- The Cleveland Browns traded their former #1 overall pick Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers for a 2024 5th round pick. The move puts an end to the Baker Mayfield-Browns saga which started at the tail end of last season and continued into the summer. The Panthers are set to host the Browns in Week 1 of the NFL regular season. Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe react to Baker being traded.

I often wish that the discussion could be so much more informative. What I mean is explain how top rated QBs go to certain teams and fall off the HC and QB get the lion share of the blame and credit both undeservingly…who are the developmental coaches say the names of the teams and developmental coaches that are great at helping the drafted QB transition successfully because it can’t always be the QB is not that dude right?

If Baker was a great QB as Skip says 19 million and a 5th round pick is a steal for any team needing a starting QB who is that guy. Sadly, Baker was barely average in Cleveland with an above average team. Baker actually stopped Cleveland from winning more. Put a good QB in Cleveland and they have more than 1 playoff win in 4 years. Cleveland has a very nice roster. Baker made it average at best.
When he was healthy with a healthy roster he won 11 games plus a playoff win and finished top 10 in QBR. Literally above average. Lol he got 7 wins his rookie year for a team that had 0 the previous year and 4 in the previous 3 years. You have the situation entirely backwards. Cleveland is a career destroyer. To perform above average there and win a playoff game is more of an accomplishment than doing the same with a team that was already winning games and going to the playoffs.

Unless you actually believe that all 30+ QBs who got there before Baker were trash. 30+ 1st round draft picks and accomplished vets, all trash. So you can assume 30 guys were trash or you can assume 1 guy was a lot better than all of them. When considering two possibilities, it's best to go with the one that requires the fewest assumptions.

11 games. 20 TD. 12 of them in 3 games. That leaves 8 in 8 games. Not very impressive breaking it down when he got them. 3 of those 11 games Baker threw for less than 170 a game. 1 game of 111. Not great breaking down those 11 games. Baker was barely average in those 11 games when you remove the 3, he passed for 12 TD. You could say he wasn't even average in those 8 games. I always use this. I pass for 800 yards and 6 TD in one game. Game 2 I pass for 100 and zero TDs. Added together I pass for 900 yards and 6 TD in 2 games. Look Godly, doesn't it? But look when I got them. It doesn't look nearly as Godly. That Baker's 11 games. Total wise they look pretty good. Then break them down they don't look very good at all. And that's with the number 1 rush attack in the NFL over those 11 games.

There were a lot of injuries on that Browns team and the offensive line was awful. Both running backs were out some with injuries, sometimes at the same time, and the play calling was not the best. As some have stated, the organization was obviously lacking. I don’t understand all the ultra criticism and the true motives for such. Seems over the top.

lol skip keep saying it’s ok for Cleveland to replace Baker with Watson because Watson is a top 3 qb when he last played, but continues to say Baker is good. Cleveland had multiple chances to get Watson in the 2017 draft before the Texans traded up for him. For them to pass on Deshaun in 2017, draft Baker #1 ovr the next year, then trade for Deshaun 5-6 years later is a bad look on Baker and the Browns.
The browns were already out on Baker long before Deshaun was available

Shannon clearly doesn't understand that trade precedence don't apply to the NFL as much as it does in the NBA. Browns were desperate and they waited so they could get a better deal. Is Baker going to lead them to the playoff? Probably not. But to say he's not going to make them better over Sam Darnold is just a stupid conclusion.

it absolutely is not Stupid they've both been below average but one had a great team and the other had 2 bad teams . id loooovvveee to see the day to day competition every drill every meeting that would be really cool, and just for fun add Josh Rosen to the room . he's been on terrible teams with terrible front offices as well . lets really see how that draft would have went . Allen and Lamar have shown their worth on good organizations. The other 3 haven't been offered the same luxury.

I would take Shannon’s take seriously but he’s not acknowledging baker has been 100x better than darnold so far. And baker’s last 2 years w the browns were definitely better teams than darnold ever had. 1 of those years he won a playoff game, the other year he got injured. But in baker’s first 2 years the browns were terrible & baker still threw a then record 27 TD’s as a rookie. Baker is not great, but he’s easily an upgrade from darnold
