Why do we need to calculate the interval (i.e. [0,3] ) if we were given the f(c) value? must it be between f(0) and f(3)? and thanks for the explaining you are AWESOME
To show you (students) that the K value is really in-between f(a) and f(b) The question is telling you, however he(organic chemistry tutor) is showing you that IVT is applicable.
@@kyleholland7154 probably a little late but for anyone who stumbles upon this present day, just solve for x. FACTOR the polynomial after you set it to zero. But most of the time your professor or teacher will just ask you to SHOW that there is a root or zero within the interval, which is exactly what he did at 1:57
I have a question. In the first example f(x)=x^3+4x-2 where we have [0,2] where a=0 , b=0. So we get f(0)= -2 and f(2) = 14 . Right. So we try to find "c" where f(a)
I think that's because he said the problem to solve was proving that there is a c such that f(c)= 0. He proved it with this theorem but didn't solve the exact value (which wouldn't be necessary for the problem he stated)
If you were to show that a root exists betwwn say [-5,5] of x² for argument sake, if you plug in the numbers your going to get 25 for each one, but the IVT still holds there is a number c where f(c) is 0. I can see that if you have f(a) negative and f(b) positive then it's trivial but if both are positive or negative, it would seem to me that you would need to dig a bit further right, like finding critical points. Is that right?

We have to make sure that the equal with work right with the interval. f(0) or f(3), one has to be negative and the other has to be positive.

Hey, so on the third example, how did you get (x-2)(2x+1)?
He factored the equation by grouping
He did factorisation of the quadratic equation
What if we’re not given an interval only the equation and asked to find if a root exists
solve the equation for f(x)= 0 that's the answer
what if the teacher does not give you an interval? how do you find the interval yourself?
Graph and pick an interval I assume
