      Same omg same. This is why singing Spring Day at the graduation hit so hard. It was a tribute to those students that never got to graduate.

    I actually watched another documentary about SeWol. The more I learned about the tragedy the more I feel enraged by the government. What's really upsetting is that the government actually can still save some of the students if they granted access ror the underwater lift thing from one of korean expert who travelled all the way to Korea from the US, with his own equipment and ship! And the government denied his plead to save them, give him no access and told him to go home (to US). It's so heartbreaking to watch the expert pleads for the government in charge to let him pass and save the students, he believes that some students did still alive even when the ship has submerged.
    And he's right! In another investigation, one of the cabin actually has air locked (?) and the some of the students gets some time to text their family. They also get to change clothes but eventially dies due to hypothermia. I cried when I watch that, it's so infuriating with what they do to another human's life.

      I went through several tissues watching this, even if it isn’t my first time seeing it. Knowing that some people have such little regard for others is heartbreaking and I can’t imagine what the family and friends affected by this went through and still go through because of this. Really appreciate you 🍞 for taking the time to look into it

    I remember watching this and crying my eyes out and here I am, crying again. Everytime I go to korea and see memorials almost everywhre or yellow ribbons, my heart just hurt..
    Also yes, the ship had too much weight!!! the maximum weight regulation was not respected so when they tried to make a turn at a wayyy too fast speed, the ship started tilting..

    There was many reasons, not only one. It was old ship, selled by japanese ship company for scrap. But the korean company, who bued the ship put 2 more floors for more space. And the government signed the papers as good for shipping. And it was over stuffed with cargo. Basically it was nearly 20000 kilograms over the ship's original capacity. And in latter investigation was found documents, proving the president and some of her closest advisers took a bribery to close eyes for the ship and to stop the investigation. She also maked a black list of celebrities, painters, writers, athletes, who spoke about the ferry. Some of them losted government fundraisers just because they was openly criticized the handling.

    The ship sank because it was old and inspectors ignored the weight (MUCH too heavy to be seaworthy) bc they were paid to look the other way. Corruption at the highest level. Safety was ignored for profit.
    The other reason it was an enormous scandal was bc the first reports put out by the news lied and claimed everyone had been saved.

    • @emilyl1094
      @emilyl1094 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read an article that the ship was originally smaller capacity for transporting cargo only. Later it was illegally modified via corruption without proper approval to become a passenger ferry that carried vehicles and cargo too. On that fateful day, it was overloaded and unbalanced while making a sharp turn on the sea. Lives can be saved if the Ship Captain/Crews, Coast Guards and Government acted fast and responsibly. A heartbreaking tragedy in maritime history of today.

    That last quote from the deceased diver was absolutely haunting. I’ve never felt emotion come over me like that. Those children and people died terrified and confused. I can’t imagine how they felt when no one came to rescue them.

  • @kreyaSun
    @kreyaSun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I remember this accident. I was so devastated, angry and speechless. Many other countries like US and even Russia offered their help but they still declined choosing to let all those people die. Most of them were children for God's sake, and they did nothing. And the elders who were on board saved their own lives instead of helping children. I get it, it's a cultural thing when elders come first. But those kids haven't even graduated school, they've seen nothing in this life and they still had so much to do. I'd rather die myself then let down the people who are in need by my side.
    EDIT: I don't understand why, like WHY did they need an order from someone as high as the president of the country to handle such a thing. The ship is sinking, there are no people in the water. Just put fucking 2 and 2 together and do your fucking job for fuck's sake! It's just simple logic.

    • @sueyeonson1310

      Even lots korean people couldn't understand WHY it happened and WHY they told the people on(in) the ship stayed instead of escaping from. Thats why we had to fight against the president amd her people who were in charge in (the president at that moment and she was impeached (not only this reason but also others) However, This tragic incident has become a trigger....

    They did not want to travel to Jeju twice so they decided to load all the students in board instead of dividing them into two groups. The amount of weight along with other factors lead to the ferry sinking.

    🎗It took me three tries to finish watching this one. I got upset and tear up everytime... The captain ran away, the crew were confused, teachers were confused, yet students believed in them. The doors were shut and locked, told them to stay put... I still can’t imagine how much they were scared. I still can’t get over the fact this happened. Some assume that they were staged as a ‘sacrifice’ like it’s some kinda ritual. How can someone be calm about this? How can it be forgotten? It’s the most embarrassing and tragic history, but it needs to be recorded and told. Just few days ago , a law was passed to support the Civilian Divers who has worked to recover bodies for over 6 years instead of coast guards, who are incapable of deep diving. There are many divers who are injured and have traumas and are not compensated for their work. It’s really late and still not enough for their hard work, it still makes me upset and sad... So, Thank You. Thank you for identifying this anger and sadness of this tragedy.

    That question will forever be unanswered....I've watched so many documentaries about this tragedy and I get upset and so hard broken about it. there was even a doc on the surviving students, how they are coping without their friends and how or if they have moved on with their lives...so heart wrenching..thankful the citizens stood up and get rid of that awful woman who still claims she wasnt aware of the severity of the situation (impossible...u a government leader....the president doesnt know what is happening in your marine waters....). I pray for continued peace and comfort of the families who had no closure and hope they can live on in honour of their children lost but never forgotten....
    Now it was told that Spring Day was never made for Sewol tragedy...due to speculation of being blacklisted by he government but i am glad bighit and bts found their way with the subtle hints in the video and to this day Spring Day remains Queen for the longest hit song on the charts..

    I'm so with you! The Captain leaves and everyone is left to die, I Can't! A public service announcement should have been made that anyone who has a boat should have been told a ship is sinking and we need the extra help. I had known that Spring Day had referenced or was inspired by a tragedy that happened in South Korea but I had no idea of the horrific details. After watching this and reading more about it, I will never hear this song the same way again. I am a cryer and very empathetic. Words cannot express how I feel for the people affected by this totally preventable disaster. It’s so much sadder when you recall one of the students foreshadow, saying something like “is this going to be one of those times when they tell us to stay put while are saving themselves?” I’m paraphrasing of course. I’m horrified.

It made me remember a lot of other tragedys like Chernobyl, which at the end made the Soviet Union disolve, or even the petrol explosions that happend in my city (Guadalajara) in 1992. This is my 1st time seeing this documentary so thank u for bringing this to my attention even tho I had watched & read some on this event. When it got to the scene where the president was impeached & the parents were crying & u cheered for the charge, I couldn't hold back my tears 😭😭😭 they could have avoided the loss of soooooo many lives if the captain hold told everyone to evacuate when they were able to! Even if no rescue boats had arrived, I'm sure everyone would have been fine waiting in the water with life jackets on while the ones who didn't should have gotten in the life rafts!!! 😡😡😡 it was so upsetting that the one civilian diver was so traumatized that he chose to end his life 😭😭😭 I'm so mad at the officials & I feel so sad for the families.

The similarities in that situation where their government's total lack of comprehension with what is going on and the situation in the US right now is astonishing. All the clothes & suitcases you see in the BTS's MV & also the shoes Jimin picked up on the beach represent the dead students belongings that were seen in the sunken ferry. They were going on a trip to Juju Island. There's cell footage from the students & it's horrific. I respect BTS because most (not all) kpop artists do not speak out about social injustices like Sewol.

    This is so painful to watch. We had a similar ferry accident here (from Estonia to Sweden) , the ferry sank in the Baltic sea half way, and my town Turku (Finland) was the nearest town, so the rescue helicopters from here were the first to arrive. The ship carried over 1000 people, including the crew. Most of those who were rescued alive, were taken to the University hospital in my town. A friend of mine worked at one of the helicopters as a diver. A few of my friends were working at the hospital. I myself used to work there too, but not the time of the accident (1994), because I was staying home with my kids. 852 people died in that accident. The reason was different than Sewol, it was night time etc, a lot of ppl died on life boats or rafts, or were floating in the sea with life jackets (it was cold so they died because of hypotermia), but overall the accident is so similar and it brings too many painful memories.

    There were many rumors and rumors' rumors, I'm not sure which one is the final conclusion but there is one impressed me. They found the track that the ferry left after it lost power is around the island, following the topography underwater. And many clips of monitors showed before the ferry lost its power, some thing drag it from the ocean. So some ppl feel the direction of the force from the ocean seems like someone anchored and force the ship stop and turned around. And bc the anchor kept attaching the seabed caused the track go along the seabed around the island. Then they found the pic before and after ferry set sail. They found both anchors were new and clean before the ship was departure. But one of the anchor become serious rusty after the ship is salvaged while the other one is still in a much better shape.
    Bc of this, some ppl wonder if this disaster is in purpose, bc there are many cult in Korean and the president seems like has close relationship with one of the cult. And the other side defend it simply just the gov. has poor reaction to this event. And bc it is unbelievable poor reaction makes the gov. extremely shame so they create the cult rumor to cover their inability which I think is nothing better...
    And about the sink, bc the ship stopped and turned suddenly, there were many cars and cargo changing their position along with the force and the ship lost balance so kept sinking :(

    I could be remembering incorrectly, but I recall that the ship was not suitable to be a passenger ferry, due to corruption and illegal dealings it also was carrying well beyond its weight capacity and was already is severe disrepair.
    There's other documentaries out there that have cellphone video and messages from the students as the ship sank. It is truly heartbreaking.
    All that needless loss of life because of greed, cowardice and "wanting to put on a good face" to superiors/pr.
    The corruption surrounding the incident is still being uncovered to this day. I remember, maybe around a year or so ago a news article about how internal video footage from the ship that was recovered was either "lost" or tampered with. I don't think the whole truth of all the factors surrounding the Sewol will ever be completely revealed.

      I read that many civilian divers assigned on the body recovery suffered from PTSD and couldn't carry on with their lives normally. A few of them committed suicide so did the high school principal right after the tragedy and a few parents too. It was really heartbreaking and painful to read more about it.

    Most Koreans watched this tragedy in real time. I remember it's hit us on weekend morning, and we couldn't help to watch with nothing we can do for them. It became my trauma for a long time.
    I've never taken any cruise ever since it's happened.
    Koreans were really upset and asked why government did nothing. This tragedy made us to impeach our president. The president has prisoned so far in 2022.

    The South Korean culture is trained to be compliant to taking instructions from their "elders" and "superiors"... These were 16-18 year old kids who were told to stay put and someone would come for them. A government was toppled for this (along with other abuses) but problems of cultural conditioning still remain... just like here in the US. I try hard to keep my political views separate from my retreats into entertainment but this offering of art reminds me that everything in this life is connected. I guess that's what art is supposed to do. Elections matter wherever we live... people of conscience need to vote.

    For the longest time I thought it went quick I mean how else do you have so many die. As Americans we would never stay on whether we were told to or not. These children stayed on a slow sinking boat because the captain said so.

      In my understanding to korean kids really obey their adults a lot like school policies ect. I don't really sure about this sorry

      @kreiner1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vherz018 they do obey because not to would bring dishonor to your parents, there was a time in America when kids were more like that. When you here people talking about the good ol days when children knew how to behave this type of mentality (do as your told no matter what because we know more than you) is what they are talking about. I don't want to live like that I don't want my children to. I have thought my children to be respectful but I also thought them to question things. BTS has many times sang songs about the establishment and how its not always right and that sometimes you have to fight against it if you want to be free. How much sadder would the world be if RM and Suga did what their parents told them to do and gave up music for a office job.

    bts have to anonymously donate to the families and the sad part is, they had to do it anonymously because of the government. The government was blacklising people and celebrities who spoke up against the government and this tradgedy. BTS is like most people hated by the government because they speak their thoughts and bring awareness, waking people around them because of this many of BTS songs are blacklisted criticizing the government and society. Because of this, many of BTS songs and music videos have lots of hidden meanings. To lighten up the mood, fun fact: RM has an IQ of 148 and he scored in the top 1% of the nation in the university entrance examinations for language, math, foreign language and social studies. RM's parents were strongly opposed to his interest in a musical career due to his academic achievements, and initially RM decided to set music aside to focus on his studies. In order to convince his mother to allow him to be a rapper, he asked her if "she wanted to have a son who was a first-place rapper, or a 5,000th-place student. Suga and RM mainly write and produce all the of the songs with lots of hidden meanings that’s why many Korean professors and professionals in Korea like to analysis BTS songs. Some of the deeper BTS songs are “Baepsae” lyrics talking about inequality, “Spine Breaker” and more. You can watch “BTS Baepsae explained by a Korean” DKDKTV to know more of the meanings

    I also want to add that I am incredibly sad, because even though the President was removed and all that, it will not fix their mistakes, will not bring people back to life and will not heal the wound in their hearts. This is unacceptable behavior by the government.
