“Don’t Dream It’s Over” is a message of encouragement to someone who is struggling to hold onto hope. The singer in the song is talking to someone they’re deeply connected with, and he’s promising that their bond will survive any challenge. The lyrics describe hardships that can happen in life, but the song insists that we can defeat obstacles by depending on one another. I woke up this morning with this song in my head!! While the song has a blissful melancholy, it encourages us to stand by our dreams and to stand by each other. Too often, to this very day, we are divided by walls or the imaginary concerns of the world. Such a beautiful song...
This song always reminds me of a memory in high school. I was sitting in my car in the parking lot after school one day with my very best friend. She was really into heavy metal - a ROCKER CHICK. She quietly listened to this song as it played on the local radio station. She smiled and started singing along and said she liked it. My best friend passed away the summer after we graduated from high school; she was killed by a drunk driver. Anytime I listen to this, I remember that moment we shared on a sunny afternoon. I’m Argentinian and grew in the 80s, is amazing, literally amazing how creative all musicians were in that era. I’m a guitar player and thank God I lived in this gap to learn and feel that. So much to learn.
This played at my parents wedding in 2011. I've been looking for this song ever since, and today, November 17, 2024, I found it. I was 4 when they married.
Congratulations 🎉 I have a profound respect for the love that introduced me to this song many, many years ago. I am here 11-18-24 to share this as a song of hope and so much more...perseverance! Best wishes to you today and always!
Music is such a powerful force. I swear 80’s music takes me back to simpler times, no worries, carefree innocent times. I am instantly transported back to 1988 when I was 16. I miss that time in my life. Anyone else feel that way?
Me too!! It LITERALLY is the reason I stopped by this song! Such a masterpiece and underrated! Just heard the acoustic version and saw the words finally and I was in the comfort of the 80's again 😁🙏🏽💯
My friend sent this song to me a lot over the last few years. He took his own life two weeks ago.. he was struggling from PTSD since he went to Afghanistan. I miss him so much. It’s over, Drew.. the pain is all over
Condolences to you for the fact that your friend had faced such a struggle. May you find a way to remain close to him - he is waiting to see you when you arrive on The Other Side. Blessings to you on being a friend to someone with torments that would break most of us.
@Cristian Parrar...I'll pray for you...you need it......I just really wanted to offer condolences but got waylaid by that inane, idiotic comment made by Parrar( which is, of course, what he wants!) Regardless I'm sorry for ur loss😞
I'll post this for Drew. From Tool "10,000 Days" If he happened to be 27, this may mean a lot more. High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground. You were the light and the way they'll only read about. I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out. Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough; You're going home. You're the only one who can hold your head up high, Shake your fists at the gates saying: "I've come home now! Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time now! My time now! Give me my, give me my wings!"
Lyrics: "Don't Dream It's Over" - Crowded House. There is freedom within There is freedom without Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup There's a battle ahead Many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're traveling with me Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know that they won't win Now I'm towing my car There's a hole in the roof My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof In the paper today Tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the T.V. page Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win Now I'm walking again To the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead Barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and release Hey now, hey now Don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now When the world comes in They come, they come To build a wall between us We know they won't win... Dont let them win... END.
This song makes me so emotional... Don't let them win. Life is like riding a bicycle, to stay balanced you must keep moving. And hey now hey now, free the poor brothers!
The romanticism, longing and nostalgia for the decade of the 80's is indescribable, such a brilliant and glamorous time is unrepeatable, how those sublime times are missed!
I was born in 1968. The .70's were a Happier vibe. The 80's were Deep. Had a lot of depressing songs. And a lot of great tunes. Then 1st January 1990 came great music died. 90's drug computer music no bands like the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's. Forty years of great music. Then the boybands of the early 2000's, the tunes good but not as good as the other decade's. Now all I see on 80's music tunes videos are comments saying, I wish I grew up in the 80's as music this last 10 years is crap.
@@cornet959 it didn't happen overnight on the 1st of January 1990, there are plenty of great songs from early 90's where you still can feel that 80's vibe, the decline was happening gradually and by 93/94 that wonderful magic of 80's was gone
Yep, I'm 38 and a lifelong hip hop listener, yet this one I loved as a kid. Its quality how certain music can cause such a crossover in terms of its audience.
I know it's 2 different genres of music but this song and "Don't Deserve This Groove" by The System just jettisons me back to the 80s like no other. Don't Deserve This Groove reminds me of my heavy weed smoking days when I was strongly considering being a Forensic Psychologist. @@KingDomsKingdom85
I remember as a 16 year old - going to the record shop during my lunch break to purchase this track and another (Wonderful Life by Black). Now as a 52 year old I still remember that day, the weather, my walk to the shop and what I was wearing that day. It's amazing how songs brings such thoughts and memories - decades on.
I have one similar memory from 1995. I was a junior in H.S, listening to music, the sun shining on me on my front porch. I lived with my parents still. I said to myself, I will always remember this moment and day. Everything was perfect, the weather and life. I always to this day think about that exact time and miss it greatly.
i did not find this song out because of the menendez brothers but the show definitely reminded me that the song exists lol. 😭 i knew it already but i had forgot about it. it’s so good.
Absolute fucking same man. Although English id is my first language so i didn't have that problem but this song was on the radio everyday before I went to school as a kid. I was born in 1990 but this song was still constantly played at that time. It just stuck in my head. I love it
I was 17 when this song came out. First heard it on American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem. Called my local radio station to request the song so I could tape it on my cassette recorder. The DJ played it and thanked me for requesting it because it was one of the best songs she'd ever heard. Still holds up well today!
[Verse 1] There is freedom within, there is freedom without Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're traveling with me [Chorus] Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in They come, they come to build a wall between us We know they won't win [Verse 2] Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof In the paper today, tales of war and of waste But you turn right over to the TV page [Chorus] Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in They come, they come to build a wall between us We know they won't win [Instrumental Break] [Verse 3] Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Only shadows ahead, barely clearing the roof Get to know the feeling of liberation and release [Chorus] Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in They come, they come to build a wall between us You know they won't win [Outro] Don't let them win Hey now, hey now Hey now, hey now Hey now, hey now Don't let them win They come, they come Don't let them win Hey now, hey now (yeah) Hey now, hey now
This song means a lot to me, a friend who was my crush loved this song, and he always showed it to me and sang it. Now whenever I listen to this song, that melody at the beginning, It's like it taked me back to that specific day when he was singing "hey now, hey now." I had to confess my love to him.
I was 9 when this came out and every morning before school I would wait to see this come on MTV, and when it did me and my little sisters would sing it together. Brings back so many good memories. 💙

This song reminds me of a late warm summer afternoon in the mid 80's, sitting at our table building a model airplane. The windows were open, and it was just a good day. This song came on and I was just a happy teen without a care in the world. What a good memory.
I agree. I was a junior in highschool. Life was so much better then than now. When all our grandparents were alive and the world was vibrant. I've told my daughters to take in as much as they can now because it doesn't last long.

Can you explain to me why? All I know is they murdered their parents, and I keep seeing comments like yours and I don’t get it? What else happened? If you care / have time to explain
@@MichelleNorman-r1qit’s a long story but basically they were both abused by their parents in every way you can be abused, erik was being sexually abused by their dad from the age of 6 and at the age of 18 he told his brother about it, lyle confronted his dad and he basically to them said he had to kill them now, or at least that is how they interpreted it from their point of view (being severely isolated and not seeing any other way out) they bought guns, a few days later they believed it was time their parents were going to kill them so they got their guns and killed them because they truly believed their lives were at stake, now this is a very simple version but I hope u get the idea lol

Ya, and the croutons were much smaller. “What is the deal” with big croutons? Why did all the grocery stores change to big croutons? sounding like Jerry Seinfeld here.
The 80's were simpler times? The decade started with double digit inflation, Cocaine was everywhere and Miami was a drug war zone, the AIDS epidemic was killing artists of every kind, stock market meltdown in '87, and the constant concern that Russia might start a nuclear war.

I would like to add that I feel a real Todd Rundgren vibe in this song and I mean that as a total compliment. The melodic quality in this song is superb, and something I have always appreciated.
This song reminds me of a year ago when I almost lost my life, we didn’t know what was causing my terrible headaches until I got a CT scan at the hospital and it turned out I had a golf ball sized tumour. This song always calmed me down through the headaches, I love the line’s “There's a battle ahead Many battles are lost But you'll never see the end of the road While you're travelling with me”. I’m still travelling
It’s weird that people don’t see it as a family tragedy and have no pity for the mom and dad at all. They sons took their lives and the ability to get a fair trial.

Ever since I was a kid I've had a fascination with this song that turned into a deep love as I got older. The chorus has this echoing quality on top of the harmonizing that gives it a haunting sound which is simply mesmerizing to me. It somehow sounds both loud and subdued at the same time. This played at my parents wedding in 2011. I've been looking for this song ever since, and today, November 17, 2024, I found it. I was 4 when they married.
Now you're 17 then. lol
I was 9 when it was originally released, and remember hearing it one day as I was getting ready for school.... and now I feel old.
Congratulations 🎉 I have a profound respect for the love that introduced me to this song many, many years ago. I am here 11-18-24 to share this as a song of hope and so much more...perseverance!
Best wishes to you today and always!

Very sad to hear about your friend.

Music is such a powerful force. I swear 80’s music takes me back to simpler times, no worries, carefree innocent times. I am instantly transported back to 1988 when I was 16. I miss that time in my life. Anyone else feel that way?
Yes 🥺 if heaven exist, my only wish is to relive it one last time
Me too!! It LITERALLY is the reason I stopped by this song! Such a masterpiece and underrated! Just heard the acoustic version and saw the words finally and I was in the comfort of the 80's again 😁🙏🏽💯
I do
Reminds me of cal poly SLO. Anyone out there remember tortilla flats..
For the same reasons, I miss the seventies. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the 80s;
I get the chills listening to this song especially at the end of episode 6, the same title of this song.
Both actors did a wonderful job.
They were amazing!
No man ,the pain is not over, he killed himself so he is in hell
@@0722cristian Really? You sound like you are more likely going there with that sort of attitude!
@Cristian Parrar...I'll pray for you...you need it......I just really wanted to offer condolences but got waylaid by that inane, idiotic comment made by Parrar( which is, of course, what he wants!) Regardless I'm sorry for ur loss😞
I'll post this for Drew. From Tool "10,000 Days"
If he happened to be 27, this may mean a lot more.
High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.
You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"
Lyrics: "Don't Dream It's Over" - Crowded House.
There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know that they won't win
Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
but there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win...

You hit the nail on its head. 👍🙂

I agree, nothing makes me feel more calm than these 80s songs. It was a good time in my life.
I heard this song on my car’s radio this morning. I blasted it, had my sunroof open, and my front windows down. I love this song!
Yup: when a song brings THIS much joy, ya just wanna SHARE it with EVERYONE; I hear ya!
Fr tho, you just can’t listen to this song without making it feel like the 80s. Just that great of a song

@M The Hog Rider card is unlocked from the Spell Valley (Arena 5). He is a very fast building-targeting, melee troop with moderately high hitpoints and damage. He appears just like his Clash of Clans counterpart; a man with brown eyebrows, a beard, a mohawk, and a golden body piercing in his left ear who is riding a hog. A Hog Rider card costs 4 Elixir to deploy.
Was the trunk open?
There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know that they won't win
Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion
but there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win
Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win...
Dont let them win...
Many thanks for posting the lyrics
Thank you! Amazing lyrics and a beautiful song
It's "In the paper today" :)
gracias. thanks
I remember feeling like peace was finally here with society then "they" came in 2020 with the new normal
I have come to a conclusion I genuinely love this song
Ever since I was a kid I've had a fascination with this song that turned into a deep love as I got older. The chorus has this echoing quality on top of the harmonizing that gives it a haunting sound which is simply mesmerizing to me. It somehow sounds both loud and subdued at the same time. It feels like a was living in this time period despite being born in the very late 80's. I never get tired of this.
Nobody writes songs like this anymore. Music as basically died in the mid 90's and has just gotten comically horrible.

Joe Satriani is in those background vocals.
Oh, the 80s. So poor, couldn’t afford much. But the music had always soothed the soul.
Yes it certainly did soothe the soul I love it !
Verdade, sou desse época e trouxe uma lembrança boa,e acalmou!

The "poor" people in the 80s wouldn't even dream of being as poor as the actual poor people these days.
I love you @dhhbtd. So true
Not fair : (

One of the most beautiful songs ever
RIP to my mother who passed away Jan.5/2020. Songs like this from my childhood bring her back to mind when things were easier. I was lucky to have her as a teacher twice growing up💜 Those memories are always a gift to remember. We love you mom RIP
So sorry for your loss. I lost my mom also in Jan. 2020. I still haven't been able to accept she's gone. I miss her so much every single day! 😢💔
RIP to your Mother
@@lizettemendoza9242 my heart breaks for you and Justin, both😭
But you must remember, we all have to die...
... The nature of death is tied directly to the sanctity of life...
... We are precious because we are fleeting; running away from life, the moment we are born.
Yet, our Mothers' are immortal, as long as they can live through our memories, they will be ever lasting
The only objective sense for eternal life...
I think I'll call my Mom right now😊, and tell her how much I love her. For all I know, it may be the last time I get to tell her...
Justin, I am sorry about your mom. My husband lost his mother 5 years ago and I lost mine 27 years. You really don't get over that, but you will get better and never forget your mom she sounds like a very loving and wonderful person. Take care man Bye
I'm so sorry, Justin. :( Sending many hugs
I'm 19 years old, this song comes on at work almost everyday. It's one of my favorites, I've always loved older music as it really speaks volumes that today's could never even dream of. These songs remind me of someone being 17 in the 80s dealing with their everyday life just looking for a way to keep going. I wish we had good music like this in today's culture...
I'm 17 and I agree with you all the way. I listen to older music, orchestral music, and pretty much any music that has actual emotion in it and all my friends are always confused as to why while I'm just more confused as to why not.
@@DERIVATIVES-mh6ej wow both you guys are so unique wow
there's great new music as well, you just can't be bothered trying to find it
@@ayeyobossman6151 you'd be surprised how many gems of modern music I've dug up out of the depths of the internet. I mean, although the popular music of today is either rarely or never good there is still music being subtly produced that make this generation worth while.
I was 18yrs. old when this song came out......and yes the early 80's was a music lovers' dream!!!!! Sooo much great music coming out constantly!!!! The music biz killed it....as is demonstrated today in 2020. The biz only cares about formula's, marketing, copy-cat-ing ( don't know right way to spell it lol ), and nothing about the thousands of great musicians alive this minute!!!!!
@@DERIVATIVES-mh6ej agreed. My best friend and I listen to mainly older music. We just jam lol. I get into this because it makes me feel closer to my dad, he still jams out to these tracks of course. (Mostly Ozzy, Tom petty, queen, Zeppelin, etc)
