10 Licks of the Day for Study - Compilation

  • This video is a compilation of ten short excerpts ("licks") for study, in various styles, for the intermediate to advanced piano student. The PDF with detailed commentary is available from www.j3po.net
    It’s important to note that these “licks of the day” are just snapshots of musical language. In no way are these musical ideas intended to be simply regurgitated or “inserted” into any solo or musical context on their own. Rather, it’s necessary to digest how these little excerpts are constructed. The best way to do that is to analyze these phrases and learn them in all 12 keys. This way, you understand the construction and concept of these phrases and it will inform and expand the ideas in your own playing and improvisation.

    Julian “J3PO” Pollack is a Los Angeles-based pianist/keyboardist and producer described by Timeout New York as a musician who “deftly balances virtuosity with tenderness.” Julian is known for his innovative use of keyboards and synthesizers in jazz, fusion, hip-hop, and electronic styles of music. Julian has toured extensively with the legendary artist Marcus Miller, as well as performing with artists such as Talib Kweli, David Sanborn, Chris botti, Michael League, Eric Harland, and others. Julian has worked closely as a sound designer with keyboard/synth companies Nord Keyboards, Sequential, and Oberheim, and has created factory presets for the Prophet 5, the Oberheim OB-X8, Take 5, Nord Stage 3, and Nord Wave 2. In addition to these hardware keyboard companies, Julian also has done sound design for Universal Audio (most recently, Opal, a new wavetable synthesizer), Softube, Cherry Audio, and Spectrtasonics.

      yes, for the pads stuff, those are in my rev 2 pack...the 12 tone lick...that particular one I was using the rev 2 as a midi controller for my sampled Rhodes!
