The Disney+ Original movie “Hocus Pocus 2” is a live-action comedy and the delightfully-wicked sequel to Disney’s Halloween classic, “Hocus Pocus.” Bette Midler (“The First Wives Club,” “Beaches”), Sarah Jessica Parker (“Sex and the City,” “Divorce”), and Kathy Najimy (“Sister Act,” “Younger”) star as Winifred, Sarah, and Mary, the beloved Sanderson sisters, who bewitched audiences in the 1993 film. Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”) also returns as Billy Butcherson. Joining them are Sam Richardson (“The Afterparty”), Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl”), Belissa Escobedo (“The Baker and the Beauty”), Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt”), Froy Gutierrez (“Teen Wolf”), with Tony Hale (“Veep”) and Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”).
“Hocus Pocus 2” is directed by Anne Fletcher (“Dumplin,’” “The Proposal”) from a screenplay by Jen D’Angelo (“Workaholics”) and a story by David Kirschner (“Hocus Pocus,” “Chucky”) & Blake Harris and Jen D’Angelo, produced by Lynn Harris (“King Richard,” “The Shallows”), with Ralph Winter (“Hocus Pocus,” “X-Men” franchise), David Kirschner and Adam Shankman (“Disenchanted,” “Hairspray”) serving as executive producers.
Each year on her birthday, high school student Becca ventures into Salem’s Forbidden Woods to set her intentions for the upcoming year. This year on her 16th birthday, Becca and her best friend Izzy light a special candle gifted to them by Gilbert, who runs the Olde Salem Magic Shoppe, the Black Flame candle, which resurrects the 17th-century Sanderson sisters from the dead, surprising Becca and Izzy, and sending them on a dangerous Halloween adventure.
Winifred, Sarah, and Mary were the most powerful coven of their time before they were executed for practicing witchcraft and vowed to take their revenge on the town of Salem. The last time someone lit the Black Flame Candle was 29 years ago, and the trio of witches are eager for vengeance, but also to restore their looks…because, as all witches know, stealing the souls of children is the quickest way to a more youthful appearance. Now it is up to Becca, Izzy, and their estranged friend, Cassie, to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from running amok and wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before dawn on All Hallows’ Eve.

@@entertainmentlife430 we need the history of mother witch and why she was by herself? She said she lost her coven, which means she either tried to do the power spell to get all the power and lost her own sisters/friends or because of what was going on at that time in Salem. Her coven suffered at the hands of the reverend/villagers. But, I’d like to think the 1st scenario is more accurate because when Winnie asked why she can’t used the power spell, she said BECAUSE I SAID SO.. doomed is the witch that uses the spell..also, book doesn’t like that spell. So it means she has lost a lot and book has seen such loss, that’s the reason it should not be used at all. Mother Witch learned her lesson, but also…maybe Mother Witch is EVIL and she turned her back to her coven for all the power. By her following the 3 new young witches…who knows if her intentions are good or bad.

Interestingly there's a Robot Chicken sketch that shows the Sandersons riding Roombas a la Mary in Hocus Pocus 2, with hilarious, albeit expected, results. Also, does anyone else think The Witch Mother used the Magica Maximae spell? It would explain her trepidation, not to mention Book's, and the fact that her coven is gone.

I'd have to watch it again, but I'm not sure Book cried happy to see Winnie and her sisters. More the damage they'd do.
If you notice, the character arcs were more developed, for the main characters. Even Winnie, though it happened quickly, and at the end. When she lost her sister's, she couldn't go on, no matter how much power she had. The same could be said of Book. At some point even pure evil gets tired of its shtick. Would rather be left to slumber after 300+ yrs

      @brucewayne2155 ปีที่แล้ว +9

No they're not. Bette Midler stated less than a month ago during an interview, that she was very pleased with the sequel to Hocus Pocus and, that she loved how they made it that Winnie realizes that her sisters are the most important thing to her, letting Winnie's soul finally rest with her sister after 300 plus years. She was asked about a third installment of Hocus Pocus, which she stated she would be interested in where they could go for a third movie, recommending it be a prequel using the three talented young actresses from the beginning of the second movie, and basing the entire movie on the young witches, stating that it's not best to allow Winnie and her three sisters to lay to rest forever. Then asked if she would be interested in making a 3rd movie she said no. She said at this point she's getting too old to do these types of movies, and that she genuinely loves how the creators let Winnie go at the end realizing what is truly important to her, which is family, and let her die with her sisters, in peace, to never be risen from the dead again. That the prequel idea is much more fitting and, would probably bring a bigger crowd than if they did yet another sequel of the Sanderson Sisters as adults being brought back to life for a third one. That she is officially hanging up her broom, and will no longer play the part of Winnie. (Which makes sense, because there's no need for a third one with the sisters as adults. It's been done twice now. Both times were very good, so just let the characters die with grace. Don't turn them into Michael Myers).
Then last week during an interview with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, they were both asked if they'd be interested in staring in a third Hocus Pocus if one was made. Both of them stated they had so much fun doing it the first time and the second time, but there will definitely not be a third time. They basically said the same thing as Bette, and, stated that the third one should be a prequel to the second one, using the same child actors that played the sisters and, follow them as teenagers growing into their powers and becoming part of Books life, etc. That they think that would make a very good story and and very good movie that both of them would love to watch, but would not be a part of as actresses.
It sounds as if the three would be more likely to help produce it and have a say in the making of it, but not at all interested in acting in it. And who can blame them? They did amazing jobs both times around, and they're not getting any younger. Plus, a prequel with the witches as teenagers, being exiled from their home, coming in contact with the elder witch, getting their full powers, getting book, becoming to live in the forbidden Forest, etc, would be a very interesting movie that I for one would love to see. (Plus, I hear tell that there is already a prequel script to the second movie being worked on, hoping to start production next spring in Rhode Island. I really hope they get a good crew of writers, write a good script, and make the third installment happen as a prequel to the second, with the same girls that played the younger version of the witches. I'd definitely watch it!).

I think this was made for nostalgia purposes, but also to introduce the "new" witches. Maybe future movies or maybe even an ongoing series?
I think a prequel would be fun. A deeper dive into the Sanderson sisters in the earlier years. Those girls who played them did great!
I also think a part 3 with the original cast would be good, but as someone else said-it would need to happen sooner rather than later, as age will start becoming more and more of a factor

    @SaGeForReal ปีที่แล้ว +49

Hmmm even though Bette said she would love to appear in Hocus Pocus 3, I think it totally defeats the purpose of the ending of Hocus Pocus 2.
From the beginning of this movie, the main point was the loyalty and love of the Sanderson sisters. The reason they ran into the forbidden forest was because the reverend and villagers was about to separate the sisters. Then they met the MOTHER WITCH, who gave them BOOK and guided them on their journey as witches. However, there is something different with MOTHER WITCH compared to the Sanderson sisters. Did you see the kind of color her magic was?? It was WHITE, while the Sanderson sisters had their own colors red, green, and purple/violet. We also see a different color for Becca which was BLUE. Maybe Becca is a descendant of MOTHER WITCH?? Even the way they play with their match swirling it in between their fingers is eerily the same.
But anyways, I think if we do get a Hocus Pocus 3, it will be surrounding the 3 new witches and MOTHER WITCH will most likely be involved since we see her flying after them. I mean Gilbert does has another Black flame candle and maybe there is a spirit or soul in Cobbwebb (Gilbert’s black cat). Remember Sarah saying she feels it is Zachary?? But they also did mention when they were young that they wanted to turn John (the guy Winnie was supposed to marry) into a cat. So it might be John??? I’m not sure, I mean the Sanderson Sisters have a long history in Salem and it could be anyone that they have cursed or fooled around with before getting defeated in 1993. It will be interesting to see what kind of storyline they will have with the 3 new witches and antagonists. I’m pretty sure we will see more of Gilbert and the Mayor..of course Mother Witch…but who else are they going to introduce??

Casting directors seem to have a gift for casting young versions of Bette Midler. In the beginning of Beaches they cast Mayim Balik as young CC Blume, Bette's character in that movie. Here the girl playing young Winefred was dead on even in the manerisms.

Yes! And not only that, but, Gilbert talks about how he was walking the streets and saw the Witches fly over head and followed them to the cemetery and saw their demise. That shouldn’t be because prior to the cemetery scene, Sarah sings her song and hypnotizes all the children of Salem to come to their cottage. Gilbert would have been hypnotized also, not walking the streets.

All of the eyes shown throughout the movie are also a reference to clairvoyance - hence why there are so many in the magic shop - because that's what eyes represent in the real world (the third eye, the all-seeing eye). They also represent omniscience and the gateway to the soul. I don't think all of the eyes in the movie are necessarily a nod to Book. It has its own eye so further reference to it isn't necessary.

    Okay people.
I think most people somehow think this movie was going to replicate the exact same feeling of this first film. OF COURSE if won’t. It was made in 1993 & now it is 2022. Just like films look & feel different in the 70’s, 80’s & early 2000’s etc.
Let’s be real now, we’ve seen some sequels/remakes that are just plain AWFUL & I went into this film not knowing what to expect, but honestly they did a bloody good job at this! & Introduced new characters, arcs, unanswered questions & revelations. I’m giving it 7/10
    Here is why:
    1. The opening segment with the Disney logo going into horror is something I’ve never seen before so bravo.
    2. The flashback to the Sisters childhood was executed very well, the 3 young actresses did a stellar job & how they got the book/who MOTHER was/ how Sarah came up with the song “Come little children”/ Winnie & Sarah & Winnie’s relationships with Billy were answered.
    3. Keeping to original score for scenes & dialogues kept it feeling nostalgic.
    4. The 3 new ‘Witches’ gave a modern day feel to the film & they performed well for me, that’s a lot of pressure to be in a franchise like this & I’m keen to see where their arc goes from here.
    5. And people saying jokes in the film were just repeats of the first, I digress. The Funniest parts of the film: Winnie slapping the hell out of Sarah, Mary thinking the face moisture mask was the face of a child, Sisters thinking there was small women trapped in the “Alexa” box, seeing themselves in the shop mirror, Winnie interacting with a Drag Queen version of herself on stage etc.
    6. The Reverend/Mayor portrayal was full of humour & wit & gave the witches a driving force for revenge.
    7. Gilbert was a nice touch & then him seeing the witches original death made complete sense as to why he turned the house into a shop (although it seemed the house was in a different location?)
    8. I will say the BF of the new trio girls was extremely dull. Was he meant to be a jock and a nerd at the same time? Weak character & his acting was cringe.
    9. I think Sarah Jessica Parker struggled a little with getting back into her role (maybe it was her dialogue) but as the film went on she got there.
    10. The sisters chemistry & mayhem was still intact, especially with the ending. Showing a soft side to Winnie & how much her sisters meant to her, very unexpected ending but emotional exit and performance from Bette here.
    11. Some jokes were a tiny bit forced I’ll admit that.
    12. Billy’s role was nice & his relationship with Gilbert (also a bit of shock he was English cockney?) suppose he didn’t speak much in the first film.
    13. The witches singing when they returned at first didn’t seem like a good idea but I like how the girls ran from them & Sarah gave an abrupt end to the song.
    14. ‘One way or another’ was a perfect song choice for them & bewitching the towns folk/all of them moving in sync looked great & felt nostalgic, very MJ thriller vibes.
    15. Sarah & Mary getting powers was a lovely surprise, although they could’ve made more of a deal out of it.
    16. Sarah standing up to Winnie was something new & funny how she immediately retracted.
    17. The fact that Kathy had to make a statement explaining why her mouth was crooked the other way is ridiculous. And in the film, Winnie slaps her mouth so makes it crooked the other way, so no need for the explanation.
    18. And the witches determination was different in the film, not only did they want children’s souls but Winnie wanted to use the forbidden ALL POWERFUL spell, so the stakes are raised here.
    19. The post credit scene was a perfect teaser & hopefully they’ll bring back the OG kids from the first film to Hocus Pocus 3.
    20. The use of Salt in the film really highlighted how something so simple can have such an impact on their powers.
    21. Because Bette, Sarah & Kathy are older now, it helped with the witch looking element (in a nice way).
    22. The CGI I’ll admit could’ve looked a little better when they were flying although the effects used when Winnie became all powerful & cast a spell on the whole of Salem looked very good.
    23. The costumes & wigs department did a Stellar job!
    24. Having the witches interact with modern day technology was fun (1993 wasn’t even that long ago & look at what has changed).
    25. The two guys watching Hocus Pocus on their TV screens as Winnie flew past was very meta, nice touch & opens up so many questions.
    26. I think people really just decided to hate this film before they even gave it a chance, watch it again.
    27. The movies are mega HD now so that’s why they don’t feel as nostalgic, I think if they used some of the old camera equipment & technology like they did back in the day it would help.
    28. Honestly the movies wasn’t perfect at all, but for a sequel to come out 29 years later, they did a decent job.
    29. And I’m sick of people saying it’s WOKE CASTING. In the original film there wasn’t a single bit of dialogue from someone of colour or someone Asian/Mexican/Indian so to have different cultures represented in this film IS modern day America (even though that was still the case in 1993). So please don’t confuse your wokeness accusations with your subtle racism/sexism

I thought the movie was fantastic and I am 35! They did the Sanderson sisters justice. I know for the third movie they will bring back the original characters and probably have a moment in the third movie where they combine their hands and share the magic to do a big shield and laser beam spirit bomb to destroy the original source of all magic in salem WHOEVER that is.

I think for Hocus Pocus 3, the villain is the mother witch, somehow, and the heroes are the new girls BUT, we have Max, Alisson and Dani for a comback. And when everything is going wrong, the bring the sandersons back at the last minute to ask for their help

The three protagonists were the weakest part of the movie. I hope in the 3rd movie that the 3 protagonists of the first movie come back because they were better developed and acted (plus had better fight scenes with the Sanderson sisters)

    *SPOILER ALERT*
Originally I hoped for a trilogy: to unify the casts of both movies and a redemption arc for the Sisters because that's the only way I see the story concluding since they can currently return from the dead endlessly.
The ending here, however, seemed to do that. For the first time Winnifred displayed the ability to care, and she sacrificed her life for love! In Disney films that is a powerful magic. I would hate to see that moment undone in a sequel just to make a sequel.

Am I the only thinking they are setting up a Hocus Pocus Disney+ series with this sequel as the essential pilot?? Cause... That Mother Witch bird flying after them at the end felt like an upcoming dialogue in like a first episode Hocus Pocus drama series to me...
