I've been anti-tarp for years. This video has me wanting to order one right away. So much helpful useful information presented so cleanly and clearly in under 5 minutes. Very impressive! If only more gear channels could be so succinct...
Huge fan of tarping, light weight, easy to carry around, don't need a rain fly, hardly any condensation unless your sleeping bag is up against the walls, easy to get out of in case of an emergency, and many different ways to set it up as you see, you can set it up low profile for urban camping, easy to tear down in a hurry if you have to get out of dodge. You won't be disappointed
I have this one, I used the pyramid set up in the mountains only 3 stakes and a trekking pole to prop it up. It got down to the mid to upper 20s and I was fine. Used the A frame the next night ...I love the tarp, for as thin as it is, it's actually strong, but if it rains make sure you dry it off in the shade, as the thin material and the magnification of the sun in the water droplets may cause your tarp shrivel due to heat damage..I noticed this when I was spraying the dirt off it and hung it over a fence to dry and saw little wrinkles on the tent where the water drops were so be careful there, it dries fairly quickly about an hour in the shade.
I have the 10x12 Gold Armour full camo Rainfly and my favorite configuration is the C-Fly. I always cut and stack my firewood on each gable end for wind blocking and cover from heavy rain. This is the most concise and informative video on tarp set ups. Very impressive, thanx!! ☮️ Kudos!!
Thanks Miranda! I practice regularly with knots and I love it, I have a lot of fun! Very practical for the tent but especially with the tarp. Now I just have to go and practice. Thank you for this great video, it will be very useful to me
For most of these setups you want a “flat tarp”, so make sure you don’t accidentally purchase a “caternary cut” tarp which is sewn to have a curved ridgeline.
Great video, but my $3.49 tarp from Harbor Freight (hardware store ) is terrific! My ridgeline is the quick deploy/quick release type described by David Canterbury et. al. My guylines are adjustable as described by Andrew Skurka. Good location and off the ground several inches tarps are fine in the rain. Also another tarp flown higher for a porch, is nice for cooking, relaxing etc. In the rain.
If it rains you need a tiny 2 inch 50 mm trench just inside the edges of the Tarp otherwise after will run under it. The military have use the Hooch (Mansion) for decades.

This seems the only video available concerning the 10 x 10 flat tarp from REI. Very weird considering this is an online only item. If you find sales to be kinda lacking you might post a video so we can better dedide whether to order the quarter dome flat tarp . BTW...I note that this tarp has plenty of perimeter and center loops for tie out and is lighter than most 10 x 10 tarps. It seems a better value than the tarp from sea to summit. Thanks
Looks like it is probably a polyurethane coated nylon tarp, that's 115 inches square (or 9.58 feet) many "10 x 10" tarps are actually about 9.5 feet square. I think it is because they start out being 10 x 10 before the seams are sewn but I don't know. www.rei.com/product/147861/rei-co-op-quarter-dome-sl-tarp
Good video and information Miranda. But, not a tarp guy. But, I might carry something that lightweight as extra protection with my 4-Season Tent though. Camping at altitude too unpredictable.
This one is square for a-frame setup. The ones on the website are some dumbass diagonal design, without photos to show where the eyes and guides are located.
Tarp camping can be rough. I’ve woken up in puddles, had night long battles with field mice running around my head, and was extremely cold in the Maine fall.
What kind of line or cord are you using for your tarp? Also it would be cool if you made a video on how to make shelters in areas without trees, like the desert or at altitude. Great video, thanks.
I’m a newbie and this may sound superficial - but how do you deal with ants or other crawling insects with tarp-camping? Or is this only doe an emergency situation?
this would be used when you don't have those kinds of bugs. other tarp tents might have an interior mesh screen for bug protection, but that adds weight. If you're camping near your car you may as well get a cheap dome tent instead of this. People who use tarp shelters are knowingly giving up bug protection as a tradeoff for compact, light weight, and versatility.
Heat rises. In that arrangement, the heat from your propane heater will either dissipate into the air before entering your shelter, or if moved close enough to enter the shelter, it could damage your tarp. Burning propane fumes are dangerous, low concentrations are not harmful., however, a high concentration can displace oxygen in the air. Be careful.
I love this informational video, but it might give a little misinformation. Looking at the placement of the shelter it's right in front of a incline. Rain coming down wouldn't be a problem with a waterproof tarp. The only issue, would be pooling of water around and under the area where your shelter is. Would make for a wet area for sleeping sleep. Defeats the purpose of staying dry.
I don't get the idea of using a tarp rather than a tent. I live in the Mid-Atlantic region, and there are ALWAYS bugs and other critters, which I don't want crawling on me when I sleep. Also, I love the privacy of a tent for changing clothes, etc., and also a tent just gives me a sense of security that would be missing with a tarp. I have only used a tarp for shelter from rain while in camp, e.g., during meals, etc.
Erik Beyer : I hammock camp in Texas under a tarp. I started hammock camping one July in east Texas when it was about 100 degrees and the temperature may have dipped down to the upper 80s that night. I’ve always felt better in my hammock than in a tent dealing with bugs and critters. I got bit by a mean spider once in a tent - in Colorado, not even Texas. It left a big bruised ring on my inner thigh. I was worried enough about it to take a picture and note the time so I could tell the people at the emergency room how fast the bruise grew...luckily it didn’t get much worse and I still have all three legs. I just got a new hammock with a bug net. My old one didn’t have a net and I would shake it out before I got in it. I would also pack my sleeping bag into its stuffsack in the daytime. My question is how do people deal with all the thorns on every growing plant in the state of Texas in a tent? lol I am glad I’m in a hammock under a tarp, and I’m really glad my new tarp has a bugnet! I certainly don’t sleep on the ground in Texas without a bugnet. Some people that sleep on the ground (especially in Texas and Australia - where things on the ground will kill you) have a bivvy bag with a net built into it. It’s basically a waterproof shell with a bug net over the face that you slip your sleeping bag into.
whiteape55 : Many people use tarps instead of tents because they are much lighter weight. Tarps are also dryer than tents in cold weather where the moisture from your body and breath condenses on the cold walls of your tent causing you to get wet and cold at night. I’ve woken up with javelinas (think wild pig with long tusks) and a skunk very near my hammock on the same night. If I was in a tent I would have heard weird noises outside and gotten scared. From my hammock under my tarp I felt pretty sure the javelinas and the skunk wouldn’t bother me. Also I have been known to slap the side of my tent to scare critters away at night because I didn’t know what was out there; if I did that to the skunk I might regret it. Instead I just laid in my hammock, took some pictures and smiled. Most critters are as interested in waking up a human as a human would be to go wake up a bear or alligator or mountain lion. They aren’t going to wake you up to take a selfie, so I wouldn’t worry about them too much. Be safe and smart in bear country though! - they are like overgrown mice, they’ll get into anything that smells like a meal.
This is her tarp shelter gosh darn.

Highly legit. I’m really digging this series. Short and to the point. Perfect for my age and add riddled brain.
We're glad to know you are enjoying these!
Glad to see rei doing some ul videos like this. Very well done and helpful. Thanks guys.

As someone new to backpacking, these quick instructional videos are great!!

Great video clear information without the waffle . Presented in a very professional manor.
Thanks for watching, Anthony!
Tip: You can make your own tracking poles and stakes with a knife and some sturdy sticks.
The tarp in the video is a REI Co-op Quarter Dome SL Tarp which is 115 × 115 inches (2.9 × 2.9 m)
I watched so many viedeos about setting up tarps this is by far the best I've seen. Thank you.
O m Jesus !
Pinnacle of tarp set ups !
the tarp is cool, helpful tips and her braid is awesome...
for the prusiks, it's easier to tie the prusik loop around your ridgeline and then just use a stick toggle to attach it to the tarp
So much natural beauty.
Great video, but my $3.49 tarp from Harbor Freight (hardware store ) is terrific!

How does Skurka do his guylines? It's been a while since I read his book.
@Nate Jones
Will do. Thanks.
Skurka via SD: th-cam.com/video/slOhlEmBwwY/w-d-xo.html
We need more with that big dude and that little girl , they could even have their own TV show I bet
Very good video. I am switching from 10 to tarps. I am trying to learn all I can. I am using a net shelter along with my tarp. God bless you
Very helpful video. Miranda is the best!
Thank you for this excellent informative video and for explaining everything so easily and clearly.
Thank you for the lovely comment! We're glad it was helpful. 😊
I’m going to try the Closed end A-frame. Thanks!
Miranda is the best
An awesome imformative, and helpful video. Thank you.
Awesome instructional! & I’d love to go camping with you in a small tarp shelter lol. 💯😆😍😘
Excellent and informative
That's the goal. Thank you!
Let’s talk about what the knots tied in the rope it comes with are - and how they are useful, and how to use them
This is a great video!
Very nice video for my. Thank you.
What a great video ! Thank you
Great tips!! Blessings to you and your family 😇 🇺🇸
Super informative and helpful video! Thank you :)
Very nicely presented
Wow thanks very useful!
Can you do things for winter camping. Clothing layerings. 2/3/4 season tents. Sleeping pad and bag insulation ratings. Etc
Unrelated.. hammock tents. With the new flash and quarter dome hammocks
I like your videos , very good information. Keep it up
Buen video, gracias por los subtítulos, saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina

Just bought a Paria tarp!
back before she had her own show gosh darn!
Check out the plow point too for great coverage
Thank you

yep , well done . surprised to see the bushcraft knots .. happy holidays .
billy joe
Yeah really cool video, thanks.
love this
She had me at 'tarp'
This tarp does not appear to be available on your website. I want to buy it. Which is it?
Marc rei co-op camp tarp. There is also a big Agnes, sea to summit, and kelty tarp
That tarp is the same color but not the same tarp. Different ties in different places, right?
Marc yeah. They are different. I’m assuming this one may be an older model and prototype nope out yet, but idk
This one is square for a-frame setup. The ones on the website are some dumbass diagonal design, without photos to show where the eyes and guides are located.
The tarp on the video looks very nice. Hopefully, they will be available soon.
Great video
Great video! What tarp is this?
Tarp camping can be rough. I’ve woken up in puddles, had night long battles with field mice running around my head, and was extremely cold in the Maine fall.
We agree, it can be a very tough way to camp. All kinds of camping has its pro's and con's.
Nice summary ! Wonder why hiking poles were used with sharp ends upwards ( it seems less safe )? .
You put the ends of the poles through the loops on the tarp. The other way with the handle would generally be to big to do that.
Im super interested in doing this, but what about critters like snakes and chipmunks
What kind of line or cord are you using for your tarp? Also it would be cool if you made a video on how to make shelters in areas without trees, like the desert or at altitude. Great video, thanks.
You can use 550 paracord
What size tarp are you using in your video?
Great, succinct video! What size tarp is this? Will this tarp be a new spring-summer addition to the REI line-up?
I'm guessing this is the new Quarter Dome SL, which is 115 inches square
www.rei.com/product/147861/rei-co-op-quarter-dome-sl-tarp
Rei finally realizing the marketability of ul lol
What do you do about water coming in on the ground if it rains?
Could you set this up as a pyramid shelter?
I’m a newbie and this may sound superficial - but how do you deal with ants or other crawling insects with tarp-camping? Or is this only doe an emergency situation?

i want to make one for using a propane heater out front pointing in

what tarp is that?
Such A great communication and knowledge thank u and 4 all your videos
I wish I could put up a tarp as well as here. My tarp set up has wrinkles like grandma"s face
What size is this?
How do you deal with bugs? I would not do this is Texas... scorpions, spiders that kill you, snakes that kill you...

A-frame was the simplest one
Plow point is even simpler
Was this the 9 12 or 16
Based on the tie-outs, I think it's the new Quarter Dome SL
www.rei.com/product/147861/rei-co-op-quarter-dome-sl-tarp
The tarp in the video isn’t even available for purchase yet from rei. Perhaps trying to break into new ground. Should make a mid
Trucking poles? Is that what the poles are called? Need to know what to look for.or is it trekking she says
Trekking poles!
how many grams these tarp sheet?
Hi! Other suggestions of tarp setups from me @588s
oh god yes
I just think about heavy rain and water running through the ground underneath causing much discomfort
I wish you sold tarps in colors other than glaringly bright white.
The thing that makes this impossible are the knots. I could be there all day and will never figure out the knots.
👍🏻
Aren't there a risk of insects crawling on you at night? What about the deer ticks? Not appealing to me to get a Lyme Disease.
You have a higher chance of getting hit and killed by a car every day, yet that doesn’t stop you from driving now, does it?
Hi future Miranda Goes Outside
With little protection why use this thins at all?

Please create a video using a 10' x 7' tarp.
Do you want spiders in your sleeping bag? Because that’s how you get spiders in your sleeping bag.
