Bill Nye: 4.8 magnitude earthquake is 'unusual' for Atlantic coast
#BillNye #Earthquake #BreakingNews
"All the way up to Boston"...?
Dude, we felt it here in _Vermont._
Nice
Cool
Jeez!
The largest earthquake known to have hit the east coast was in Charleston, S.C., August 31, 1886. No one knows how big, but it was estimated at Magnitude 7.3, which is a fairly large, California-sized quake. That was felt up and down the east coast. There's going to be a lot more (Matthew 24:7, KJV). Look up Alaska, 1964, and imagine that hitting New York.
@@davidlafleche1142 I'm sorry...did you just quote the bible?
I'm sorry; I don't believe in magic.
P.S..... let's quit hating each other. We are all in the same boat. Just because hate is being promoted doesn't mean we have to engage in hating each other.
I apologize for my mean words. 😢
That sounds great. Let's see if it's sincere.

now that you collapsed the country and life expectancy is plummetting thanks to you believing the lies of tge 1%
I agree there is so much hate and divisiveness in the US it's sad for the rest of the world watching. You used to be a country that was so respected then laughed at then sad when so many died from covid then it looked promising but then went back to laughing and now the world is just sad again that so much hate , name calling, racism etc etc etc is back full blown. I pray everyone is safe and that you all can come together as a nation. Best of luck
We live in Lancaster County. My son heard the glasses shaking in the kitchen cabinet. Amazing.
Oh wow
There's going to be a lot more where that came from (Matthew 24:7, KJV).

Wow, 2 science hate comments already. Nye is a great presenter of science education.
It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit with a quake. A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884. There's a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian mountains, and there are at least five smaller fault lines under Manhattan island.
Exactly.
"Duck, cover and hold on". Don't rush out of a building, simply for the reason that Mr Nye spoke of earlier, which is that earthquakes don't hurt anyone, buildings (and things falling down on people) can hurt someone.
Because buildings are built to withstand even the largest earthquakes
An earth-proof house offers some safety, but I believe living in a one-story shipping container house is safer than a traditional house.
@@n0body550 You are only referring to modern building standards. Do you have any idea how many old buildings are in New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut? Because all of these states were shaking, and they have quite a few really old buildings.
Running out into the streets surrounded by high-rise buildings is just putting yourself out into danger from falling glass and debris.

I spent the last 4 months in Medellin, Colombia and we had 3 there during that time. Luckily we don't have Tornados or Hurricanes in SF. Now the east coast has it all!

The New Madrid area is always having little quakes, most go unnoticed. Some geologists think many are aftershocks from the original quake that made the Mississippi run backwards, and the church bells ring in Boston.

Live?
So you literally sit and watch and wait for an earthquake?
@jaytaylor2312 no lol its a application that runs on pc, was working on a project and had it pop up on my screen before the earthquake even reached me
People who actually live in earthquake zones - like California and New Zealand - must marvel at our reaction to this tiny 4.8 shaker. It only felt like a slightly-too-long rattling train going by (at 40 miles from the epicenter), but the surprise factor added a bit of a “what was that?” excitement as we don’t experience things like this very often. So it was more of a curiosity than a felt threat and the media are milking that.
Lol, now you put the idea of a yellow stone eruption in my brain.
I keep a globe in my room and when an earthquake happens at one point, move your hand 180 degrees around the globe and you will be close to where the planet MUST equalize. the usgs earthquake site is great although it is 20-30 minutes behind actual time, still super cool. thanks Bill!
Could it be related to the recent activity in Iceland.

"Bill Nye said it? I believe it!!... I idolize & believe EVERYTHING he states & claims without researching for myself!"
This earthquakes happens every time in central America.
This just a bb quake in us
Tectonic in general. But I'd love to see the direct cause eventually. For being as rare as it is.
The magnetic flux of the earth fluctuates when earthquakes occur and this is why birds and animals sense them as they are in tune with this magnetism. It is how they migrate and bees fly certain directions
As long as this doesn't trigger the Yosemite Super Volcano (which most geologists say is overdue for an eruption) or send a tsunami towards Europe, I think it will probably be okay. Yeah, Yosemite is a long way away, but still on the same tectonic plate.
Your worried about that super volcano well what about the Canary Islands look that up it will wash away your fears of some dust on your car.
Earth's mantle is expanding. You are living in the fault zone.
Yup! The Apalachan mountain range stretches from Maine all the way south to a southern state
1000 year floods are unusual, every year now.
I like experts
Bill makes up nosence...hes such a wonderfull human being..perfect for msnbc
We get 4's a lot in Calif. You guys will be okay. It's when it gets over 5's that we get concerned.
Actually they've had earthquakes before. It's happened before there are faults on the east coast but older and continental convergence isn't as close to the coast as in California. There's a fault near Chaleston,SC too. And this past year we had a small quake off Florida.
Not as often as the Pacific but quakes do occur from the Mississippi (1812 New Madrid, MO ~8) on east and are felt over a larger area (rang church bells in Boston).
Me: kicking back, watching the east coast getting emotional and commenting Kumbaya and how we all are more united now 😂
What's unusual is the fact that it registered as a 4.8
Same day as eclipse 4/8
Which most of the world writes as 8/4/2024.
It’s called a coincidence
Happened at 10:23 a.m
1,2,3 day's until the eclipse
Try multiplying 2017 last eclipse by 2024
Wait till you see the answer.
That's 3 coincidences
As a Californian speaking. It is mild till 5. 5
Then the fun begins
Exactly
Most wouldn’t notice a 4.8
For us it’s a big deal we don’t experience that!
False alarm..Chris Christie just fell sending shockwaves from Jersey to NY..Everything is good.

Not a very deep quake; only 4.7KM/2.9miles deep. No wonder it was felt all the way to Vermont.
Volcanoes are erupting in several places all around the world as we speak. I worry most about gas lines exploding.
I wonder if all the rain we had prior to the earthquake caused it?
So the east coast is pressing west as the west coast is pressing east? Is this correct?
