  • Many ARMY know the iconic opening to BTS's 2017 ballad "Spring Day": "Bogo sipda" - Korean for "I miss you." This tiny phrase manages to be both simple and moving, conveying a great deal more than its simplicity would have you think. More recently, it has also taken on new meaning for ARMY as BTS fulfills their mandatory military requirements. These days, I think "Spring Day" is even more poignant and deserves to be analyzed now more than ever before. In this video, I take a look at the question of why "Spring Day" has endured the test of time to become an iconic, timeless masterpiece.
    💜The ARMY Theorist Corner is a channel dedicated to analyzing, theorizing about, and celebrating the discography of BTS! I am a proud ARMY who wants to spread my love of BTS to more people and I hope that ARMYs - whether old or new - and maybe even some curious non-ARMYs will enjoy putting their thinking caps on with me as we dive deep into BTS's amazing songs and videos. Today, I'm analyzing "Spring Day" as a whole - from its lyrics to its music video and everything in between - and celebrating all the things that I think make it so very special.

    I agree with much of what you say: Spring Day is extremely important, and is fundamentally comforting in a masterfully direct way. That comfort depends entirely on its willingness to acknowledge and explore the pain of loss. The song itself talks about missing a friend, and love.
    I wish that we could all stop equating love with romantic love, because there are such fundamental differences between the two. Romantic love seems dependent on sex and sexuality - which does not in fact need love at all. Love can be pretty incidental since romantic love can be fundamentally selfish and obsessive.
    Love on the other hand ... is unselfish, and is not obsessive, but instead is willing to see the loved object leave and grow for themselves.
    The MV is very clearly about the Sewol disaster, but I was not aware that BTS have now acknowledged this. While the basic ideas of Han are present in the song, the MV very strongly incorporates the fact of all the societal issues which exploit the pain of the less powerful as presented in the Omelas story and Snowpiercer. People will differ widely on these ideas, but I increasingly see this acted out in societies across the world. This simply increases Spring Day's relevance and its embodiment of Han.
    And finally, in regard to Han itself, while it is articulated in a particular way in Korean culture, I believe that it is probably present in many cultures. Even in my own culture there is a strong feeling of loss, of missing home and being unable to return to a special place like no other. I spoke of this feeling with my brother, and he mentioned that this is a common experience for all Scottish Highlanders and that we all wish it were possible to return, and I felt seen and understood. Yet another reason why Spring Day resonates so deeply with so many nations.

      This is an amazing comment, thank you so much! I love hearing about other cultures and the similar concepts they have that resonate with Han - as you say, it makes the song even more relatable all over the world and I find that amazing. And I very much agree with you: "love" doesn't only have to mean "romance." Friendship, love of family, love of self, and so many other things are also love, and those messages are so deeply important. Somehow "Spring Day" manages to convey all these things, which is also amazing to me. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! 💜💜

    When the ferry tragedy happened, the entire world stopped, especially in South Korea. Then the facts began to come out. I was a licensed 3rd Engineer that used to work aboard ships. It was difficult to control my anger when I began to learn what led to the sinking, compounded by the criminal lack of response when lives still could be saved. While floating, nearby US Navy personnel were not allowed to assist. Even after it sunk, there were expert divers willing to rescue people from survivable air pockets; but again were not allowed. I've trained for emergencies on my own vessels, and how to respond to emergencies on nearby vessels. Years later, I still can't fathom the absolute incompetence during those days. ...and then I think of the parents.
    They sent their kids off on a fun high school trip that was a right of passage for teens in that region. The parents just had to worry about sunburns, upset stomachs, and maybe a little overspending at the tourist shops. They never expected that their children wouldn't come back alive. The parents were then so badly mistreated by the officials. Finally, it's those teens. They were just starting their lives. The stories began to come out from witnesses, phone calls, text messages, letters hidden in clothing, etc. They showed more maturity during that harrowing event than most adults are capable of presenting. It would be easy to see how the maknae line of BTS would immediately identify with that age group, as the three of them were still in high school when they started as trainees. The seven members found a way to help so many in their age groups, and with their fellow citizens, to process so much inflicted pain.
    As humans, we easily imagine, "it could have been me," when we hear of certain events. As a resident in the San Francisco Bay Area during the Loma Prieta Earthquake, I still vividly remember how all of us frantically made sure that all students on our college campus were still with us. All of us had been on the collapsed interstate and that broken bridge multiple times. We even had taken a van load of students on those routes to the airport earlier that day. That feeling of a near miss, of relief that the disaster missed you, and then the empathetic pain for those who didn't escape the disaster, then the survivor's guilt for feeling your own relief.
    How many kids received extra hugs from parents once the news about the ferry tragedy began spreading? I find myself unable to breathe whenever the pile of clothes appears on the screen when watching the Spring Day MV. When all of KPop couldn't find a way through the pain, BTS worked together to create a cathartic masterpiece that will likely last forever.

      Thank you for this incredible comment, adding even more context to the unbelievable tragedy of the Sewol. Especially since the 10th anniversary of this terrible event was just a few weeks ago, I've seen even more discussion about it recently, and everything that happened was absolutely unthinkable. As you say, I think BTS did such a beautiful job of conveying all the pain and hope for a better future, all in something as simple as "I miss you." Thank you again for your amazing insights!

    What a beautiful analysis and summary! I will definitely share your video with reactors and fellow ARMYs.
    Thank you for dedication and time you put in into making this video. I really appreciate your hard work!
    I learned about concept of han thanks to Spring Day, until then I never had a word to describe this complex feeling. Now I do and I'm very grateful for that. To me Spring Day hits quite similar to what Namjoon and Yoongi said they felt during writing process, I lost some friends along the way (lost contact, impossible to rekindle) and loss of people dear to me (grief after a death). This song brings me peace. Our queen 👑👸🏼

    I was watchng the Spring Day video a couple weeks ago and it hit me. The part where Jin stares into the washer and the depiction of being trapped behind the round window.... it immediately brought me to tears. Idk how many times I've seen this video and not drawn the parallels there. This round window is like looking out while being trapped on a ship underwater and maybe includes his apathetic expression at them being trapped. I just can't 😢
    Whew, that's so fckn rough. Idk if ill ever see it as anything else again. Even if I don't have it right the visual is so strong that it's almost traumatizing. Especially knowing the particulars of the The Sewal ferry tragedy.

      @TheARMYTheoristCorner  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh my goodness, I think you're right. There's a lot of window-related images in the video in general, and I can imagine a lot of them referring to that very concept. A very mournful look at such a terrible thing. Thank you for sharing that observation with me - I hadn't thought of that either!
