The largest earthquake known to have hit the east coast was in Charleston, S.C., August 31, 1886. No one knows how big, but it was estimated at Magnitude 7.3, which is a fairly large, California-sized quake. That was felt up and down the east coast. There's going to be a lot more (Matthew 24:7, KJV). Look up Alaska, 1964, and imagine that hitting New York.

It's not the first time the East Coast and New York City have been hit with a quake. A 5.0 quake was measured in New York City in 1884. There's a major fault line in New Jersey called the Ramapo Fault, which stems from the Appalachian mountains, and there are at least five smaller fault lines under Manhattan island.

People who actually live in earthquake zones - like California and New Zealand - must marvel at our reaction to this tiny 4.8 shaker. It only felt like a slightly-too-long rattling train going by (at 40 miles from the epicenter), but the surprise factor added a bit of a “what was that?” excitement as we don’t experience things like this very often. So it was more of a curiosity than a felt threat and the media are milking that.
