Another way to play 3 handed (or other odd number of players) - without removing any cards, is to deal the cards out evenly to everyone and whatever is left - the “kitty” - gets put in the middle upside down. Then whoever takes the first trick gets the privilege of taking the kitty and that becomes part of the tricks/cards taken by that player. Using this method, I think it’s normal for the kitty to not be revealed to everyone until the end of the hand (how I have always played with others), although it could be played where it’s revealed when first taken. If it’s kept hidden until the end of the hand, it definitely adds a twist to the strategy involved.
We always played as the Queen of Spades breaking hearts as well, like if someone plays the queen you can start leading hearts. I find most ppl don't play like that, it's really infuriating when it's your lead and you have nothing but the queen of spades and a bunch of hearts and hearts hadn't been broken , you're forced to lead the queen. Where as the way I was taught you could lead a heart bc the queen counts as a heart
One question, why will people avoid taking hearts, even though they have lowest score and highest chance of winning. Im just starting out in trick taking games.
The score in this game can change quite quickly if you are not careful. Sometimes it is wise to take some hearts especially to keep one playing from shooting the moon.
