Used to work at Chickfila. Maybe 10 or so years ago working there was worth the hype. Maybe most of them are still worth the hype, I'm not sure. From my own experience, and from anecdotes I hear from others, Chickfila demands your soul. Some work is just going to be like that, I understand, but when Chickfila claims to be very "Christian" and to have raised standards, it shouldn't try to control the lives of its employees like sl*ves on a pl@ntation, tear families apart, and demand that they put on a "friendly"/"enthusiastic" face for the "guests." All that being said, it provided me with some real-world interactions with both coworkers and customers, which educated me in ways I couldn't have learned elsewhere. Had many good laughs. To some degree, everyone needs to experience American customer service long-term to get some perspective on things here, especially customer service in a bit of a seedy area. I will forever be grateful for my boss who said during my interview, "You know the saying, 'The customer is always right'? It's a lie, and you won't survive here if you try to act as if it's true." If you want to do some proper hard work that simultaneously demands and renews your soul, start a homestead, raise your own food, learn an art, learn to build, plant a new community as an outgrowth of Christ's Body, be committed and longsuffering.
Kinda as a side note, Chickfila is like an iteration of the Southern Boomers' dream. There's the Boomers' and Gen-Xers' work ethic and valuing excellence, but then there's the Boomers' dream. They are different. They can work together when the dream becomes vision, but they can also sabotage each other when reality doesn't align with the dream. The Boomers' dream we are finding to be exactly that - a vapor, a mirage, a dream. Since the American South is culturally insulated, this mirage is especially an issue there. For a long time, it was Chickfila policy that all "team members" needed to be constantly "enthusiastic," while basic "niceness" was assumed. Yankees and Europeans could learn a thing or two about social grace (there's a reason why Persians, Arabs, Indians, and West Africans feel drawn to the American South), but I think the aspects of Southern niceness that is a lie, is being broken and a new dynamic is forming. Hopefully, Southern social grace won't die while depth of relationship is cultivated among younger folks.
