I feel like this will have the same affect as the symbol from Germany. That symbol is suppose to mean peace (or something similar) in India and many other cultures but due to WWII, the meaning has changed. Now it reminds people of the war instead of peace. Hopefully the letter Z doesn't become that.
For Ukrainians, it already has. I remember reading an English text about 2 weeks after the war had started, and the font in this text had prominent capital letters. I came across a sentence that started with a capital Z and unexpectedly, I felt my stomach twist. That was the moment I realised that this letter has already become something that makes me subconsciously feel a mixture of dread, anger and disgust.
"Z" - forces from the western russia, "Z" in square - forces from Crimea, "O" - forces from Belarus, "V" - marines, "X" - Chechens, "A" - special forces. You're welcome
everything is much easier. if you remember, there were exercises before entering the territory of Ukraine. And almost all of this equipment participated in the exercise, and there they were divided into two groups "Z" - west, "V" - east. and these symbols simply did not have time to be erased, but then, when they became recognizable and associated with the Russian army, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation stated what this means for victory, etc.

Even though I am russian and I was in Saint-Petersburg in February 2022, I still didn't understand were Z came from at the moment. It just sort of appeared one day and suddenly, it was everywhere. On social media, TV, on billboards and cars... However, alongside Z, more and more graffiti apposing/mocking this symbol and the war was appearing and getting covered up each day, too
They are called identification marking’s. Any military analyst knew what they were from the start and it took on the role as a symbol for the invasion.
As I Russian, I must admit that the quality of the video is incredible. Everything has been explained concisely and without missing any important facts. Thank you! As for the sign itself, I am very concerned and upset about its rise and against it.
@@ZeldaFeb don't trust the news, that 75% support this war. Actually, the question is "do you support war or you will be jailed for 15 years". However, independent survey showed, that it is real figure, and 75% actually supports, but out of 31 000 people agency reached for study, 29 500 refused to answer, when obviously they are against.
@@Анастасия-н6ц4ф I figured most did not support it, I did not mean to imply that I thought majority of Russians supported it. I did not know the statistics though, thank you for sharing, I'm very happy to hear that!
Wish you were right, but it’s not. Заканчиваем войны - [we] end wars, за мир - for the peace (also it can be read as for the world, it is the same word in Russian, but here they probably meant peace), за правду - for the truth, задача будет выполнена - task will be accomplished, сила в правде - force is in the truth, за победой - [going] for the victory,
There is also an opinion, that these symbols were used during the military exercises in February, right before the invasion for defining the sides: "Z" for "Zapad" (transliteration Russian word "Запад", which means west); and "V" for "Vostok" (also transliteration of "Восток", which means east). And as another commentator wrote, it's easier to draw Latin variants, and also Z and V, are more distinguishable than Cyrillic variants З and В. PS What does the letter "O" means? Actually, dunno, because there is no side in the Russian language, that started with O (also, it can be just a circle, lol) But I guess, they just started using different markers for their own purposes, maybe for defining different armies and divisions (but it doesn't make a lot of sense, because you can find the same symbols on opposite fronts) Also, I don't think, that they used it to define "ours" and "others" because Russia and Ukraine use different camouflage and some types of vehicles.
It's Vox, ofc there were minimal research involved. You'd think a news source would at least bother to translate or understand relevant languages in their photos before attaching a narrative to it. What a joke, lol.
Seems pretty weird for Russia to use a letter used primarily in Western languages in their rally against the West's supposed antagonistic dominance. That would be like the US saying "God bless あmerica" in support of Pacific soldiers in WWII.
Z and V are simply easier to write than З and В. Moreover, the main task of this campaign is to convey Russia's position to residents of other countries, and Latin letters are much more familiar to them and easier to remember
I can explain the real meaning of those letters: "Z" is for "Западный Округ" (Zapadniy Okrug), in english it`s "Western District" of Russian army, "V" is for "Восточный Округ" (Vostochniy Okrug), in english it`s "Eastern District" of Russian army, "O" is for "Центральный Округ" (Tsentralniy Okrug), in english it`s "Central District" of Russian army, "Δ" is for "Северный Округ" (Severniy Okrug), in english it`s "Northern District" of Russian army, that`s all.
But why it's not written in Cyrillic, outside of the "delta" symbol. I am Czech and my first guess was that's is vychod/zapad (vostok/zapad), but then other symbols started appear and it didn't seemed like I was right.
@@M1chlos actually there`s no need to write those symbols in Cyrillic, those are something like markings to distinguish the military equipment, cuz each unit performs a specific task. I know there are some other symbols like "Z*" or "Θ" but those perform the same function too, just markings being used for own needs.
It was really special in France, because it happened to be that, during the ongoing presidential election, for his own campaign, Zemmour and his team adopted the symbol "Z", the initial of his name, naming him that way, saying "the Z will do this and that" "waiting for the Z"... And Zemmour was a candidate with a rather ambiguous stance over Russia and the war in Ukraine...
Unfortunately, some people here continue to believe them. They say they will protect the workers and poor people (that's good in it's own) to promote their own ideology.
@@francoiscamy5066 Marine le Pen and Zemmour don't have the same agenda and the same promises. Marine Le Pen basically claim what you're saying - and indeed her program, in its economic aspects, corresponds partly to this objective. Zemmour however did acknowledge he doesn't have that much to offer for poors and middle class, and explicitly advocates against immigration and in favor of tough measures in this domain (with security, tackling islamism etc.). Zemmour is not just further on the right from Le Pen, he also has (or had) a very different, and very limited, economic policy.

I would like to note that all these "events" are held only in public institutions, ranging from schools and hospitals to factories and universities. The threat of dismissal or expulsion is hidden under the picture of mass support. On the other hand, there is also no anti-war movement, this is explained by the fact that for any single picket or other action, huge fines and the risk of imprisonment of up to 15 years are accrued. It comes to the point of absurdity when a man with blue and yellow sneakers was detained in Moscow.
@@tobbcittobbcit8899 Yes, this has also happened more than once. But just the day before yesterday, a circle of people were detained, who stopped and raised their hands as if holding a poster. I feel like this really needs to be considered regarding all the criticism towards Russian influencers and celebrities who are promoting pro-Russia messaging. While I'm certain some of them definitely do believe what they're saying, it's not like the ones who don't are given a choice in saying anything negative about the war when they're public figures saying things in public forums where the Russian government could easily come after them

The first time I saw that letter being used by the Russian military, it immediately reminded me of Costa-Gavras’ film “Z” (1969), which is a disturbing masterpiece about an authoritarian regime. I think this is the case because of the scale. Another important fact is that world war 2 was the only major war (since the 1856 crimean war) which they didnt lose or had their army underperform making an embarrassment of itself. Oh no how can i write Zoo when i keep getting flash back.. lol

Already did
For Ukrainians, it already has.
"Z" - forces from the western russia,
"Z" in square - forces from Crimea,

everything is much easier. if you remember, there were exercises before entering the territory of Ukraine. And almost all of this equipment participated in the exercise, and there they were divided into two groups "Z" - west, "V" - east. and these symbols simply did not have time to be erased, but then, when they became recognizable and associated with the Russian army, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation stated what this means for victory, etc.

ngl vox isn't really a checker more of a rusher
PS
What does the letter "O" means? Actually, dunno, because there is no side in the Russian language, that started with O (also, it can be just a circle, lol)
But I guess, they just started using different markers for their own purposes, maybe for defining different armies and divisions (but it doesn't make a lot of sense, because you can find the same symbols on opposite fronts)
Also, I don't think, that they used it to define "ours" and "others" because Russia and Ukraine use different camouflage and some types of vehicles.
Makes sense
But what would O stand for? 🤔
also Z can mean "Земля" (Land) and V for "Воздух" (Air), because Z often on land technic (tanks, trucks) and V on helicopters
What does the "O" mean then? It doesn't stand for any direction in Russian (sever:north, zapad:west, Vostok:east, yug:south)
Západ, Vóstok, gospodín «ja translitêríroval»

Seems pretty weird for Russia to use a letter used primarily in Western languages in their rally against the West's supposed antagonistic dominance. That would be like the US saying "God bless あmerica" in support of Pacific soldiers in WWII.
Z and V are simply easier to write than З and В. Moreover, the main task of this campaign is to convey Russia's position to residents of other countries, and Latin letters are much more familiar to them and easier to remember

End of story.
I think this is the case because of the scale. Another important fact is that world war 2 was the only major war (since the 1856 crimean war) which they didnt lose or had their army underperform making an embarrassment of itself.
Here are all the major wars they lost:
- 1856 crimean war
- world war 1
- 1918 finnish civil war
- 1920 war of Estonian independence
- 1921 polish-soviet war
- 1940 winter war was kinda a soviet win but they severely underperformed loosing 300k soldiers, while Finland lost only 70k
- 1989 Afghanistan
- 1996 chechen war
That's because of big losses in WWII. Every country lost many, but USSR lost ALOT. Just search for WWII losses by country.
I bet they don't teach Russian children that Stalin invaded Poland the same time Hitler did. They would have remained allies if Germany hadn't betrayed them. They've nothing to be proud of.

It's already censored.
Why has the West not sanctioned this letter already?? see prequel to this video by smashing my face with the mouse

I’m sure Nikon’s advertising department is super happy about this when it comes to their Z line of mirrorless lenses. 😑

Russians don't care.

The Z was used to mark as pointed out the troops in southern Ukraine and V, O, on the Northern army force, because the Russians thought that the armies will meet so fast, that they need to be distinguished from each other, and of course to recognize foe from friendly. Any other meaning was added after the Russian army failed to capture Ukraine in a few days which was the initial plan.
Also on 7:50 you can see that on the truck in the middle someone painted Z incorrectly and fixed it, because that's how educated Russian conscripts are.
Wrong meanings. The right ones are below.
*Russian Military Markings* (per euromaidanpress in Ukraine)
“Z” alone - Eastern Military District forces (not western as some claim)
🅉 or “Z” inside a square - Forces from Crimea (Southern Military District)
“O” or a circle - Forces based in Belarus
“V” - Naval Infantry forces (Marines)
“X” - Ramzan Kadyrov’s Chechen forces (Kadyrov is a Putin-installed warlord in Chechnya)
“A” with an extended crossbar - Alpha Group Special Operations forces (SSO)
Z isn't a letter in Cyrillic though. Ask the average US soldier to write some Russian letter and he'd likely write it backwards too.
everything is much easier. if you remember, there were exercises before entering the territory of Ukraine.
@@nmiller4085 Maybe you are right, but I come from an eastern European nation that uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and pretty much everyone knows English here, or even if they don't know enough to speak it, they at least know the English alphabet.
@@skayzi_lego Yes in fact that makes sense, because in Russian east is "vostok" and west is "zapad" if they are written in english alphabet.

I suppose the whole "zombie" connotation is fitting.
"Z" и "V" можно как нацистскую свастику спокойно принимать. Я живу в России моногие в моем окружении поддерживают войну, но не хотят идти на неё (как иронично) . Я не поддерживаю агрессивную политику Путина. Мне не стыдно , что я Русский. Я не выбирал где я появлюсь.

That Russian gymnast who lost to the Ukrainian & another gymnast from a former Soviet Republic should be banned from international competition!! He was not a winner (and lost to a Ukrainian) but used his platform for political purposes to support an illegal invasion! Despicable!!!
ukrainians are russians and ukraine is a region of Russia it doesnt even have internationally recognized borders 😂
Russia is the second best army in Ukraine.
Not the second. First is the Ukrainian army, second is the ukranian farmers, third is the Ukrainian civilians and fourth is the russians.
The fourth should be the Ukrainian tractors, the fifth should be the Russian army, not the Russians😊
Hahahaha keep dreaming ukrain keep dreaming and keep buying western weapons.
1. Ukrainian army
2. Ukrainian farmers
3. Ukrainian civilians
4. Ukrainian tractors
5. Ukrainian LGBTQ+ community
6. Russian army
Ukraine still cannot retake the territories occupied by this weak army since 2014
In a way it's ironic that Russian nationalism would ossify around a non-indigenous symbol from the West. I can't help but think that their introjection of the "Z" is a sign of their subconscious desire to be like the West.
This is the problem of all people of Putin's generation, they are the most Soviet of all Soviet generations and are filled with a sense of revanchism and trampled national dignity so much that they do not want to perceive reality, and do not believe in anything creative. They have literally an eternal war of all against all and the cult of the death of Russia in their heads. It's not ironic.
Эта буква была в ранней кириллице. В церковнославянском её до сих пор используют.
In Mexico the Z has a rather obscure background because of a criminal group in the decade of 2010 called "Los Zetas" (literally "The Z's") which were almost a terrorist criminal group that made mid-day shootouts, executions, kidnapping, etc. and it started a war against druglords that to this day has had more than 200,000 deaths and much more "disapparead people". Some estimates suggests that the total death count of this war is around 400,000
Wasn't there a recent Zapatistas "war" and do they use the letter Z? Then there is the movie character Zorro that would make an Z with his sword.
@@chexrice the Zapatistas war was a different thing that happened mainly in the 90s with president Zedillo. The Z's were from the 2010 decade
