Jesus, after decades, there is finally a decent way to stroke text in GIMP, the drop shadow method is what I always wanted. Guess I'll use GIMP forever now
You all prolly dont give a shit but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my account password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks for this tutorial. I'm changing from a very old version of PS that is no longer supported and due to a recent Win10 update, it no longer works. GIMP seems to have a lot of features, it's just hard to find them, so your tutorials are very helpful to me.
Thank You. I see the benefits of all 3 Strokes, depending on what I am making. I already use the 1st method as I use the gradient a lot. But I did not know about the other 2. I liked the bevel look of the 1st one and appreciated the tutorial on how to do it. I definitely will be using it more often.♥
Great tutorial! I haven't done this very much, but I do tend to use drop shadows the add emphasis to some text. I'll have to try the text to path technique. Thanks for posting!
been using the old school method, i clone the text layer first then grow the clone and draw over it with a hard pencil and move it under. i find increasing the XY ppi resolution from 72 to 300 when making a new project can help with the pixelation issue. it makes the project and file sizes larger though. wasnt aware of the shadow trick, must have a look at that sometime
That's my only pet peeve about GIMP. In my old, pirated Adobe PSP7 the ability to stroke was just there. You clicked on a button. In GIMP, stroking text involves a 20 step process including 'bringing a letter to witch that lives on a mountain but first you have to find a man's glasses so he can write the letter.'
First of all I want to thank you for this clear tutorial. I recently started to use a combination of the old school method and the second method. To avoid the uncrisp lines, I added the step of making a path to the old school method. So, after selecting the text, I grow it (like is shown in your video) and then I turn the selection into a path. I deselect my current selection and turn the path I’ve just created into my new selection. When I fill this with a colour I find the lines to be crisp. Before using this method I used the second method. But the results were that sometimes the stroke was drawn on the inside of the path and sometimes on the outside. Is this problem recognizable to you?
At 10:00 - you mention that we can make the stroke smaller than the original stroke. How can we make a stroke smaller? Is this analogous to the "shrink" command?
Is it possible to stroke text from an angle? ANother way to ask this question is can i create text from an angle? Kind of like the text gets larger or easily viewable from left to right?
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for all the information. However, I installed the latest version of GIMP but it didn't actually let me align the text. So I downloaded the older version again And it's not true it doesn't have the drop shadow function. It does, fortunately! So I'm sticking to the old version for now.
how do you do stroke from paint brush have pressure effect at the end , i created a path and select stroke to path and selected brush and pressure dynamics but it makes a solid one i want like lighting stroke end are getting narrower
i have an issue with the text tool. i have the text ready, i select all of it with the text tool, but when i select a font from the fonts panel, the text's font doesnt change. any idea how to work around this?
The sound design in the intro cinematic is really sharp/loud compared to the rest of the video. Thought I just should point that out. Otherwise a great tutorial!
Can u make a tutorial on how to create mascot logo using GIMP ??? maybe the tutorial should be useful for any animal or object ........ AND as ALWAYS very NOICE
control what? to select all your text? CTRL a .. ok so then later you use the N key to grab your root tool? my N key gives me PENCIL. what is the root tool? Under path, my gimp, .20 does not have any of the three path options you show yours has. Nice. lol.
@@DaviesMediaDesign 1:99 yep move tool, interesting today i can hear the word move instead of root. What about the gimp you are using? is it a test version then? I have .20,
I'm into photo editing and digital art but your tutorials are so basic that they don't show the assets most optimal complex use. Hopefully you can show us more uses for things that involve fantasy and fictional film editing. Some of your tutorials are useful but mostly too basic and I would need a master class on fantasy digital art and realistic film editing for movies or etc.
Oh my god I hate GIMP! I'm literally only using it because Adobe is evil! I bought what was then the newest version of Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects and Encore which the newest version 10 years ago was CS6 and now they took all my software away despite me buying it and now I am forced to use shotty apps like GIMP that make you take a whole boat load of additional steps to do something that is so damn simple on Photoshop. I hate this!
Yet another excellent tutorial. Multiple stroke is what I wanted without even realizing it until now, thorough explanation of the options. Thanks!
I came up with the third method by myself a while ago because I didn't have the proper knowledge. Now I feel enlightened.

thank you so much for this extensive study on creating strokes
Thanks helped me out a lot...old version was much different this cleared it up!
Great to see someone spending the time to thoroughly illustrate Gimp's capabilities. Great job with all your tutorials!
Thanks Geoff!
I have leaned much from your tutorials thanks very much
Thnk you so much for this tutorial, everybody only teach the last way I mean old school way and thats very sad, thanks for this new methods
Thank you for this, man! Easy, straightforward, and super helpful. I've been wanting to learn how to do this forever.
Wow I didn't know you could add gradients the stroke. Thank you for this tutorial man.
I’ve been doing this manually this whole time🤦🏾♂️
Thanks for the help man!
Many thanks, I was looking this for long time, really many, many thanks
Thanks for making this video! I've been trying to learn how to do this for weeks and it was your video that made it all make sense!
Just finished the GIMP course on Udemy. That's definitely a 5⭐ course. Next stop Darktable course.

Very helpful. Thanks for making this tutorial.
awesome, you had what i was lookin for! thank you!
So glad youre back !
I'm such a dumb! I never thought about using the drop shadow thing, and i was struggling with the "select and stroke path" method! Thank you :)
Loving your videos, thanks bro! Subscribed.
Thank you!
Your the best man always love your videos literally learn so much from you thanks again!🙏🏽
Omg thank you sso much!! This helped me tons

Excellent! A really useful tutorial for me. Thanks. 👍🌟
Great tutorial!
Thanks.
Best regards from The Netherlands,
Teresa
all methods are good.
following your tutorial step by step live.
Thank you so much.
Thank you 🤓
One thing to point out to SELECT the text you MUST click exactly on the TEXT icon and not just the text bar in the layer display.

Is there some legal reason this process is so hilariously convoluted?
Thank you!!!

Is it possible to stroke text from an angle? ANother way to ask this question is can i create text from an angle? Kind of like the text gets larger or easily viewable from left to right?
Using the first stroke method how do you remove the filter easily without having to go into edit text?

You should add feather to selection in 3rd method to improve edges.
Do you have a tutorial on "How to stroke text along a path", or after it's been put on a circle path?
Does GIMP have a feature (like PS) to add bevel, contour, emboss to type?
Does GIMP have a feature to ark or arch or wave text?
how do you do stroke from paint brush have pressure effect at the end , i created a path and select stroke to path and selected brush and pressure dynamics but it makes a solid one i want like lighting stroke end are getting narrower

Great!!!
You should do a live session to solve all the problems GIMP users face during editing.
welcome yet to another tutorial :D

I always use the 3rd with dpi higher than 100 and the sides never look jagged to me...
Another great tutorial, sadly I can't use 2.10.20 options as i'm stuck with 2.10.14 as they haven't updated the Mac version yet.
MAC version is now up to GIMP 2.10.22
The sound design in the intro cinematic is really sharp/loud compared to the rest of the video. Thought I just should point that out. Otherwise a great tutorial!
Thanks - I'm aware. Just changed my intro 2 videos ago. Took a bit too long to get that done, but it happened eventually lol.
@@DaviesMediaDesign Happy to hear! Keep up the good work :)
I can't update to Gimp 2.10.20 yet, because I'm using the Portable version, still 2.10.18.
Thumbs UP!

doesnt work either

I believe you are talking about the move tool, which is accessed using the "m" shortcut key.
