    Hello everyone, I know this video has been out for years but this problem is caused by reduced engine power mode. The reason this mode is being activated, is because on ALL QR25DE engines (altima 2.5 and sentra 2.5) the crankshaft position sensor gets oil in it, causing momentary loss of signal to the ECM, such that the logic cannot diagnose the condition and the engine will stall intermittently in neutral. This also leads to low oil pressure, which may cause internal engine damage if the engine runs below proper idle for too long due to the fact the the oil pump is driven by engine rotation, and low engine speeds lead to low oil pressure. Another condition that can occur is if this is left to happen for too long, the timing chains may come under extreme stress and stretch (according to Nissan) I do not know how or why this is, but It did happen to me, and a new timing chain was required. If you experience the above problem with the crank sensor, do not wait to have it replaced as it leads to other engine problems.

    Thank you for this video. I have installed 4 times. First to check connector insertion; finally decided to connect before installing the sensor. Tried 2 sensors from parts store, but still had SES error on the 3rd start. Also had a long crank time.
    Purchased one from Nissan dealer and it worked perfectly.

    After installing the sensor erace the codes with a scan tool or disconnect battery for 10 minutes...and you good to go. Great video Jim.

    hi Jim .it was the crankshaft sensor... this is how it went down - I wedged the flashlight between the heater hoses aiming at mirror .One hand I used to hold mirror and other hand I was able to get socket w extension on bolt .then I used a magnetic nut driver to get screw out and back in .getting the old sensor off the connector was the most trouble I had you gotta really push the green tab down as much as possible .then just popped right off.On the whole, I had easier time than i originally thought but it was still tricky .I changed camshaft sensor as well ,( that was tons easier) took about 20-25 min thanks again for your response and your excellent video!

    Jim, thanks for the great video! I was able to change this myself in about an hour and it saved me a lot of money. The hardest part for me was getting the connector off the sensor to start with after that it just took a little patience and getting the sense of feeling around. Thanks again!

    Crank sensor failures are quite common on some Nissans. I have done several myself and they never seem to get easier. You must have more patients than I do.

    I noticed the sensor that you pulled out looked different then the one you pulled out. I recieved the same aluminum replacement looking sensor and the connector did not work or wouldn't connect due to the locking tab being located on the opposite side of connector. I was wondering how did you get it to connect because the sensor that you 1st removed looked different then what you installed.
    Tipi: if you have access to a lift, it is easier to do from the bottom and just remove to 10mm bolts that holds a heat shield in place for the exhaust.

    Jim just a suggestion. I take the top cover of the engine. Then u can lay your light on top of the intake and look down through the crack in the intake. I have found it helps a little and I put a mirror down under the sensor and it helps to see things better. enjoy your video's !!!

      Actually, it's always a good idea to take that cover off and flip it. It gives you a better place to lay tools.

    Great tutorial. It's key to get the engine cover off and a light down between the valve cover ... then you can peer straight down on the sensor and wiring harness.

    Thank you for the good advice i followed your directions exactly. when i plugged the sensor back in the green tab didn't pop out but it was plugged all the way in and it worked. is that a problem?

      Yes you do want the green tab to pop out because it will lock the connector in place .Try letting the motor run until it is very hot and then try to pop the connector on again.

    I can’t get my socket on the bolt of the sensor while the wiring harness is connected and I can’t get the wiring harness off. The green button pushes in about half way and doesn’t disconnect. Need advice.

    Thank you jimthecarguy for this video. I replaced my crankshaft positioning sensor today using your video as reference and tho it was quite a chore, it worked like a champ! The only thing I did different was take off the engine cover and with good light I could see it down through the hoses much better.

    So I have a question, sort of. My car was throwing the code when I bout it from someone else. The car has never quit once, Why would it throw a code if it's not stopping. Now it is missing and tries to stall when I'm stopped. I changed the plugs and getting ready to change the ignition coils and that sensor and then a new fuel pump because the fuel gage has never worked. I'm just curious about the code and it never stopped before.

    I accidentally stripped the threads (not the bolt) while trying to do this myself. How much would it cost to recoil the cylinder block? Or what are the options to fix that? I'm using krazy glue + JB weld for now but it's a temporary fix. Thanks

      I know that the plug was the most difficult part of the job just make sure that the little green tab is pushed all the was in toward the engine before you pull it out.Keep me posted.

      After the repair the light will turn off by itself after a few drive cycles.

    Glad I watched. Earlier took mine to napa scan said the same codes. Starts good now but still have a dip in idle after warming up (5-600 rpm ). Maybe the MAF ?

    i have a 2002 nissan altima and got this issue, but it was weird that the one we took off was different looking sensor from the one we got. the original was plastic and the new one is silver is that ok. crankshaft position sensor which one is the correct one plastic all black square or silver one and is circle.??

      Hey, this happened to me too. The old one is black plastic, the new, "redesigned" one is the silver cylinder shaped one. Looks alarmingly different but it is correct!

    how much pressure do i apply to the green pin to get it to snap down. i seem to be stuck there in that spot?

      +Tremaine Lawrence Yea sometime they can be really tight.You need to push the green connector in toward the engine until it locks in place (6:40 of the video).Keep me posted.

    Never test drive a car you replace a sensor in if it starts. That is unless you dont get out much.
    Dont forget to test drive the one that doesnt start when you replaced the wrong part. lol

    Hey Jim my car is not firing. could it be the fuel pump or s sensor. It was running just fine and now it will not turn over but will crank.

      Bro when you say it won't turn over, Then say but it cranks just fine do you know that is the same thing ! turning over and cranks over are the same.exact thing when a mechanic asks you if the engine cranks over that it mean's is the engine turning over when you turn the key to the start position ? Yes for it's turning over But NO it's not firing Or starting

    i have an issue with long cranks say about 4 or 5 seconds before it starts.
    has not stalked yet but always cranks a little too long. must tell you that its a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5 s. with a 2006 engine. please help me find out why it always takes too long to crank but rides very smooth with check eng. light on.??

    Hi Jim, The crankshaft sensor was changed by my local garage previously. I am getting the P0725 & P0335 codes so was going to try and replace myself.
    I got the sensor off cable still attached and cannot get the green tab to release ? any suggestions please.......try and release while still bolted in ?
    Any advice appreciated

    Great video Jim. My wife's 05 Altima wouldn't start getting the same code. I replaced the crankshaft sensor and now it starts but engine seems to misfire and sputter on the highway. Code still remains. I'm curious do you use genuine Nissan parts or after market. I went to autozone and got the Duralast aftermarket crankshaft sensor and I'm wondering if that might be my problem and I just need to suck it up and get one directly from the Nissan dealer.

      +brandon justus I don't use there products just because of the quality but there are many other parts that are just as good as the dealer.The parts I use at my shop are Standard and Napa.If you are having a problem after installing the Duralast parts I would recommend that you scan the car for codes first to see what you have.Keep me posted.Jim

      Still getting the PO335 and 725 error codes. Going to take it back off and double check its seated all the way in the connector and make sure there is no damage to the harness

      Fidel Salazar A fuse possibly. Most people pull fuses to check them but the best way to check them is to run a test light from the negative battery terminal and touch the little metal parts on the top of the fuses. if your test light doesn't come on than the fuse is bad or you got a bad wire somewhere.

    I have a 2003 Nissan Altima and the crankshaft position sensor connector burned out literally ,you and actually see where it burns the sensor, it obvious I can just change the sensor , but The problem I'm having is where I connect the sensor to the peace is burned out to the point where I can't connect it because where I insert the prongs that's in the sensor, is totally burnt away. WHAT DO I DO?

    Hey jim, I have a 2008 Altima coupe. Two months a go while I was driving I it felt like my drive belt was slipping. The car would not pick up speed for a sec and then it would feel it it grabbed again, jerk a little and then pick up speed. Well it happened again and I thought the wrong belt was puton. The engine light did come on with these codes. P0725, P0705 and P0826. The car never had any problems starting and still does not. I can't get it to repeat the issue. Thank you, sylwia

    Many thanks. Great video. I'm just wondering if access might be easier from below, of course with the car securely raised up to about head height or from a pit / trench. Your viewers might like to know that some new sensors are a little too long and get scratched by the crankshaft, so it's better to get a genuine Nissan-approved part No. 23731-6N21A. The camshaft sensor, up top with easy access, is identical. I don't know if the latter can also cause the symptoms mentioned, but best to get the new version in. Any recommendations for an engine scanner under say US$50, as I've bought 2 OBDIIs so far, but neither communicates with my 2007 X-Trail ECU ?

    Hey bud, I just did that job myself, and I cleared the computer of the code and the code came back up after the crankshaft sensor was replaced anything else I can be wrong

    The new crank sensor did not pop in like the camshaft sensor did. Like the oring is too small for the hole. I tightened it up. But still wonder why it was so loose

    Remove the engine cover, use light and face it down between the intake and the sensor location.you can see the entire sensor and have a visual to work with. No need to work blind.

    Hey Jim,I have replaced the cam and crank shaft sensors on my 2006 Nissan Altima two times since I purchased it in 2009. First time I removed the original plastic ones and replaced with the metal cased ones (not the generic ones either). I have maintained this vehicle to the factories standards; completing a tune up at 105k miles. I am at around 160k miles now, and I am getting the P0725 & P0335 codes coming up yet again, and now the vehicle just shuts off while driving. Do you have any ideas what could be the issue?

    hey jim i got a 3.5 altima p0300 ...coil packs seem to be ok not entirly sure but i tested them with a multimeter each readin about 1.5-1.6 ohms of resistance...seems like they have pretty good spark...again not sure wat the specs on the the coil packs...i cant really think of wat eles it could be thats cuasing a multiple misfire...my guess would be spark or fuel...see now on these 3.5 altimas there is no shrader valve to check for fuel pressure so how do i go about checking it if there is no shrader valve..a crank sensor wouldnt cause this code do u? whats ur personal opinion on this matter? cuz i dont want to just be throwing a bunch of parts at it if the ones on it are still good just to get the code off ..lmk T.I.A

    I placed a crankshaft position sensor on my 2003 nissan altima 2.5L. By the grace of God I found that you can see this sensor and the bolt by looking on top of the engine just right behind the spark plugs. You have to remove the cove.r Give this a try and you will see what I mean. Take care.

    Just so everyone knows.. when your Nissan pops these two codes at the Same time.. the crank sensor and speed sensor are on the same circuit. This means this side of the circuit is loosing its 5 volt reference. Nissan ECM’s create thier own ground. Don’t ignore one.. pay attention to both codes! The only fix is a new engine computer ECM

    I had the same problem with my 06 2.5 Altima. Replaced the sensor with one from AZ and now here I am 6 months later about to go out and do it tomorrow morning. You said you use NAPA parts? If this AZ one fails again I probably need to get it from NAPA huh? What's the failure rate on that part? Have you had any come back with the same issues?

      No problem with the parts I use .The Napa parts are very good also Standard Are very good also.

    if that tab on outside works with same harness there should be room for socket so you can clip on harness then install bolt...

    my car a 2005 altima did the same thing almost shutting off now it doesn't start at all just cranks any suggestions?

      Is there a code for the crank sensor ? If there is you most likely need a new sensor.

      Beautywithconfidence probably you have to replace the vehicule speed sensor in the transmission

    Hi Jim, I have a 2003 nissan altima that is pulling codes p0335, p0725, and p1564. I pulled and replaced the crankshaft position sensor but when I pulled the old one, one side of the flat part was exposed like there might have been a plastic cover that has come off. I checked the hole where the sensor goes and could not find anything. The same codes come up just with no suggested parts to replace. Have you ever heard of anything like this and if the problem is not the sensor do you have another suggestion.

    I’m a little confused, you got two (2) codes but you’re only addressing one (1) of them? Why not address the P0725? I’m not trying to be rude, but if I took my car to a mechanic and he only addressed one of the two issues, I would not be satisfied with his excuse for not addressing both. Both issues/codes should be addressed in case the second issue is contributing to the vehicles problem.

      The 2nd code is what is called a false code caused by the first failure. Thank you for watching and your input.

Having worked around aircrafts I was taught to troubleshoot every gripe until it’s worked out, so that’s where my thought process was coming from.     I replaced the crankshaft and camshaft sensor and I'm still getting the crankshaft sensor code alongside the engine speed input error code. I'm going to replace the crankshaft sensor with another and hopefully all it was is that I installed a dud. It was an aftermarket sensor with the cylindrical redesign. I'll try another one. Damn code is preventing me from getting an inspection sticker.

      You are better off getting oem nissan cam and crankshaft censor. The aftermarket doesn't work right. I have had the same issue.

    hi I got a 2006 nis altima 2.5 I'm getting po725 code and I'm getting intermittent stalling .would it be just the crankshaft sensor?
