Me too, can't wait to see this come out and I'm putting it on my wishlist already to keep an eye on. Have to admit, I love dash's idea of a half draw for over powered bows, but I think it needs a flip side. Bows below a certain skill threshold get a faster straight draw animation, letting you fire faster and do trick shots. That would provide more of a spectrum, rather than dividing archery into "light bows" and "heavy bows" as most games would do. Getting the half draw would let players use bows slightly ahead of their current level rather than needing to update at every level, and the speed-draw would let those bows remain useful far longer. I'm also hoping to see great long broad-headed arrows for monster hunting, if there are big-ass monsters in game. I think it'd be fun to see an archer wielding a bow taller than he is, drawn to or slightly past the ear, and another six inches to a foot of arrow sticking out the front, only to see the whole thing buried to the fletchings in a troll.
We've also ben excited to finally go more and more public, as there is a game on steam to be tested by active community members and in the coming months, we will showcase more about the systems and in-game footage, I'm honoured you're enjoying these, all the best, Mike :)

One thing would be interesting, is some advice on bow storage, carry, and transportation. Stuff like, what's the best way to store a longbow vs a recurve? I have a new takedown recurve, and I don't have a great way of storing it tbh. Also what's a good way to carry a bow if the adventurer is on a journey, would he or she have a bow scabbard? What about on horseback, how would the archer carry it in a historical or fantasy setting?
Oh man, that’s a great point. We haven’t actually discussed the inventory management yet I’m not sure how they’re going to do it but that would be a great topic and also fun possible video idea.
haha, honestly linking his most recent gains to our system, adjusting hits in-game stats dynamically is such a fun, unique and crazy idea, that I've actually written it down xD Obviously its bloat in terms of development time for a small team like us but its in the back-log of our trello! :D If you want a bit more info, you can check out the pinned comment ^-^
You might like the archery in Kingdom Come Deliverance. There's no reticle, so you need to actually aim, by looking down the arrow. When you kill your first rabbit, you feel great!
It's not a video game, but since getting into slinging from watching your videos I made a fighter that will be specializing in using a sling in my ongoing D&D game I play with my best friend from middle school. So SlingerSam has inspired some gaming! XD
That's awesome and its mainly about that development time to make the models, animations and code for it but it's certainly not off the table to have slings, especially if we get a lot of people wanting them :D
@@mike_insomnia Well you can slap in one interested person with me then! I already went and wishlisted the game. I love more realistic combat based games and if you have Dash helping I know it's gonna be great.
they should definitely consider the armor that historical warbow archers wore! since the character will be leveling up their strength and endurance they should have enough equip weight to wear pretty decent armor. but archers need to see in front of them (i.e. open face helms), they need their arm and shoulder mobility (i.e. no pauldrons, mainly chainmail + gambersons), quiver placement (usually on the ground im front of them), stuff like that. bonus suggestions (for dexterity archers) is holding multiple arrows in one hand to shoot quickly! lots of historical examples to choose from, and it would make for a fun game mechanic. completely different playstyle to shooting heavy warbows
Yeah, I was talking to them a bit about brigandine and that would be a great potential set of armor. And I think it’ll be really cool on the decks build for sure to have them multiple arrows in one hand, when people do that right it looks so clean
Little Dash Redars shooting Their compound bows! I love it! You! Are truly blessed Brother! Can't wait for the next Vid'! Be safe on Your travels out there. End.

I think rambro needs to come to England, I'd love to even just watch you and gibbs go roving, never mind getting some good tests in, you'd absolutely nerd out on our castles and not to mention medieval buildings such as pubs still in use, the Royal armouries in Leeds would have you breathless
My personal favorite video game bow would have to be the bows in Monster Hunter. Edit: The bows in Farcry 6 have different tips like how you discussed, however its more of a upgrade, and less of being able to switch on the fly. I think farcry 5 had the ability to switch from regular to "armor piercing" on the fly
@@dashrendar5320 oh for sure, some people have hundreds of hours into the game. albeit most of that is spent grinding away to get rare items and such. but it's a highly enjoyable game, 10/10 would recommend.
Maybe there could be a mechanic for stringing or unstringing the bow. Maybe you can only hold full draw for a certain amount of time based on your stamina. Maybe if you shoot barehanded there could be some 'jerk' to the view as feedback to simulate the feeling of shooting barehanded, but if you work on a certain stat maybe that emulates callouses and then you can do it barehanded with no issue, etc. Maybe you drain more stamina (to simulate the pain of whacking yourself with the string) if you shoot without an armguard but if your technique gets high enough then you can shoot without an armguard without problem, etc
@@dashrendar5320 Yes my thoughts exactly :) And I guess some bows can be quicker to string/unstring, i.e you can't string longbows while on horseback but you can string some asiatic bows while on horseback.
So check out archery in a game called SCUM. They do the no reticule, partial draw with to heavy of a bow, impact full archery. My favorite weapon is the compound or 100lb recurve. Very cool survival game
I've played some SCUM myself and it's a fun game with many fantastic ideas and as Spriggan is more of a mix between building your castle and first person combat, we aim to develop a game in this new niece that everyone can enjoy!
KCD did another thing well with the different arrow types. They also had different heads. Wounding arrows were your barbed arrows, piercing were the bodkins, hunting were small broadheads, etc. Go play Kingdom Come Deliverance. The sequel is hitting February and will feature more archery, crossbows, and the blackpowder handegonne used in the Hussite Wars.
Trying to split pure power out from fine control and agility is just never going to be a great representation of the real world, but games have for years on the tabletop and videogame formats kept trying to do so. Which for me is where the problem with archers always falls, the only archer style that seems to be represented is the stealthy hunter archer, with the relatively low draw weight bow because 'oh archers are entirely dexterity dependent'. Which really isn't true, its a way to shoot a bow, certainly has some benefits if your going adventuring/hunting to be able to draw the bow far enough for it to be effective while crouched etc, but if you want to pack a real wallop you just need that heavy bow, with the heavy arrows that even the mighty Rambro* couldn't draw without standing. Also so far from accurate to the real world too as your Gymnast/Climber might look like a weedy little person compared to the Rugby player etc but they can't do what they do without some serious muscle power as well, and asking the giant muscle mountain to try and match those direction changes or climbing speed you'll see them struggle, but probably succeed to power through it (if they can even manage to have the grip strength to deal with their own weight so they can climb at all)... Really it is the insistence the dex and str type concepts should be entirely different - if you want to have two physical stats like that, which makes some sense I'd suggest giving the 3-1 ratio of return in the other - take 3 points of str get one in dex as well. *Rambro read no further: Everyone else replace Rambro with Joe Gibbs
Greetings sire! Did you see the latest Tod's Workshop video where Joe Gibbs shoots that extremely powerful compound bow? Reminded me about the video you did a few days ago...pretty nice... Anyway, I said it before and I say again... Really looking forward to the day where you make a video with Gibbs. I know it's a challenge, but would be great to see it happening.
Yes I 100% did see it haha. He actually sent me the link on Instagram right when it posted. It was amazing and I loved it. I am curious how they measure up with FPS so I wanna see what data Tod got and see thr difference when I track it
Hey Dash! That shot at 14:15 what distance are you shooting from? Also what’s your furthest shot you’ve made? I swapped to shooting longbow this year after buying it from my boss (I mentioned this story in an earlier video I don’t know if you remember.) But I’ve broken my traditional bow range record at a local archery shoot last weekend, hitting a 60 yard shot with my 45 lbs bow. I have heavier bows now but these archery shoots have you shooting a lot of targets back to back and I’d rather not strain myself with my 80lbs steppe recurve bow. Also do you have any archery shoots around your area? Here in Manitoba Canada we have 3D shoots where you go and shoot multiple animal targets either walking through a nature trail with branching trails leading to a target and different colour stakes for distancing, each colour signifying your archery class. And then there are indoor shoots where it’s all in a row with targets at different distances and angles with the colours on the posted numbers for each target. Very fun time!
Those shots that look like longer shots are about 60 yards that’s about as long as I can stretch it in the yard. I can do 75 but I’m right at the fence line. There are some archery competitions around here and stuff, but I honestly have always only done it on my own. I’m kind of awkward around people in reality so I tend to just do stuff myself
super impressive shots! And yeah I get that, I honestly prefer the outdoor shoots cause you just walk either alone or with friends through a nice nature trail.
Kingdom Come Deliverance has some very realistic bow gameplay. If you shoot someone in the face (and they dont have a full-face helmet), they die. Regardless of armor or how strong of an opponent they are. A lot of strength and agility are required to use the bow, especially the stronger better bows. They also show the windup process to draw a bow, and if you hold it at full draw, you're going to start shaking pretty quickly. That game has a lot of very realistic armor and combat mechanics. You should check it out. Spriggen sounds cool, I'm going to have to check it out.
Oh man I will need to see that gameplay! I did not know they had sling mods. Also yes haha it’s really not a parody…just a genuine conversion I feel like I have every time I play any Ubisoft or EA game
23:13 Oh no! There's string on the bow and only two boys left! RIP third son... He'll grow up big and strong like Conan the Barbarian working the shop. 🤪 I'm looking forward to the game. I hope it draws (heh) from Zelda's archery as that is a nice balanced style, but it's OK if it goes Diablo style, too. Personally, I really like Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma's archery, its first person shooting is really good and intense. It is also kinda batsh!t with all the agility Ryu brings to the table, so very much in the unrealistic category as you mention in the video. I don't know if you've played Ninja Gaiden Black/Sigma (it's on Xbox, and PC now), Dash, but it's really fun and was Demon's Souls before Demon's Souls. Spriggan doesn't look like it's doing that arcade flashy style but I hope they strike a balance between realism and fun. #HugsForSadbro
Yeah, indeed. I am really curious to see how it works out as well. It’s going to be much more grounded and much less arcade like but it’s still very early development process so there’s a lot to go and a lot to learn about but the guys are really passionate and I think we have a good strong base
Haha so as games are built there are “alpha” stages then “beta” stages and so on. Alpha is the earliest build of the game so it’s very much early rough draft.
@@dashrendar5320 I have my first bow coming for Christmas and I couldn't be more excited! 40lb longbow, I thought about getting a recurve to begin with but had a go with a few longbows and it was too much fun. Spent a couple of evenings playing with a 35lb and a 42lb.
@7:00 you have three noses, now we know. You've been hiding this secret for years but the 3D scan does not lie. I"m not judging though... I'd really love to see a game that has more depth to the archery classes, a strength build with knock-back or arrows with bleed-effects would be very sweet.
You need to play Kingdom Come Deliverance. They did a good job with the better bows requiring high strength and it was pretty realistic in in aiming and projectile speed with heavier bows like the Yew Hunting and Yew Longbow. DLC added a Sinew Bow.
Yes, I know I really do. I am thinking I might wait till the second one comes out in February and through like a Playthrough that would be really fun as I know they really took their time to get the details, right
That would be very cool to see in a game setting. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it done before. It’s always just a straight true jack but actually have the arrow curve would be really cool as it comes off the string
I hope they paid you for your time and expertise; as I am sure if they hired someone in the film industry with your knowledge and experience, it would not be cheap.
Wile I appreciate that my friend this channel is not about money at all It’s about sharing passion, so just the opportunity to help develop something unique and cool is more than enough for me
This is a very fair point and certainly not "industry-standard", however we finance ourselves by working side jobs, keeping us afloat to not rely on asking our community or traditional "investors" for money. The idea for Dash and us, is to work together, as geeks, nerds and gamers, to create a passion project and simply make a fun and unique game, that pushes the boundaries of a somewhat stale Triple AAA game dec scene. Soon we will start being more active on our socials and it is important to us, that we are not seen as a corporation but individual people who want to make their dream come true and therefore Dash is a friend, who helps us with this goal and getting him to be in the game, as a hero-character is the least we can do! I hope this helped you and feel free to read the pinned comment for more info ^-^
IMO the biggest issue for incorporating realistic archery in video comes down to the fact that realistically, you have to windup, aim and nock the arrow. You can't do this when enemies are up close to your face or rushing towards you. I think this is also why most games stick with the "speed shooting" style of archery, so that your main character can reliably use a bow in a single player setting while kiting the enemies. In other words, in order for a realistic, slower type of archery to work, you would need a team setting where enemies are not constantly on your ass, or in a stealth situation where you can have ample time and distance to pick off enemies before they arrive. I think this is also why the stealth archer archetype is so popular in many video games. Side note, I would strongly suggest you to try out Kingdom Come Deliverance if you want realistic archery gameplay. It is often described as a medieval simulator, the bow gameplay in that game is the best and most realistic I have played and it is not even close. Some key features being: - No crosshair - Strength is required to use heavy bow - Serious shaking and stamina drain when you hold the draw - The stability of your aim improves as you use bow more and your strength stat increase (it is really bad at first)
Yes, I really need to make the time. I have watched a lot of gameplay and seen a lot of people play it and it looks amazing but I just haven’t carved out hours in my day yet.
@@dashrendar5320 Would be great to see your thoughts on it once you have tried it out, keep the good content coming! Cheers! Note: Please read my edited comment!
Maybe you could make a bow yourself in game but it's not as good as store-bought or professional and even arrows. This could be used to take down weaker opponents, practice skills and gain experience, for hunting, or trading. You could also have special bows for mounted archery or archery where big bows may not work with drawbacks, like maybe price, not as durable, strength, etc. depending on the design. Maybe mounted archery is also separate skill at least partially or archery from certain locations.
Ooh, asking a legit heavy bow archer how to make archery good in a game? Can't wait to see *this* game drop. Honestly I'm hoping they have some big enemies that justify huge long arrows and these massive draw weights just for the chance to reach vital organs. I'd love to play a monster hunter who has reason to carry both a big, powerful war bow for hunting trolls and a smaller, lighter horse bow that has enough power to counter light armor but is still speedy enough to gatling gun a goblin horde. I've always wished games like Skyrim would have anywhere near the power of a true war bow and I've argued for years that archery should be strength based and does not require super-steels to make better bows. I've had this debate before both online and in person.
I don't think all AAA games fail miserably at fun archery. It's actually kind of upsetting to see you juxtapose that sentiment with footage of a title like Dragon's Dogma 2 which features some of the most enjoyable archery gameplay around.
@@dashrendar5320 Yeah I realize I shoulda waited a sec but I love to pop off in the comments too early because I'm a bad person. I did think it had some fun "heavy draw" type skills though. At least one of them was strongest if you just loose it as soon as it's ready.

Totally called rambro being shamblesbro after the vid dropped on Tod's 😂. The game looks interesting, will definitely follow its development!
Haha shook him to his core 😂😂 yeah I am super excited as well. We have a lot more scheduled conversations as they develop the game, but I think it’s gonna be really cool to see how it turns out.
Congrats for that. May it spread your fame and glory!
Fame and glory!! 💪🏹⚔️

Haha heck yes! That’s my page In a nutshell
Should convince them to build you an overlay tool for your live action game stats!
Do you know that’s great idea haha. I will ask them about that
haha, honestly linking his most recent gains to our system, adjusting hits in-game stats dynamically is such a fun, unique and crazy idea, that I've actually written it down xD Obviously its bloat in terms of development time for a small team like us but its in the back-log of our trello! :D

@@mike_insomnia If I was a better developer I'd offer to help. I can just barely manage react.js though!
You might like the archery in Kingdom Come Deliverance.
There's no reticle, so you need to actually aim, by looking down the arrow.
When you kill your first rabbit, you feel great!
Yeah I have played that a bit.
Super solid game. They did a good job on that one for sure
You absolutely nailed the current gaming industry 😂 Can’t wait to check out the game, super cool my dude 🎉
Haha thanks man, a pain felt by all nowadays! I am super excited to see how progresses as well. It’s a really fun adventure.
It's not a video game, but since getting into slinging from watching your videos I made a fighter that will be specializing in using a sling in my ongoing D&D game I play with my best friend from middle school. So SlingerSam has inspired some gaming! XD
Haha that’s Amazing! He will be thrilled or hear it 💪🪨
That's awesome and its mainly about that development time to make the models, animations and code for it but it's certainly not off the table to have slings, especially if we get a lot of people wanting them :D
@@mike_insomnia Well you can slap in one interested person with me then! I already went and wishlisted the game. I love more realistic combat based games and if you have Dash helping I know it's gonna be great.
the old man is OG,, he been testing catapults and all ,,, sorry RAMBRO hert his feelings jajajajajaj
Hahahaha oh for sure I love Tod and Joe is a legit legend. Would never compete with him in an archery competition
The good news, is that you're helping in Game Development.
The bad news, it's a text based adventure.
they should definitely consider the armor that historical warbow archers wore! since the character will be leveling up their strength and endurance they should have enough equip weight to wear pretty decent armor. but archers need to see in front of them (i.e. open face helms), they need their arm and shoulder mobility (i.e. no pauldrons, mainly chainmail + gambersons), quiver placement (usually on the ground im front of them), stuff like that.
bonus suggestions (for dexterity archers) is holding multiple arrows in one hand to shoot quickly! lots of historical examples to choose from, and it would make for a fun game mechanic. completely different playstyle to shooting heavy warbows
End.

Poor Rambro, he needs to find an 135lb compound bow to step over Mr. Gibbs lol
Hahaha man I don’t think RamBro could pull that 130
@@dashrendar5320you should come over and meet him and Tod that would be the coolest colab 🙂🍻
I think rambro needs to come to England, I'd love to even just watch you and gibbs go roving, never mind getting some good tests in, you'd absolutely nerd out on our castles and not to mention medieval buildings such as pubs still in use, the Royal armouries in Leeds would have you breathless
One day I will make the trip my friend, it would be an absolute dream come true, and if I could meet Joe Gibbs that would be the coolest thing ever
I would be absolutely honored to meet both of them one day
The old Pitfall game had Harry use a sling as his ranged weapon. That’s about all I can think of. It was a fun game on PS2
Yeah and a plagues tale 2 had one as the primary weapon (plus the total war games but I don’t know if that counts 😂)
@ we can make it count
That's awesome bro !! Gratz ;)
Thanks man! I am super pumped about it honesty. Such cool adventure
Man, I always wanted to get into that, but from what I understand it is quite the time commitment.
The stringing and unstringing the bow would be an amazingly cool mechanic. Help with lessening the bow degradation etc…very cool idea to incorporate
Wow I have never actually heard of that game! That’s sounds super cool. I will check it out
@dashrendar5320 the link below is to a TH-cam video explaining their archery system
Nice I will check that out
I've played some SCUM myself and it's a fun game with many fantastic ideas and as Spriggan is more of a mix between building your castle and first person combat, we aim to develop a game in this new niece that everyone can enjoy!
@@mike_insomnia I look forward to it
KCD did another thing well with the different arrow types.
The first thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail was “Sir Gains is gonna be PISSED.” I love him, he’s such a stupid elitist goober.
Hahahaha you were spot on
Love to see dash reaching New heights and getting more excuses to do these intros
Haha possibly my favorite part of the video
I love kingdom come deliverance where you need strengs to pull back the bow and agility to aim its verry good
I am honestly considering doing like a Playthrough when the second one comes out. That would be super fun.
I am curious how they measure up with FPS so I wanna see what data Tod got and see thr difference when I track it
I am not very sure how that frame counting fps measurement works as well...
Amazing video man
Thank you my friend! It’s such a cool experience I am just thrilled to be part of the adventure and represent the old school power in a video game 💪🏹
Another week made
Oh the references
Do you have a new bow. A 175 pounds bow?
No, I have actually had that for about six months but just been working on the strength to use it well
@dashrendar5320 😍
Yes that was one I was gonna touch on but the video was pretty long already 😂😂 I was pushing it. Anything over 20 min is asking a lot of people
Slingersam needs to play Mount & Blade ... but the slings are only in expansions and mods. The paywall skit was excellent, because it's soo true.
Oh man I will need to see that gameplay! I did not know they had sling mods. Also yes haha it’s really not a parody…just a genuine conversion I feel like I have every time I play any Ubisoft or EA game
I wish games used the mechanics of the Wii Sports archery mini game more.
23:13 Oh no! There's string on the bow and only two boys left! RIP third son... He'll grow up big and strong like Conan the Barbarian working the shop. 🤪
I'm looking forward to the game.
Love the intro as always, but I do have to ask, what is APLHA?😂
Haha so as games are built there are “alpha” stages then “beta” stages and so on. Alpha is the earliest build of the game so it’s very much early rough draft.
@dashrendar5320 I get it. I was kidding you about the misspelling 🤣
Oh hahah totally missed that my bad 😂😂 shoot
I just love that you are good natured about it. Love what you are doing with the channel. Cute boys too.
Excellent, I'm intensely bored by the skinny stealth archer thing. Combat archers rise up!
Fully agree!! The time of the combat archer is now! The beacons are lit
@@dashrendar5320 I have my first bow coming for Christmas and I couldn't be more excited!
40lb longbow, I thought about getting a recurve to begin with but had a go with a few longbows and it was too much fun. Spent a couple of evenings playing with a 35lb and a 42lb.
It's Sir Lancelot!!! Huzzzah!!!
@7:00 you have three noses, now we know. You've been hiding this secret for years but the 3D scan does not lie. I"m not judging though...
I'd really love to see a game that has more depth to the archery classes, a strength build with knock-back or arrows with bleed-effects would be very sweet.
Haha I have been found out! But yeah it’s totally true, switching arrow heads to specific enemies would be such a cool gaming addition to see
You need to play Kingdom Come Deliverance. They did a good job with the better bows requiring high strength and it was pretty realistic in in aiming and projectile speed with heavier bows like the Yew Hunting and Yew Longbow. DLC added a Sinew Bow.
Yes, I know I really do. I am thinking I might wait till the second one comes out in February and through like a Playthrough that would be really fun as I know they really took their time to get the details, right
Archers Paradox and parabolic arcing of the arrow in flight animations. But I'm not a video gamer. But may enjoy watching others play.
Some key features being:
- No crosshair
- Strength is required to use heavy bow
- Serious shaking and stamina drain when you hold the draw
- The stability of your aim improves as you use bow more and your strength stat increase (it is really bad at first)
Yes, I really need to make the time. I have watched a lot of gameplay and seen a lot of people play it and it looks amazing but I just haven’t carved out hours in my day yet.

I did indeed. I will be sure to let you know when I try it out. I think there is a second one coming out in February right?
@@dashrendar5320 Yep, have fun!
That would be really cool, it would be fun to be able to do like a makeshift emergency bow if your other one broke as a good survival trait
I just watch you because you are a NERD! Good video brother, enjoy the scans!

I don't think all AAA games fail miserably at fun archery. It's actually kind of upsetting to see you juxtapose that sentiment with footage of a title like Dragon's Dogma 2 which features some of the most enjoyable archery gameplay around.
In no way was I saying the archery was not enjoyable of fun, dragons dogma 2 did a good job. I was just saying it had the flashier and faster style
