I just imagine the British feeling like they're entering a certain loss naval battle and the melancholy atmosphere as the ships approach when suddenly the entire American fleet turns and goes away and the British are just left confused as a single American ships stays back and wiggles back and forth in some strange attempt to battle.

They had every tactical advantage in naval warfare. To be defeated by a nation that had more land but fewer troops must have been embarrassing. One does not humiliate his majesty and expect the British to not be angry.
In all fairness though, since the Americans did have more land, they were able to build their navy much more quickly.

Oh man, the agony of watching that naval battle! First off, as you were noticing toward the end, don't just let your ships sail off to leeward (downwind) away from the enemy fleet. You had 7 ships against 2, but you let 6 of your ships just sail off to nowhere and effectively get stuck there, leaving your one remaining ship to take on both enemies. Take a page out of Nelson's book, and remember above all to *keep near the enemy.* When you're moving your fleet in, try to work your way to the upwind side of the enemy fleet (or half on each side), and then you can dictate the action by turning downwind toward them. Above all, if your ships start to drift downwind away from the enemy, *stop them* before they get out of range and bring them back into the fight.
Also, please remember that "weigh anchor" means to *raise* the anchor and begin moving, not to drop the anchor and stop. Oh, and if you really want to sound nautical, a ship's masts are called the foremast (front), mainmast (the tallest one in the middle), and mizzenmast (rear).

damm, thats the worst naval battle i have ever seen....
Alright some tips, the first one is obvious:
-use all your ships, don't just fire a volley and sail away. that is not what you do with infantry so why do it with ships.
-It is better to avoid fire, wait for a reload and reengage with the same side instead of trying to change side
-In a battle like this where you outnumber your enemy so much, just slow down, park your ships and let them shoot up your opponent, you don't have to keep moving at full speed all the time.
-boarding ships can be useful in certain situations
-you can manually fire even if all guns are not reloaded
-use the wind direction to you advantage, put the enemy with its nose in the wind and they will have a hard time turning. meanwhile keep your side in the wind and you are able to doge and weave because your turning speed is much higher.
keep up the content! it is awesome

U certainly turned a 7v2 in your favour into a 2v1 in the enemies favour. Not good. U never, ever, ever want to turn your ships stern to the enemy, and the bow only when you close on them.
Wind.....it doesn't matter particularly if you can turn and catch the wind, what matters is who is turning into the wind trying to force battle, because turning with the wind means you can do,it fast, turning into the wind means you do,it slow. You spent the entire battle at a wind disadvantage. All you had to do was pass the British ships at the start of the battle and the windgage was yours. You want the wind passing over your ships first. Doesn't matter what direction, doesn't matter what speed, if the wind hits your ships first, then turning downwind means engaging the enemy and doing your stuff fast.....having the wind pass over the enemy ships first means you are turning into the wind to engage, and you do all your stuff slow.

Instead of pounding the disabled ship from the bow, get behind and hit it from astern with a volley of round shot to create holes in the hull, then hit it with grapeshot to kill the crew though the destroyed hull. hitting the ship from behind works better because it takes more dammage, which also causes a greater morale penalty. Also, you should have drew the undamaged enemy ship away immediatly after destroying the first mast. The dismasted ship would not be able to keep up, even with just a single mast missing.

    • @durgan5668
      @durgan5668 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Exactly. That was painful to watch. That much advantage in gunmetal, should have been a turkey shoot. That being said, Lionheart, read some C.S Forester (Horatio Hornblower series) and you'll get a feel for this. Alexander Kent's (Richard Bolitho series) is also good. They explain the uses the different types of cannons are put to, and flesh out more than 'chain shot, sails' and the like. No one here gives a damn if you know port from starboard, but I think with a bit of a better feel for naval engagements, the game will be much more fun for you, as well, once it's mastered. Well, that is, unless the game decides to turn the Constitution into a sloop. But yes, try and capture them, you can always use more ships.

    The Masters of the Seas-pt.1:
Johnn Berwick came from a long line of sailors. His grandfather has commandeered his own warship in the Seven Years' War and his father before him was the renowned Jonas Berwick, who had sailed all the way to India and back in a matter of one year. Jonathan's father had been first mate in the famous second-rate ship Executor in the War for Independence. Jonathan had been sailing since he was 10 years old, when he had been a deckhand to his father's ship in his voyage to the Caribbean Islands. So when he heard George Cooper shouting in the town's square about the declaration of war, Jonathan immediately thought to join the crew of a ship.
His chance came when his older brother Thomas, an already successful sailor at 20 and 7 years of age, told him that he would be captaining a frigate of 24 guns called Dolphin.
"And I want you to be my first mate," Thomas said.
    "Me?" asked John, incredulous.
"You may be young, but you're my blood, and I know I can trust you. You can navigate almost as well as I can, and you're handy with that rifle of yours," explained Thomas. "So, are you up for it?"
    John nodded in enthusiasm.
"Good. We're sailing in a fortnight, so pack your things and say your farewells.Be sure to tell mother that you'll try and be safe, or she'll never start bothering you about it until you're gone," his brother added.
    "And what of father?"
"Father will understand. He'll have Peter at home to help him with his company. Berwick & Co. is going to need more employees since so many are going to war."
John nodded again, then headed home, leaving Thomas at the market.
    ---
Two weeks later, Dolphin set sail with the rest of the Republican fleet, commanded by Admiral John Barry. Spies had reported that a British fleet was staying at a port neat Cuba, and Washington had ordered the fleet down there to attack and capture the ships.
John leaned over the portside railing of the warship, waving goodbye to his mother, little brother, and father. Turning to his older brother, he grinned.
"Let's go teach those British a lesson."
    ---
    THWOOM
A column of water shot into the air as a cannon ball from Phoebe landed not fifty feet away from Dolphin. The salty water showered down on John's head. He clutched the hilt of the saber in on his right, pale with fear.
Over the roar of the cannons, he heard Thomas shout at the helmsman, "Steer to starboard!"
Then, turning to his younger brother, "Give 'em a broadside!"
John nodded, the. Roared out the command, "FIRE THE PORTSIDE CANNONS!"
In answer came a deafening sound as the cannons fired chain shot at the sails of Phoebe. They were rewarded with the sight of torn sails. The helmsman heaved the wheel to the right, and Dolphin responded with ease. The frigate was a thing of beauty, John thought to himself.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound a cracking wood. He turned to see the rear mast of Marlborough going down. The Valiant had landed another successful volley. A cheer ran through the crew and John smiled with relief. He saw Ceres, Congress, Bruizer, and the flagship, Actaeon following. This would be quite an easy battle.
    ---
Dolphin fired yet another round of grapeshot onto the deck of Marlborough, spraying small, spherical pieces of lead. He saw more men go down. Their screams could be heard from where the Dolphin lay anchor. Then again, John thought to himself, the screams of the four men of Dolphin's crew were a deal louder. They had gone down when a stray cannon ball had crashed into the Dolphin sending shrapnel of metal and wood across the deck. The four men that lay on the deck, dying, were the unfortunate receptors of the shrapnel.
Thomas nudged John and pointed at Valiant going in to board the British 5th rate.
"You want to help them out?"
John nodded, grabbed his rifle and loaded it. Taking aim at who he assumed was the captain, he fired. The man fell with a cry. Confusion and terror ran through the deck of Marlborough as the crew saw their captain go down. It was only a few minutes before the men of the Valiant were on board the ship and cutting through what remained of the crew.
As John saw man after man fall to bloody sabers and the bullets that rained down from muskets, he felt a feeling of revulsion course through him. It was the first time he'd seen a battle, or a man die in a fight. He'd seen and heard the men from Phoebe fall, then surrender to the American ships, and he knew the terrible fighting would be over soon.
Another man fell screaming from the deck of Marlborough, clutching his chest. John smiled grimly.
    An easy battle.

    @Trifler500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The primary tactic of this time period was called "Crossing the T". This means that the ideal situation is where all of your broadsides are facing either their lead ship's bow, or their rear ship's stern. From that position, all of your ships can fire, while at most, only one of theirs can fire at you. Of course, they're trying to do the same thing. So, it turns into a constant maneuvering match.
Here's what I tend to do with these battles:
    1) I have my group approach and angle off to the side, sort of like you did, but I do it sooner so they can maintain formation.
    2) I often give manual commands, but then I always put them back into formation afterwards.
    3) The wind is important, but you have to go around the enemy, so you'll always be against the wind at some points. Put more focus on positioning.
    4) If you have a situation like you did, where a bunch of ships are just sitting over on the side, then draw a box around them all and right click on an enemy so they at least do something. Then you can start refining your orders while they're under way.
    5) Letting the AI control those other ships also means you can focus on manually controlling one or two ships yourself and still have those other ships help out.
    6) Alternatively, you could have drawn a box around all those ships, put them into formation, and just given them a move order to sail against the wind past the rear enemy's stern. They move slowly against the wind, but they still move.
    5) If the enemy stops, and you have superiority, it's ok to just stop near them and blast away while stationary.
    6) Ships have the least armor in the rear.
    7) It's ok to slow down time to give orders and then return it to normal speed again.
    8) You kept trying to take down all of the masts, but once the white bar is depleted, the ship is already incapable of moving, so you aren't actually accomplishing anything by continuing to fire chain shot. The white bar represents their sails. That's when it's time to change targets or switch to grape shot to kill some crew before boarding.
    9) There's no reason not to put a group of ships into a formation and draw a line to get them to all face broadside, rather than turning each ship individually. That's like telling each infantry unit to change facing one at a time. :)
    10) You have to come up alongside to board. You can't do it from the bow or stern. When your ships are so packed together, they can't move into position. Be sure you click on the boarding button first and then right click on the enemy ship.
    11) You would have won boarding easily with your large ship far far earlier.
    12) If you aren't aware, captured British ships will retain their RoF bonus, and captured French ships will retain their higher accuracy bonus.
Overall, I would say the best way to get better would be to put your ships into groups of 3 ships each, and play as if it's impossible to take them out of formation. A formation of three ships is short, so they're easier to control. Learn to use them that way and you'll get at least somewhat better automatically. Get used to the ships maintaining more space between them, because that's what they're supposed to do.

Palmtree cause my state flag for south carolina has one on it and a little history during the revolution we built forts made from plamtrees as seaside forts cause when a cannonball would hit a palmtree instead of blowing splinters everywhere when hit they would actually sink into the wood or bounce off only slightly punching into the wood

Almost 26 minutes of naval battle against 2 ships? Here's some tips for testing Lionheart:
1- I use Sixth and Fifth rates to harass the enemy ships with chain shot and grape shot, respectively.
2- Try to go with two lines of ships: 1 with heavier ships (third, second and first rates) and one with lighter ships(sixth, fifth rates)
3-My Fourth rates always support both lines
3.1-Fourth rates that supports lighter ships, always go with normal shot
3.2-Fourth rates that supports heavier ships always go with chain shot

You'd be far more effective in that situation keeping your line formation together and getting to the side of the wind and sailing your whole line down his line. You out number and outgun him. Just pound the hell out of him. Make him come to you. If you had adjusted a little to the left you might have gotten far enough in front of him that you might have been able to cross the "T", and one you get past his line stear to his rear and hit him in the rear with your broadsides. In the end just put them in a line and sail them that way until you have broken up their line then use your faster boats to chase down the withdrawing boats.

The only naval suggestion I have is to diversify what ammo your ships use(when you outnumber the enemy and are trying to capture their ships) having 2 shooting cannonballs, 2 shooting chain, and 2 smaller ships using grapeshot will give you the best chance of capturing their ships. The solid balls destroy enemy cannons so they do less damage to your ships while you're boarding them.

Best naval tactic- take one ship, and run away. Run as far as you can, try not to get cornered at the edges of the map. Every few minutes quickly turn about and fire in a chain shot. Then turn back and run. Once all of their mats are broken, cautiously approach and shoot em up

Try to have a ship more than the enemy. Try to use two ships with the ball and chain shot (not sure if that’s a technical term) to try to disable the enemy vessels while a few other ships hit them with the little pellet things (also can’t remember the name) while this is all going on keep you most crewed ship at a dance distance but close enough to join in at short notice. Once all enemy vessels are disabled and their crews are depleted then you can bored a ship at a time with you primary vessel or even the ships that were involved in the fighting then try to take each ship. Hope this has Helped I love the content.

Line of fire, put them in a line and while the enemy is reloading you circle them in one line with a boat always firing.

so you dont start off with chain shot. much like grapeshot you change when closer. i found its better to position so your approach is guided by the wind. so you should have been further left. enabling you to speed towards the enemy "line" and "cross the 'T' " this will give you the length of the boat to slash sails with chain shot. with the wind at your back you can then maneuver better to perhaps get another decisive volley off to really cripple them. then you can circle them like sharks in the water. getting good grapeshot off to mow down the crew and board to capture.

lionheart that fisrt naval battle :D :D this is empire total war its not about not letting them shoot at you ships its about letting all your ships fire at enemy :D in those naval battles you dont need to use strategy that much its mostly about micromanegment of all your ships and getting as much cannon balls rolling as you can :D :D otherwise its great to have you play empire again :) ;)

You have too many units (ships) to micromanage. Put them in formation and move the formation. The only reason to break formation is to send ships to board or take possession of struck ships.

Now wanting to come across mean, but ... I really am bad at naval, hate it, damn weather gauge, slow ass movement, and when so many ships involved it ends up in a clusterfuck...but ...I think I have still a better grasp at this...all you need is to just block off the enemy two ships, await them with open gun ports, make sure the other ships eventually surround them, and give them hell from as many sides as possible...still, naval battles just suck ...

Just gotta ask I'm not a veteran total war player but you left 90% of your ships on the wrong side of the battle. If you have overwhelming numbers like that throw your ships in a line and volly fire. PS. Its a lot better to just wait for the reload then to lose the wind turning ur ships constantly.

...Terrible naval battle and tactics split their forces... loop around like you said... you had overwhelming odds in your favor and you let them go two vs two which is why you lost that ship. Then, you left all your other ships turning the wrong way into the wind... poor micromanagement. Normally I really like your battles...but this one...? Horatio Nelson was one of the top naval commanders around that time. Reading up on his strategies and tactics may be helpful.
