I agree… minimum 4 for phones imo. I got the XR and I can’t wait to get all the new features. 1-2 years is not going to be satisfying although it’s tempting at times because of Apple’s amazing marketing team. Like I upgraded my AW2 to AW7 last year and this year I’d love to get my hands on the Ultra but I’m going to wait at least another couple of years.

Excellent video and content, once again. It talks about i) key points that ii) no other one mentions, such as the impact of the peak brightness on battery life, and shows how battery tests can be misleading.
On the Dynamic Island, I'd agree, even stating that all these animations can quickly become annoying once the novelty effect has faded away. A negative is that there is no On/Off setting.
Also, even when not watching a video using the entire screen, the "island" can cut into it and cause annoying distraction if the aspect ratio is wide enough. This does not occur with the notch, as it sits higher up in the screen. Another negative.

  • @GBBangin

A big reason for your battery drain with the iPhone 14 Pro could be due to the 5G network in general and/or lack of 5G coverage by your carrier. This is also aside from the amount of phone usage, Always-On-Display, screen brightness, and iOS 16 issues.

Using my iPhone 14 pro max now, my thoughts are apple can significantly improve what the dynamic island can do. Also in always on display mode, a notification ring around the dynamic island would be much better than the screen lighting up still every time you get a notification. The good news is it’s still an iPhone and a reliable beast! Would like to see them add customizable features to always on display within this iteration of iOS. I think it’s the least they can do

I agree that Apple needs to make a high res JPEG version. It makes no sense that 99% of the customers will never see the huge improvement in the camera because they don’t shoot ProRAW. The mode should shoot in 48 MP, then downscale it to 24 MP and save a JPEG. There’s basically not more visible resolution than 24 MP, and it takes up just 8 - 18 Mb.

I think you know the answer to this question. There’s not much of an upgrade. Or difference. That’s why Tim apples daughter made fun of the 14. If you have a 13 or 12, then there’s no point. If you have a 13 pro max, than there’s no drastic difference there either. There’s been reports of the battery not being that good as the 13 pro max. So I think this is the reason these reviewers aren’t going too much into detail about the features and how they improve from the previous phones.

Still rocking my 13 pro. We usually upgrade every year, but there just wasn’t enough to entice me this year. I don’t care about always on display or the dynamic island, and the biggest reason I jumped to the 13 pro from the 12 pro was the 120 hz display. I’m still at 98% battery capacity with it and still love it. Maybe next year for the 15 where it’s rumored there are going to be actual upgrades worth the time.

I’ve started to test Halide for taking 48MPX photos when the lighting is good. It saves directly in HEIC HDR but file size is still big, up to 25MB sometimes, minimum is about 8MB. Photos are really good, crisp and detailed. I wonder why Apple didn’t put an auto 48MPX mode when lighting is good enough. The nice part is that you can put a shortcut to Halide directly on the Lock Screen with iOS 16. Sadly, you’ll have to subscribe to this app as the buying price is quite steep.

Those 80MB RAW files are crazy. That's the same size as the uncompressed 14-bit RAWs from the Sony A7R3 (42MP). Lossless compression RAW would make a lot of sense here. It would reduce the file size by about 50% and would be very easy for Apple to implement with all the processing power on an iPhone. Obviously Apple didn't implement that because now they can sell twice as much internal storage and twice as much iCloud storage.

Sometimes I really don’t know if apple is a professional phone company or a accessory company. Back in the day, they just “forgot” to add the copy paste method in messages (sms), while it was a need to have feature in the whole industry.
Now they just can’t find a way to downsize a RAW file. They still have a slow usb lightning port so you are very slow in transferring file. So you need actually upload everything to the cloud because thats the faster option and thats on a payed subscription based model for higher capabilities.
The wole industry has a decent telephoto lens and apple is sticking at 3x zoom
implementing a always on display thats to bright, and you can’t change the brightness…

Pretty scammy of Apple to promise significantly higher resolution on the camera but then suggesting only paying for more iCloud storage to deal with the huge file sizes.
