Installation of shotgun swivels and sling

  • Had enough of carrying around the Mossberg 500 in the field all day, so I wanted to add a swivel kit and sling.
    Selected the Uncle Mike's Super Swivel kit and Butler Creeks Easy Rider Sling. We go through the removal of the barrel bolt, (which is not as easy as Uncle Mike would have you believe), The addition of the new bolt with a swivel stud. Drilling the wood stock to add the swivel stud. The directions (I think) do not include the right size bits to use. Had to up size them considerably. Attached the Sling to the swivels and attached them to the shotgun.
    All in all when finished I was happy, but the giving the Uncle Mikes product a B- for the directions and the spanner wrench issues. The Butler Creek sling seems pretty good. Will be able to tell better after a few days in the field, and check its durability.

    since I bought my kit off of eBay, there were no instructions or anything that would have been helpful. this video is exactly what I was looking for, made the installation a piece of cake - thanks a lot!

      I am putting my swivel on the bottom of the pistol grip. Fuck what Uncle Mike says! One of my cop 1300s has the swivel there, so if it works on a Winchester pump, it will work on an Ithaca trench gun and an Ithaca cop riot gun. The 1300 feeds those mini shells better than the Mossberg.

    Over three years since you posted this video and it still holds up very well indeed. If I had my druthers I would attach a "no drill" sling to any shotgun I owned. Nothing wrong with the method you used as far as I'm concerned, I just don't care to drill holes in my stock(s) if I don't have to, and buying "extras" beyond the sling itself bothers me a wee bit. But that's just me. Currently, I am looking for a "no drill" sling for my 500 but I'm not going to turn my nose up at the system you used if I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

    Great video. I ran across this last week in preparation for installing a swivel kit on my Mossberg 500. I had put the Uncle Mike's swivel kit on my wishlist for Christmas and Santa came through for me. Finished the install this evening after watching your video several times. I found the same thing.....the 5/32nd drill hole was too small for the rear swivel stud and re-drilled with a 11/64th bit. Much better fit. However, I did not have as much trouble as you did getting the retaining ring off the barrel bolt which made me very happy. Thanks again and will definitely watch your other videos.

      +Alexsbuddy Glad it could help you out. If the teeth on the retaining ring wrench were about 1/8 longer it would have made it simple to remove. Thanks for watching!

    Was trying to help a hunting buddy install a sling the other day and neither of us could figure it out. Felt pretty stupid. Sufficed to say, the second half of your video is very helpful, especially because it's the exact same model of sling. Thank you for uploading! Take care.

    I can't understand what I'm looking at any better than I can understand the instructions that came with the Easy Rider sling.

    • @whiterook85
      @whiterook85  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +predcon1 sorry to hear that, thought it was pretty cut and dry.

    • @predcon1
      @predcon1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say that's an Easy Rider sling, but it has a separate piece of nylon for the butt swivel. The instructions inside _also_ talk about a separate piece of nylon for the butt swivel. But the one I bought doesn't have one, just a permanently attached loop, like you'd find on a sling for shotguns and rifles without any swivels. I think someone somewhere goofed before packaging it, and now I've got to return it.

      Don't worry about it, I've already taken it back. Guy at the shop said it was his mistake, he also thought it was a sling for a gun with swivels.

    Am an advanced amateur furniture maker, cabinet maker--with 15 yrs college level wood technology eduction as a hobbyist. Suggestions:
    First step after locating the dead center, is to use the proper sized "forestner bit" and not a taped drill bit to make the proper depth clearance hole for the sling screw. A tapered bit works as shown but not best means to control the size of the hole--go a bit deep with your angled bit and your finished look goes to hell with angled wood outside of the hardware screw diameter. Plus with a flat sided, and flat Bottom first hole, the screw itself has more wood to bite--not so with a tapered bit.
    Second issue. Use blue painters tape wrapped around the forester bit to use as your fixed guide for drill hole depth--no guessing and takes no time to improve your chances of a good job.
    Third issue. The forester bit not only gives you flat hole sides but flat bottom with a very shallow little dimple in the middle you will use a your locator guide for the tapered drill bit that is sized for the sling screw. The drill bit size should be the size of the screw shank--only the screw threads should have to displace the wood fibers--walnut is very hard and the wood fibers are not easily pushed out of the way if you drill the hole too small. You will get blow out or less likely crack the stock but you could.
    Lastly: Practice, and practice again, on some other piece of wood before you screw up that expensive highly figured walnut stock. Practicing on a piece of 2x4 is fine but better yet is something similar in wood density. If you screw up you have to drill a bigger hole and glue in a piece of contrasting wood dowel and start over.
    Or just pay the gun store to do and not take the risk!!!

    What do you do with all the excess strap on the back, I have sling on a .270 Ruger American with same sling and have about 18: of excess strap , looks stupid

    • @prestonfrady8977
      @prestonfrady8977 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Larry Nanoy you can cut the extra strap off or fold it up towards the strap itself and then use black rubber bands to hold it to the strap.. that's what I did and doesn't look bad..hope that helps.

    Thanks for the video. Did the Uncle Mike thing, great, no problems. But, my BC Comfort Stretch shot gun sling, item 80023 came with funky, folded over, sewn strap ends, (???). Unable to install like you did. Directions harder to understand than Chinese Algebra and not relevant to the product. Maybe it's a great sling, but no use and wasted money if you can't install. A 3' length of clothes line would have been better. Uncle Mike-Thumb's Up. BC-FAIL, go for something else.

    not gonna lie, that shotgun looks pretty ugly. you should have at least gotten a camo sling to match that really tacky wrap. looks way better w/o all that wrap.
