Wearing L-plates since May 2020, a Lockdown guitar newbie, I almost always end up here when I have music theory questions to think about. Between you and Gracie Terzian, you explain music theory in plain English and keep it interesting too. You also put theory into context and show its beauty by interlinking concepts. TH-cam needs a "Gracie & Ricky Show" ! Thank you .. 😎
Easily the most comprehensive teaching of the augmented and diminished chord and their relationship with the major and minor tonalities. I love this ricky! The visualization really helped a lot. Highly recommended channel on teaching guitar both for theory and practicality. 5 thumbs up! And 5 stars rating!
always wanted to learn guitar (53 now)... son was gifted a beautiful hand made acoustic , but doesn't "want" it... it must have been a sign for me... not letting it waste... I'm binge learning! loving it! you are the best of the best on YT... but perhaps you already know... i'm so grateful you do what you do, they way you do it.... warm wishes.
I just want to say that this video is absolutely amazing. I am just learning guitar, (I’ve been playing for about 3 weeks) and I searched up “guitar theory; what are triads” and it brought me here. This video explains and visualizes triads so clearly I am astonished. Thank you for making this video, it’s insane how good this was. I’m bookmarking this for sure.
Hi, Ricky, it is good to see a video from you. To me the A Major sounds happy, the A minor sounds sad, then A augmented sounds bold and confident, and the diminished sounds dark and sinister. Thank you for taking the time to make this interesting lesson for us. I look forward to seeing more lessons from you.
Well done! You get a virtual certificate for the refrigerator for doing your homework! I'll be doing an exploration of these 4 triads to give even more context. Thanks for supporting my work by watching!
You beet me to it. I learned this and completely understand the concept in 1 video, and I've " heard the concept brushed over before and I guess I just wasn't listening..lol I wanted to listen because HE MADE IT RELEVANT..great job.
Diving into the how and why music works and sounds is a real breakthrough for all musicians wanting to learn the theory. Once you see the shapes and can relate to the names is helpful. Perhaps a lesson of how to structure where those triads fit into logical progressions would help as well. You are a wonderful instructor. I hope more people find your channel, as it provides so much more pertinent information.
Wonderful explanation. Always a treat to get a lesson from you. I find the A Major to be very bright and happy. A minor is quite melancholy to my ear. A Augmented is tense, but the A diminished is insanely tense like you'd hear in a murder mystery.
Diminished makes me think of a western cowboy movie. The bad guy walks into a saloon. Everyone stops what they're doing. It gets dead quiet. Suddenly, the dreaded diminished cord is heard. That lets you know that someone's about to get hurt.

Hi Ricky...did the homework and found that the Major and minor are full sounding and the Aug & dim don't offer a peaceful resolution. This exercise is bringing together my music theory fundamentals. Thought at one point theory would continue to fly over my head. But now, the pied piper of theory (Ricky) has led me to the light. Thanks Ricky! BTW...I ordered. your spiral bound book...looking forward to receiving it! Is it in order of complexity...how is it organized?
I dont mean to be so off topic but does anybody know a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me!
@Brooks Rafael thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site through google and im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Excellent…. At the end I was thinking about the A7 chord. In that one it looks like the root is modified (flattened). I was going to say bR, 3, 5 seems to be the formula but the root is flattened twice making the note A a G in the chord A7. Can we say bbR, 3, 5.
It's a long tale...needless to say everything has changed in the last year hasn't it? Doing what must be done to keep life and limb together! Stoked you enjoyed the lesson :)
Major is bright and cheerful. Minor is darker, moody and sad. Augmented sounds unresolved. Like something needs to happen musically after it to provide resolution. Diminished is also unresolved. If you follow the augmented and diminished with an A Major chord, then they resolve, but to my ear, augmented sounds major and diminished sounds minor.
@@rickysguitar do you have a website with your guitar lessons.......you are the Best teacher ever bar none!!!!! From personal prospective of a person who only picked up a guitar les than a year....you explain things with such clarity...blows me away
Thank you for your kind words! I'm just building 2 courses which will be going up on my revamped website soon. Working very hard to get it done! (It's harder to do than I thought!).
Augmented means you add (+) and dimished means you take away (-) something in the literal sense of the word. Makes a lot of sense, especially if you can't get boobs off your mind!! lol
Major sounds happy or pleased Minor sounds sad Aug sounds suspenseful (like you don't know what's about to happen) Dim sounds sinister to me (without any other context for the triad added)
Thanks Ricky, you are a super teacher, wish you were my Algebra teacher in HS over 50 years ago. I played the chords carefully in the homework and I think the Augmented and diminished chords sound pretty ugly, are they used much in rock and pop music? René in USA
Ah René! Context is everything. You know how sometimes some that tastes awful on its own becomes an essential flavour to make a classic recipe. That the Augmented and diminished sound. It’s what comes before and after that give it meaning and context!
Now then James! Well done for doing your homework! You have to give the Aug and dim a chance lol. I've got a follow up video which will hopefully give some context to their usage in a practical manner on guitar :) Thanks for watching buddy!
Hi Ricky, re: homework this video:
A major: IS, being, base, confidence, happy
A minor: anticipation
A Augmented: doom/gloom
A dim: worry

Diminished needs other around it to really be appreciated. It could very well sound dark/sinister, but I guess it's the peripherals that shade it.

I never understood the make up of Augmented and diminished Triads until your lesson, thank you for that “ah ha” moment👍👏
Thanks. Handwritten method is fantastic because we watch how you build the example.
Oh man! Just had the ah ha moment. Great video! Again thank you Ricky. I think we should all buy a t shirt from you!!!! Love you all Bill.

The Major and Augmented are a pair and minor and diminished are a pair. First two are bright and happy and the second two are sad and somber.
