I got drunk in 2006 (I was 26), and I hooked up with this 40 year old woman. She played this song that night. We never worked out, but we kept in touch. I heard she passed away from a car accident. I had to see this video. Rip Victoria.

I come back to this song once a month or so. It's a pure masterpiece, but the most incredible part is Manu Katche's signature groove. As a drummer of over 45 years, I will put this up there with the best drums tracks of ALL time. It's THAT good!

    • @LazyIRanch
      @LazyIRanch ปีที่แล้ว

@@johndoyle2429 In the 80s, during my misspent youth, my brother had a band that played some real sleazy joints, the kind where every piece of furniture is broken and carved up.
One night an angry drunk stumbled out to his car and got a revolver, shot holes in the building from the parking lot, and left. I think the chick he was chatting up and buying drinks for had walked out the door with another guy that she liked better
We were in the back close to the band, didn't even hear gunshots. The bullets hit the bar area in the front and there was shattered glass everywhere but miraculously, no one was hit. The terrified bartender was unscathed, but probably in need of fresh underpants.
It was surreal! The band went on break right after it happened so we walked to the bar and saw all this chaos that we had been completely oblivious to because of the loud music.
We stayed up all night talking about it, then we all decided to go down to Pete's Cafe. It was built in the 1950s, had the googy signage and the little individual jukeboxes at every booth. Always seemed there was the same table full of very old men smoking cigarettes, swapping lies, and giving us the stink eye, those good for nothin' hippies.
This song reminds me of that time of my life!

n 1988 I had my first apartment. Above me lived a lesbian couple, across the hall was neighbor Dave who smoked pot all day long. We all became friends and hung out together. The lesbian couple split up and soon one of them had a new girlfriend Allie. I didn’t care for this new girlfriend at first, she seemed shy and awkward. Eventually we all hung out and Allie had a CD player with a ton of cd’s. I started rummaging through her music collection and found this Robbie Robertson cd. We both loved Somewhere Down the Crazy River.I stopped her in the hallway to talk about it and we both realized we had something in common. A love of music! Turned out we had the same sense of humor too. 32 years later Allie has been my best friend for all of these years. I’m thankful for this song that started a wonderful life long friendship.

I got my first apartment alone back in 1988 also. Heady days. Life back then was about chasing girls, playing football (the one with your feet) having a toke and a beer and listening to amazing music. Went fast didn't it? I have 4 kids in university and am 29 years married. It's a blur. My advice to young people: savour the moments, you'll be 57 before you know it. Great song and thanks for sharing your experience.

Loved this since it was released (all those years ago) and I'm at a time in life where certain people's deaths leave a big hole, you actually mourn for people you never met. Last year i felt Robbie's passing and other examples would be, George Michael (shocker for me too) and Tina Turner. Their songs weave them through your life and it's such a difficult thing to explain and describe, the loss feels real enough, and lasting!!! Many thanks to em all RIP 🎶🎵🎶

This is a perfect example of how a lyric can paint pictures, can make a listener see and feel exactly what the writer is seeing and feeling. No ambivalence, nothing subject to interpretation - the listener is drawn into the song because the writer lays an interesting storyboard out on the table. And in this case, the excellent production magnifies the power of the lyric to make the song nothing short of a work of art.
“Somewhere Down the Crazy River” is basically a couple of pages from the diary of a man living the levee life, maybe along the Mississippi River in the Deep South. The song would have been called a “recitation” back in the old country music days, as Robertson speaks the verses and sings the choruses. With great lines like...
'Yeah, I can see it now/The distant red neon shivered in the heat and Take a picture of this/The fields are empty, abandoned ’59 Chevy/Laying in the back seat listening to Little Willie John'
    - how can you not visualize these scenes? And if you don’t know who he is, how can you not want to Google “Little Willie John?”
Producer Daniel Lanois recalled the song’s origins saying that “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” was “a line that Robertson came up with when he was describing what it was like to hang out in Arkansas with Levon Helm in his old neighbourhood. He was telling me about the hot nights and fishing with dynamite … I was curious about his stories because I wanted them to be on that record … It’s kind of like a guy with a deep voice telling you about steaming nights in Arkansas.”
The final verse of the song is admittedly less clear-cut; it’s presumably about the experience of hanging with “Madame X,” and leaves some things to the imagination to be sure. But by that point the listener is so caught up in the vibe of the song that reaching one’s own conclusions becomes part of the fun.
The single was a relative success, charting in both the U.S. and the U.K. and helping bolster sales of the album in the still-catching-on CD format. It’s near the top of my list when it comes to great examples of cinematic lyricism; it’s like the movie so many songwriters strive to produce, true art that isn’t abstract or over the listener’s head. “Somewhere Down the Crazy River” is an excellent model of vivid lyrical imagery, something all writers should make sure their own lyrics contain before wondering why their songs don’t seem to communicate with the listener.

"... she says:" There's one thing you gotta learn is not to be affraid of it". I said: "No. I like it. I like it, it's good." She said: "You like it now, but you'll learn to love it later." I always thought that this verse was about experiencing heroin for the first time. The "you'll learn to love it later" line was almost the exact same thing I was told by the girl I used to hang out with. It is very open to interpretation, but to me, there's no doubt about it.

Hi All, I just came to Revisit this song and seen people had asked questions, to which I never got Notifications, apologies. Dublin in the 80’s, was Grim but just the best! Culturally changing for the better and not just for the sake of it and peeks into the outside world via Satellite Tv. Getting a pizza delivered over the phone was an event! The pirate station was Heartbeat FM, which we brought back 20 years later for a 1 month reunion. It was No1 at Night Time due to the fact it was Love Songs. It was professional equipment and format but small. A number of us did much Bigger things after, but Heartbeat was family and Genetic. About 3 years ago, a lady remembered me from my shows on Heartbeat in 1988 and that made my year! I tell this story occasionally, on the final few moments of our farewell broadcast December 30th 1988, as we played the final promo in the Cart Machine, the cart failed and the resulting final seconds of “The Final Countdown” promo slowed to a stop and we played the Final ID VO Heart Beat 95 FM to sung The Hearbeat of Dublin City. The slowing to a stop sounded crafted and listeners thought we had created it that way for that last moment, finally, re my earlier post about that Overhead Light Dimmed Low, it too died that night. When we came in the next day, staring at the wrongness of unmanned studio, that Overhead Light had for the first time in the studios History, stopped working, or had also died as Is better described. The last 45 minutes are on TH-cam, I won’t link it, it’s easily findable, because, being Radio, the picture in your mind will be far better than the reality. We do have an online Stream today, automated, no presenters, just some of the old tunes, like A Ghost, on TuneIn, good to visit, but like a like a stranger in a strange land.
