all went after a night out with friends or, before a movie and the steaks had a taste that the last few times I had them, just wasn't there any more. Not worth that long wait before they even exploded in popularity. One more thing. pretty much if you order whiz on a steak in Philly, we know you are a transplant or a tourist. American (Cooper sharp is the standard) is what most of us mean locally. There are some that do provolone, but when I was a kid it was a special request.

Angelo’s is king. John’s top 5. The rest not even close with dalASSandro’s being the worst steak in the city, maybe worst ever. That’s where we send tourists. They chop their meat to death and leave it in a huge pile on the grill all day and spray it with water. My family owns the company that makes the rolls dalASSandro’s used and I can tell you it’s one of the worst rolls for a cheesesteak. It doesn’t hold grease well and is made for hoagies and deli sandwiches. That’s why their steaks are always soggy and disgusting. Next time try Stoli’s, Joe’s, and Curly’s……
