    Hi. Small sailing boats are not given any importance in Turkey. However, I love it very much. Your videos were very encouraging to me. I had no choice here until this year. Finally, this year, the small sailing dinghy NOKTA (it means point) started to be made in Turkey. I've been using Nokta for two months. I am trying to have pleasant moments like you. Stay with love.

    I don't need some monster sized yacht, taking all my time and money on maintenance, where I can't sail in less than 6 feet of water. These little sail boats are perfect, cheap to maintain and they get used a lot because it's so simple to rig and deal with. I'm from South Australia and these boats are perfect for our coast line and inland waterways. Sailing and camping is just perfect, great stuff mate

      Thank you!
      Here in the estuary it's so important that I can set sail in knee deep water if I have to, flat bottom skiffs are perfect for that.
      And ofc, with good wind they fly too! 😁

    Great videos, keep them coming,, FYI, camping on the beach in sand is like camping in snow. Dig a hole about 20 cm deep and bury the tent stake horizontally and back fill.. Your tarp will never come loose again in any amount of wind.

    Great video again! Since Forager has a flat bottom, why don't you design an in-board bed for camping out - like dinghy cruising folks do? It'd be great! Tarp over the boom and you're made!

    Really enjoyed your build series. Do have one suggestion on your rigging. I agree with David and recommend that you run your halyard on opposite side of mast from the yard in order to keep the yard closer to the mast especially when the yard is upwind of the mast. Some people will also do this with one wrap of the halyard around the yard below the mast. These methods are especially helpful when reefed while jibing to prevent the yard from hammering the mast and leaving dents when the boom and yard catch the wind and swing to the opposite side. 0:58 seconds in the video shows what's happening. Great videos and the production is very professional. Thanks.

      @TheBoatRambler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joel, thanks for your feedback.
      I really need to be more careful when I put that mast through the mast partner to make sure the halyard is going on the right side of the mast! 😅

    Has anyone used a Lateen rig on their GIS? Your sail control mods are very good ideas. Well done.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has crossed my mind but tbh I really like a loose foot sail with a boom, the traditional Lateen sail lacks de depth and draught position control... 😉

      @TheBoatRambler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have sailed a couple of lateen rigged boats, I like the sail in most conditions but when SHTF it's hard to gybe, and not easy to reef either. It can be depowered by allowing for sail top twist which wrecks pointing ability. But I'm not that experienced at all, this is just my noob opinion tho... 😉

      Regarding the vest, I used to wear one when sailing the Laser but the GIS is a bit more stable.
      Most waters where I sail are under 10ft deep, not much current, and the bank is not more than a few minutes swim away in most cases. still you are right, maybe I do need to start wearing one again... 😅

    Wonderful stuff; thank you for sharing your sailing. May I ask: do you know why the oysters are gone?

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks!
      The oysters were mostly farmed but with the booming industry in this area and the increasing pollution the water was no longer good enough for the oysters, same for dolphins and other species. It wasn't until maybe a couple of decades ago with all regulations and some of the industries banned/extinct that some species slowly returned to the river estuary.

    Yet another great video. Please pardon the approaching interrogation but I’m very interested and you clearly know what you’re talking about. 1) can you say a few words (or point to an online source) about those lateen-rigged traditional boats. I love that design. Were all of the boats that appeared in this video a single type? I’ve seen very similar boats in videos from other Mediterranean countries; is the Portuguese version distinct in any way?
    2) what would you think about a lateen rig on the goat island skiff?
    3) or fitting the GIS with a bowsprit and jib (lug sloop I believe)?
    No obligation to answer all or any. Unless you’re waiting for a bus, in a waiting room, wanting to kill time...😎

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!
      The boats you see in this area are "Canoas do Tejo" (7-10 meters) and Catraios (4-6 meters).
      These were mostly cargo boats or fishing boats, they were exclusively built out of pine which is the predominant wood type around.
      Canoas usually have either gaff or latin sail rigs while some Catraios have sprit rigs instead.
      I never considered a different sail on my GIS to be honest but others have tried gaff rigs, bow sprits and staysails.

    Great video. Comment on your halyard: @1:21 you tack the boat and the yard pulls away from the mast. Mik suggests rigging the halyard around the mast. It goes from the yard turning block around the mast to the tip of the yard. This keeps the yard against the mast and stabilizes the sail.

    • @TheBoatRambler
      @TheBoatRambler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi David!
      Yes you are correct about the halyard. Because I have the boat always rigged (with only the mast down) I sometimes forget to put the mast over the halyard, I need to pay more attention! Once I realize and since I'm already sailing I then just keep going as the trips are usually not too far...😅
